Sped Spud is the heartwarming tale of Ed Spud, a delightful youngster who eagerly anticipates finally being old enough to attend school. Unfortunately, Ed's experiences at school are far from perfect.

The story of Ed's relationship with school and how that relationship affects his view of himself is not only touching, but also thought-provoking. This book has something for everyone--teachers, students and parents! A must-have for families and classrooms!

Whimsical illustrations that are sure to appeal to children are colorful and touching. The author pulls no punches in her description of little Ed's problems as he is moved to a special education classroom, but with the help of a loving mother with a positive attitude and good and supportive teachers all ends well. Children will empathize with Ed and this story will help them understand that differences need be no cause for rejection.

The Best Anthology of Melville

I always liked Melville, but was never a big fan. But, thanks to John Bryant's wonderful job, this collection very much converted me to a hardcore fan. The paperback version is quite handsome as well.

A Superb Melville Anthology! Kudos!

I became a fan of Herman Melville while reading "Moby Dick" for the first time, back in college. Not only did Melville capture the lore and lure of the sea, and create some of literature's most memorable characters, he applied his craft, and love of language, like few other writers. I moved from the tale of the great white whale to "Bartleby The Scrivner," and "Billy Budd," with a growing appreciation for Melville's work.

Thanks to John Bryant, a Melville expert with a strong voice of his own, here at last is an anthology that contains some of Melville's most extraordinary writing. "Bartleby" is here, as well as "Billy Budd," along with many, lesser known short stories, some of them published in this collection for the first time. His moving Civil War poems, including, "Chattanooga," "Shiloh," "Sheridan at Cedar Creek," and "The Mound by the Lake," are included here, as are his letters, and sections from his epic "Clarel."

Kudos to John Bryant for putting together this wonderful Melville anthology. It should make a welcome addition to any good library.

Stevie's In Over Her Head!

When Stevie points out how "helpful" Veronica is and gets the job of showing around a visiting Italian horse team, (a job that Veronica wanted) she doesn't expect this kind of revenge coming her way. Turns out, "someone" volunteered Stevie to run the Children's Hospital Festival, the school's Spring Fair, and debate for class president all on the same day. What's worse, Kate and Christene plan on visiting that weekend as well. Just when it turns out that Stevie won't have time for anything anymore, Mrs. Reg prompts them to see the problem in a different way. With the help of Carole, Lisa, Phil, Kate, Christene, and all four of the Italian boys, Stevie's able to pull everything off AND get back at Veronica! This book was one of the most delightful of the whole series. There's fun and laughs to be had on this whacky saddle club adventure. How did Stevie do it? That's for me to know, and for you to find out.

The Test is a great novel, perhaps my favorite of Dorothy Bryant's, though it's hard to say because she has so many fine books. I only know that this book is so skillfully written that you believe every word. Superbly drawn characters. Nothing flashy or gratuitous. I would highly recommend it to anyone interested in the the difficulties of life and how we survive them.

I enjoyed the book-the unique subject matter--aging ,senile father--distraught,overburdened daughter and their communication and unique intent toward one another.
However, the author should have defined chapters. Every page
was a continuation of the other. I found it very annoying. Perhaps because it all took place in one day--, pauses and time to reflect through chapters would have made it easier to read(I dept loosing my place-paragraph after paragraph. It was tedious. All in all, the book was well written andthe
characters very real and well protrayed. Bravo

I really enjoyed this book as it was one of only a few I took with me when I went out of the country for ten months. When the fighting started in Israel, I read this poetry to get closer to my home. I loved it, and so did many of my friends. Since we are all in our twenties, and very few of us read much poetry, this was really a profound thing for us. Even though I know poetry doesn't SELL well, I hope people who look at your website try this one out as it was SO understandable, even I could feel it.

Loved the book have to agree about the background images though...

I'm not even done with this book yet; I am ingesting it slowly even as I sit in front of my edit station. Some of the questions that I have had for a long time were answered in the first chapter. It is definately not a how to book; it isn't a tutorial based or program specific book. Think of The Art and Science of Digital Compositing by Ron Brinkmann (which I also own btw). Imagine being able to pick the brains of some of the most successful editors of our time. That is what this book is like. Sitting at a coffe house or at the dinner table and just listening to what they all have to say about the craft. I would recommend this book to anyone involved in the creative process at any level: animators, producers, writers, etc. All can benefit from the information in this book. I'm sure I'll come back and write an full review when I'm actually done with the book. I'm surprised that there are so little reviews about it. I've been telling everyone I know to buy it. Especially since you can get it for such a low price. Anyway, I have to agree with "garyj_temple" on this one. The content is sure to be timeless. This stuff will be relevant for years to come. However, they shot themselves in the foot by putting the text over those images. I'm still giving it 5 *'s though; the good things definately out weigh the bad...

Loved It - Hated One Thing!

Loved the content. A great book. Not how to do it, but more of a look into the minds of some great editors.

One major flaw is a result of a great idea - gone wrong. Text is presented over image backgrounds. This makes for tired eyes at the end of a long read. In a few cases, there is black text on very dark background. You have to want to know what it says to put the effort into reading it. I'm sure there will be many negative comments on this aspect of the book.

However, I'm sticking with my 5 STARS. I believe the content was that good. There was only one chapter that I found ordinary. Great insights on almost every page.

A new classic in the field of UFO literature
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2002-03-30
A book with one of the longest titles around, "UFO Politics at the White House: Citizens Rally 'round Jimmy Carter's Promise" has joined the ranks of the classics of UFO literature. Its three parts show the reader that its populist author and former Pentagon employee, Larry W. Bryant, has both philosophic and humorous sides to his personality. His choice of letters sent to ex-President Jimmy Carter proves it. The President's unfulfilled campaign promise to disclose all government data concerning UFOs generated correspondence from a wide spectrum of the public. Even the unintentionally humorous letters, which sometimes lacked good grammar and style, show you just how the public felt about the importance of the topic. All the author had to do was mix in a dollop of the letter-writers' naivete to come up with a fascinating recipe which could fill more than a few cups and saucers (not the flying kind). This 316-page soft-cover book features letters from critics, fanatics, children--they're all there for you to read. Its cover shows a large manilla envelope on a blue background. A photo of the White House is centered on this, with an excellent drawing of a domed disc drawn in, as if it was hovering over the White House lawn. Bryant's witty, sardonic comments at the beginning of each chapter are just one of the highlights of this book. You should delve into the book. It's a great way to combine your interest in politics and UFOs. The connection is there for you to see.I highly recommend this book. As a long-time ufologist-researcher, experiencer, and former industrial and UFO magazine journalist, this review comes from someone who knows the field.

Long-Awaited Book by a Well-Known UFO Activist

Jimmy Carter was the only president to admit to seeing a UFO and the only one to make a campaign promise to release the government's UFO findings to the public. As expected, once Carter became president, he received a flood of mail from the public asking him to make good on that promise. Author and UFO activist Larry W. Bryant has obtained some of this Carter UFO mail, selected the best of them, and in presenting them in this book, makes some astute comments along the way. Many of the letters are cursory, saying essentially "what are you going to do about your promise?" Others are cranky, but some are genuinely probing or informative. While the letters to Carter on UFOs tend to be repetitive, the Air Force generated replies are even more so, but Bryant thankfully spares us that torture for the most part, only citing their replies when it strays from the routine. In the end, Bryant's book shows that when it comes to UFOs, the White House played--and continues to play--politics.

This book kept my kids -- 3 1/2 and 5 years old -- entertained for hours. This book includes all the numbers at the bottom of each page, so it is easy to use for kids still learning how to count. There are many dot-to-dot pictures on each page, so there are plenty of pictures to complete. I highly recommend it.

This book offers a range of skill levels that allowed my 5YO tobuild his confidence, while giving him challenges as he progressed. He loved the colorful pictures and was excited to discover the next puzzle. He likes to color with markers, and we found the paper used in the book doesn't "bleed" like many other books we've tried. I would highly recommend this book to any parent who is trying to teach their child numbers.

Great book that gives a clear, concise picture of the Marine Corps and its role in today's national defense. Especially liked the up-to-date information on Iraq and Afghanistan. Great photos!

My only complaint is that there was too much focus on Iraq, and wish there was more about the Marines in Afghanistan.

The recipes compiled, organized and presented in "Western National Parks' Lodges Cookbook" by food expert and travel writer Kathleen Bryant are drawn from the menus of fifteen Great Lodges located in ten national parks located throughout the American West. Superbly presented with full-color photography and historical notations about the lodges themselves, the recipes range from Pan-Seared Salmon Tostatas (El Tovar, Grand Canyon National Park); to Navajo Eggplant (Zion Park Lodge, Zion National Park); to Strawberry-Poppy Seed Shortcake with Grand Marnier Whipped Cream (The Ahwahnee Hotel, Yosemite National Park); to Watermelon, Tomato, and Feta Salad with White Balsamic Vinegar (Timberline Lodge, Mt. Hood National Forest). Each featured and gourmet quality recipe is methodically organized and thoroughly 'kitchen cook' friendly. A fascinating and informative read for anyone interested in America's national park system, "Western National Parks' Lodges Cookbook" is an elegant cookbook that will enhance any family or community library cookbook collection.

Two kinds of people will enjoy Western National Park Lodges Cookbook by noted Southwest author Kathleen Bryant: those who like food and those who don't. It serves up an exquisite reduction of the history of select lodges to perfectly complement the 10 national park entrées along with ravishing recipes and mouth-watering photographic accompaniments. More than a peek at elite chefs' favorite recipes (someone called it "food porn"!), it is a keepsake--a coffee table book that will bring back memories of each park you've visited as though the pictures were of your own choosing.

I stretched out on the sofa and began reading as soon as I got it. The lyrical yet spare style that packs each sentence with sensory images is familiar to more than a million readers worldwide who have "visited with" the author many times through her articles in "Arizona Highways." Bryant's book Sedona: Treasure of the Southwest is the best seller in the town it celebrates. The Four Corners: Timeless Lands of the Southwest follows closely behind and is a favorite of tourists to this part of the Southwest. I rushed to buy Kokopelli's Gift for my nephews to introduce them not only to the magic of the desert, but also to great writing.

Buy three copies of Western National Parks' Lodges Cookbook. One to browse through and collect with your vacation mementos, one to give to someone whose life you want to immediately enrich, and one for unexpected gift needs, like the open-house you're invited to next Sunday.
