The Best Anthology of MelvilleReview Date: 2003-07-04
A Superb Melville Anthology! Kudos!Review Date: 2003-08-02
Thanks to John Bryant, a Melville expert with a strong voice of his own, here at last is an anthology that contains some of Melville's most extraordinary writing. "Bartleby" is here, as well as "Billy Budd," along with many, lesser known short stories, some of them published in this collection for the first time. His moving Civil War poems, including, "Chattanooga," "Shiloh," "Sheridan at Cedar Creek," and "The Mound by the Lake," are included here, as are his letters, and sections from his epic "Clarel."
Kudos to John Bryant for putting together this wonderful Melville anthology. It should make a welcome addition to any good library.

However, the author should have defined chapters. Every page
was a continuation of the other. I found it very annoying. Perhaps because it all took place in one day--, pauses and time to reflect through chapters would have made it easier to read(I dept loosing my place-paragraph after paragraph. It was tedious. All in all, the book was well written andthe
characters very real and well protrayed. Bravo

Loved It - Hated One Thing!Review Date: 2002-11-30
One major flaw is a result of a great idea - gone wrong. Text is presented over image backgrounds. This makes for tired eyes at the end of a long read. In a few cases, there is black text on very dark background. You have to want to know what it says to put the effort into reading it. I'm sure there will be many negative comments on this aspect of the book.
However, I'm sticking with my 5 STARS. I believe the content was that good. There was only one chapter that I found ordinary. Great insights on almost every page.

My only complaint is that there was too much focus on Iraq, and wish there was more about the Marines in Afghanistan.

Love to Cook, Hate to Cook, You'll Love this Book!Review Date: 2007-05-13
I stretched out on the sofa and began reading as soon as I got it. The lyrical yet spare style that packs each sentence with sensory images is familiar to more than a million readers worldwide who have "visited with" the author many times through her articles in "Arizona Highways." Bryant's book Sedona: Treasure of the Southwest is the best seller in the town it celebrates. The Four Corners: Timeless Lands of the Southwest follows closely behind and is a favorite of tourists to this part of the Southwest. I rushed to buy Kokopelli's Gift for my nephews to introduce them not only to the magic of the desert, but also to great writing.
Buy three copies of Western National Parks' Lodges Cookbook. One to browse through and collect with your vacation mementos, one to give to someone whose life you want to immediately enrich, and one for unexpected gift needs, like the open-house you're invited to next Sunday.

The story of Ed's relationship with school and how that relationship affects his view of himself is not only touching, but also thought-provoking. This book has something for everyone--teachers, students and parents! A must-have for families and classrooms!
