This book is massive but dont let the size scare you. It contains nearly every plant that exists, by latin and common names, and gives detailed information concerning growth habit and growing needs. Even though it is winter, I have read this book to discover why I have had problems with some of my previous plant selections and I am developing a list of plants I want to purchase this spring. The book is divided into subgroups like perennials, shrubs, trees, annuals, etc, and is an easy guide for the novice or expert gardener. I recommend this book to everyone.

The Plant Finder is a great resource for finding plants for your garden. It lists plants by color which is a great way to make your garden colorful. Compact, yet very thorough in plant coverage.

I really like the design of this book. It has 992 pages and it feels heavy when you pick it up. On the other hand, the dimensions are small (6"x8"), about the size of a trade paperback, so you can easily hold it in one hand. I'm not sure if it would be practical to take along to a nursery but it would not be out of the question.

Content wise, the book features over 5,000 plant profiles and most of them are accompanied by excellent color photographs. Plants are arranged by type - Trees & Shrubs, Annuals & Perennials, Bulbs, Corms & Tubers, Grasses, Sedges & Bamboos, Fruit Trees, Nut Trees & Other Fruits, Vegetables & Herbs, Climbers & Creepers, Cacti & Succulents, Orchids, and Ferns, Palms & Cycads. Each section begins with a chart showing the botanical name, size and spread, plant type, climate, flowering season, etc. The chart is followed by encyclopedic entries which features a brief description and some of the most popular cultivars. A full index refers to both botanical and common plant names.

This is a book for identifying plants and there is little in the way of horticultural advice. Good for professionals and serious gardeners.

Never thought I would find a book for the special accomplishments our babies made. I hope ever preemie parent is given this book as soon as their baby is born. I was so excited when I got this book. It adds happiness to a very difficult time. I have it completely filled out for my baby. I can't wait to show them the heroics they survived. What a wonderful gift!!

Great Book. Records the milestones of the premature infant while in the hospital until six years of age. It is a keepsake album which contains precious memories for the parent of the newborn to record. Better than a regular baby book. Every preemie should have one!!

This book is very appropriate for premature babies.

I am the parent of a baby born at 25 weeks gestation. Most baby books aren't really appropriate for premature babies, but I found this book to be excellent. This book had places to put information about hospitalization that other baby books don't....If you are considering buying this book, I highly recommend it

It's difficult to easily categorize these dark works of fantasy: they are short stories written by such notables as Ray Bradbury, Michael Bishop, Nina Kiriki Hoffman and others, blending literature and art and all based on the strange kinetic sculpture Crowded After Hours by Lisa Snellings. Dark carnival stories probe the limits of humanity.

You really can't go wrong with SS! All the books and movies are wholesome and entertaining. I love reading them to my daughter and watching the movies with her. Actually, my son loves them too but would never admit it to his friends (he's 9). Good thing he has a little sister ;)

My daughter loves Strawberry Shortcake and this is a wonderful addition to her library. While the story's tend to be a little lenghy and are by no mean for beginner readers they do offer good morals and values. The pictures are great and my daughter likes to make up her own story to the pictures. I would recommend any Strawberry Shortcake book.

My daughters love Strawberry Shortcake, and I like the lessons that these books teach. I am so glad that they are introducing new characters who live in far off lands. This book talks about Strawberry's friends from other countries and their cultures. Strawberry visits her friends and learns about things they do in their homes, languages they speak and the clothes they wear. I think that my girls would benefit from having a penpal from another country just like Strawberry. My daughters also liked the recipes.

Any who want a streetwise guide to personal safety should look at Bill Bryant's guide, which shares wisdom gained from his personal experience. Bryant was trained from the age of 6 on how to fight using both Eastern and Western fighting styles: his synthesis of both provides a unique survey of techniques for close-quarter combat with and without weapons. A solid tutorial which offers step-by-step black and white photos to illustrate safety measures and protection methods.

This is a wonderful book from a number of perspectives. It now has a place of honor on my bookshelf sandwiched between Funakoshi's "The Master Text" and Fairbairn's "Get Tough". The author is a modern karate master, although he wouldn't have said that about himself. But what he's done is to take his life of experience in physical conflict, combine it with his exposure to judo and Shotokan and military self defense, and put together his own personal kata.

Remember, kata in Okinawa were considered complete fighting styles, according to Choki Motobu. And the reason that karate masters in Okinawa only taught one or two kata was pretty simple; a lot of info was encoded into a kata, and it took a long time to become practically effective in the multiple defenses represented in the kata (which was both an exercise for physical conditioning and a mnemonic device for remembering the body of technique and passing it along in a society without the internet).

Bill Bryant has synthesized the choices he made in defenses against commonly encountered habitual acts of violence and plugged them into a kata of his own device, not because he wanted to be a kata-creator-karate-master-with-a-tenth-dan-black-belt, but as a practical exercise to keep himself in practice.

If your nephew came to you and said that his trial for dwi was coming up in a month and he was afraid of fights in jail, this would be a good book for you to suggest to him. Along with a 30-day membership in a boxing club.

This really is a great book; all wheat, no chaff. It's not about the writer, his ego, his system, how tough he is, or why you should admire him and his system. It's an instructional text in an area that's an art, not a science, and it's delivered in a simple, straightforward manner.

Does it have weaknesses? Not many. If I'd written it, I would have added the use of the knife hand from karate and the chin jab from WWII combatives, but those are quibbles, and more important, they're choices. One of the best parts of this book is what's left out by the author's choice.

There aren't two hundred throws. There aren't high kicks. There aren't fifteen stances, and a hundred kata, and tips for meditating.

There's just how to do it, and how to get in shape to do it, and how to sharpen your ability to do it. And why it's such a great idea not to fight if you can avoid it.

This book is short, which is a virtue in a book about hand to hand. Read Fairbairn as well, and you'll see that guys who understand fighting understand that you don't need thirty-five different blocks because under the stress of real combat, you'll get confused and fail to block any of the shots coming your way.

So get it and read it. You'll be happy you did.

I first found Then and Now on a booklist for Sonlight's homeschool curriculum (for pre-K). It's a great help in teaching kids about the changes in society over the year. My 4yo son really enjoys looking at it and finding the differences between the pictures of "then" and "now."

How can you teach a preschooler about how society changes over time? It is a very difficult task, but one accomplished with this book. Filled with fabulous, detailed illustrations, this book compares the way things were done "then" (late 1800s/early 1900s)to how they are "now". I had fun discussions with my 4 year old daughter about how people used to cook,
shop, and farm, for example.

This is a book published from Great Britain, so there are a few little "Briti-cisms" (i.e. calling a sweater a "jumper"), but it is entirely appropriate for American audiences nonetheless.

Interesting and Educational

My son who is 7 loves this book. He loves to pour over this book and talk about the differences between different eras. This book is essentially a picture book with some writing. The pictures depict two scenes side by side from different times in history. For example, it might show the front of a general store with a dirt road, a stage coach, and wagon pulled by horses, women in long dresses etc. And on the other page it would show the front of a grocery store now with grocery carts, cars, etc.

The photographs are superb, and with each car givin its own subchapter, the book is a perfect book to grace anyone's coffeetable. Definitely not a book to live on a shelf.

I got this book as a gift for Christmas. I imediately looked at the beautiful photography for hours, but only recently got around to reading the text. What a great story! The author knows this subject inside and out, and worked with many of the famous designers who created these spectacular cars. The sidebars by Jay Leno were hilarious! I had never been a Leno fan until I read this book and realized he was as smart and knowledgeable as he is funny. I now watch him regularly.

In his own words Bryant describes his life on a wagon train going to California from the East Coast. If Bryant had a fault, it was that he too descriptive of the trail and events on the trail! If this wasn't enough, he was a doctor of the day, well, in his words, "Almost a Doctor." He was going to California to complete his studies. Like any good intern, he kept notes of who he treated on the trail and how he treated them. Also, being a bachelor, he was invited by the father of an eligible daughter to travel with them, "to let nature run it's course." This book should be a text book on the high school or the collegiate level.

Edwin Bryant's work is a classic not only of overland travel in 1846 but also of life in early California during the same time period.
The Kentucky newspaperman's writing style approaches poetic composition. He was a keen observer of every minute detail on the trail and when in California:
Geography; Indians; weather; describing the many people along the route; river fordings; acting the part of doctor to the many ailing emigrants; traveling with the Donner party; he and a handful of men separating from the main wagon train in Fort Laramie to go it alone; the perils, mishaps, hazards and beauty of the trail; meeting several celebrated individuals including Joseph Walker, Fremont, Sublette, Hastings, Hudspeth and Kearney to mention a few.
When in California, Bryant walked right into the United States' conquest of California from Mexico. He was a volunteer in Fremont's army to thwart insurgents. These and other timely events are well depicted. Bryant's description of what happened in the horrific Donner party expedition are piercing.
This is an exceptional book and highly recommended for enthusiasts of the early west.

This book is excellent. I could not wait to finish each chapter. I now realize what it really is like to have a war in your country. I am the same age as Kathe and I was constantly comparing my life during the war years with her life. This story is not about prison camps but about people who just happened to be living in a country that is at war. When the war was over for us in the USA it was not over for the people in Europe. They still lived with the horror and devestation. This book lets us in on the life that Kathe was forced to live and how it effected her personality. As a reader I was left with wondering "What IF"

"When the Lilacs Bloom Again, a true story of WWII European life is full of suspense, horror and romance; disease and threat of starvation were our constant companions for five long years. Despair and abuse of spirit were the legacy of the daily threats of bombings, rape and beatings. The title is a quote from my father's October 30, 1942 letter which ended: 'If God wills, we shall see each other soon. Perhaps when the lilacs bloom again.' Following deportation from Hungary, our quest for permanency and peace continued. The curtain of darkness gradually lifts as the challenges of my coming of age in a vastly different country begin." Kathe Bryant
"A courageous memoir and a bold testament to the resiliency of the human spirit, Kathe Bryant has put flesh on the tattered pages of history and has proven once again the inevitable triumph of love over hate." Phil Gulley, Quaker Pastor, author
"When the Lilacs Bloom Again is a true story so full of drama, danger and courage, it reads like fiction. Torture, rape and murder are part of her story as well as innocence, romance and faith. The story tells of spiritual tenacity and gritty determination which war itself could not defeat." Tom Mullen, Emeritus Professor: Earlham College and author
"Kathe Bryant's story chilled my bones by bringing war into a human perspective. Kathe calmly leads the reader through the horrifying course of events that ended with her family's emigration under Quaker sponsorship. Many of the facts are so gruesome, the sensitive reader really doesn't want to know...Kathe's book reminds us of the child behind the victim's face. Do not forget me..."
