Superbly written basic history of Ancient Greece

I read this book in college over thirty years ago as a textbook in my Greek History class. It is one of the best history books I have ever read. If you are wanting to explore the great classic primary writings on history such as Thucydides' history of the Peloponnesian War, or if you want to read the best philosophical works ever, such as Plato's dialogues, or if you want to read the great dramas by Aeschylus, Sophocles, or Euripides, or even if you want to read the compelling historical novels of Mary Renault, reading this remarkable survey of ancient Greek history and culture will give you exactly what you need to understand those works better.

A couple of years after my class in Greek history, I gave a copy of this book to my father, an avid reader. He loved the book and told me that it was the best general history he had ever read. I concur and I hope that colleges are still teaching Greek history with this book.

I've got a bookshelf of both new and old Greek history, historical novels, even historical fiction. Nothing even comes close to the information, originality of approach and pure delight in reading than this book. If all my school text books would have been this interesting, I'd be up to my umteenth degree by now and still going strong.

A History With A View

Hooper's book panoramas the history of Hellenic civilization from Mycenae to the Alexandrine Age. His grasp of art, archaeology, architecture, and complete command of his sources inform the magistrial prose that pours off of every page. That said, the size of the book is manageable. Hooper's view of history is similar to Thucydides: non-idealistic, and mistrustful of extreme forms of democracy. His views come as through strongly in interpeting the course of Greek history and civilization in this book as they did in his lectures when I was his student at Wayne State. This is most evident in his chapters on the three Athenian generations streching fron Marathon to defeat in the Peloponesian War. The feeling of inevitability, as the city-state moves from triumphant action to hurbis, exemplified by the debate over the expedition to Syracuse,to defeat at the hands of Sparta, reads like a Greek tragedy. So it was. -Lloyd A. Conway

Thank you for sharing your world, I learned so much. My son shares the same March 10th birthday as Patrick Henry. My son was also born with severe Bilateral Microphthalmia or small eyes, he is also blind. My son is now 19 months old and reading this book gave me some insights on what I might expect in the future. Reading about the struggles and hardships that Hughes family has tackled and overcome is inspiring. As a father of a boy with a similar condition - Patrick John Hughes insight as a father was enlightening. Anyone wishing to read a good book should sit down and read this story. I know my opinion is biased - but again it is only my opinion. It will be interesting to see what book gets written 20 years from now about the young adult life of Patrick Henry. I wish Patrick and his family the best. His optimism has helped my family and other families that I know that are dealing with blindness. Hopefully Patrick will continue to break down barriers and share his talents with all.

If you saw the Hughes family on the ABC TV show "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" this past February (2008) you may have wondered who they were and why they where chosen. The bigger story is however much deeper and more loving and certainly one that is most inspirational. The book " I Am Potential: Eight Lessons on Living, Loving, and Reaching Your Dreams" is a wonderful true life tale as told to Bryant Stamford by Patrick Henry Hughes and his father Patrick John Hughes. It goes well beyond just telling you who this family is and what makes Patrick Henry so special - it gives depth to the family experiences and gives the reader a look at something very special indeed.

This book is about how a young man, who has not only over come his disabilities, but inspired a community; and now, he inspires an entire nation with his positive zest for life. It also shows how his father coped and dealt with it and how the whole family made it work. This is one of those feel good stories that would make a great feature movie by Disney. The story is uplifting and not about what is wrong, or what someone cannot do. It is a positive message that makes the greater family of mankind feel better.

I enjoyed reading the book but I also found it impossible not to love this young man and to wish him all the best. He may be in a wheel chair and unable to see with his eyes - but he is moving others at light speed towards something much greater within their own selves. The book has a spiritual message without any lectures or ego driven, self-serving attitudes - it is honesty and pure love!

This book has gotten the highest book rating of FIVE STARS from "The American Authors Association" and is on my short list of recommended must read books! I give this my personal endorsement. This is a book that all family members can read.

I believe this is a well rounded book for all ages. It captures the life of teenagers dealing with unexpected suprises as well as how parents deal with the heartbreak of losing loved ones. This is definately a book where you can't lay the book down after reading chapter five, you must read six and seven...until before you know it the book is read. This book will keep you on your toes with twists but also keep you happy in the end. Great Book!

Jeoffry takes us on a wondrous journey through the secretive world of the forest. Readers and listeners will feel the quiet as they track each adventure -- riding, jumping, climbing, wandering and finally flying!

Through a symphony of words and illustrations, Bryant and Sayles take us to that lost land where snow and stars merge, and animals feast like kings.

Children and their parents will love the peaceful and drifty feeling that Jeoffry's Christmas provides, as rhythmic and dream-like images "dance in their heads." Striking a balance between man and nature, Jeoffry leaves us in perfect harmony.

Could be a new classic Christmas story!

It reminds me of my mommy, and I love my mommy. My mommy and me LOVE the pictures. They are smooth and you can feel some of the details. The story is good too. It shows you how things were different back when my mommy was a kid, but we still like the same things like skating, cooking, writing letters, and stuff like that. It is like a first reader book and anyone can read it. My mom and I read it all the time.

My 5 year old daugther just loves it! She loves the pictures, and the idea that she is "just like mommy". I love it because I can show her that we have lots in common. We read the book every night before she goes to bed. I even got a 2nd copy for my 2nd daugther's book collection (she'll be born in August).

I thought this book totally covered most of the escapedes been through by our favourite LA Laker guard, Kobe Bryant. It contain how he triumphed over peoples doubts of how he wouldn't make it and the inspiration it puts into young people to go out there and do the best they can is just overwhelming. I would recomend this book for people who have trouble believing in themselves because it is trully an eye opener.

I read the book a little while back, and I thought it was a great read on the most electrifying basketball player today. At that time, Kobe was going through a lot of growing pains, a lot of failures, crticisms, bad chemistry with teammates. And now, this season, I've seen Kobe's maturation and improvement in the league, playing more under control, playing in Phil Jackson's triangle offense, having better rapport with Shaq and his teammates. His incredible performance in Game 4 of the NBA Finals in overtime was unforgettable and it is only the beginning. Now he is finally an NBA champion with the Lakers, and hopefully, this will be the beginning of another great Laker dynasty, the first of the 21st century!

Moods In The Moment is an exceptional book in the fact that it can be labeled as spiritual and psychis. The reader can read one page, or a number of pages. I believe the message of the book is to learn and practice the idea of love. You can take a page of information, and create your own meditation from it. I like to randomly open the book and read that page. Learning to love, makes life a lot easier to experience.

People pick up this book, turn to a page, read it, and then tell me that it was the perfect message meant just for them. They say, "It was exactly what I needed at the time!" I have given copies to people who are having some difficulties in life, like: coping with cancer, stress on the job, fear, disappointment, low self esteem, and other emotional issues. The book seems to not only have good messages, but it appears that the angels use these entrancing words in a special way to let each individual know that they are not alone and have not been forgotten by the Creator of All That Is.

Since I was a child I often wondered how this world was created and, as I gazed at a night sky, I wondered who is up there on all those planets.

A friend who was fascinated with this book encouraged me to read it and I became so engrossed with the possibilities it explores I found it hard to put down. In all my life I've never been exposed to such a unique - and convincing - argument about the origin of my world! I have mentally shot holes in the widely accepted 4 other origins of life. I'm finding it extremely difficult to fault the author on his logic despite my skeptical nature.

The fact that the author Mr. Shiller is an engineer, gives his approach a logical train of thought and development that is very hard to refute.

Don't read this ground breaking book unless you enjoy fresh thinking and a challenge to conventional wisdom. I thoroughly enjoyed it!!!

The best answer yet on the origin of life.

It's absolutely brilliant. Someone out there must be wondering why it has taken us so long to figure it out.

Starting with the premise that anything can be figured out, then detailing proven, accepted scientific knowledge to date and ending with coherent, logical scientific and philosophical conclusions, the book gives a fresh outlook on the origin of life and the future of the planet.

The author's knowledge and research in the fields of engineering, biology, chemistry and physics are very impressive and give creditability to his process and conclusions.

This is a book for anyone who gives serious, rational thought to the origin and future of life on the planet.

This book is as close to a theory of everything I have ever read. For all its explanations of complex scientific issues, I found it a genuine pleasure to read. Shiller puts forth his scientifically testable Rational Design Hypothesis at a time when mainstream science relegates any design theory as unscientific. His reverse engineering analysis of biological life confirms convincingly the validation of classical Darwininan evolution(of species)while at the same time questioning the whole neo-Darwinian notion of chemical evolution upon which the chemical soup theory of life's origins hangs its collective hat. I found the reasoning both meticulous and convincing. I chose to skip some of the technical details obveously included for the benefit of professional biologists. A truly refreshing treatment of important issues.

Piana is a book that explores relationships through the many compelling stories within this story. The author takes you into a time and place that you know of only through the stories your grandparents have shared with you as a child. Through the truth of those stories you are able to better understand the issues of race today. Piana, takes place in the 1800's in Charleston on a plantation. The plantation owner's wife befriends Emmanuel, a little slave boy and teaches him to play the piano. The other slaves dub him Piana. This slave boy under the guidance of a white slave owner's wife is able to develop his gift to master the piano, during a time when such a talent, if made public, could only mean trouble for a slave. The book takes on many twists and turns to peek your interest all the way to the very unusual ending. This novel takes the reader back to relive a life and time that has molded many of our relationships, beliefs, and thinking of today.

I read this novel not knowing what to expect. What I found was a story about the South that I did not know. Mr. Mayhem has written a very historical novel that pleads to be made into a movie! I can't wait!

The second time a started reading it I couldn't put it down.

The book Piana, for me, was an excellent example of "Don't judge a book by it's cover." In all honesty, when I first attempted to read Piana, I had difficulty with the first few pages and therefore, I put it aside. However, I revisited several days later and when I started to grasp the significance of the first chapter, I WAS HOOKED! I could not put the book down because I began to feel somewhat of a kinship with Emmanuel and the relationship he had with his mother.

I am an avid reader, slow, but I believe that's why I enjoyed this book so much. As much as I like to read, when I get into a book, I really get into it. And that's exactly what happen when I made my second attempt to read Lemuel Mayhem's debut novel.

The conflict of forbidden love, the historical researched involved in the project, the Calhoun-Clay-Webster debates, as well as the racial scenarios from Emmanuel's relationship with Mrs. Katherine to her husband William Littlejohn and the new slave girl on the plantation, "Winnie," this saga is saturated with scenarios to keep the reader pondering the outcome throughout the book.

Lemuel Mayhem does not, and will not dissappoint with Piana. Hopefully, most people will be convinced of this fact the first time they pick up the book.
