A man its hard not to like

My father , of blessed memory had a great affection for Will Rogers. He always used to quote the famous ," I never met a man
I didn't like". I think it was Rogers plain commonsense humor, a certain honesty and telling the truth as he saw it, which
impressed my father. And perhaps also the Rogers ability to deflate great pretensions and poke quiet fun at those in power.
He tells us that if companies gave us much money to developing their products as to advertising them then they wouldn't have
to advertise them. He points out one very large group of unemployed people is the ' advice- givers'. He wryly remarks about
the difference between agriculture in the old days when they paid you to grow things, and agriculture now when they pay you
not to.
He was a much beloved America, a man of the people who seemed a living embodiment of the American faith that the small man who came from a small place could really be the biggest man of all.

I really enjoyed this book-it's very well written, loaded with great pictures, and contains a lot more personal information
that was lacking in other books about Will Rogers that I've read. This book contains a fair amount of his quotes, usually
given along in sync with the events that happened in his life as they unfolded. This would be an excellent book for someone
who has never even heard of Will Rogers, much less read about him-they might get bit with the Will Rogers bug like I have.
My husband brought this book home to me from the library, which is why I can rate it without owning it-but I will own it shortly,
just as soon as my budget allows. And I plan to buy a copy for my father for a gift, as he was born in December of 1923, just
in time to live through the depression and grow up hearing and reading about what this great man had to say the first time
he said or wrote it. Highly recommended reading.

This volume of Coletta's magisterial biography covers Bryan's life from 1908 to his resignation as Secretary of State in June
1915. The account of the Democratic Convention in 1912 is one of the highlights of the book, and makes clear that Bryan was
responsible for Wilson being chosen in that dramatic convention--the account cannot help but make one nostalgic for those
bygone days when presidential nominating conventions were meaningful and full of suspense. Except for Bryan, Champ Clark
would have been nominated and elected president--and it is mind-boggling to think about how the world's history would have
been changed by such a result at the convention. The treatment of Bryan's time as Secreatary of State I did not think as
well done as Arthur Link's account in his volumes on Wilson's presidency. see Wilson: The Struggle for Neutrality 1914-1915,
by Arthur S. Link (read 4 July 1980) A minor flaw in this book is that while the footnotes are where thay are supposed to
be, at the foot of each page, the bibliography does not list all the books cited in the footnotes! A good corrective for
this book's treatment of Wilson's course up to 1917 is The World War and American Isolation 1914-1917, by Ernest R. May (read
1 Nov 1984).

This is the third and final volume of Coletta's biography of Bryan. It covers the years from 1915 to his death just after
the Scopes trial in 1925. It shows that Bryan was of importance in the enactment of five constitutional amendments: the
16th, the 17th, the 18th, the 19th, and the 20th (even tho the 20th did not come to fruition till after his death). The account
of the Scopes trial is carefully done, though Coletta does show some of the more glaring failings of Bryan in his duel with
Darrow. A good and a bit more balanced account of that trial can be found in Summer for the Gods: The Scopes Trial and America's
Continuing Debate Over Science and Religion, by Edward J. Larson (read 3 Oct 1998) (Pulitzer History prize for 1998).

My wife and I predict this will be a classic--it's back to the basics on what Christians must focus on to get meaning out
of everything else. If you've forgotten about the "wonder" of what a daily walk with God looks and feels like, stop everything,
order this book--and get ready to change course. This is beautifully written, with crisp, original "you know he's right"
thinking. Warning: this will cost you! You'll end up sending the book to your friends. (I've already sent it to more than
25 people!)

This is not a "bleeding heart" tree-huggers guide to preserving nature. It is, on the other hand, an academically sound presentation of ideas and rationales that can help one understand that the discussion of the value of, say, a tree goes much further than the amount of money one could obtain by cutting it down and selling it for lumber or pulp.
The book focuses on definitions and examples of different methods of applying value systems to diversity. After all, in this world there is little hope of preserving a thing when its value cannot be identified.
Three main value systems are discussed in the book:
1) Demand value (the economic or market value of a thing or access to a thing)
2) Intrinsic value (the value of the existance of a thing, regardless of its market value -- i.e., the value of a thing because "it is"
3) Transformative value (the likelihood that contact with a thing will change the way humans view that thing and other entities in nature)
Norton uses those value systems to present ideas about why natural diversity ought to be preserved.
This book is, in my opinion, a must read for anyone who teaches about the environment. It should also be read by legislators, and, to tell the truth, it wouldn't hurt many environmentalists to read it either!
A highly recommended book. 5 stars!
