Will Rogers: A Photo-Biography

Review Date: 2002-03-07
I really enjoyed this book-it's very well written, loaded with great pictures, and contains a lot more personal information that was lacking in other books about Will Rogers that I've read. This book contains a fair amount of his quotes, usually given along in sync with the events that happened in his life as they unfolded. This would be an excellent book for someone who has never even heard of Will Rogers, much less read about him-they might get bit with the Will Rogers bug like I have. My husband brought this book home to me from the library, which is why I can rate it without owning it-but I will own it shortly, just as soon as my budget allows. And I plan to buy a copy for my father for a gift, as he was born in December of 1923, just in time to live through the depression and grow up hearing and reading about what this great man had to say the first time he said or wrote it. Highly recommended reading.

Good conclusion to a great biography

Review Date: 2005-07-10
This is the third and final volume of Coletta's biography of Bryan. It covers the years from 1915 to his death just after the Scopes trial in 1925. It shows that Bryan was of importance in the enactment of five constitutional amendments: the 16th, the 17th, the 18th, the 19th, and the 20th (even tho the 20th did not come to fruition till after his death). The account of the Scopes trial is carefully done, though Coletta does show some of the more glaring failings of Bryan in his duel with Darrow. A good and a bit more balanced account of that trial can be found in Summer for the Gods: The Scopes Trial and America's Continuing Debate Over Science and Religion, by Edward J. Larson (read 3 Oct 1998) (Pulitzer History prize for 1998).

If You Forget What It's All About

My wife and I predict this will be a classic--it's back to the basics on what Christians must focus on to get meaning out of everything else. If you've forgotten about the "wonder" of what a daily walk with God looks and feels like, stop everything, order this book--and get ready to change course. This is beautifully written, with crisp, original "you know he's right" thinking. Warning: this will cost you! You'll end up sending the book to your friends. (I've already sent it to more than 25 people!)

Work Addiction

Review Date: 2006-08-11
Work addiction is the most accepted and encouraged of all the addictions. Super-responsible, compulsive workers may receive accolades, slaps on the back and fat paychecks, yet they may be held hostage by this serious disease, a condition that can destroy relationships and kill people.

Here addiction expert Bryan Robinson, himself a recovering work addict, distinguishes between healthy work production and compulsive overworking and provides a personalized plan for recovery. His Work Addiction Risk Test lets you know how this insidious disease may affect you.

If you have trouble finding balance between your work and personal life, this may be the most importanty book you ever read.

Excellent Resource for the Clinician working with this group

Bryan Robinson has written a highly readable, yet exceedingly specific and "hands-on" training book for the treatment of children of alcoholics. He is able to capture their specific clinical problem areas, and to give step by step instruction in ways to intervene. His description of the use of groupwork has been invaluable to this clinician, both in my own clinical work, and in my role as teacher to other clinicians. He is also able to incorporate the research of other pioneers in this field in in order to substantiate his ideas

The key primary document of the Scopes "Monkey" Trial
Helpful Votes: 20 out of 21 total.
Review Date: 2000-11-24
This book is NOT by John Thomas Scopes, who did not pen his autobiography "Center of the Storm" until after the release of the film version of "Inherit the Wind" rekindled interest in his 1925 trial in Dayton, Tennessee. This volume contains the "complete stenographic record" of the trial, which was published that same year as "The World's Most Famous Court Trial." The book is supplemented by the text of William Jennings Bryan's undelivered antievolution speech, caricatures of the various lawyers, and photographs of the proceedings. This volume should not be confused with the official trial transcript and the only point at which the absolute accuracy of the record is suspect is the end of the celebrated cross-examination of Bryan by Clarence Darrow. Several of the first person accounts of the conclusion of that infamous encounter have lawyers yelling things that are not preserved in this record, but it is not all that farfetched to imagine the bedlam at the moment and the impossibility of maintaining an accurate record. Besides, Judge Raulston ruled the exchange inadmissible when court reconvened.

I did my dissertation on the Scopes Trial and if you are interested in doing anything with the case or its still vibrant issues, this book contains your primary documentation. Do not get caught up with what people SAY about the trial, READ the transcript. Many history books confuse the "Inherit the Wind" version of what happened with the real trial (most importantly, Bryan volunteered the idea the days of Genesis were not literally twenty-four hour periods, he was not cornered into the admit ion). This trial is as fascinating today as it was 75 years ago.

Yummy Colors: A Pull-and-pop Book (Let's Find out) is a wonderful I-can-do-it experience for pre-schoolers with lots of pop-outs to entertain and educate and surprise! The colors are so vibrant in these photographs, that children will be quite attracted to them. What's fun is that the colors are made to be associated with various foods of the same color. Young readers will explore this book and learn the name for the colors. With each section that can be pulled-out, they also will be surprised to find additional words associated with food.

This is a great book to teach your child about colors and food, and can also be used to lure them into exploring some new food on their plates at dinnertime! Great little book on very sturdy paper!

Love it!
