I bought this book because my one and a half year old LOVES dogs. She has looked through this book a thousand times. I am actually ordering another one because I fear we may loss it. Besides being a "picture book" for my little one, I have read about the dogs and their history. It is a fascinating book with great information from the origin of the dog to the life expectancy of the breed. Love it!

Outstanding work on policy dynamics
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-08-08
Frank Baumgartner and Bryan Jones have written one of the more interesting books on political change, "Agendas and Instability in American Politics," in which they use the metaphor of punctuated equilibrium theory from biology to explain the norm of stasis in policy discourse, punctuated by periods of dramatic change to a new equilibrium.

This edited work serves as a nice follow up to that earlier, estimable volume. The authors note that this work explores (page 1) "some long-term trends in the development of American politics and public policy." They identify two goals to be met by this book: (1) to further demonstrate the power of their punctuated equilibrium theory of politics; (2) to introduce readers of the volume to the wealth of data drawn upon and to spur future research in the area.

Readers without some background in political science will doubtless find this rather difficult material. However, for those with a modicum of knowledge about political science, this is a rich volume. The first part of the book features discussion of positive and negative feedback in politics and in the study of political dynamics.

Parts two and three focus on a variety of case studies by different researchers. Examples of policies covered in Part two include telecommunication policy, immigration reform, science and technology policy, and national security. Part three is more interested in structures of decision making, such as the use of omnibus legislation and changing agendas of Congress and the Supreme Court.

Part four is one chapter, authored by the two editors, in which they reflect upon the issues addressed throughout this book. In the end, they speak to the role of democracy in policy change and policy making.

For those interested in the policy process and its dynamics, this is a valuable addition to the literature.

This book is a burst power! It's a quick read, but each page is potent -- none of the usual anecdotal stories just to lenghthen the book. I've read the book 4-times already; keep going back because each page is captivating. Perfect size for travel & its relevant for my teen and young adult children too. --I'm already in line for his next book!

Teaching the real power of RPG
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-05-10
I have been in the IT industry about 10 years working with RPG and have lost touch with what it is like to learn RPG from the ground up. I had a business need to get three individuals up to speed fast with RPG and one of my main concerns is that they learn the latest techniques vs. old coding styles. This book was exactly what I was looking for because in the 4th edition it was gone through from start to finish and implemented things like free format, the newest BIFs/OPCodes, and even introduced WDSC!

Another scenario I think this book would be great for is teaching programmers of other languages about RPG. It is nothing new to anybody that RPG programmers are getting hard to find, so an approach that can save your investment in you iSeries is train individuals who already know other languages to learn to use RPG - this book would be a perfect fit for that.

I would definitely recommend this book be used for the purposes I described above!

The absolute classic resource for making wine. Old, but correct on the technology and chemistry of winemaking. It is a bit dated in its review of wine-making regions of the world. Very good recipes, some quite easy and reliable to make. A must have for anyone wanting to take the next step from beginner to accomplished amateur.

This book is another excellent example of the Ballantine Illustrated History of WW II series. It covers in very good detail the prehistory, developement and operational history of the Motor Torepedo Boats of both sides Axis & Allies in all theatres of the war. It also is very generously illustrated with some very good photos. Altogether a good buy if this is a subject you are interested in.

I would recommend this book to people who have browsed the web and now want to get involved in writing their own web pages. I love the fact its Macintosh oriented! Also, this book takes you through a (brief) history of hypertext, html, etc. and explains (briefly) the controversies between purists and standardizers - I have a better understanding of where all this came from. Pfaffenberger is an excellent and entertaining writer - maybe a little tiny bit simplistic in some ways but not condescendingly patronizing and very thorough. After having looked through several books including "HTML for Dummies" (definitely condescending) and another thick book professing to give you everything you need to know on running a website (which was written by a compendium of people and assumed you understood all sorts of things) - I would say this is a great starting point. (I rated a 9 because I feel there is ALWAYS room for improvement...)
