Mark Millar continues to impress with this collection of the Ultimates. The entire Ultimate universe has been a breath of fresh air to Marvel charaters. Don't get me wrong, the originals are still great, but I can see how this might open things up to a new generation.
We see in this volume how there really are aliens in this universe, though many have doubted it, as well as the validity of Loki and the gods of Asgard. Very good, and I hope to see more in the future!

A Traitor Is Revealed As The Ultimates Get Busy!

This one may be the best since The Ultimates, Vol. 2 - Homeland Security. In this one, Captain America is arrested for the murder of fellow Ultimate teammate Hawkeye and his family!

But all isn't what it seems as both a traitor (its not who you think) and a new player (who was revealed in The Ultimates 2, Vol. 1 - Gods & Monsters) emerge to push America itself to the brink of destruction as SHIELD, The Ultimates and even their versions of The X-Men, Spider-Man and The Fantastic Four are taken prisoners by The Liberators, a group of foreigners who are counterparts to The Ultimates and SHIELD.

Returning to help The Ultimates are The Hulk, Iron-Man and Captain Britian but can even these people free the heroes in time to take back America from The Liberators?

Personal opinion is that this book is worth the $20 or less that you will pay for it! Great story and great art!

Word of warning though! It may be a comic book but this is DEFINITELY NOT FOR KIDS! This is definitely for the adults!

A pedestrian conclusion to a high-flying title

Largely, the Ultimate universe avoids Stan Lee camp, in favor of a darker, modern style. Characters are deeper, more modern and more mature.

Ultimates (1 and 2) was leading this charge - not just with the revamped Captain America, but with all the Avengers. They lived in a more 'real' world, facing more 'real' challenges - political, ethical and personal - as well as the traditional super-villain shenanigans. Almost (but not quite) Marvel's The Authority.

Then, in the concluding volume of Ultimates 2, the series lazily reverts into old-school Marvel goofiness: The Axis of Evil makes their own Avengers! Super-bun-fight! NORSE MYTHS invade. What just happened? Real problems suddenly have goofy, supernatural sources and everything is neatly solved with an old-fashioned fist-fight.

Not so much... bad (this is the time-honored Marvel tradition), just a disappointment. The Ultimates series is the flagship for the Ultimate universe, and I wanted to see it become more than 'same as before, plus naughty language'.

Awesome - a must read for fans!

This volume caps the series and is a Must Read for fans of the Ultimates. The artwork is superb, the story exciting with the sort of writing that is new to the world of comics: real emotions and situations, real relationships that span months (not single issues!) all in a sci-fi world that's not all that different from our own. (Well, okay, the whole super powers thing isn't commonplace around here... but other than that...!)

Great fun, very involving - go get it!

Nearly flawless ending to Millar/Hitch's run

So after burning through the first 3/4 of the series, I tore through this in a day. It was all leading up to this. So many burning question were resting on this finale to deliver. The team was at its ultimate low, and there is definitely a traitor in their midst. Well as the story unravels, so does the mystery. I didn't think it was incredibly predictable, (although it wasn't too difficult), but it felt like it was wrapped up too easily. There were plenty of red herrings and clues to sort of narrow things down, but when it came down to it, I felt it was sort of a cop out explanation.

The cover depicts The Ultimates going into battle with the likes of the X-Men, FF, and Spider-man which leads you to believe those characters are featured. They are, but very briefly. It's a great cover, but to me it was quite misleading. I enjoyed the fact that they only focus on The Ultimates because I didn't want the flow of the character development to be disrupted, but just goes to show you can't judge a comic book by its cover art, its job is to sell the book. Not trying to spoil anything, just don't go in thinking its a team up book and be dissapointed. I would have rather not known they were going to be in it and be surprised by the cameos.

An otherwise good finale, it ties up loose ends while still not skimping on the action (the group finds themselves in the middle of WWIII) and manages to still leave me wanting more. While I think Millar and Hitch were an awesome team (Hitch's work is so consistently good throughout) I'm even more excited that Jeph Loeb will be taking over for Ultimates 3 along with artist Joe Madureira. Loeb had me at The Long Halloween so I will pretty much read anything he's written and if he can continue with the streak he's been having I have no doubt it will be worth my effort. From what I've seen of the preview art, I can't say grabs me nearly as much as Hitch's series defining artwork, but maybe it'll grow on me.

Not the biggest shocker of an ending that I was psyched up for, but still not a complete disaster and is worth picking up to complete the arc. It's nice to be reading Marvel again after so long and remembering what was so great about it. Congratulations to Millar/Hitch on a job well done.

The Best "Arkansas Outdoor" Book

Arkansas A Guide to Backcountry Travel & Adventure, by Bryan Hendricks, is in my opinion, the best source for information about outdoor activities in Arkansas currently available. I have read several titles that have promised useful information on this subject, but Mr. Hendricks' book has got the most complete listings of places to go and things to do in the most reader-friendly format of any of my previous purchases. I have 3 young children, and accurate information is vital to me when it comes to planning a trip. This book lets me know exactly what to expect when I'm considering a weekend jaunt with my family. Nothing can ruin an otherwise nice outing for me more than getting to a place and finding it totally different than it has been described to me. I have already been to several of the recreation areas mentioned in this book, and have found the author's assessments to be right on track. Therefore, I feel like I can trust Mr. Hendricks' observations when I am planning future excursions with my family. Arkansas A Guide to Backcountry Travel & Adventure, published by Out There Press, covers every region of the state in an easy-to-use layout, complete with locations, maps, activities permitted, contact information, ranger station locations, and also gives you names of businesses in the immediate area which may be of use while on an outing. Everything is easy to understand, with emphasis placed on hiking, camping, canoeing, fishing, and my personal favorite, mountain biking. It is so hard to get accurate information on what is permitted, and when and where, that the contacts included with the book will make it a valuable refernce for years to come. I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to find outdoor activities in Arkansas, as I feel there is not a single wasted page between its covers.

This is a terrific book, even for people who only occasionally venture into the woods on a hike. The author has obviously visited every one of the Arkansas parks and hiked the trails he describes. He tells the reader important details like, the location of the closest pay telephone, where the nearest supply store is and even if the people are friendly. There's information about camping, lodging, hiking trails and advice about scenic stops. This is a great gift for anyone who ever has or ever intends to visit an Arkansas park.

If you are looking for an expert, detailed guide to a backcountry adventure or just a highly readable armchair simulation, read this book. It offers detailed suggestions not only to surviving the wilds but thriving in them. ARKANSAS appeals to hiker, naturalist, and layman alike with each district and area offering a general overview for trip selection. Following each of these are detailed maps with topographical descriptions, seasonal guides to vegetation and animals, climate expectations, clothing needs, and equipment recommendations. Also, there are comprehensive activitity guides to camping, canoeing, fishing, biking, and hiking. The book traverses the state like its rivers: from the high-plateau Ozark Mountains of the Northwest, down the Arkansas River Valley, through the piney woods of the Ouachita Mountains, across the fertile cotton, rice, and soybean fields of the Delta to the blackwater swamps of the Southeast. The author's expertise is impressive, but more than this, the book reflects a deep appreciation, respect, and love of backcountry Arkansas.

I recently read the book "Arkansas, A Guide to Backcountry Travel and Adventure", written by Bryan Hendricks in anticipation of a combined canoe and back-country exploration of the Buffalo River Area in North west Arkansas. I was pleasantly surprised to find all the information I needed for both the canoe trip and back country hiking trip contained in the same book! Usually, my trips require purchase of at least two different books: one for the whitewater and one for the back-country; but not in this case. This is the first time I've planned a combined journey with the luxury of finding all the needed information, map references, portages, and trail heads in one comprehensive volume. Great work, Bryan!

I was also fascinated upon further reading by the anecdotal information in the book which made for an interesting and "not-so-dry" read. The story of the "Legend of Boggy Creek" was particularly enjoyable and should provide a good discussion point for any family camping trip.

Thanks again for the excellent book and perhaps I'll see Mr. Hendricks on the Buffalo River this April.

When it comes to backcountry travel in Arkansas, I consider myself an expert, but Arkansas, A Guide to backcountry Travel & Adventure, took me to places where even I've never been! The ultimate test of a book like this is accuracy, and the author earned my trust immediately when I looked up a couple of places I know very well. His descriptions are dead-on, and his lively writing style is a lot spicier than what one normally sees in this type of book. I mean, if you didn't want to visit the Sulphur River Wildlife Management Area on the merits of its recreational opportunities alone, how could you resist after reading Hendricks' passage about the legendary Fouke Monster, which supposedly inhabits the area? This book is just full of juicy little tidbits like that to complement its impressive array of how-to, where-to information. I haven't had my copy very long, but it's already well worn from my travels around the state. I consider it as necessary as a backpack and canoe paddle, and when it's no longer serviceable, I won't hesitate to replace it.

Bryan Currie uses a voice in his book that allows the reader to feel as if you are having a great one on one coversation. He conveys his thoughts, feelings, and personal stories just as he would if you were sitting in a coffee shop or talking over dinner. I admire an author who lets his personality shine through his writing and Mr. Currie does just that. The subject matter ebbs and flows from fun stories to deep subject matter and back again, all with skill and grace. Overall, I have enjoyed this book and continue to pick it up and read a chapter now and again, just to have a conversation.

No matter how long you have been married, you must always remember that God comes first. This book reminds us that a healthy, Godly marriage works in this order: 1)God, 2) Marriage 3) Self 4) Children 5) All Else. Without Him, a marriage is doomed. This book has allowed me and my Wife to address minor and major issues using God's direction. This is actually a second publishing, with the first being mostly secular. The authors have taken scripture and make it very clear that God wants marriage to be Spirirtually based. No matter what issue you may be having in your marriage, using God's directives can heal all wounds - past and present. As a Chaplain and a Counselor, I have found this to be the ultimate guide to healing a realtionship. I now recommend this book to all my clients, regardless of their religious beliefs. It provides scripture as an adjunct to the core message of each topic, and is very easy to follow. The authors have written it so that one may read a section regarding their specific problem, or it can be read in the order it was written. If you are yearning to have a Godly marriage - THIS IS THE MANUAL YOU NEED. Peace and God Be With You.

I'll keep this short. Low-end house investments aren't for everyone. However, this book hit me like a Mack Truck...I couldn't put it down and have referred many friends to this excellent work. I have read well over 100 real estate investment courses and books in the last 12 years of my life and NONE (even those outrageously priced $800 courses) spoke to me like this $40 gem. Thank you Bryan for sharing your experiences and wisdom with us and doing it at a bargain price. My very highest recommendation to all (even though I don't want any more competition in this arena) LOL.

This is the only review I've done and even though this book will undoutedly bring in more investors to this low-end niche--I feel I owe a real debt to Bryan for his positive impact on my life.

It seems like most of the books/info published out there is targeting "nice" single family homes and creative financing techniques. What most people don't realize is that smart investors salivate over the the investment opportunities in low end housing. Reason being is that by virtue of being lower priced they can be paid off sooner and the owner can then point the cash flow toward other low end investments that can be paid off even quicker with the addition of the cash flow of the recently paid off property. These end up being small "annuities", as Bryan beautifully describes them, that are so highly valued in today's pension-less, menaced social security system world.

So instead of learning how to find fancy financing and distressed owners, I would say that learning how to manage lower end housing and it's inherent intricacies would be a person's more efficient and likely path to acquiring wealth in real estate.

This book, and anything published by Bryan, in my opinion, is a must read.

I want to give credit to Bryan Wittenmyer for writing a highly informative piece on low-end housing investments.

However I do not feel that low-end housing is the way to go. These types of properties will appreciate the least, yet they involve the most hassles. You really have to get a good deal to make it worth it and get cash flow.

You could buy 20 different real estate books with fancy covers that all basically have the same content or you could buy this one and have the best book on the subject.

Bravo! Finally a book which the layperson can understand! Low on jargon and insider buzzwords, it's high on clarity, timliness, and practicality. The book reads easily, and answers all those questions mused upon by the average person. The touch of humor was a welcome respite to such a ponderous subject, and I'm looking forward to Mr. Williams next volume. Hopefully it wll expand upon actual scenarios, discuss legal cautions, and reinforce the principles set forth in this work. A read worthy of one's precious time this.

Welcome to the Real World will fill you in quickly, and give you no nonsense information about how to recognize danger, avoid it, and if you cannot avoid it, how to handle it. The power of the book comes from the fact that the author knows what he is talking about - he has been there and done that, and wants to make sure his knowledge and experience can help the reader. As a fellow author, I also found the book to be written in and informative, yet entertaining style. I will recommend this book to all of my students.

I had to put the book down several times because I felt sick. Bryan's writing was so real that I felt every terrifying and treacherous moment along the way. Just when a dangerous jouney ended, another began. I am so overwhelmed with what Bryan experienced in the Congo. I know him personally as well as his family, and I can't imagine what they all went through at their own levels.
I applaud Bryan Mealer for the excellent portrayal of a dire situation. I admire his wife, Ann Marie, and family for living through all of the reports, emails and contacts from Bryan throughout his entire journey.
BRAVO, Bryan, for the intensity, honesty, and real depiction of the situation in the Congo that we should all be aware of and concerned about.

I've been reading articles and stories by Bryan Mealer for several years. In the early years, Bryan wrote some hilarious and interesting articles about bizarre subjects like the west Texas Rattlesnake Round-up. I really enjoyed his voice and continued to read his articles in Harper's and Esquire. I was thrilled to see he had written a book, and after reading All Things Must Fight to Live, I realize I owe a debt of gratitude to Bryan for sacrificing his own naivetee to bring this eloquent, gritty and painfully honest account of the horrors and beauty to me so that I may become less myopic. In my personal quest to uncover and grasp that common thread that binds us all, Bryan's stories give me something solid to hold onto. It is a must read for anyone seeking to broaden their view of the world and to understand conflicts and wars that are more than soundbites.

Bryan Mealer brought to life a place that, sadly, most of us know little or care even less about. He takes far off characters in a far off war and gives them an easy familiarity. This book is not for the faint of heart--the war in Congo has killed millions through combat and disease, and Mealer does not shy away from its most brutal details. And yet, he does not revel in them either, as so many war correspondents haphazardly do. He simply writes what he sees. And what he sees is pretty amazing stuff. Highly recommended.

On one level, this book easily falls into the category of "couldn't put it down". The writing style and the level of interest generated by each chapter makes the reader feel as if events are being described by a friend sitting across the table. The Q&A chapter continues this same writing style. Each chapter contains accounts and experiences in the context of common "ailments" carried around by us humans. This book is a good buy for it's entertainment value if nothing else.

But unlike many other books, this book can provide the reader with new avenues of self-exploration. This book grabs your attention as you read it and never releases it. Although you can put his book down, the possibilities it presents will probably never leave your mind. This book's presentation of societies most controversial subjects are bound to jar even the most skeptical and closed minds. Before you realize you're going to read this book a second and third time, you're going to stop and read it more slowly and carefully the first time.

Exploring Our Forgotten Lives unfolds as a choreographed mystery full of suspense, intrigue, sex, murder and mystery. Yet, this is no book of fiction and Bryan Jameison with the compassionate insight and awareness of a Master gently unravels painful traumas that affect his clients. I marveled at the transformations as emotional burdens and painful events were released, deeply healing individual realities. It becomes clear how the burden of emotional traumas from past lives block our full experience of joy today. I could not put this book down as I travelled back in time with each person. I cried, I laughed, and I cheered for the healing of the human spirit. Exploring Our Forgotten Lives is an eye-opener! If you've ever wondered what the past has to do with the present, I urge you to pick up this book! You won't want to put it down!

I've read many books on reincarnation and this is the first one that specifically discusses the benefits of past-life regression and past-life therapy. Bryan Jameison uses actual case studies to illustrate how past-life trauma can cause present day afflictions such as migraine headaches, chronic abdominal pain, compulsive behavior, phobias and low self-esteem. He has found that even the cause of birth defects may stem from a past life. Also included are case histories that illustrate that the purpose Karma is balance and harmony, not punishment as many believe. Mr. Jameison also explains that prior to our birth, we chose all the major events and relationships we experience in a lifetime. Our choices may be distorted by fear, guilt or anger carried over from a past life. Through past-life therapy, the person can and often is able to eliminate these detrimental feelings. For me, the most profound statement in the book was that if we were supposed to be someone else, we would have chosen to have incarnated as that person.

Out of all the past life books I have read, this is by far the most original and unique in its approach. Jameison writes with a refreshing clarity that can be humorous yet instructive. His non-hypnotic approach to past life therapy makes the most sense, especially when coupled with the releasing technique which provides the true benefits his patients are seeking. There are no punches pulled in this very open, honest and candid book. If you want the truth, and not some sugar coated version, this is what you are looking for. The last chapter alone, about "The Creative Decision Process," is worth the cost of the entire book. Buy it, read it with an open mind, and it could change your life, now and in your next incarnation.

Bridge Over Troubled Church History

Americans are notoriously ignorant of the past, and American Christians are no exception. What little people do claim to know are often distortions of the past and are generally two-dimensional. Church history, moreover, can actually be discouraging to Evangelicals who might at best peer through the scratched lens of fragmented history and see only abusive popes, intrigue, politics, and schism.

Yet Dr. Litfin has built a bridge over that admittedly troubled Church history to bring out the humanity of those brave believers of the nascent Church. No longer should we be content to choose between stale academic treatments or pithy portraits produced by self-serving and ignorant authors. Dr. Litfin introduces the reader to real people with real struggles while simultaneously educating the Evangelical enthusiast as to the larger canvas of the impact these key individuals had on the development of Christianity. Moreover, reading this with an open mind will help Evangelicals work through the tension of a messy Church history that nevertheless brought out courage and faithfulness of men and women during times of great challenge to Christianity's very survival. What a message of hope for us in our day!

As other reviewers note, the language is accessible and fresh, though one should not dismiss its historical depth; on the contrary, the author displays a persistent commitment to authenticity and accuracy. The professional and layman would do well to add this to their personal library.

Dr. Litfin's "Getting to Know the Church Fathers" is an excellent introductory text that fulfills exactly what the title proclaims. Litfin provides a intriguing historical accounts of men who protected the early Christian church. He accurately describes the church Fathers without making them righteous as he digs out both their saintly and sinful deeds.

Dr. Litfin teaches an introductory class titled Christianity and Western Culture at Moody Bible Institute that covers the majority of the content of his book. This past semester I had the privilege of being in this class. As I read "Getting to Know the Church Fathers" I felt as if I was once again in the same room with Dr. Litfin as he teaches not from a heady pious standpoint, but from a humble, learning stance. His goal is not to overwhelm or guilt but to reveal those who have gone before us, who have paved the way, and to call us to the same standard.

If you cannot take Christianity and Western Culture read this book.

Dr. Litfin's Book "Getting to Know the Church Fathers", overall is a helpful overview of a topic that modern Christians know very little about. He sheds important light on some of the doctrinal disputes came about, and how these figures were influential in shaping Christianity as we know it today. Another part of this book which i particularly enjoyed was that Dr. Litfin included short sections of writings from the church fathers.

Dr. Litfin writes in a very plain style and is very easy to read. However, one of the downfalls in being so easy to read is that in some cases the book becomes to feel like it is not especially scholarly. This is demonstrated by his introduction to the church fathers in which he gave short modern anecdotes which i found to be superfluous. Moreover, another issue that he had with this book was it seemed to me that Dr. Litfin skimmed over or ignored altogether some of the blemishes that these Church Fathers had.

Overall, this book is definitely worth reading. Dr. Litfin has indeed blessed the church with this work.

Bryan Liftin has written a very inclusive and dynamic book about the early church fathers, an excellent narrative of historical, biographical and theological themes. Full disclosure: I am not an evangelical Christian so I cannot comment from that perspective whether the book fulfills a need for that community. However, as one studying more about Eastern Orthodox Christianity I can say without fear of contradiction that this book provides anyone interested in the origins and development of the Christian ideas and beliefs which are still current in modern times a broad and intelligent introduction. Liftin covers the trail blazed by the early Fathers in a linear approach, looking both at the history of the life of each one but also how each develops the important articles of faith and determination of the sacred texts from their predecessors. One can read how the theology of the Trinity, for example, accepted by almost all Christian faiths of today was painstakingly developed and resolved in a sometimes conflicting and contradictory manner. The reader is readily engaged by Lifkin in this pursuit and can follow a path made very clear despite so many fits and stumbles during those early days. You can easily see how dedicated the Fathers were to the insistence on truth and true knowledge and understanding of Christ as a living person and as the transcendent eternal son of the Father. All of us who have believed in Christianity owe a great debt to the precision and life-long dedication of these remarkable historical figures and their writings concerning the true faith. Lifkin spends very little time proselytizing about the evangelical Christian's perspective, which really adds much to the fact that I think anyone of Christian belief will find this work enlightening, well documented, and 'orthodox', meaning the one truth unchanged as it was given to the Fathers from the Apostles. There's no question that he is opening a new door for fundamentalist Christians by acceding to the idea that the tradition which was given to the Church and maintained through the early Fathers is extremely relevant to evangelicals as it is to Eastern Orthodox and the Church of Rome and its various off-shoots such as the Anglican, Lutheran and Calvinist faiths.

I had an edition in the 1950's when I was in college, then bought the updated 5th edition in the 1960's. I have newer, bulkier books like _Chicago Manual_ of Style but for conciseness, correctness and convenience this little book is still my favorite. My advice, get an older edition if you can find it. My little book can fit in a large pocket, yet it is complete.

Two or three millenia ago, when I first began college, the assigned handbook was the Harbrace, then in the second or third edition. Since then I have ben a military officer, a professional writer, a manager, and a teacher. Through each of these incarnations I have had the Harbrace at my elbow. I have never failed to find exactly the right advice, the right emphasis, and even the right choices to make my writing eminently readable.
Although its style is not didactic, it does present enough examples to keep both the old and the new writer from wandering off into that muddy stuff we se so often in magazines.
Buy one! That and a Strunk and White are all you need.
