Very enjoyable read! The story starts out pretty mellow, then cranks up the pace and packs a real punch in the end. The ending has a powerful, poetic quality to it. Jake, the main character, is an appealing guy who approaches life and those around him with an interesting perspective and almost zen-like forgiveness. Those familiar with the San Francisco Bay Area -- particularly Santa Cruz and San Jose -- will recognize a lot of local flavor in the book. Basically, the plot goes like this: Jake is a drug runner who wants to get out of the business and Silicon Valley, and to have a quiet life somewhere, possibly teaching english. While at this crossroad, he runs into some old friends at a Rocky Horror Picture Show convention and becomes embroiled in a blackmail scheme to save the local Rocky Horror theater from being sold and turned into a bookstore. It's a seemingly simple story, but with all the twists and turns, I kept wanting to know what was going to happen next.

church history in broader context

Houston Bryan Roberson tells the story here of the church served by the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., from 1954 to 1960. For many readers, that will be the highlight. But FIGHTING THE GOOD FIGHT is far more than that. Roberson tells the story of the church from its founding by ex-slaves, on through 1977. And he does so in a way that is not just narrow institutional history, but rather does a very good job of placing the story in broader context of issues going on at the time, including, of course, the civil rights movement. I highly recommend this book.

Never before have I lived so many of my life experiences through someone else's mind. "Filling in the Empty Spaces" exemplifies spiritual understanding and wisdom by surrendering to Spirit. To put it simply, this book has reminded me of several powerful life lessons and affirmations; Don't spend major time with minor people, I AM whole, worthy and complete, Not in my time but Divine time, I AM the master of my life, Divine Power will open the exact doors I need to step into the Light and God Is Enough! I thank the God in you, Bryan, uniquely expressed as you. Continue to live through your life's purpose and claim your success!

The presidential election of 1896 was one of the most interesting and important contests in American history, and it was made so not by the winner (a lackluster Ohio politician named William McKinley) but by the loser, William Jennings Bryan. Although best remembered for the first and last moments of his public career (the "Cross of Gold" speech and his championing of creationism at the Scopes Trial), Bryan was in fact the founding father of modern progressivism. Numerous ideas, ranging from the Federal Reserve and the income tax to anti-imperialism and women's suffrage, can be traced to one of Bryan's three presidential campaigns (1896, 1900, and 1908). What's more, Bryan's personality itself is a study in the best aspects of American character - despite his flaws, he was by all accounts a brilliant orator, devoted husband, loving father, voracious reader and intellectual (although this point is often brought into dispute by his more venomous detractors), sincere believer in democracy and equal opportunity, and often brave champion of causes that no one would touch at the last turn-of-the-century, but which are taken for granted today as being cornerstones of American political progress. This book serves three great functions:
1) It transports the reader back to the presidential election of 1896, truly immersing us in a historic period that has received a much-undeserved obscurity;
2) It shares with us dozens of the early speeches of William Jennings Bryan, thereby exposing us to his oratorical genius and the fertile mind that lay behind the eloquence (reading these speeches is worth the price of the text alone);
3) It gives us an intimate look at the character of William Jennings Bryan himself, a man who brought to the presidency a pro-active and progressive approach that had never before been seen, despite the fact that he was never able to serve in it himself.
The 1890s were a pivotal decade in our nation's history, one in which great and noble men of often diametrically opposing points-of-view (Grover Cleveland, William Jennings Bryan, William McKinley, Marcus Hanna, Eugene Debs, John Peter Atgeld, James Weaver, etc) rose to power and prominence. I cannot imagine that a better book either from or about this period has ever been written. Indeed, I can think of no better book ever written about a presidential campaign. This book should be a must-read for anyone who wishes to study American history, political science, liberalism, and/or the art of rhetoric.

Mr. Malessa takes us on a tour of Eastern Germany during WWII and explores the plight of ethnic Germans and their struggles to survive the holocaust as well. The story follows a mother's tireless efforts to save her children from death, ultimately Mr. Malessa takes you down a dark road, a very detailed and well researched novel that gives you the feeling that you are in the moment with the characters.

This is a simple story about curiosity told in rhyme. The vocabulary might seem a little much at first but I have known 6 and 7 year olds who enjoyed the story. They were able to understand the plot because of the expresive nature of the rhyme and the beautiful pictures, and they learned new words in the bargain. The characters will never be forgotten, and will be invited over for bedtime again and again.
