Nine Professional Essays
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2006-06-13
This very interesting book gives a quick overview of the thinking on naval affairs from the days of sail until now. The book is broken into nine chapters, each covering a different period, each written by a specialist in that particular era.

These years have seen more changes in naval affairs than in the thousand years that went before. In the mid 1800's ships were wooden and powered by sail. Now they are steel and quite possibly nuclear powered. Each of the big wars - WW I and WW II saw dramatic changes in the British Navy, the big gun philosophy of WW I and the impact of air power in WW II.

Further the changes in Britain from having an empire to the commonwealth, to the present alliances such as NATO also had to be reflected in the naval thinking.

This is a professional book aimed to explain the subject to the professional naval officers, military historians, and of course the interested amateurs.

I had the good fortune of reading this little gem of a book upon the recomendation by a close friend. I do not often read Sci Fi / Fantasy fiction but this book was well worth the read. The story takes us through the journey and mind of the its main character, Byron Bigby and in to a world of the surreal and bizarre. It is often difficult to know for sure if what happens in the story is truly happening to the main character or is it simply all in his mind which the author has done nicely to keep us guessing. The story is beautifully writen and grabs and holds the readers attention from begining to end. I can see this book rapidly becoming a cult classic among Sci Fi and Fantasy readers. It is well worth the read. I hope to find more books writen by this talented author.

The collaborative work of elementary school classroom teacher Bev Wirt, elementary school reading specialist Carolyn Domaleski Bryan, and elementary school reading specialist Kathleen Davies Wesley, "Discovering What Works For Struggling Readers: Journeys of Exploration with Primary-grade Students" focuses upon the five teaching principles found to be consistently effective with elementary school students having difficulty in acquiring basic reading skills. The use of anecdotal vignettes and excerpts of student dialogue help to illustrate the application of these principles. Informed and informative, thoughtful and thought-provoking, "Discovering What Works For Struggling Readers" will prove to be invaluable, practical, and applicable reading for anyone charged with the responsibility of helping children learn how to read with skill and enthusiasm.

Dr. Robinson has done a wonderful job of combining personal experiences with basic truths that, at one point in most of our lives, we have all either learned or suspected may be true. Great reading as a morning "thought of the day" or wisdom to fall asleep to. Certainly, we all would be happier if we could remember these lessons as we go through our hectic lives.

I thought this was a great read. Splendid illustrations, well written text. Qucik, easy, and enjoyable. I wanted to know more about the famous battle between the Monitor and Viginia, but didn't want to be bogged down with the text, and I wanted a well illustrated volume. I'm sure that this subject has been written on to no end, but I was more than pleased with this work.
