Insights into traditional farming techniques of the Moors

It'd be tempting to place this survey under 'Home and Garden' for this review - but really, ANCIENT AGRICULTURE: ROOTS AND APPLICATION OF SUSTAINABLE FARMING deserves so much more. It'll reach an audience of farmers, gardeners, and history buffs with the first English translation of Obra de Agricultura, offering an early agricultural instruction manual originally written in Spain in 1513 - and holding importance for modern times. Here are insights into traditional farming techniques of the Moors before their expulsion from Spain: techniques which hold surprising relevance to modern farmers facing global warming and water shortages.

Simple But Imaginative
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2002-03-09
This is one of a series that is now out of print (difficult to find) that teacher vocabulary and let's your imagination fill in the blanks. I was very young, maybe 3 or 4 when my mother used to read these small little hard covered books to me and my sister. They were just the right size to fit in our tiny hands. The stories are simple, two friends, ant and bee go on adventures and discover the world. Angela Banner is a gracious british writer who knows how to stimulate children's minds by feeding them very little. As the author introduces a word, she prints in red and repeats it through the text. The fun part is that, as I grew older, I would say the words in red print out loud. I learned how to read with Ant & Bee books!

Superb pictures and excellent text
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2004-09-30
This book is a permanent reminder to me of this fascinating continent, its surrounding ocean and the wildlife that inhabit them. The book starts with an introduction then a chapter setting the historical background. Next comes a chapter describing the ecology of the three main regions - the continent of Antarctica, the maritime Antarctic (the ocean surrounding Antarctica) and the sub-Antarctic - further out, including South Georgia and nearby islands. Penguins and albatrosses each have a chapter to themselves with all other birds (cormorants, gulls, skuas, wakes, petrels and pigeons) grouped together in another chapter. A chapter on seals and a chapter on wildlife photography in the Antarctic complete the main book (there is an appendix and an index).

The longest chapters is the one devoted to penguins - at forty pages, it is double the length of the next longest chapter. Quite right too, as penguins are what most people think of when they think of Antarctica. You may be thinking that one penguin is much the same as another - if so, you'd be wrong. In fact, there are eight different species, thought the Royals only nest on Macquarie Island. The others are Emperor, Adelie, Chinstrap, Gentoo, Macaroni, Rockhopper and King. Each species has its own distinguishing characteristics - for example, the Royal, Rockhopper and Macaroni penguins all have crests. The Emperor and King penguins (as their names suggest) are much larger than the other species.

This well-written book has a lot of information about the birds and seals of the region, matched by many spectacular photographs. If you are interested in Antarctica, this book is well worth looking for.

This is an authoritative study of "early music" in the Western World. It is the textbook for a course I will be taking in the fall which studies this period. I have also purchased the CDs which are imperative to the understanding of the text.

Women lead social movements for total transformation!
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 1998-12-07
Terisa Turner and the contributors to this collection break new ground in both analysing and predicting directions of social change. The new ground arises from the combined treatment of woman-man relations, race and class in practical cases in contemporary social struggle. Take gender to begin with. Turner's conception, outlined in the first two chapters, is based on the view that unpaid work of women undergrids corporate profits and hence any talk of social class must also include analysis of relations between women and men. The subsequent chapters proceed to document the importance of gender in social movements geared to abolishing exploitation and injustice founded on class. Rastafari in both East Africa, where the Pan-African movement originated, and in the Caribbean where it has flourished, is presented by Turner as a post-capitalist, global way of life which brings together a vast array of social groups united by the value of human life as opposed to profits and speculation. Other analyses of Kenya's social struggles, those of women in Nigeria's oilbelt, those opposed to the 1991 Gulf War take further the book's central thesis: when women's fundamental security is threatened they organize a movement of resistance, and this movement's success depends on a section of their menfolk breaking away from 'male deals' with exploiters and joining women in a struggle for transformational justice. This thesis is expressed in Seth Tobacman's shocking graphics ('the discovery of america and tompkins square park') and in Trinidadian Brother Book's powerful poem, 'message to the intellectuals from the grassroot' The collection of fight-back chronicles was inspired by the high points of the democracy movements of the late 1980s and early 1990s and has never been more relevant as the neo-liberal order crumbles under its own weight and irrationality at the beginning of the new millenium. The marxism of CLR James informs each chapter.
