TAVERN AT THE EDGE OF NOWHERE is not what you expect -- it's a lot more. It's funny. Not just amusing funny, or chuckle funny, but sometimes laugh out loud funny. It's thought-provoking. It's everything you look for and more. It's not for everyone, mind you. You have to read for more than just passing the time. But if what you read matters, this is a good book to pick up.

This is a time travel story with a difference. It is interesting and funny. A remarkable novel of considerable entertainment value. Mr Joyce's sence of humor is distinctly warped. My only complaint is that the book is a little on the short side. Even so, this is one for the serious collector as I can see a bright future for this author. The story really rolls. Never a dull moment. Would make an excellent movie. I wish the author luck, but hope that his next book is a bit longer.

The Tavern At The Edge Of Nowhere is a time travel story full of original ideas. On the journey there is romance, plenty of laughs and some ‘darker’ moments. New concepts are introduced and old ones bent out of shape. It is the rather unusual story of Tony Wheelbough. In extreme depression after the death of his girlfriend, he disappears off into the Scottish mountains. The intent is suicide. Instead, he gets VERY drunk, and meets a weirdo with a time machine. Tony ends up at the Edge Of Nowhere, where he is ‘persuaded’ to become the barman at The Tavern. Once there, he quickly discovers that the patrons can be more that just a little bit ‘unusual’. Read an unusual detective story in ‘Love, Death And An American Car’. Contemporary horror as you read of the serial killer known only as ‘The Jawman’. All this and more in something that flows as smooth a honey off a warm spoon. Individual sub-plots fitting seamlessly into the frame that is The Tavern At The Edge Of Nowhere. Several folk have compared the writing style to Douglas Adams (which is unintentional) and this book has won the April 2001 Book Of The Month award at BookNet .... Trust me, you will enjoy it! ....

I HIGHLY recommend this book! I came upon it in a local library years ago and it blew me away!

She writes such truths, that if you have struggled with your weight, you will right away identify with. And take away such great insight and revelation.

It really is a grand book, I am surprised it has never been reprinted!

I fondly remember that when I first read a review of this book in a fitness magazine in April, 1980, my mother called the publisher and ordered it for me.
I still have my orignal copy: tattered cover, text full of underlining, highlighting, and my comments in the margins. Many excellent books on the market today harken back to Nancy Bryan's "non-striving" concept that she so aptly illustrated long before most people were writing about it. I have read the book over and over again. Some of her points make so much sense and ofter occur to me when I think about the horrors of compulsive eating and impatient weight loss. For instance, she points out that if you heard about a magical scheme to have a baby in 3 months you would never believe it. So why believe that you can "lose 20 pounds in 20 days"?
Dr. Bryan helped me to understand that weight loss is about so much more than "dieting" at a time when most of the literature was touting one quick "cure" or another and I was feeling more and more hopeless because of my lack of "willpower." It is so comforting to remember that I am not worthless because I lack willpower; I simply need to stop obsessing about a "diet" and remember that I need to break old patterns and internalize healthier ones by practicing them until they become familiar and comfortable.
This is the only sane way to get on the road to better emotional and physical health and subsequently to a thinner body. I know because I lost 80 pounds and this way of thinking is the only way I can keep it off and stay healthy.

This books explains a very complex issue in a very simple way which exposes the underlying misconceptions regarding weight loss. The result is an arsenol of equipment to make and sustain permanant changes. A paragraph in chapter 3 called "You Are Your Habits" explains so clearly that the reason it is so hard to stay on a diet is because we are so programmed to do things the way we've always done them. This is the beauty of habits - they are great when we've learned things the right way. But when our habits are working towards our detriment, understanding the self protecting process can help us endure the discomfort that is neccessary to create new habits. Dr. Bryan refers often to the bestselling book "Inner Tennis" by Timothy Gallwey, as his view of mastering tennis helped her to change her view of dieting from one of self-effort to self-actualization. I loved this book, and believe it will help me to maintain my 125 lb. weight loss because it has changed me from the inside out.

I worked indirectly for Bryan. He was in charge of the Financial Advisors in the region I worked .I was a dual employee of a bank as well as brokerage. He held a monthly meeting for all the Advisors and Licensed Financial Sales Consultants .He made all his meeting very interesting and productive. I always took away a valuable lesson from these sessions. He is a powerful public speaker and always delivered tips and points that made me an excellent sales person. Because of Bryan I am now working for the largest mutual fund company in the Nation. I highly recommend reading his book.

An easy to read style which gives hands on and practical advice everyone in sales (regardless of your industry ) should read. It is Head and Shoulders above the other sales books in which I have read. Mr. Mitchell's approach to planning and executing sales strategies are simple but brilliant! Top Producer will give you the edge necessary to increase sales performance. I myself have 17 years of sales experience behind me and feel that Top Producer has given me insight into what I have been missing all these years!

It's high time Bryan shared his ideas. I have 17+ years in sales experience as a financial consultant, and for a brief while, worked under Mr. Mitchell as my sales manager. I felt at the time that his sales meetings stood apart from those of other managers. Rather then just berate the staff about "increased production" Bryan brought useful, pragmatic material to his meetings to increase our sales. These came in the form of fresh ideas, or new spins on old sales techniques. His suggestions are interesting and useful. I integrated several of his ideas into practice and had a very successful career. One point Bryan made that I found to be true is that many sales professionals have no plan, and "any plan is better then no plan at all". Bryan takes this a step further by outlining a specific plan that anyone can use sprinkled with interesting, practical ideas. Furthermore, Bryan is not just driven by revenue, a mistake many managers make, he was the only sales manager I had ( and I had many) that openly spoke of, and concerned himself with "the good of the shareholders", a sentiment rarely heard in an era of upper management corruption these days. I encourage anyone in sales, or interested in a sales career to read this book.

This book is practical, helping people understand how exciting and relevant Biblical prophecy is. Using modern technology, the author shows how to combine the prophecies of the Bible with recorded history in a literal way to show how accurate God's message is to us, increasing our faith in the fulfillment of all God's prophecies--past, present, and future. Jesus said no one would know the exact time of his return but the Father, but he said we are to watch for the signs. This book is very timely because it helps the reader recognize the many signs pointing to Christ's soon return.

A superb and well-organized book for in-depth study about what the Bible says (and doesn't say) regarding revelations. This is not just another scary-things-are-about-to-happen book. It documents not only future events prophesied in the Bible, but the multitude of Old Testament prophecies which God has given and faithfully fulfilled through the ages. Though chock-full of information, it's very readable and encouraging.

"The Truth About Prophecy in the Bible" does a great job of describing what the Bible - both Old and New Testaments - have to say about the end times. This book shows how the Bible has already fulfilled prophecy, specific examples of events taking place today that fulfill prophecy and exactly how the 7-year Tribulation will unfold. Bryan Mistele writes about this difficult subject in such a clear and straightforward manner - it was refreshing. And, because it was written without an overly theological approach, I have even been able to use his book for witnessing. For anyone who has read the Left Behind series and wants a clear picture of what the Bible says about the end times - definitely read this book!

My brother gave me this book shortly after my family and I visited the Tuscarora Reservation in New York this summer. Our great-great grandmother was a Tuscarora, although her family settled in Pennsylvania and never continued the journey to New York. I thoroughly enjoyed this book! It helped me to understand what I saw and learned from talking with Chief Leo Henry and, also, with Preston Chuy in Smokin'Joe's Smoke Shop. I have a new appreciation of the Native American branch of my family! Thanks so much!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. There many nuggets of interesting current and historical facts and descriptions. My favorite thing about the book is all of the pictures. It seems like the entire community contributed something. It must have been a monumental task collecting the pictures that span many generations of Tuscarora. Thank you to the authors for doing this - Excellent!

A couple of years ago, after moving to Las Vegas,NEW MEXICO, our local bookstore proprietor suggested I read Howard Bryan's book regarding some of the more violent pieces of local history. I read with interest and disdain how it was that the US Army under General Kearney's command wiped out the village of Los Valles near here and nearly destroyed the Taos Pueblo, "leaving a few houses standing to shelter the women and children." That was in 1847 during the period of "pacification" after the US had defeated Mexico.

As appaling the events at Los Valles and Taos Pueblo were, at least there was a modicum of human decency in US Military Policy. There was a certain respect for the humanity of the native peoples, a desire to provide some protection for the women and children. All that changed in the next 20 years or so as witnessed at Wounded Knee where women and children were slaughtered by the US Army.

We have a beautiful public square known as the Plaza here in "The Meadow City." Bryan discusses the historical fact that public hangings were a frequent event of some degree of entertainment. The executions took place from a windmill in the center of the Plaza. Today a bandstand sits where the windmill executions once occured. As Bryan points out the hangings stopped when one day Las Vegans came to the realization that the executions were having detrimental effects upon the younger generation: children had taken to playing at hangings! What better rationale can we find in modern times to end our current versions of capital punishment?

This is a must read especially for those fascinated with the history of the American West.

I'm a native of this town (born there in 1923) and found Howard Bryan's book an outstanding and worthwhile account. I've recounted some of his tales to people in other states and countries, and encountered disbelief. It sounds too much like a B movie to be credible, but it's all true. In fact, it's understated.

My father had one of the original posters which is reproduced on the back of the jacket, and I can testify it is authentic.

Most people find it hard to believe such a tough town could stay that way for as long as Las Vegas NEW MEXICO did. The original Las Vegas was established a hundred years before Bugsy Seigal the mobster started his air-conditioned, neon-lit palace for city dudes, hundreds of miles away, in the Nevada desert.

The photographs are also historical artifacts of great value.
I recommend the book with great enthusiasm.

This is a very easy reading book, with some of the most compelling short stories (true short stories) of the Las Vegas, New Mexico area, during the 1800 and very early 1900s. You pick up some amazing historical facts... and hear some tales of famous, or infamous characters that simply amaze!

Low cost, easy to read, and gives you several of those "Oh my ...." moments when you least expect them. A great read.Wildest of the Wild West: True Tales of a Frontier Town on the Santa Fe Trail

Agents of Change

I was pretty disappointed when Wildstorm cancelled the Stormwatch series, having stuck by the title from day 1 and absolutely loving what Warren Ellis had done for the book. Had I known what Ellis was planning, I never would have worried.

From the literal ashes of Stormwatch (seriously, he killed roughly 90% of the team) comes the Authority, a new breed of superheroes. The Authority was the antidote to an eternity of superhero titles that either tried to preserve the time-honored status quo or out "extreme" each other. Extreme in this case meant bigger guns, smaller IQs, and copious amounts of T&A. The Authority was about a group of heroes who weren't interested in battling the same old villains for the same old reasons. They set out to change the world, operating outside any government's jurisdiction according to their own precepts and morals. I know that sounds potentially fascist, but the book really comes closest to what you'd get if you had real people - complete with emotional issues, baggage, etc. - with the will and the means to actually act on their beliefs and change things for the better.

The Authority's introduction marked a turning point in the industry. This book slammed the brakes on a decade's worth of dumber and meaner and turned the industry towards smarter stories, sharper dialogue, realistic characters, and a higher overall quality standard. That may seem hard to believe given the abundance of great titles released in recent years (All Star Superman, Squadron Supreme/Supreme Power, Daredevil, New X-Men, and the entire Ultimate Marvel line come to mind), but the Authority really seemed to kickstart the whole process. And yes I'm aware that the Vertigo titles had been doing that kind of thing for years, but let's face it, those books were too damned weird for most comics fans in the first place.

I think some of this book's significance is overshadowed by the breakneck pace of the first dozen issues. With the team fighting state-sponsored super-terrorism, invaders from a parallel earth, and what can only be described as God, you don't quite see just how subversive the book was. Mark Millar gets a lot of credit for that on his Authority run, but Warren Ellis was the one who carefully laid that foundation. Re-read his Stormwatch run and the Authority issues collected here and you can see that he was definitely a man with a plan. It's like he was softening all of us up so Millar could come in and kick our collective teeth in. Of course, I think anyone would be receptive to Ellis's message after being so thoroughly dazzled by Bryan Hitch's artwork on this title. Hitch, along with inker Paul Neary and colorist Laura DePuy unleashed powerful cinematic illustrations worthy of the latest blockbuster movie.

It should be obvious by now that I absolutely love this book. I think it's one of the high water marks in the comics industry, and one every serious reader of superhero comics (yes, I know how that sounds) should own.

If you can manage to track down a copy, the Absolute Authority hardcover, which collects the Authority #1-12, is the very best way to experience this groundbreaking series. Not only is the sturdier hardcover format better for preserving the book for the inevitable repeat readings, but the larger page size (roughly 33% larger than the standard comic page) is the perfect format for appreciating Hitch's gorgeous cinematic artwork. It's almost like you could fall right into the pages.

PS - Given the success of these Absolute editions, shouldn't we be seeing an Absolute Stormwatch or two at some point? The Authority is really just the second half of the story.

Absolutely Amazing

This 1999 collection consists of issues #1-#12 of the Authority made up of the three initial storylines, The Circle, Shiftships, Outer Dark that introduces this unique and innovative superhero concept to readers.

"The Circle" is the introduction to the team of superheroes up against an old foe in the Wildstorm universe who sets his country of Gamorra against the rest of the world. "Shiftships" bring the team up against an invading alternate dimension. And "Outer Dark" is the climax of the first three stories that changes the team and sets up the next half in Volume 2.

The Authority is made up of characters that are an homage to your traditional comic superheroes. There's Apollo, "The Sun God" with Superman-like powers. The Midnighter, "Night's Bringer of War", a fighter who has had enhancement made on his body to make him like the ultimate Batman warrior. The Engineer, "The Maker" whose liquid metal technology lets her make her body into anything. The Doctor, "The Shaman" in touch with the world who can bend reality to his liking. Jack Hawksmoor, "The God of Cities" controls and communicates with cities. Swift, "The Winged Huntress" an angel-like bird of prey. And enigmatic Jenny Sparks, "The Spirit of the 20th Century".

The stories are written by Warren Ellis of Transmetropolitan, Planetary, Global Frequency, and currently Ultimate Fantastic Four fame. His stories are amazing from their grand opening to issues and eye-popping cliffhangers and the unique spin he takes on superheroes as those who do not fight a weekly badguy, but those that try to make a difference and change the world.

Penciller Bryan Hitch first caught my eye in the Ultimates and through his run on the Justice League. What he brings to the work is beautifully portrayed art that makes his pencilling almost paintlike. The movements and expressions of his characters are near life-like and his action scenes seem like something plucked out of a blockbuster movie.

The "special features" that come at the end of this edition is a set of script pages from the first storyarc.

This is definitely a comic that is a must have on any collector's bookshelf. It's hard to find a copy, but if you do get your hands on one, don't hesitate to take it home.

Opposing our world of status quo and compromise, Active Pursuit of God strikes at our hearts. It challenges us, to pick up our cross and follow hard after Jesus Christ. With his no excuses challenge for us to be Christ-like ambassadors here on earth, Bryan Blaskowsky hits at our core over and over again with words of guidance, direction and encouragement to stay the course as soldiers bound together as the army and body of Christ; representing Jesus the Messiah in an age where the battle lines between light and darkness are continually being tested and relationships are being solidified. His words will call you to choice again and again as the politically correct, feel good / do good religions of the day are left wanting in the light of genuine relationship with Jesus Christ - of which there is no substitute. His words will beckon you to rid yourself of such mediocrity and embrace the Light and Fire of God found in relationship with the Almighty. Active Pursuit of God is a must read for anyone longing to step out of the common place and into the holy place.

This book is a great book because it encases all the true purities of a book written by the person it's about from what I found it contained no historical inacuracies and listed the key players on his staff during his command as COMSPAC,3rd U.S. Pacfic Fleet. Its very humble in his writings which I believe reflects his pesonality for instance he discredits this newsman by giving him the Bull nickname and said that wrong with letting damn slip out here and there and an ocansional Oh sht he once said "I don't trust a fighting man who doesn't drink and smoke" ,but that right there is the Halsey personality which can't be changed or fixed fro the modern world which my opion is the pits .
