This story portrays the relationship between Natives and English people, and that is what makes it so interesting. This story is beautifully written, and I'd love to read it over and over.

I read this book years ago and found it unspeakably sad and haunting. I remember it as if I read it yesterday. An uncommon and insightful view of a white boy and the last of a group of native people that is treated with beautiful sensitivity. Recommended hightly.

This is another awesome book put out by Tokyo Pop! The panels are open and clear so you don't have to go over the book trying to figure out the story, though the characters sometimes use words in another language and it's annoying going back and forth to the Dictionary in the back but that doesn't take away from the great work of Toshihiro Ono, Aya Yoshinaga and the original story writer Hiroyuki Morioka!

I just got this manga, and I must say, I really loved it. I am a huge fan of the anime and I found this to be a must-have companion. The only drawback is that Banner of the Stars won't be released until August 3. Oh well.

Help for Spiritual Warfare
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2006-03-05
The Puritans were seasoned warriors when it came to spiritual warfare. Their emminence in spiritual matters can be seen in part through their writings themselves and by the ongoing influence that their published writings continue to have to this day.
'The Embattled Christian' deals with the spiritual warfare that is common to all followers of Jesus Christ. The author refers primarily to William Gurnalls classic(on spiritual warfare)'The Christian In Complete Armour',but he also draws from the writings of John Owen,Thomas Manton,Thomas Watson and Richard Baxter among others.
The book can be especially valuable to those who may find the Puritans difficult to read. It is an excellent introduction to what the Puritans have written on the subject of Spiritual Warfare.
To understand the great battle that exists for every believer ,there must be a fundamental understanding of the enemies that the Christian must overcome. The greatest enemy of the Christian is the battle with their own inward corruption. Even when someone becomes a believer, they will still stuggle daily with this principle of evil(within them)until the day they die. Mr.Zacharias writes on p.54"The Puritans understand evil as lying at the heart of each human person,a fundamental warping of motivation, desire, and choice that turns the heart away from its true source and end,God,and directs it unto itself and the creation."
One of the strengths of the Puritans view of Spiritual Warfare, which Zacharias deals with in Chap.3 is the vulnerability and weakness of believers. The devil knows how weak and vulnerable Christians are,but some if not many believers are often ignorant of how weak and vulnerable they often are.
'The Embattled Christian'will be of great help in making Christians aware of how weak they are in themselves, how much they need to depend upon the Lord to fight, and what weapons the Lord has provided for them to overcome the World, the flesh and the Devil.

Uniquely well-presented, rich and concise summary

If you value the theology and wisdom and inspiration and experience and history of the Puritans this is a book you will want to own. It is only 119 short pages, yet it manages to summarize the entire picture of what the Puritans thought about and practiced and wrote on the subject of spiritual warfare. It also goes beyond that even with very skillful and informative and well-written short chapters on such subjects as prayer and the Puritan view of regeneration. This is simply a great little book. If you are familiar with William Gurnall's famous work the Christian In Complete Armour but have never read it (a mammoth work) this book will not only summarize its contents for you but inspire you anew to go to it for more. Zacharias also manages to include numerous quotes from works on spiritual warfare by other Puritans (more difficult to find than Gurnall). Because this book was originally the author's thesis for his master's degree (he studied under J. I. Packer who has himself written a classic work on the Puritans titled In Quest of Godliness) it reads like a book that has had alot of research put into it, and alot of thought about its content; in other words not just another quickly written title on Christian subject X for a new bookselling season. Highly, highly recommended.

Should We Take Spiritual Warfare Seriously?

Is spiritual warfare something we should be concerned about? Bryan Zacharias takes you on a tour of what the Puritans, particularly William Gurnall, thought about the subject. Their Biblical approach concluded that spiritual warfare is indeed a serious subject with which all Christians should be familiar. This book is a good place to begin a sober study of spiritual warfare, which can be a matter of spiritual life and death.

This is a rare book that actually deserves 5 stars.

Most books in this genre (including some in this series) are too superficial to be of any help but Bridges does a great job of filling each page of this little book with helpful, practical hints.

There isn't much in the way of recipes or cooking specifics, but that isn't the idea here. Spend $12 on this and $12 on a cook book and you will be set.

In conclusion, the two best things I can say for this are: 1. I have not had to call my mom for any entertaining, non-cooking questions since I got this book. 2. My wife has looked things up in this book.

A Gentleman Entertains by John Bridges

"A Gentleman Entertains" takes a surprisingly unpretentious look at men entertaining, though the book is by no means without merit for women readers. The practical advice and simple, elegant recipes cover a broad range of entertaining scenarios, from casual cocktail parties at home to dining out, to family reunions. The South is perhaps the only place left where it is still fashionable to be genteel, and Bridges lives up to his Southern upbringing without coming across stuffy. Leaving no stone unturned, the book touches on everything from tipping to starting a charcoal grill to choosing the wine. Though the title suggests a certain level of sophistication, the author is just as quick to advise readers to use paper plates when the situation dictates as he is to recommend the proper way to garnish a cocktail. Bridges writing style is crisp and on the wry side, though he had more room to shine in "Keeping Up," a delightful series of essays on his upbringing in Slapout, Al., as well as witty observations on life and martinis. I would have liked to have seen him cut loose in this book a little more stylistically, but being the proper gentleman that he is, he wrote a respectable book suitable for any coffee table. It is a fine follow up to his previous outing, "How to be a Gentleman." I recommend it to anyone who is looking for the kind of practical advice on entertaining that bears repeating and never goes out of style.

This little book is perhaps the best guide to personal note and letter writing available, which is surprising given the number and size of other books that purport to do the same thing but fall horribly short.

The author offers insight about the hows, whens, whys and whats of gentleman's correspondence, clearly and succinctly. Especially helpful are the "A Gentleman Does Not Write" sections.

This is a valuable tool and worth much more than its asking price. Highly recommended!

Score one for civilization

Some of the polite arts that become trumped by technology on a functional level nevertheless preserve their potency as communicative acts. Such is the handwritten note in the age of email, voicemail, and Instant Messaging.

Rarely is so much practical wisdom found in such a diminutive book. A GENTLEMAN PENS A NOTE is chock full of the kind of all too rare courtesy that sets its practitioner part and contributes to a kinder, gentler world. Although the topic is how to pen that appropriate brief note for almost any occasion, the respect for the other that this work embodies has application to many other facets of life together. That very respect is the core of what we honor--or neglect--as civilized life.

Every time I read a new volume in the 'Gentlemanners' series, I feel that *this* one is surely the best. WIth the equanimity of hindsight, each one makes a genuine contribution to what is in fact a superb series on how to make someone else's life just a little bit easier.

This book does exactly what it says - it provides a concise, contemporary guide to personal correspondence for men. I read it in one sitting, and the insight I gained was well worth the price paid. Bridges and Curtis share about when to send a note, what to write, what stationery to use, and even how to deal with poor, illegible handwriting.

Men often don't have the habit of writing notes. Cultivating the practice makes a world of difference in both professional and personal life. Give it a try!

I have used the Harbrace College Handbook for 31 years. My first was the 5th Edition, which I keep on the top in one of my desk drawers. I used it throughout college. I bought this edition for my father, who gave me the first one, and seems to have lost his own copy (he's 86!). This edition is much thicker than the 5th one -- these books are not exactly "reading material," but a reference guide; so I haven't read it from cover to cover. This book comes with a computer CD to install the entire book on your computer.

I have been using it for years, also - and when I lose it, I feel as though I've lost my right arm! (Oh, OK, well maybe as though I've lost my purse or something!) In fact, this paragraph is probably filled with grammatical and style errors because I can't find my Harcourt Brace (that's what it used to be called)! :- )

Observing the closed book, one is captured by the clean and clear-cut designs in shades of black, white and gray on the cover. Upon opening it one sees a repetition of color in the illustrations that are depicted in black and white block prints.

The way in which the story poems are displayed invites one to read because the lines are usually short and a certain rhythm can be felt. The messages are very clear if you understand the dialect and if you have read the explanations be the author. This is very important. To neglect these interpretations will defeat much of the joy to be obtained from the reading. I enjoyed the special language immensly.

It is wise to follow the designated age/grade levels for the best use of the material. Here is an example: I gave copies of 'How God Fix Jonah" to two families that include grandnieces and nephews. One little five-year-old, who is an accomplished reader for her age, opened the book immediately and tried it out. In a little while she came over to me with the book in her hands. I asked her what she thought about it. She answered, "It sounds a little strange." I tried to explain that this is the way some foreign people talk before they know how to speak English very well. I suggested that she have her parents read it to her. On the other hand, an eleven-year-old has kept it on her nightstand ever since she received it eight months ago.

There is a great advantage in having this group of stories compiled and kudos are in order for the author's daughter and the publisher for their collaboration in bringing this work to fruition.

If you love words, their meanings, their sounds, and unexpected usage this book calls out to you. It is filled with Bible stories that are written according to the way that a young African lad would sound telling the stories in a mixture of his own language combined with the new language he is just learning, English. Read silently, you will discover immediately that it is pleading to be read aloud. Read it to children or adults, or a mixture thereof. When I discovered this unique book I had great success reading it to a large group of men, women, and children. They were entranced, mesmerized as they listened attentively. The applause at the end of my sharing was tremendous! Discover, too, individual stories in this book which were originally published as picture books. You will find so many uses for all of these books if only you will read one aloud -- just once!

I really enjoyed reading this book. I felt like it presented a positive view of living with Down Syndrome. I read it to children too in order to educate them on what it is like to have Down Syndrome and how they are very much like them. It is good to get the perspective directly from the individuals involved. I think the authors did a great job of presenting the material and the pictures were great.I would also be a good book for a school library.

Review Date: 2007-06-14
Bryan Lambke has grown up knowing he was different. He doesn't feel different, but the people around him tell him that he is. Bryan was born with Down syndrome.

Throughout the book written by Lambke, with the help of his father, he explains what Down Syndrome is and his feelings about growing up with this disability. Lambke states, "Down Syndrome is having an extra chromosome. It makes me look different than others. I don't feel different. I just am."

The book is prefaced by an interview with Cheryl Rogers-Barnett, daughter of Roy Rogers and Dale Evans. Cheryl's sister, Robin Elizabeth, was diagnosed with Down Syndrome as a baby. Robin Elizabeth lived less than two years, but her birth and life deeply affected Cheryl and she has never been forgotten. Dale Evans wrote a book about Robin's life titled Angel Unaware.

I Just Am is a poignant look into the life of someone living with Down syndrome. Throughout the book you can sense Lambke's confusion and frustration at being treated differently. Yet despite the obstacles, he is now twenty-three years old, works two jobs and has met two mayors and a governor as well as numerous celebrities. Readers will come away knowing more about Down syndrome as well as what day-to-day life is like for someone like Lambke.

Bryan Davis has written a treasure. Although it is pregnant with real life examples of what to do to become a better father, it goes beyond simple nuts and bolts. It contains precious principles that, if taken in, will change the way you father your children, the way you relate to your wife, and the way you relate to your heavenly father. This book is not a book to fly through. You have to take your time to really grasp the essence of what he is imparting. You (and your family) will be blessed if you do.

Private Sneden, a survivor of the Civil War was long forgotten when this was published recently. What is so vital about this book is that it is untouched by politicians, generals, and other propogandists of that era. Furthermore it is done through the viewpoint of the artists eyes, and done by his hand - without the editorial expections of the time.

It is so refreshing to see this long studied subject being given a fresh viewpoint from someone who was actually there.

Recommeded for any serious student of the Civil War.

The Virginia Historical Society unearthed a treasure trove of photos by Union photographer Robert Knox Sneden: this shares his handwritten memoir and a sampling of his storehouse of nearly 1,000 watercolors, sketches and engravings about the war. An outstanding example of military art.
