I realy liked this book. The author has spend a lot of effort reserching and producing an original work that argues well that these ships deserve more credit than they get.

Very slim but well work the read.

A Cut Above the Rest in New Vanguard

Review Date: 2006-09-26
Naval aficionado Lawrence Burr has done something fairly unusual in an Osprey New Vanguard volume - he has introduced an original thesis and used the slim 48-page format to defend it, as well as to describe the actual subject in some detail. There is nothing stale or rehashed in this volume, but rather, a fresh look at a well-known story. Burr begins by stating that the standard view of British battlecruisers - that they were a flawed design and dangerously underarmored - is incorrect. Instead, Burr writes that, "British battlecruisers were a highly successful class of warship" and proceeds to defend his thesis with great vigor. Furthermore, the author's narrative on the Battle of Jutland provides fresh insight on that much-debated battle, which should also give the reader pause to consider the battlecruiser's role in that action.

There is some similarity between this volume and the earlier NV volume by Angus Konstam on "British Battlecruisers 1939-45," but the overall approach in this volume is far more analysis-based than the previous title. The author spends about a dozen pages discussing the development of the battlecruiser concept under Admiral Fisher in 1904, which the author describes as the marriage of speed, firepower and global communications to produce a weapons system that could be wielded to defend Britain's far-flung interests. However, the execution of Fisher's concept was under undermined when a new First Sea Lord, Admiral Wilson, was appointed in 1910 and he began to tinker with the armament of the battlecruisers. The author notes that Wilson imposed an inferior fire control system upon all but one of the battlecruisers (HMS Queen Mary) and rejected development of improved armor-piercing shells. These two mistakes would cost the battlecruisers dearly at the Battle of Jutland in 1916 and sully their reputation. The color plates in this volume by Tony Bryan are excellent and include the normal plan and side views, as well as a view of the underwater wreck of HMS Invincible.

The middle of the volume then has a brief description of each class of battlecruiser, along with its basic data, but there is somewhat less technical detail than in Konstam's earlier volume. Given the space limitations, the author could not squeeze everything in and this is where he decided to skimp. The section on battlecruisers at war is rather detailed for such a small volume and begins with the action at the Heligoland Bight (he does omit the role of British battlecruisers in the pursuit of the German battlecruiser Goeben in 1914, which might have impacted on his thesis), the Battle of the Falklands, Dogger Bank and the Dardnelles bombardment. He then devotes seven pages to Jutland and describes the battlecruiser's role in detail. The section on Jutland best supports the author's thesis that it was ineffective gunnery rather than weak armor that lead to the loss of three British battlecruisers at Jutland. The author, who was involved in recent underwater expeditions to the wrecks of Jutland, then uses modern underwater evaluations of the wreck to further support his thesis that sloppy ammunition handling procedures in the turrets of the British battlecruisers was more responsible for their loss than inadequate armor plate. Certainly the author does an admirable job expounding his thesis and he is fairly convincing, although he omits to mention that there are still some details that don't fit into his hypothesis. For example, the British supposedly rectified the deficiencies noted in their battlecruisers at Jutland, but then 25 years later HMS Hood - not much different from a WW1 battlecruiser - sank after an explosion not unlike what happened to the three lost battlecruisers at Jutland. So maybe inadequate armor was a factor after all. In any event, this volume is well-worth having for its thought-provoking analysis, excellent color plates and incisive battle analysis.

Although this it is a small book, it is well researched. The illustrations are first rate. It is loaded with details and provides the best explanation of why the battlecruisers blew up so easily at the Battle of Jutland.

Quick refreshing read

This is a refreshing change; albeit in a very small volume (hence the 4 rather than 5 start Review). Rather than regurgitate the hackneyed "Battlecruisers were a flawed concept" the author puts forward a rather different angle - that of a successful concept ahead of its time (and probably technology). A concept that was brought into disrepute by the loses incurred through poor strategy and incorrect cordite handling procedures. Its a pity that the companion Volume (British Battlecruisers 1939-45) however Does not follow in this vain- instead it takes the traditional approach to the subject and absolutely contradicts statements made in this volume. It I a pity tat the authors on these two volumes did not collaborate to provide a consistent theme to this story. Of the two I recommend this one because of the difference in view-The second volume adds nothing new to the subject

I love Bryan. He's such a great teacher who "keeps it real." I am a yoga teacher, who lives in the NY metro area and I rely on Bryan's cd's to practice by. Whenever he's in town from Santa Monica, CA, i make sure to practice with him "live;" however, practicing with this cd at home will kick your butt, make you laugh, make you cry and make you strong and limber. Namaste Bryan.

This bootleg is very challenging. Having committed myself to the kest system of power yoga over the past two years, I have evolved in my ability to breath deep, not react, and enjoy the sweet struggle that bryan's philosophy focuses on.

I noticed that in this CD, Kest's most recent, his philosophy has evolved a little as well. Focusing on keeping attentive to what we are doing and not fidgeting. Giving in to the pose and feeling all of the places it is touching. About an hour and a half of very strong upper and lower body poses. This cd is advanced both physically and mentally. In the final 15 minutes of this practice, bryan leads you through a very simple meditation focused soley on gratitude. Very powerful stuff!

I highly recommend this cd to anyone looking to challenge themselves physically and mentally, while focusing on being present, not competing and gratitude.

As a side note, the most powerful aspect of Bryan's entire philosophy is how insistent he is about getting out of your ego. In this american culture of materialism, traffic jams and competition, we all have the tendency to get caught up in the rat race and become unconcious. No matter which work out you do, with bryan, you have an opportunity for one hour or whatever to get outside of that, focus on being present, being who you are and where you're at and being ok with it...

I love it, but it's tough!

I love every minute of this CD set, and I hope that Bryan Kest puts out more. The spiral-bound book is of great quality, as are the recordings. It's a tough practice, and certainly not for beginners. I've stated in other reviews, that even though he's a little bit coarse in the way he talks, it doesn't bother me in the least, and I find him very motivating. I like this practice in addition to going to the studio to practice, but it does take a lot of time. I think overall its nearly 2 hours! Well worth your money!!

I love Bryan Kest! I have been working out to his videos since 1997. I was very fortunate to try his videos first and fall in love with his style of yoga and teaching! Just as I was looking for more, he started releasing cd's of his classes in Santa Monica CA. I was in heaven. First of all, if youre familiar with his Energize, Tone, and Sweat series, which are his original work, this is not that type of class. Those videos are vinyasa style. This cd does not feel very vinyasa to me. Dont get me wrong, its TOUGH! But it doesnt feel like his other classes. That last sentence may only make sense if youre already familiar with Bryans way of teaching.

This cd is not for beginners! Its strenuous and long! (2 hours!) But its a great addition to an already existing routine. I like to do one of Bryans early videos and then maybe a little cardio. You'll be too tired for that here. But this workout is all you'll need!

Another welcomed change is Bryans attitude about the body. In his early videos it was more about the poses. Now he takes the time to stress the importance of health. I, too, am less concerned with six pack abs. I want my whole body to feel good.

One of the things people complain about most is Bryans talking. I've always said that this man has a lot to say and actually cares about people. Listen to him, you'll learn a lot!

As I said earlier, only buy this cd if you already pratice yoga 3-4 times a week already. Otherwise, you're just going to burn out. This isnt the type of cd you can do daily. And thats no way to start yoga.

If you are looking for a book that is broken down into plain English, is very readable, and is organized in a logical way...you've found it! For someone taking a basic level economics course, I can't recommend a better book. Everything is explained in language that is easy to read and understand. The text is organized in a logical, flowing manner, to include side notes and other helpful bits of information. Also, this book relates the information it is presenting to "real life", making it easier to visualize how economics affects our daily lives. I HIGHLY recommend this book!

"And you're like the old couple, you love me even when I'm bad." I think it is a great story that kids like this can relate to and help them to understand more why they feel what they feel and why they do what they do.

A newfangled, wrangler Cinderella? You bet your boots! Cowboy boots, that is.

Joe Cindersý three lazy stepbrothers, Butch, Buck and Bart Bronco, spend their days counting buzzards in the sky while poor Joe, an orphan, does all the chores. When pretty Miss Rosalinda invites them to a fall fiesta at her ranch, the three brothers decide to go.

That night, as raggedy Joe is out watching the herd, a man with ýbaggy old overalls, a wool serape, and a crooked stick in his handý appears out of the darkness amid ýsparks swirling like dust devils.ý He provides Joe with some fancy new duds, a four-wheeled ýbroncoý and instructions to leave when the midnight fireworks begin. And, well, we all know the restý (Substitute red cowboy boot for glass slipper.)

This bookýs charm lies in the authorýs clever use of Westernisms and its light-hearted illustrations.

The Leaf that was Left is both a picturebook and a thoughtful parable for parents to share with their children. Young Louella knows the love of her family, her friends, and her pet cat, and she owns many nice toys and things; yet she can't help feeling that something is missing in her life. She doesn't know what it is. Is it possible to be very lucky, and loved, and still be missing something? While Louella is still trying to figure out the riddle, she ventures out into the snow with her parents and sees the very last leaf of the season outlined in beautiful frost. Her dad offers to pluck the last leaf and give it to her, and she considers the leaf as a gift, with the private knowledge that she would be the very last person to see it on the tree. But she realizes there is greater value and satisfaction in leaving the last leaf there, so others can appreciate its beauty. Featuring truly beautiful color paintings, The Leaf that was Left is a humble, enthusiastically recommended story especially for parents who are trying to help their children understand that there is more to life than having and collecting things, despite constant pressure from advertising in a consumption-oriented society.
