The first half of this book is a model-theoretic introduction to logic for beginning graduate students. It takes an unusual approach in that it emphasizes back-and-forth construction rather than formula satisfaction. The second half is a treatment of stability theory (ca. 1970s) meant for professionals. His style is entertaining, but he often gets to the point in a long and roundabout way. Important points are embedded in the text rather than isolated as definitions and lemmas. Just a couple of the early chapters have exercises and not very many. With the idiosyncratic style, dated approach, and nonstandard coverage, I wouldn't try using this as a main text.

good establishment book

This is a nice, clear and rather complete book. Coming from the "patent establishment", it obviously does not address very well the enormous abuses of the patent system, nor the easy and superficial way in which many patents (evergreening or not) are granted.

A mixed bag

This book is light enough to be read in one sitting. And, given how important Facelets is to JSF development, is a worthwhile read for any JSF developer. (Note that this book is focused primarily on Facelets - and by extension takes familiarity with JSF for granted.)

The upsides?
I found very broad coverage of everything that Facelets provides. Whether its templating support, the jsfc attribute, the EL, extending Facelets with custom tags, etc. ... its all in here.

The downsides?
Trying to cover so much ground in 80 pages is a losing proposition. As a result, some topics are covered in detail, whereas others seem to be included just for completeness sake.

The difference in writing styles between the two authors is noticeable - and some chapters (like the earlier ones) are treated much better than others. I can't imagine why a short book like this one might have merited more than one author.

The high point of this book is in its first chapters - it provides good information on how to setup Facelets (esp. the libraries you will need), and provides a very well presented introduction to its templating support.

However, shortly thereafter you run into the Facelets Tag Reference chapter. For over 15 precious pages, the Facelets documentation is re-packaged with very little value addition.

Bottom line - this book tries to be much more ambitious than its short format will allow it to be. In some places it succeeds, but in most others, it tends to be constrained by a lack of space.

Mostly Standard Images!

Again, I have the same problem with this book of black & white images of male nude models as I did with the other's in the Edition Euros Series. I would like to know more about the photographer, Herve Bodilis, and his work. Again, there is no biography of the photographer. That aside, these are standard images of guys alone, some nude, and a few very erotic images of guys together. These are not all pretty guys, and perfect models, but everyday real men. I enjoyed this photographer's work, and have added it to my collection. However, if I had only one or two of the Euros Series books to select & buy, this wouldn't be it.

Fanciful, sometimes invented dialogues

The author, although his focus is not on presenting absolute truth, is renowned for his ability to evoke the atmosphere surrounding the musical greats. This is one in a series of impressionistic images he has written or produced. (He creates film documentaries that are not strictly accurate either). He can project to the reader a real feeling that he was there--and, in fact, he did visit with Nadia Boulanger on several occasions prior to writing this book, although he knew her neither extremely well nor extremely long before she died. It is well to bear that in mind while reading this nicely-translated volume. The author took everything Boulanger had to say at face value and did not do any evident reasearch to evaluate when she was being truthful and when she was simply inventing things--as she often did when she did not respect her interviewer and realized that whatever she said would be accepted without question. So, with the caveat that many things Boulanger said were repreated from prior interviews and that some are not objectively true, this book is a good read, particularly for those interested in the Boulanger mystique, which the author has "bought," as they say.

The factory setting adds to the erotic situations, adding a feeling of adventure. The dark background only highlights the shape and form of the well formed male body in many positons. The well defined bodies are a relief from the overly muscled forms in many books. I has a place on my coffee table.

This is about domestic poverty
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2000-04-14
This is a good book that is extremely fair and unprejudiced in presenting the views of people who aren't fair or unprejudiced. Actually, I read this book because I thought it was about Third World poverty (and there is one, called simply "Third World", that is), but nevertheless this book highlights the fact that there is some poverty even in America, a fact most of the essayists acknowledge, and propose various solutions to remedy the problem. Every major opinion is represented, and each is given equal time. The only problem I see here is that many of the essays are a bit outdated (many written during the Depression Era, when domestic poverty was a much worse problem).
