In his first novel, Philosophy professor Fred Abbate has crafted an engaging murder mystery with a unique element. Writing about what he knows, Abbate introduces a main character who is a professor of--you guessed it, Philosophy. Bruno Constantine teaches at Rawlson College, a small liberal arts institution in the Berkshires. Late one night, Bruno is informed that his office-mate, the disagreeable fellow Philosophy instructor Harry Bonner, has been brutally murdered in their shared office. Bruno, who has had some success as an amateur sleuth in the past, is asked to assist the police in their investigation of Harry's murder.

Specifically, the detective in charge of the case asks Bruno to take a look at the cryptic journal which Harry left behind. Harry's journal is full of esoteric references to arcane terms of logic--the actual study of logic, that is, which involves syllogisms, a deductive form of argument (Abbate helpfully expands on this concept in the included appendix). Bruno puts his own liberal arts education to work as he attempts to decipher Harry's acerbic musings in hopes of incriminating Harry's murderer. As he delves further into the mystery, Bruno comes to discover that many people had a motive for Harry's death--but just who is lying and who is telling the truth?

Although Abbate does a nice job of explaining the logic concepts which he incorporates into the story--including the use of excerpts from Bruno's "Introduction to Logic" class, which serve as amusing and interesting interludes--I don't think the average reader is likely to arrive at Bruno's expert conclusions. Still, this is a clever, enjoyable novel which has the potential makings for a series of Bruno Constantine Mystery books.

This book takes on the challenge of discovering the "Good Life" as viewed by six different philosophies: Hedonists, Stoics, Christians, Rationalists, and Existentialists. Through the use of examples and real life scenarios Yezzi is able to compare and contrast each of these areas with the persons historically linked to them. Following each section is a series of problematic scenarios that will aide in the readers understanding.

I love these postcard books put out by Bruno Gmunder. This edition #16 of David Vance's photographs is a must for any collector. It's a great representation of his wonderful photography, and in addition, it's a great way to keep in touch with friends and at the same time brighthen their day with a hot photo of young good-looking men. If you're not able to own the hardcover book this is a great way to still have a chance to enjoy David's photography at a very affordable price. If you're a collector this postcard book is a must, along with the other 15 editions previously published of other photographers.

If you like BEL AMI 's photographs , I recommend you to purchase this postcards-book. In the book, you'll find many cute boys .

But , if you prefer more muscular guys , I suggest you to buy the photo-books of Jeff Palmer , Ed Freeman , Tom Bianchi , etc.

I think the whole series is wonderful-(ie. Word Smart Junior, Reading Smart Junior...etc.) It really helped me learn my vocab and I could remember 10 new words a day! To top that, there was an interesting story to go along with it as to keep my attention. All in all, I thought that this was a really helpful series. :)

I collect books of gay erotic images and I really feel this one is somewhat different. Some of the images are down right bizzare. There is one particular picture of a guy holding a baby that I find somewhat distasteful, but on a whole I liked the book and would reccommend it for people looking for colorful, different types of erotica.

If you've ever wondered why someone would shut themselves up in a small cell with only minimal contact with a group of similarly shut-up men, then read this book. It is a biography of St. Bruno, who founded the Carthusian order of monks in 1084. Of all the religious orders of the Catholic Church, none has changed so little as the Carthusians. This is due to the extreme simplicity of the life they have chosen to lead: most of their time is spent in study or prayer ALONE in their cells, they do some manual labor, and eat a very sparse, meatless diet (many also live into their 90's). The Carthusians are the ultimate in monastic withdrawl from the world (at least in the Christian West), and this is undoubtedly why they are fascinating. This book, a biography of their founder, shows how one might come to freely choose this life. Bruno himself lived and taught in the Cathedral School in Reims, France (or was it Chartes? I don't have the book immediately available). Since he was connected to the Cathedral he worked and lived in the busy midst of medieval town life. Along with some of his friends, he wished for a more solitary life of prayer and scriptural study, and eventually he found this in a small valley where he started his monastery. Carthusians are still there today at La Grande Chartreuse, the motherhouse of about 25 monasteries worldwide (one in the U.S.). I enjoyed this book because of the very human portrait it gave of St. Bruno. After reading this I could better understand what might motivate someone to take up such a hard life. In our age we tend to see such a life as negative inasmuch as it involves denying almost everything we have. The considerations that led St. Bruno to it, however, were positive: he did not seek to give up the world so much as he sought to grab hold of the "pearl of great price," and seek out the Infinite and Ever-Loving God. To this end, Bruno was willing to set aside all else. Only when we see what Bruno was after do the austerities of the monks seem reasonable. In this light Bruno is akin to a modern Olympic athlete who puts everything at the service of his training and sets his sights upon one thing: the Gold. Bruno was no escapist, but this book does prompt the modern reader to ask what it would be like to have one, and only one, priority in life, and to give up everything for it. What would it be to give up our rushed lives, to be "far from the madding crowd" and yet be content? Tolle et lege: take up and read.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the International Workshop on Security Protocols held in Cambridge, UK, in April 1996, in the context of the special program on computer security, cryptology, and coding theory at the Isaac Newton Institute. The 17 revised full papers and one abstract included in the book were carefully selected. Among the topics addressed are several types of public key cryptosystems, digital cash, electronic commerce, digital signatures, and visual cryptography. Besides original theoretical results, the collection of papers show a strong applications-oriented component.
