A thought provoking read

This book is a series of articles by Bruno Leone. The book covers specific topics such as the Barbarians and their forcing of the Roman Empire to fall, Saints and Sinners with a primary focus on Thomas Becket, Emperors and Kings with highlights on Charlemagne, William the Conqueror, King John, and Louis VI and Lous IX. Also covered are the Crusades, and the Jewish influence in Europe. While the book is easy to read as Leone's style lends its self to a quick read, I find some of the research lacking. A few of the resources come from less and full acedemic peer reviewed articles. I think for general reading, and some research projects this book will be very suitable. It is an interesting read, and well worth picking up if you enjoy the middle ages.

"A Welcome Edition"

Anyone who know Howard Roffman's photography knows he has done many wonderful books of Male Nude Photography. This new postcard book #27 featuring Johan Paulik, one of Bel Ami most admired models, is a welcome edition that was issued about the same time as the new hardcover book featuring Johan Paulik by Howard Roffman. There are 29 postcards featuring black & white photos of Johan by himself that are shot mostly indoors. This is a Johan that is a little more mature & older, but still very attractive, cute, and innocent looking. These are wonderful postcards to enjoy yourself, or to send to your friends, etc. Highly Recommended!

fine set of essays

An excellent set of articles on improvisation, with one on the psychology of improv, and articles on Gamelan, Arabic music, jazz, Cantonese opera, Latin dance, Hindustani music, children's games.

Improvisation is not the same everywhere. And there are differences from culture to culture, and performer to performer, in just how much of a performance is improvised. These essays address these and other issues.

This book is great if you like homoerotic artwork. It makes a perfect coffee table book! My only complaint is how short the book is.

I was impressed with the content of this book. I own other legal secreterial books and this is one of the best. Plus having worked in law offices, I feel this book has a realistic slant on the legal professsion. Even though it is an older book, I would recommend it.

In Letter no.89, Bernard writes to his friend, William of St Thierry, "as I drew myself in my letter to you, so I really am.." That sweet admission characterizes this book. An excellent translation that really LISTENS to Bernard's voice in its 560+ pages. A short essential Introduction by Beverly Mayne Kienzle helps guide the reader toward aspects of interest surrounding Bernard in the letters -- events in Cistercian history, admonitions to his monks, letters on the liturgy, etc. -- and discusses the place held by private letters in monastic literature. The translation lets Bernard live, and live he does! The 'oracle of Christendom' shows himself the most human of humanists, passionate and nearly wild, founding seventy monasteries, securing the recognition of Innocent II, creating the Kinghts Templar, and pouring his preaching to kindle the fire for a second crusade. This book's a worthwhile place to start tracking mediaeval history, by tracking a colossus. Spiffy chronology, bibliography, and table of letters, recipients & dates makes the book easy to access for specific results. The last of the Fathers of the Church, Bernard's real light lies just under the pages, and that's tough for a translator; here's a translation that understands and discloses that essence. As welcomed and vital a book as Gilson's 'Mystical Theology of St Bernard.'

Great book about MC Escher
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2006-12-22
Probably the best book written about dutch graphic artist MC Escher (by Bruno Ernst, an admirer of Escher that would become a close friend). Not only the book contains a great deal of graphic material, but there are also details about Escher's life not known elsewhere. The books covers a great deal about his early life, his travels to Italy in the 1920s, his life there, his exile into Switzerland after the fascists imposed uniforms on his children, his return to the Netherlands right before the Second World War. Remarkably, this artist revered by mathematicians for his representations of different types of symmetry and mathematical concepts, knew little math himself. He was a rather introverted artist, who had an ambivalent opinion about his own work.

Bruno Frank takes the reader on an imaginary journey through the life of Miguel Cervantes, a life filled with extreme highs and lows of 15th century Spain. Historically accurate with just the right taste of "perhaps," this novel culminates with Cervantes' creation of Don Quijote, his masterpiece work. The last chapter alone is worth the reading.
