This is just enough of the artwork of Joe Phillips to satisfy. More creative and playful than FOR THE BOYS or THE ADVENTURES OF JOE BOY, this book will be a welcome additon to your library.

A must-own for any collector

Joe Phillips' newest book contains some of the most stunning, inspiring artistic depictions of carefree and fun-loving young men anywhere. Phillips is perhaps best known for his work for Xodus Magazine and Jocko Underwear, but the glossy, full-color air-brushed drawings in this book are pure art. The only criticism for this book is that several of the images have been published previously in calendar form (hence the 4 stars instead of 5). Simultaneously both homoerotic and tasteful, this beautifully bound volume is essential to any serious collector of homoerotica or cartoons/comics.

Nice book but just too short... I didn't even get deep enough into it and it ended...
Edward's drawings are great, that was very nice to look at.

Dear Bruno is an incredibly candid and honest compilation of letters that only one cancer survivor can convey to another. Despite all the medical staff in the world who may pretend to know about tests, procedures, and illness...no one can really understand without walking in their shoes. This book is for all of us who need to remember to appreciate and look forward to the wonderfully trivial things in life, while we have been given this gift called the present.

A brilliant but quaint series of essays on Greek literature.
Helpful Votes: 11 out of 21 total.
Review Date: 1999-04-12
The postmodern reader will judge whether this collection of essays, originally published between 1929 and 1947 in German Classics journals, adequately addresses the horrors of the time during which it was written. The conclusion of one of the later essays: '...there is one respect in which we too must abide by the principle of humanitas...That is the esteem in which we must hold the dignity of man: a modicum of humanitas for which no particular talent is needed. The eternal absolutes which rule over us, especially justice and truth, unhappily often make us forget that the absolute which accedes to our understanding is not entirely absolute after all...[W]hen it is agreed that certain institutions have come to represent the absolute, the catastrophe becomes inevitable. Then is the time to remind oneself that each and every human being has his own share of dignity and of freedom...'

Dated but good general reading on the influence of Greek thought

To paraphrase an observation Whitehead made over and over, something wonderful happened between the 8th and 5th century BCE in Greece. Why the circumstances came together in such a way as to produce what we glibly know as "classical Greece" no one may adequately explain, but Snell's book makes the quest for understanding pleasant reading and interesting (if dated, in places) intellectual fare.

This side of modernity, it is easy to pan this book (written in the war years early in the 20th century) as antiquated modern humanism, and indeed it does tend to go on and on about the "individual" (often in isolation from the community) and the genius of the Greek mind, perhaps ignoring that there were other cultures before and after 5th century Greece. But precisely these throwbacks are the book's greatest strengths, when the context of its writng is taken into consideration. In pre- and wartime-Germany, an unfortunate interpretation of Hegel's dialectical phenomenology allowed an entire intellectual culture a collective amnesia about the worth and power of the individual, in favor of the State as fulfillment of the "outworking of Spirit." For Hegel, this State was Prussia; post-Weimar Germany, however, interpreted it differently. But Snell does not use his book as an anachronistic justification for German superiority as heir to the best of classical Europe, as so many authors of his time certainly did. Rather, he points out that the "discovery" of the individual mind, acting in concert with others and pointed towards "the good" as benevolently seen by Socrates, was the greatest achievement of classical Greece bequeathed not only to Europe but to all the world. That Snell could bring out this aspect of Greek thought, and emphasize it, speaks well of him and the book.

The small volume is great reading for "cultural literacy," since to breathe in the West (now, almost everywhere, culturally) is to breathe air exhaled by Greek writers long ago. There are serious problems with this, no doubt. But coming to terms with Western canon means coming to terms with Greek literature and philosophy. This book helps one do just that.

More than a little disappointed....

I'm usually very impressed by the books that Bruno Gmunder publishes, but this one is the exception. A few of the photos are quite beautiful, but most of them are lacking feeling -- they're just perfect bodies standing there, and often not even well-lit. Where the work of Steven Underhill, Howard Roffman and Jeff Palmer evokes something in me, this book doesn't move me at all. The print quality is also not quite up to par; many of the color pictures look like they were printed on an inkjet printer, because you can see all the little dots that went into making up the image.

Before you buy this one, I'd really recommend browsing through it at your local bookstore to make sure it's what you want. "Artistic nudes" doesn't quite describe it, because they're just plain ol' nudes.

BEAUTY Beyond Compare!

Words can't describe this beautiful new book of male nudes from Ed Freeman. It's a true celebration of the athletic, muscular beauty of the male body. These photos are perfect creations that have been aided by the help of the computer, to present a dramatic view (background, lighting, etc) that is truly an art form in itself. These models are very beautiful, handsome muscular men, (no full frontal nudes) who are truly at that age of body perfection. Many shots are of singular men and there are many couples in erotic embraces.

Ed Freeman was born and raised in New England. His erotic photos and images have been published in many books, magazines, calendars, and posters everywhere. I am so glad that he has finally published his own book. This is one of the best books of male nudes (in both content and appearance) that I have seen in a long time. As a collector of male nude photography books this one is a must for your collection.

Decent work, but not an extensive of his previous efforts
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2008-06-18
Ohm Phanphiroj's first book was a relative breakthrough in photography of the male nude. His technique was imitative of grainy Polaroids (although it was taken digitally), with lush but dark colors. His models were largely no different than most: Tall, rangy, beautiful, coiffed to the limit, affecting a lazy sensuality in down-at-the-mouth settings. "Look, ma! I'm so beautiful, but I'm in this roach-infested motel!"

Nonetheless, Phanphiroj's initial work was interesting because he never employed the "jocks on rocks" style favored by Steven Underhill, Tom Bianchi, Howard Roffman, and others.

"Night Hawks," unfortunately, doesn't quite go beyond his two previous books. His style remains firmly static, his models may well have appeared in the first two books for all that they look alike, and his work seems more derivative of photographers like Michael Huhn ("Peep Show"), Slava Mogutin ("NYC Go-Go") and David "Old Reliable" Hurles ("Speeding") -- except that all these other photographers were doing this type of work years ago.

Phanphiroj has incredible talent, there's no denying that. But as an artist, he's not growing. Not changing. Not seeking out different ways of implementing his vision.

If all the reader were looking for was beautiful, naked Calvin Klein models wearing dingy jeans and lolling around in cheap digs, this book would rate "5 stars." As art, as visionary photography, as something different and grasping and seeking -- not just different from other artists but from Phanphiroj's own prior work -- it is only so-so.

Pictures were fantastic as far as I could see. Was a gift, but had to peruse it a bit of course before I wrapped it up. Was dissapointed that the book came with a crease throughout the corner of the whole book. It was packaged well, so I'm sure it happened prior to shipping. Was cheeper than new, but was still not happy.

awesome books for power electronic design engineer

Review Date: 2008-03-25
I first saw this book in 1997, the second year after the first version of this book, when I was in my master's program in China. I didn't pay much attention to it since my future job will not involve high-power or high-voltage IC design. After I graduated from Univerity of Tenness, I got a job offer from a semiconductor company and became an engineer to design products related to automotive electronics. Then,I bought this book for my job. This book was written by very expericed engineer in ST microelectronics ten years before. I was surprised this book is still very useful today. Part of the contents maybe a little bit out of date, but most of the chapters were still used again and again in modern designs. I wish these authors can rewrite this book and include some new development in both academic and industry. Overall, this is a awesome book for engieers who will start their career in power electronics. I recommend it.

Smart power ICs isn't a conventional DC/DC-converter control cook book. Instead it covers wide range problems/design issues that need to be considered when designing switching converter ICs.

Something a Little Lacking at McDonald Hall

As great as it is to see Bruno and Boots again, and even see the tables turned on them, there was something lacking in this episode. Perhaps it was a stretch for something a little different. Bruno & Boots are confused by a mysterious "Phantom" practical joker, for whose pranks they are being blamed by default. They spend less time spiritedly plotting and planning than usual, however, and more time baffled and bewildered. Likewise, their partners in crime, Cathy & Diane, are confronted with "increased security" at Scrimmage's, and find themselves more frustrated than inspired to ingenuity. They are victims here, and while it is certainly different, it is much less fun. While the gang is all here --- Wilbur, Mark, Sidney & Co. --- even they seem a little tired of the routine. The appearance of Boots' younger brother is promising, but probably not as well developed as it could be. However, a Bruno and Boots volume is not to be missed, and this one is no exception. Elmer's foray into romance is alone worth the time!

I guess one should probably watch the film instead: the idea of a sex craving young stud constantly crossing supernatural horny (male) creatures is funny just as the setting and the characterization.

Unfortunately the drawings are a bit sketchy: something which probably would pass unnoticed in an animated feature but not in a close up examination as it is allowed by a comic book: a comic highlights the sexual content of the single strip over the action and such sexual content is centered on the details of the drawings.

Only for adult readers.

I don't usually go for the "Gay Porn Comic" but after hearing so much about the darn book, and then the hearing people talk about the movie, I finally decided to see what all the talk was about. Well the book is funny to say the least. It positions the character Jonas Morecock in short tales about the unexpected I guess! This book primarily is about Jonas having sex with the other characters in the comic. I found this book to be very amusing, if nothing else.
