I bought this book for my daughter for a school report on Prohibition. I could not put it down. This book is fast-paced and extremely funny. It shows the warmly human side of these happy-go-lucky Italians as they break into the illegal wine business through a series of Sting-like raids on other people's illegal wine .

I loved the incident where they stored a few thousand gallons of red wine in the farm's water tank temporarily. When they returned to the farm, all their friends were having a party. They had hot and cold running wine from the kitchen tap! A gift from God!

You'll be telling people about this book.

One of the most interesting books I've ever read

Someone recommended this book to me, knowing about my interest in the Prohibition. I must say I was a bit disappointed with the quality of the writing. I am not exactly an expert, but I found more than a respectable number of grammatical errors. As far as the plot goes, it was very exciting. I was never bored and I liked the way Buti described the events. He has a skill for imagry if not for spelling. However, it was just a bit jumbled and hard to follow. Perhaps a few more revisions would have really helped improve the quality of the book.

Loved It ! Someone should make a movie out this book . . .

This was a book that had a lot of meaning to me . I was born and raised around where this story takes place , Sonoma county. There have alway been storys about the Napa Valley and none of Sonoma county etc. I like that the Italians are shown in a fun way and not in the Godfatherish way , so much. So maybe people will see that there is another side to the Italians . Not just shot them up all the time. Great story. Can't wilt till the new book Jackass Brandy comes out . Beverly Del Fava

The sequel to Rumbling Wine Barrels has been put to bed and will soon be available. Jackass Brandy continues the saga of bootlegging immigrants during Prohibition in a humorous, if not hillarious, tale depicting the times when an illegal business was used by bootleggers, lawmen, businessmen, prostitutes, and local civilians who tried their luck at making money the easy way. This book will hold your attention to the last page and bring back the times to what the author, Bruno Buti, calls "the Robin Hoods of the Roaring Twenties."

Patrick Fillion's "Hot Chocolate" is a true delight, and quite nasty! The stylized illustrations feature the most beautiful black men, doing the most "wonderful" things together in very erotic ways, if you get my drift!

I would recommend this to anyone who has enjoyed being with black men. This book, in my humble opinion is a MUST HAVE!

This book is good if you are a lover of black men and gaytoons. It is of fine quality paper and nice art work, but would be better if it highlighted work by several artists. I enjoyed the book, but went through it once and probably won't look at it again, unlike other such books I've purchased by Tom of Finland, the Hun, or others.

Internet Family Fun is the kind of book I like to store close to my computer, because my older kids can use it when I'm busy in the other room. The reviews are easy to understand, but not shallow. Plus there's a good variety of sites. Lots of educational (but fun at the same time!)places to visit, which makes it great for parents like me who homeschool.

The artwork is bright and clever. This book will please all ages, and would make a great gift for birthdays, holidays, or whatever.

I now understand why Johan Paulik is one of the most popular models of the Bel Ami line of photos and videos. He has an extremely handsome and athletic body, combined with a sweet, innocent face. Howard Roffman has captured Johan Paulik at his best, alllowing us to glimpse not just the perfection of his body, but also the charm of his personality. This photo-book is one of my favorite examples of Roffman's work, and I highly recommend it to anyone, even (perhaps especially) if they've never heard of Johan Paulik or Bel Ami.

If you're after gratuitous pictures of Johan, go download them with everyone else off the internet. You won't find them here. Oh, you'll find nudity, but only where it seems natural.

Roffman has perfectly capture the essense of Johan, I have never seen so much character and personality emerge from a page before. Johan relaxes before the camera, and you are rewarded with intimate glimpses into his personality. This is Johan at his cheekiest. As you flick through the pages and pause at images of him relaxing with Roffman's two dogs, you feel like just another friend there with him, as you laugh over breakfast or come to wake him in the morning.

This is Johan the man, Johan the boy, Johan the friend and Johan the lover, all in the pages of one book. If you ever saw him in a Bel Ami production and wished you could get to know him, then get this book, because it's as close as you'll get.

Johan's beauty. Roffman's style. A book to drool over!

Many people have seen Johan Paulik in the bel AMi sex-action films, and have lusted after this beautiful and almost real youth. Hoffman has managed to capture all of Johan's appeal in this masterful collection of B&W images. From the outdoor shots to the casual indoor poses, these pictures ooze charm, sex-appeal, and wit.

The comments by Paulik (in the foreword) that he feels that he is not as attractive at 25 as he was at 18 frankly cause wonder. has he looked Roffman's pictures? Can he be so unconfident about his body? Surely, he is more rounded than he was at 18. Who isn't? That being said, his 'rounded' form makes him all the more attainable, as he looks even more like the boy-next-door, even if he is much more beautiful. I for one find him much more erotic and sexy than when he was 18! I showed this book to a friend of mine, a married woman, who looked through the images, paused for breath and then said, "What an outstandingly beautiful man!" That says it all.

A great book.

I loved these photographs of good taste and great photographic quality and technique. Great book for photographers. Nevertheless I never got what the photographer was trying to convey to its reader, me. No cosmology, no philosophy, no point to get across other than: Here are black beautiful males and their bodies and this is how I photograph them. If this was his point, then he succeeded, other than that it left me wondering what the point of the whole undertaking was for.

Mmm Mmm Good!!!

Now this is how you produce and market an art photography book! John Healy grabs your attention 1st w/ the cover of the book that makes you do a double take. That is was what caught my roving eye. In all honesty at the end of the day: YES, "we" more than modestly enjoy a fine-looking specimen. Oh, but John Healy did not stop at just the cover...he went on and on...NO! not monotony, but brilliant works of art. I'd have to say the up close picture of the entire chest and torso is my favorite, and by it being only the torso;I could play w/ my imagination more (I'm still salivating). His book is full of works that are close-up and sooo life-like. I'll tell you that Mr. Healy has "the eye" when picking his handsome models. I could go on...but I gave Mr. Healy's: Black only 4 stars because of the overuse of plastic and I would of LOVED to have seen that "fence corset" shot duplicated on the other page; however, with it taken off showing the imprints left behind. I must say you know how to portray "our" gorgeous Black men. I on the other hand agree w/ the other reviewer, because I am a woman and it was nice to be able to view some of these men w/ out a predisposed motive. More unisexed

An exquisite collection of new black & white photographs from renown British photographer John Healy, this is stirring testimony to both the beauty of the black male nude as well as the incredible power of fine art portraiture. Healy has crafted such potent imagery here that one feels completely lifted from the premise that they are viewing a book and instead feel transported to another stratosphere where light and form and mood command total attention of one's consciousness. The technical refinement of each image is obvious but what really sets this work apart is the masterful way that Healy poses his subjects. They grace each page totally and utterly possessing it.

Had to read this book for class. It was not as bad as some other old Spanish texts from this period. An interesting and often funny look at the simple life of a picaro and the tricks of the trade. The reader follows Lazarillo from his childhood as the son of a thief and his simple struggle to survive and make his life moderately bearable. The author is very critical of his contemporary Spanish society, and especially the church (this book was banned by the Inquisition). Fear not students, this book is worth the read.

When i first started reading Lazarillo de Tormes on my own, i immediately was amazed with how quick the language and style of the novel caught onto me. I am in a Spanish 3 class, and while reading this, it made me wonder why we NEVER read spanish literature like this! We always read very pointless short stories that are poorly written, and just have a poor cheap plot in general. So it was very refreshing to read a real piece of Spanish literature for the first time in my life. I believe Lazarillo will have a special place in my bookshelf just like that of Don Quixote and other famous works of world literature. If you like Huckleberry Finn, and a story that is full of brutality yet wit and satire, this novel will give u that and more! I didn't realize until now that this is one of the first picturesque novels of Spain, and the story itself became a canvas for other contemporary characters and novels that somewhat has similar characeristics to Lazarillo. Any determined intermediate level Spanish student could read this novel just fine, you may have to have your Spanish dictionary beside you, but all in all it's not an extremely difficult or tedious novel to read in its native language. I highly recommend this book! I believe that Lazarillo de Tormes is highly underrated, and should get just as much hype, respect, and attention as Don Quixote.

Nobody knows for sure who wrote this early novel. But we should be glad he did. This book takes the form of an autobiographical tale, where Lazaro de Tormes tells his misadventures. He is a street-boy, an orphan in constant risk of starvation in a poor Spain, where the richess of the New World never trickled down to the poor inhabitants not connected to the Conquest.

Lazarillo, then, makes a living -if you can call that to make a living- as servant to different miserable characters who exploit and abuse him. But he is anything but a fool. Lazaro is always on the move to cheat and deceive his masters, if only to be able to put something into his stomach and avoid starvation. His adventures are not nice, but brutal. Be it with a blind master, or an avaricious and poor priest, Lazaro is always having funny and hysterical adventures. The best thing about the book is Lazaro's attitude: deep inside, the guy is a winner, not a loser, and he is willing to do anything to go up in life, as far as he can, which is not much: he ends up marrying a priest's mistress (check the mock at the Church) and landing a job which required him to accompany prisoners to their execution (not the nicest of jobs, but at least he got a salary). The adventures are hilarious, the character unforgettable by any means. Besides, you can get a good glimpse at the state of Spanish society at the time, but never forget that, even in rich societies, miserable people abound, and the Lazarillos are still out there, in the streets, living day by day, having adventures not funny at all. Good literature with a great social landscape.

This novel is a perfect example of the picaresque tradition in literature. Lazarillo is an orphan who tries to serves his masters, but they are corrupt and don't treat him very well. It shows a strong criticism of spanish society in the 16th century. It takes place in Spain of course, and also more specifically, in the city of Toledo. It is close to Madrid and is a beautiful city but here it shows the corruption of society. This novel is very important in the history of literature in Spain, and if you want to understand the history of Spain, this novel is neccesary.

As a Spanish student, I used to get scared off ot the "old stuff." You know, the stuff you may not be interested in but are forced to read in college, anyways. This book changed it all for me ,though. You don't often think of Neo-classic literature as "laugh-out-loud-funny," but that's what I found myself doing while reading Lazarillo. If you're one of the rare people who really got the physical comedy of Don Quixote while still appreciating the pathos, please please read try this book, too!

The work of Escher has captured the imagination of many people and in this book Bruno Ernst (a personal friend of Escher) expands our understanding of the artist. After a brief but concise biography, the author throughly analyses the most important facets of Escher's artistic output: the illusion in drawing, the use of perspective, the creation of impossible realities, simultaneous and contrasting realities, crystals, and the infinite. Escher was an artist who was unique in in his work, he stands by himself, and this book is a helping tool in understanding and appreciating the unparalleled magic of his work.

This is the best book on Escher's work that I have seen.

The greatness of this book on the work of M.C. Escher is that it shows how he worked up his ideas for various pieces. It also gives a thorough explanation of his thought and design process. It is truely a shame that this book has gone out of print. I sincerely hope that the publisher brings it back.

Be careful this is NOT a new Escher book. !

I just picked this book up thinking that there has been a "NEW" book published on M.C.Escher's work. When I got it home ,I checked it against other Escher books and was disappointed to find it is the same book published several times before and by different publishers.
As you can see the ,publication date of this edition is shown as April 6,2007.Therefore, the reviewers here must have been looking at a previous publication, possibly the one also listed here as a paperback in 1987.The copy I had was even earlier, published by Ballantine in 1976.
The quality of this Taschen Edition is very good, in fact, superior to the paperback editions I have seen; and will be enjoyed by anyone who likes M.C. Esher's work ;but the material included has not changed.
I believe this is an excellent book ,and agree with the reviews already written on other editions.
I guess what we have here is A 25 Year Celebration of its first publication.
This is an excellent chance to obtain this book and will be enjoyed, particularly by people new to Escher's work. The fact that this edition has now come out speaks volumes about what a great book this was,and it's great to see it available again.

This book is not worth it. The size of it is deceiving. It is not art, nor is it a real collectors item. The majority of the images appear in workout magazines and are easily accessible. There is no text (which implies it has one sole purpose) and the images in the magazines are much larger than what appears in this book. The only thing this book is truly useful for is cutting up and using for a high school girl's dream poster for her bedroom.

The blurb on the back cover is absolutely right, these guys do create " a desire for summer adventure" If you've never seen a Vista Video this book will certainly get you in the mood to watch one. Many of the Vistamen are here including Aaron, one of the models whose most synonymous with Vista Video, Carlos and Eric (two of the longest serving) and many others. These portraits are sheer works of art thanks to the models themselves and also to Ron Williams' skill as a photographer. The best picture in my opinion is of Jeremy, in a close-up with his arms hugging himself and his head at a cute, almost inquistive angle, as he looks into the camera with a warm heart-tugging gaze. But then all the guys look wonderful and even manage to keep most of their clothes on, except Mark, another of my favourites who cheekily stands nude behind a strategically placed surfboard. Some may find the lack of nudity boring, I think it makes an agreeable contrast to the more revealing nature of Vista Video productions.
This photobook is superb; A stunning book full of stunning men, which should appeal to anyone who likes good looking men.

If I say "I wanna go to Mi-yami!" will it make me sound too whiny?

Who cares? After paging through "Miami Heatwave," the first book to feature the work of talented videographer and photographer Ron Williams, and set against the backdrop of South Florida, who wouldn't be saying the same thing?

Anyone who has ever sampled Williams' video work will appreciate this collection of still photographs. The artistry of Williams lens, the absolute physical perfection of every single male model, and the fine quality of printing (by Bruno Gmunder publishers) combine to make this one of the best collections of beautiful male photography seen in a long time.

The only quibble I have with "Miami Heatwave" is that some models are featured more than others, and the book isn't nearly extensive enough. But then, how could you ever get enough of Manny's big grin, Darren's silken, shelf-like pecs with their chocolate brown nipples, and blond Mark's amazingly perfect torso and six-pack abs? And then there's the famous Aaron, with his blond, boy-next-door gone bad hunkiness. Sigh.

With Williams' discerning eye, I can imagine he probably has material for 40 books in his (no doubt) enormous files, but his reputation for showing only his very best work may prevent most of what he has done to ever see that light of day. What a shame for his fans like me, if only because Williams' work, even on his worst day, easily outshines the best offerings of others working in the same field.

For now, anyway, we will have to be content with what Williams offers us - but let's hope that soon there will be a "Miami Heatwave II," - and III, and IV . . .

If you enjoyed Giovanni's previous works, "Bites" and "Private Parts", you will be absolutely knocked out with "Un/Cut". I think it's the best of the three. The images of the models are beautifully photographed and quite thought provoking. These are some of the best "male members" you will see in any publication. Many of the photos display the foreskin drawn back to provide revealing shots. This is truly Giovanni's "crowning" achievement.

Un*/Cut is as beautiful a photo book about the penis you will ever see. There is a variety of penis types that keep you looking for more. There are black and white pictures as well as color. The models are as near perfect as you can get. I plan on buying several more copies for Christmas and give them as gifts to my special freinds.
So, if you like full frontal nudity and close-ups of the penis, this book is for you.

Yet another masterpiece by Giovanni. This book accompanies "Private Parts" and "Bites". A truly "must have" of the all natural uncut male.

Giovanni (a self-confessed moniker for a famous fashion photographer) continues to focus on an obsession/admiration for that object of historic dispute - the male phallus. For centuries art vogues have either lauded the masculine symbol for fertility and power, whether in sculpture of the Greeks or paintings of the Renaissance, or those passing fads have draped or even lopped off the au courant offending organ. While Giovanni is far from the only artist to finally bring full frontal male nudity to the same spotlight once monopolized by female nudity, he is one of the major voices working today who focuses his art away from fashion on the male penis.

This book UN*/CUT is his third foray into the examination and presentation of the genesis of creation and it is in many ways his most successful. The photographs are all of the male sexual organ, this time around each of the organs is uncircumcised ('uncut'), and the penis is the sole point! The models doubtless are fine specimens of men, but here Giovanni limits his exposures to the groin. The photographs are beautifully executed, with some of the most sensitive lighting and composition imaginable, and the design of the book of both black and white and color images is of the highest quality. Giovanni is interviewed at the close of the book and his comments are warmly sensitive and honest, explaining and not apologizing for his choice of subject. There is a fine Foreword by Jazz expert Jim Eigo that sets the tone for the pages that follow - and those pages capture the penis in flaccid and erect pose, at times with the models' extremities as part of the image, but never with the faces showing, making it very clear what the message of the book is about.

It is refreshing to finally see books of this quality offering a platform for what has become the last frontier of accepting our sexuality. Artists such as Giovanni discard the past prudish prejudices and let the images speak clearly for freedom of expression. This is a quality book and the audience will likely appeal to women as well! i've perused this a couple of times in the bookstore, and have been really underwhelmed.

it's penises. lots and lots and lots of them. there's not much creativity in the composition or lighting. very few of the images has much aesthetically to offer except a penis with a foreskin, of which there are ample examples elsewhere, done more artistically. i was expecting a sort of celebration of the many variations of foreskin, but with many of the photos, they're erect and/or masturbating, so the foreskin is minimal or not visible at all.

it's a professionally produced book, so as one reviewer observed, the images are "high quality"; the shots are close up and clear, it's true. but that doesn't mean that they're actually interesting to look at... if anything "un-cut" might refer to the lack of editing.

The images are pretty sweet. My first male photography book. My friends and I enjoyed checkin' it out. It has quite a few different styles and techniques which my friends and I really liked. Since I'm into photography as well, it gave me some ideas of new ways to shoot.

In his preface to this quite amazing book Claus Kiessling says that this is the first anthology "coming from the house of Bruno Gmunder, a unique project uniting a variety of styles." David Leddick, well-known and respected for his several collections of male nude photography, also has written a short preface. There are well over 300 photographs included here by sixty-seven artists (in alphabetical order) from around the world-- Germany, the U. S., Canada, Spain, Russia, France, England, Belgium, the Netherlands, Austria, Lebanon and Thailand. Some of the photographers are well-known, having published books or been anthologized before-- Tom Bianchi, Kristen Bjorn, Seva Galkin (in a recent edition of "Blue" magazine), Christopher Makos, Joe Oppedisano, Jeff Palmer, Howard Roffman, James Spada, Steven Underwood, David Vance, Carlos Quiroz, Kingdome 19-- and probably others of whom I'm not familiar. The pages are not numbered and the artists are listed by residence, e-mail address and sometimes their date of birth. A few of the photographs are named in the photo index included at the end of the collection. What the editors have done admirably here is to let the photographs speak for themselves; and they do, loud and clear.

There is an embarrassment of riches here and certainly something for everyone regardless of your interest or fetish. The photographs are in color, in black and white, in focus, out of focus, sharp and grainy. Some of the men are shot in classic poses, other have props running the gamut from masks to ropes, leather, lingerie and designer underwear of course. There are skinheads, an amputee, and men of different races.

Some of my favorite photographs in no particular order are Kristen Bjorn's shot of two nude men standing overlooking Rio de Janiero (I believe), Christopher Makos' six beautiful head shots, Monopoly's erotic "Colt rehearsal," Bruce LaBruce's humorous set-- particularly "Black Sheep," Aaron Cobbett's stylized sailor shot, Jay Diers' "Ty 1" for the beautiful side lighting, Matthias Herrmann for the guts to do those outrageous self-portraits, Matthias Kort for the wonderfully lit "Uwe," Joan Crisol's work, Mark Lynch's "Paul-The Old Warehouse, 1999" for obvious reasons, and the first photograph by Kelly Mink for its great composition. Finally the four photos of Carlos Quiroz-- is he influenced by Edward Weston?-- "Nude LVI," "Nude LXXXI," "Nude LXXXVI" and "Horse" are original beyond description. At first, I was totally convinced I was seeing a rose in the second photograph!

Someone will have to work long and hard to publish a collection of male nude photography better than this beautifully reproduced and printed book.

The book has some great photographs all with a good quality for both the execution and the print. Still not up to the 5 stars of any of Paul Freemans books. Bondi Work, Bondi Classic etc but still very enjoyable and well worth the money.

...we're in trouble! The selection of artists covers the highly salable 20% art/80% pornography ratio. It also illuminates just how derivative contemporary male photography is. Buy a book of Mapplethorpe, Pierre et Gilles, Mark Morrisroe and get the real deal. Or make a donation to an art school. On the upside, the book is well produced and shows artists from a range of countries.

Bruno Gmünder Verlag Gmbh is a highly regarded publisher of photographic essays, taking more risks than most other production facilities in this country. This very impressive book surveys contemporary photographers whose works emphasize the male nude and contains sixty seven artists from the well known to the emerging and the result is a hefty volume of both black and white and full color images that offers as wide a spectrum of 'visions' as any book to date.

After a Foreword by the always readable and well-informed David Leddick, the book unfolds in sections based solely on the individual photographers fortunate enough to be included in this panorama. The pleasure of this particular book on the male nude is the variety: images range from the hilarious costumed fantasies, to the brutally erotic, to the quietly sensual, to the 'model look', to the beefcake stance. Included in the collection are the very well known photographers Tom Bianchi, Kristen Bjorn, Ed Freeman, Steven Underhill and Kingdom 19 and the works selected form their large repertoires are fine choices indeed.

But it is the pleasure of meeting new ideas from lesser-known photographers that is encouraging: David Vance, Joe Ziolkowski, Roger Nguyen, Troy Phillips are but a few. The artists are from around the world and for those of us familiar with the works of such photographers as Adam Raphael, Norm Yip, Eric Olson, and John Sonsini among others seem like a much-missed exclusion. But not every artist can be included in a volume even of this scope, and the book stands as a first class collection of the many ways the male nude can be celebrated. Highly Recommended.
