Unfortunately I was expecting it would be a book with instructions on bondage particular to the male anatomy. But my expectations were not the books faults, I should have read the descriptions more carefully. This is fine book of photographs of men tied up in various situations. Very artistic.38618790935112007-10-25TOTALLY HOTThe images will linger long after you have closed the pages of this magnificent book.38618790935112007-09-17fantastic!i loved this book. the guys are hot, the ropework is great, the photography is great. if you enjoy men and rope bondage, this is a must have. 38618790935112007-06-21"I was amazed"I enjoy the coffee table type of book mainly due to their large size and clarity of images. I have a collection of books dealing with Male Photography. This book is not the usual type of book that I would think of buying. But, I decided to take a look at it, you never know in life if you don't take a moment to look at something different. Well, much to my surprise I was really blown away by both the photography and models, an exquisite blend of eroticism and beauty. I think I have been converted and from now on will look for more of Van Darkholmes books. Kudos to him!38618790935442007-03-19Hardcore Graphic pics!Just an absolutley stunning book, photos are high quality, men are also..

A nice variety of different men and every one is easy on the eyes.

Sexy, stylish and worth every penny.
Men in difficult straits - on purpose and freely chosen. In most pictures, however, the model covers his genitals with his hand.

The models look good for the most part. Their age seems to be in the late twenties. They are well-worked with a lot of muscles. Whether that is beautiful or not, depends on the reader. In my opinion there are only few beautiful models in the book.

If you prefer to look at naked males, who cover up their genitals then this book would be right for you. If you prefer to see it all in nude pictures then do not buy this book!38678701605792006-10-15Kouros: A Tribute to the Male FormDavid Vance has produced a fine book of black and white photography of the male nude, the black and white format emphasizing his recreation of timeless attitudes and poses of athletic young men. The Kouros of Greek origin were statues of young athletes usually placed in courtyards or public spaces to either celebrate the glory of the male physique of prominent athletes, or to engender fertility!

At first glance the poses in which Vance captures his models may seem theatrical to the extreme, but given the concept of the volume - that the male physique at its peak form has been a model of excellence since time began - the poses soon capture the imagination and the possible sculptural ideas begin to leap of the page.

These models are beautifully muscled and developed athletes whose forms in the natural state before the camera vie for the best in the sculptures of the great artists of the past and present. Erotic, yes. Pushed to the extremes of definition, yes. Prettified at times, yes. But it all works. Vance has a keen eye for the juxtaposition of hard flesh with soft drape and soft light and his photographs are for the most part timeless in nature. A fine exhibition, this, and one that deserves attention as much as his famous celebrity photography ventures. Not only is this book for the prospective newf buyer but also for the owner/breeder who wants as much knowledge as they can learn about their breed. Great, great resource!!09448754754002006-02-24I love this book! This has to be one of the best breed-specific books ever written.09448754755232004-07-15Newefie LoverI purchased this book recently since I was getting a newfie pup for the first time. I have a golden too but I wanted specific information about the breed. I found it to be very informative, easy to read and understand. It has photos (which I like) that are of nice quality. It is a must for those who want to know more about this breed or want to have a good reference on hand.09448754755002004-01-26couldn't be betterI have read, almost cover-to-cover Emmy Brunos book and it is, by far the most comprehensive book about ANY breed I have ever had the pleasure to read. She has lived with and bred these wonderful animals most of her life and shares most of her knowledge with us, the reader. I could care less about the pictures being black and white, get a good calendar if thats what you want, its the information that is so critical that she gives, and her love of the breed which oozes from every page. Her knowledge is vast and she holds nothing back. I have gone back to that book time and time again for many many answers that I have had. I recommend this book highly and a good calendar for pics if neccessary. This comprehensive treatament of the breed is the zenith of writing on this subject. Already translated into two other languages from the original Italian, the work has been a best seller in each language. The study of anatomy, history, and a novel way of looking at the axiom for follows function make this book one of a kind.1593782837Newfoundland (Kennel Club Dog Breed Series)1577790618The Newfoundland, Gentle Giant0764133993Newfoundlands (Complete Pet Owner's Manual)0759663297Ninety-Nine Newfies0876052464Newfoundlands Today5050Breeds5049Dogs5043Animal Care & Pets48Home & Garden1000Subjects283155Books5052General5049Dogs5043Animal Care & Pets48Home & Garden1000Subjects283155Books713329011General AAS5049Dogs5043Animal Care & Pets48Home & Garden1000Subjects283155Books5056General5043Animal Care & Pets48Home & Garden1000Subjects283155Books713327011General AAS5043Animal Care & Pets48Home & Garden1000Subjects283155Books394181011Hardcover394174011Binding (binding)388186011Refinements283155Books618083011Printed Books618072011Format (feature_browse-bin)388186011Refinements283155Books0833549057http://www.amazon.com/Zucchini-Warriors-Bruno-Boots/dp/0833549057%3FSubscriptionId%3D05ERXYTS89KFGEPQR5G2%26tag%3Dthebookrevi0b-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3D08335490573380904Gordon KormanLibrary Binding9780833549051740833549057EnglishEnglishEnglish7701240USD$12.40Rebound by Sagebrush1Book1999-10Rebound by SagebrushYoung AdultRebound by SagebrushThe Zucchini Warriors (Bruno and Boots)525380000004.511308335490574002006-09-05The Zucchini Warriors This book is about a couple kids Bruno and Boots, that want a recreation hall where they can just relax, but instead they built a football stadium and the school doesn't even have a team. A professional football player that came to their school built the stadium and made them a deal. If they create a good football team, he'll make them the best rec. hall he can. Mr. Carson "Hank The Tank" had a food call Zucchini sticks and they tasted really horrible and no one wanted to eat them but they didn't want to hurt his feeling so they pretended to eat them and came up with all these ideas on how to get rid of it. What they would do was they'd flush it down the toilet get huge trash bags and leave it in the woods.

Boots wasn't doing that good as a quarterback and his team needed help so he had this girl named Cathy from across in the other school to dress up as their friend Elmer since she's shaped more like him and play for Boots since she was really good and they wouldn't let her play for the team. There also was this kid named Sidney. Sidney was a blabbermouth even if he promised not to say anything he would say it, and nobody wanted him around definitely when they were having a girl play for Boots, and throwing away the Zucchini sticks after being caught once because they made a horrible smell when they threw them out in the woods.

They wanted a design on how the rec. hall would look like so they had their friend Elmer draw a blueprint. After he was done they didn't like the idea, but his friend had these Hamsters that escaped the cage and they found the animal eating the Zucchini sticks and they had an idea to feed the Sticks to the Bush Hamsters.

After having Cathy play for them later on, they earned their Rec. hall by being really good, but they got caught throwing out Zucchini sticks and told Mr. Carson they didn't want to hurt his feelings, and also they told everyone at the game that Boots was letting Cathy play for him all along, because he thought the principal was being arrested, but he wasn't and he felt stupid after. After that the principal had a talk with them and told them cheating in unacceptable and then Mr. Carson walked in and said "I think that disqualification was dumb, but you guys showed me you played hard and good and I said that if you'd do that, you'd get a rec. hall so I'm going to make since the school is going to wind up making one anyway, I'll just make one with more stuff." The boys were really happy, but there was bad news. They had to clean up the huge mess on the football stadium but they were still happy they got their rec. hall. Then Bruno Called them over and said look! There's more than 4 bush hamsters now!

I liked this book because it was about 2 boys who wanted a rec. hall and they played on a football team to get it but they were bad so this girl helped them and made them better and at the same time they had to throw out those Zucchini sticks secretly at night and there was so many things happening that it was very interesting.

One thing I liked about this book when Boots and Bruno asked Elmer to hide when the games were going since Cathy was acting like Elmer while the game was going on. Then Elmer said "Fine, I'll do it but you'll never ask me for anything again if I do it, ok?" And Boots and Bruno said ok and signed a contract. Then later on when they had to clean the football field of all the Zucchini sticks he asked Elmer to help and Elmer said remember that contract? Then Boots was saying c'mon elm' that was 2 weeks ago. Then they Bruno called them and instead of 4 bush hamsters, there was many of them because they reproduced while eating the Zucchini sticks.

One thing the author could've done better was to explain how they acted when they were in the rec. hall and how it was built better. Other than that, I liked how the author wrote the book.

By: Adam Class: 80308335490574112005-10-28The Zucchini ReviewThis book is humorous and exciting at the same time making it a sure touchdown! It will most likely be easier to understand and will be more enjoyable if you are a fan of football and understand the rules. Being a football fan/player myself I understood the football parts. Basically, the story takes place when Bruno and Boots, two roomates, decide they want a rec hall for their school, but no one seems to want to pay the money for their idea. But when former Green Bay Packer great Hank the Tank Carson comes along and wants to start a football team at his former school, he is willing to buy a rec hall for his players... if they can manage to win. Unfortunately for the boys, and the school, Henry Carson is also the owner of Mr. Zucchini Sticks, the delicious fluffy fried zucchini sticks that he thinks everyone enjoys. Boy was he wrong. They take many twists and turns to find ways to win but never doubt Bruno Walton's creative ideas.
The only thing I didn't like about the book is that some parts of the story were completley random and had no effect on the outcome. One thing I especially liked was that not all the action was on the field, but most of the humor happened in the dorms and in the classroom. In my opinion, the best character was Bruno because he was funny, creative, and mischevious. Overall, I thought it was a very good book and I recommend it to anyone who enjoys humor and Gordan Korman. 08335490574112005-10-28The Zucchini ReviewThis book is humorous and exciting at the same time making it a sure touchdown! Overall, I thought it was a very good book and I recommend it to anyone who enjoys humor and Gordan Korman. 08335490573112005-03-08Just so-soFor me, this book is when the series starts to lose its magic and just seem like Korman is churning out more of the same. The characters and the writing are solid, if predictable, but the plot has too much emphasis on the struggling sports team of misfits, most notably a superstar girl player who must hide her gender as she racks up the wins for the team.

I'm just used to the Bruno and Boots series dishing up more original storylines, and I think that it was a good thing that Korman moved on to other characters when he did.

Korman remains a great writer who has a real knack for bringing out the humor in strange situations. However, in this particular book, everything just seems a little stale, especially the idea that Bruno and Boots continue to fear the Fish, even though after umpteen years of breaking the rules, his austere personality hasn't yet manifested itself in the form of severe consequences.

If you are a Bruno and Boots fan, by all means read this book, but if you're picking up this author for the first time, start at the beginning of this hilarious series and work your way through them chronologically.
08335490575562001-05-17A Way of Life"A Bruno and Boots Book" is such a poor description of this series. These books ought to be shelved under "Philosophy of Life" because Gord comes through time after time with lessons and truisms, but most of all, the man gives you something to hold on to. So open up "Zucchini Warriors" (probably his best work, I've read it literally 72 times) and cling to every word he gives you...this book is hope.Roommates Bruno and Boots find obstacles in their way as they attempt to lead the Macdonald Hall Zucchini Warriors to a victorious football season and earn the reward of a new recreation center.0590442139This Can't Be Happening at Macdonald Hall0590442058Beware the Fish! Super!B0007EQ0G24222006-12-13The Whole Story -Katie S. On the morning of December 7, 1941, the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. At that moment, the terrible suffering and war that seemed so far away from America reached its shores. America was no longer safe. People panicked, and anyone of Japanese decent became the enemy, even if they were loyal U.S. citizens. Not so much unlike the Jews of Europe, the Japanese of America were sent to detention camps out of fear that they might still be loyal to Japan and betray the U.S. Among the many Japanese prisoners was Mine Okubo, who wrote and illustrated her biography, Citizen 13660, about what it was really like to live in Japanese internment camps during World War Two. Okubo's account is full of detail and elaborate drawings on every page, giving the reader an inside scoop into what internment camp life was really like.

Citizen 13660 is a complete account of Okubo's life from the start of WW2 in 1939 to when she was released from the internment camp after living in several other camps over a couple of years. She was a Bay Area resident living in Oakland when she and her brother were forced from their homes along with 110,000 other Japanese Americans living on the West Coast. They had to put most all their belongings into storage and leave for Tanforan Relocation Center, which was located in what is now South San Francisco. The living conditions were poor, and the camp was a mess. It was not the ideal place for any human beings to live. She goes into great detail about every aspect of camp life, and it was startling to realize just how bad the Japanese Americans had it. For example, "the flush toilets were always out of commission," (pg. 72) "the sewage system was poor," (pg 78) and their living quarters was a "20 by 9 ft. horse stall." (pg 35)

If you are looking for a book that is well written and a great piece of literature, I would recommend reading some other book. Citizen 13660 is mostly just simple sentences describing the detailed illustrations on every page. Rather than describing her life through words, she tells her story through beautiful pictures. Yet even with minimal words, she still manages to get her message across. I recommend this book to people who are looking for an easy yet interesting read, and to people who would like to know the real story behind the Japanese internment camps.
B0007EQ0G24222006-12-13What Really HappenedThe novel Citizen 13660 is an exceptional graphic novel that describes the events of the Japanese internment camps. I truly enjoyed the novel by Mine Okubo because it used both illustrations and text to describe the events of the internment camps. Another reason that I really enjoyed the novel was because Okubo describes the camps the way that she experienced them. She doesn't add detail to make the events more or less atrocious. In other words, it wasn't a personal attack on the American people, which is what I expected before opening the novel. Furthermore, Okubo provides a basic understanding of what Japanese internment camps, which is something that I feel that people need to learn about. I think that it would be an exceptional novel for junior high and high school students to read since many American history books don't discuss the Japanese internment camps. Also, since cameras, video recorders, etc. were banned from internment camps and since most of the camps have since been destroyed, Okubo's illustrations illuminate what it was like to live in the internment camps. The images of the hard straw coming out of a thin covering that was supposed to be their bed and the restrooms that provided no privacy and unhealthy conditions are stuck in my head. For those that truly believe these camps were created for the protection of Japanese people, I would like you to look at Okubo's illustrations and explain to me your definition of the word protection.
As previously stated, there are limited pictures and videos from the Japanese internment camps. However, if you are interested in viewing footage of the internment camps, the film "Something Strong Within" provides footage from ten different internment camps. Through this film, you can see the horrid conditions that the Japanese people had to live in. It also shows images of teenagers graduating high school in an internment camp. I found these images to be extremely effective because there are so many things that we take for granted that the Japanese and Japanese Americans didn't have the opportunity to experience. Through this film and Mine Okubo's graphic novel, people can learn about the struggles that the Japanese experienced during World War II.
B0007EQ0G25112006-12-11Visuals and TextI don't know how anyone could read this novel and not appreciate the text and visuals simultaneously. It would be easy to just read the text, but the visual representations created by Mine Okubo are profound and provide the viewer with a greater understanding of the events that Mine Okubo and other Japanese Americans underwent while in the camps. Unlike other graphic novels, the text and image are separate and not integrated. Some may find this difficult to read the text and than view the picture or vice versa, but the sketches were created while Mine Okubo was in the camp and than the descriptive text was added later to correspond with the visuals. These sketches were a descriptive journal for Mine Okubo, who like so many others wasn't allowed to bring in cameras or video recording devices to capture what she underwent and saw while in the camps. Personally, I found the text and visual continually playing of one another and neither one would have been nearly as successful without the other.

Many of the internment camps no longer exist and what remains, "are pieces of concrete, pipes, and wire," they are but a cemetery to the past. Mine Okubo has created a piece of living history and has produced a personal memoir for herself and the United States. This even should never be forgotten and should be a key portion of history that is taught within our private and public schools. Art is an expressive outlet that provides a means of releasing tension, anger, sadness, and anxiety. During the internment other artists and writers were creating profound works of art to communicate and further understand their own circumstances. For anyone that questions the relevance of this text a film that is worth watching is called, "9066 to 9/11." This film takes a look at the secretive footage taken by Japanese American Internees in the camps and corresponds their hardships and mistreatment with our current predicaments based on the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
B0007EQ0G25112005-12-12A Reply to the story of the whole, not the individualI, personally, have never been into comic books, but since reading Maus I and Citizen 13660 I have found a new appreciation for art mixed with text. This graphic novel is excellent. I disagree with the idea that we need to know the "deep insight into the feelings of the author"; that is what makes this novel so powerful. She intentionally leaves the emotions up to her audience. This is not necessarily a story about woe is me. It is a story about survival, when life hands you lemons you make lemonade and you share it.
I do agree with the dark sense of humor within this novel. And I must say I like it. Life was hard for the Japanese. These camps were not easy and sometimes rather inhumane. The weather was extreme, the food was scarce, and there was absolutely no privacy. But Mine Okubo is able to take some terrible scenarios and laugh at her characters, which enables her audience to laugh. It also made me think about what it means to have freedom and privacy. Today, people rarely even talk to their parents and siblings, let alone, their neighbors. As depicted in this novel people were practically living on top of one another. And to be to find a sense of humor through it all shows an amazing sense of character.
Overall, I think this novel is a thoughtful, selfless, piece of art. It shouldn't lose credit for being a graphic novel, or lacking drama. It should be applauded for the value of the factual, overall picture painted within it. It should be applauded for allowing its readers to be affected in anyway that it may, the book world is full of tear jerkers, we don't need anymore soap opera text filling our minds with junk. Jemima is a duck who wishes to hatch her own eggs. Apparently it is common on farms for hens to sit on duck eggs. Ducks in general, and Miss Jemima in particular, do not have the patience to sit on a nest for 28 days, so farmers transfer the eggs to hens. Jemima, however, is quite determined to hatch her own brood, and searches for a calm, quiet place to do so. In a secluded clearing, she meets an elegantly dressed gentleman with a long bushy tail, who is reading a newspaper. Jemima thinks he is mighty civil and handsome, and he is very solicitous of her plight. Jemima takes the sandy colored gentleman up on his offer of a safe, dry place to hatch her eggs. But there is more to this gentleman than meets the eye. Is he really as selfless as he seems?

THE TALE OF JEMIMA PUDDLE-DUCK quietly and deftly teaches children to be wary of strangers. This simple tale completely captures the imagination of young ones as they follow Jemima on her misadventures. As always, it is Ms. Potter's charming illustrations that are the true star of this book. Jemima looks like a real duck, albeit one who is wearing a bonnet and cape. The soft colors and rich detail of the original drawings continue to delight children of all ages.

My three year old has a special affinity to THE TALE OF JEMIMA PUDDLE-DUCK. Whenever the story refers to Jemima's sister-in-law, Mrs. Rebecca Puddle-duck, my wee one says, "That's me, Momma!" Any book that captures the imagination of my little puddle-duck is a winner with me.
15898927475002008-06-18The tail of Jemima Puddle-DuckI purchaced my grandson baby china from wedgwood with Jemina Puddle-Duck pattern on it. Jean Renoir said once. " We should remind that a field of wheat painted by Van Gogh can arouse a stronger emotion than a field of wheat in nature."

Camus stated "To create is living twice" ; on the other hand Richter himself said: "the role of any artist is to build an invisible bridge between the work and the listener", for example Velazquez and Goya, one disappears from the picture, while the other is present in it.

The extraordinary pianism of Richter is based among other supreme qualities in his fertile imagination and ability to create atmospheres, finding the keyed liasons between the spirit and the meaning of every score he played.

Here you have the basic element of his fabulous pianism.
057122511X5692004-02-24not a writer but his fascinating life comes throughIf you are a devoted pianist this book will ring inside you, the daily arduous burdens of practice of interpretation, learning music, traveling. Richter was a fabulous deep thinking pianist,he knew how to tame/channel his emotions, serving the music but this lifeworld complexity hardly comes through between-th-lines for he was not a writer. If you are a performing musician you can finish Richter's thought. We cannot be all things to all people.
He reports on concerts, his own and recordings, his own(largely he was always displeased) The incredible scope of his career, traveling much after 1960 spanning decades, living through the darkest pages of Soviet Russia, all this comes through his directly functional words. His power as pianist was not forcing his career, allowing himself time to develop a repertoire and more importantly reflect upon it.His first teacher Neuhaus said his tone was brittle, to concentrated, it needed to "breath" more, and he learned this. His Schubert for example(a "breathing" composer) was come to very late, as the G major Sonata that befuddles many pianists. There is no substitute for what time and duration does to one's playing, this is something hardly ever learned by cigar-chomping agents. Make a quick Buck! Hell with interpretation and Hell! with music as it should be.
Richter had incredible power as a pianist, many conductors will reveal how he can consume the work,as Gennady Rozhdestvensky will reveal. The orchestra must hold its own, as in the Brahms Bb Concerto, or Tchaikovsky.Although Richter to my own ears, only found great interpretive conviction in Rachmaninov and Prokofiev, two composers he felt were very close to each other, and to himself. (although Prokofiev would never openly admit this. Scriabin and Chopin as well Richter had great strength under the surface ornamentations, extended colouful harmonies and brooding darknesses.
He claimed he only practiced three hours a day unless he was given a work to learn quickly as Prokoviev did with his late Sonatas. But given Richter's incredible memory I doubt this.
There is chronolgy(almost day to day) of Richter's life beginning in 1970 given here in concerts.
There are also nice vintage photos of his travels.057122511X511112002-01-15My favourite book from 2001!I've enjoyed this book enormously and don't mind that, as Monsaingeon tells us in the introduction, this is not exactly a biography- the title of the book also makes that clear.
The style and tone of the book are wonderfully simple and direct, and many passages are very humourous. I especially liked Richter's description of Maria Yudina and the accompanying photo's (in the second photo she looks like a tramp in sporting shoes). It tells also of the eccentricity and powerful personalities (especially Yudina) that today would, I'm afraid, be ridiculed. The whole atmosphere of Russia, despite it's enormous injustice, seems ages ago from today's streamlined concerts, planned a year or more in advance, where pianists receive enormous salaries.
There was some discussion in Holland when the documentary came out about the title (the enigma). The original title in French was "l'insoumis", which, according to a French friend, means somebody (especially a soldier) not obeying the rules and following his own path (the dictionary gives the translation "unsubdued"). I think the original title is more in line with the book also.057122511X419232001-07-14Very interesting, but after 200+ pages, he's still an enigmaI recommend this book, whether or not you've seen the companion documentary. However, as the film's title states, Richter is an enigma, and he still will be after you've read this book (or seen the film). With every page you get the impression he's keeping out as much as he's letting us know--and that's certainly his right. I'm not saying I'm looking for a "tell all" book about SR and frankly wouldn't want one. But there are times he stays frustratingly superficial about things: he denies he likes smaller venues for performing (I think it's kind of obvious he does), says repeatedly he does not like America "because everything's so standardized." Am I to believe that there's less variaty from Los Angeles to Maine than there is from Moscow to Odessa? He never really explains his beef with America or Americans, yet says being here made him "nauseous." His relationship to his wife and, of course, his homosexuality remain undiscussed. That's fine, except there's a lot of footage in the film where you find yourself wondering who took pictures of Richter that way, and why. (The scene of him wrapped in bedsheets running about is particularly interesting and humorous.)
The potential reader should also be forewarned that he reveals virtually nothing about his own art and insights. Anyone who enjoyed Joseph Horowitz's Conversations With Arrau and is looking for something similar will be disappointed. It very well may be that Richter was incapable of explaining or comprehending his talent. Or perhaps it was pretty much as he said, that it was pretty obvious to him how a piece should go because "all one has to do is read the score." He summed himself up with Kurt Sanderling's remark about him, "Not only can he play the piano, he can read notes too." To many such as myself who have been at times overwhelmed by Richter's mastery, that may seem too simplistic, and even like a veiled statement (deliberately simplistic, in other words), but that's what he says. And listening again to some of his greatest recordings, maybe it really was as simple as that.
He also clearly became a sadder and sadder man as life went on. There is some discussion in the foreward of health troubles and lengthy hospital stays, but this too is not really talked about in any detail, and we are left with a very incomplete picture. So if you buy this book you will have a fuller picture of Richter, but we are still seeing him through a veil, and I have a feeling the author wants it that way to protect some things he may not want to reveal, or that Richter may have asked him not to reveal before consenting with his cooperation. At any rate Richter is still an enigma after this book and the video, but a fascinating enigma nonetheless!057122511X317212001-06-05be careful now....First off. I'm a Richter zealot. I own 200+ recordings of Richter. I went out of my way to acquire a collection of Japanese laserdiscs of Richter performances. Richter's performance of the Rachmaninoff Second Piano Concerto is for me a celestial performance. So...what about this book? I think unless you are pretty hardcore, this book will be a disappointment. It is not a biography. While I found Richter's ruminations on performances and recordings interesting, it is inconceivable to me that the average music lover would want to snuggle up with this book the way they might with a truly well-researched biography. Richter's life is fascinating, but I don't think it really comes across in this book. The author is honest in not portraying the book as a biography. And there's a great reference list of works that Richter has performed in public. What he didn't perform is almost as interesting as what he did -- e.g. he never performed Rachmaninoff Third Piano Concerto or Moonlight Sonata of Beethoven. I'd recommend waiting a year or so till someone does a great bio on this artist. In the meantime, watch the video that this book is based on. While everyone else seems to be giving rave reviews, I just can't see that. I gave my copy away.
Sviatoslav Richter was a dazzling performer but an intensely private man. Though world famous and revered by classical music lovers everywhere, he guarded himself and his thoughts as carefully as his talent. Fascinated, author and filmmaker Bruno Monsaingeon tried vainly for years to interview the enigmatic pianist. Richter eventually yielded, granting Monsaingeon hours of taped conversation, unlimited access to his diaries and notebooks, and, ultimately, his friendship. This book is the product of that friendship.

Richter reveals himself as a man and an artist. Unsentimentally and with his characteristic dry humor and intelligence, the musician describes his poignant childhood and spectacular career, including his tumultuous early days at the Moscow Conservatory and his triumphant 1960 tour of the United States. His laconic recounting of playing in the orchestra at Stalin's surreal, interminable state funeral is riveting. Most important for music lovers, Richter discusses his influences and views on musical interpretation. He describes his encounters with other great Russian performers and composers, including Prokoviev, Shostakovich, Oistrakh, and Gilels. Candid sections from his personal journals offer his sober and unguarded impressions of dozens of performances and recordings--both his own and those of other musicians.

This volume offers readers the sizable pleasure of lingering in the thoughts and words of one of the most important pianists of the twentieth century. Unlike many other star performers, Richter was also an intellectual who had interesting things to say, particularly about the musician's proper role as interpreter of the composer's art. This alone makes the book worth reading. Sviatoslav Richter belongs on the shelves of everyone with a classical music collection and will also appeal to lovers of autobiography and admirers of Russian musical culture.
0486266958Great Contemporary Pianists Speak for Themselves (Dover Books on Music, Music History)B00004CXNYRichter: The Enigma [Region 2]B00000DD44Sviatoslav Richter Plays Chopin, Debussy, Beethoven0671638378The Great Pianists: From Mozart to the Present1871082455The Art of Piano Playing502876General265046Journals265040Accessories504358Formats251254011Custom Stores44258011Specialty Stores283155Books2338General2331Composers & Musicians2327Arts & Literature2Biographies & Memoirs1000Subjects283155Books713040011General AAS2331Composers & Musicians2327Arts & Literature2Biographies & Memoirs1000Subjects283155Books4510General4507Music86Entertainment1000Subjects283155Books713223011General AAS4507Music86Entertainment1000Subjects283155Books10114General10108Essays17Literature & Fiction1000Subjects283155Books713390011General AAS10108Essays17Literature & Fiction1000Subjects283155Books400272011Paperback394184011Mass Market401237011Trade394174011Binding (binding)388186011Refinements283155Books618083011Printed Books618072011Format (feature_browse-bin)388186011Refinements283155Books3861873710http://www.amazon.com/Young-Men-Falcon-Studios/dp/3861873710%3FSubscriptionId%3D05ERXYTS89KFGEPQR5G2%26tag%3Dthebookrevi0b-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3D3861873710415254http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51P8HJ7GF7L._SL75_.jpg7554http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51P8HJ7GF7L._SL160_.jpg160116http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51P8HJ7GF7L.jpg475344PaperbackFalcon Studios8139783861873716303861873710EnglishEnglishEnglish9001795USD$17.95Bruno Gmunder180Book2003-08Bruno GmunderBruno GmunderYoung Men of Falcon656601019USD$10.19950USD$9.502030011ATVPDKIKX0DERhttp://www.amazon.com/gp/help/seller/home.html?seller=ATVPDKIKX0DERNewnewCteSVHa9orZK4wQw86HnefStP0muTh0XUJkLVvUmDg%2BsqtVM4aSSJ8H%2Bt8t9IY%2FpKLX85WIf6%2BKnK7GFNUV3mQ%3D%3D1221USD$12.21Usually ships in 24 hours4.59238618737105342005-04-08STUNNINGLY BEAUTIFULWOW!!...This collection of Falcon Stars is absolutely beautiful, just like all the work done by Falcon. As a result of this, and the fact that I am an inherently morbid person, I have read a great deal on the kidnapping of the baby. While I too question whether the right man was captured in the case, and while this book raises some interesting questions about the motivations behind some of the key players, this book is based on a number of assumptions that were later proven to be wrong out of hand (including an assertion that the corpse found was not the Lindbergh child, arising from a misprint in an early reward poster). The book is outdated, somewhat prone to be conspiratorial in a manner not favoring the airman, and really only suitable for persons deeply interested in the history of the case and trial, not those with a passing interest. However, if you really are interested in the kidnapping case, this is a good work to read, if nothing else for the balance it provides, and suggestion the popular answer isn't always the right one.

"Truth cannot be measured by majority opinion." Humanae Vitae, Pope Paul VI 06708060644222006-09-16A miscarriage of justice...I have read several books about the Lindbergh kidnapping and the Trial of the Century. A friend recommended The Airman and The Carpenter: The Lindbergh Kidnapping and the Framing of Richard Hauptmann by Ludovic Kennedy. Whether or not you believe that Bruno Richard Hauptmann was guilty in the kidnapping of the Lindbergh baby, you can't help but be outraged over this historic trial.

Kennedy starts by giving a brief look at the backgrounds of Charles Lindbergh and Richard Hauptmann, as well as the period of time leading up to the kidnapping. Months after the baby was kidnapped and the ransom paid, the baby's remains were discovered four miles from the Lindbergh home. Marked ransom bills trickled into circulation, but it wasn't until over two years later that an astute gas station attendant wrote the license plate number of a patron who paid for his gas in marked gold certificates. This led police to the illegal German immigrant, Bruno Richard Hauptmann.

From the time of the arrest, the New Jersey State Police, led by Norman Schwartzkopf, Sr. latched onto Hauptmann and refused to consider any other scenario or suspect. Schwartzkopf was ill-prepared to handle such an important and high-profile case, having "never patrolled a beat or arrested a criminal." In fact, his only experience was as a floor-walker for a department store. He also refused to bring in the FBI (kidnapping was not a federal crime until after the Lindbergh kidnapping). Believing that Hauptmann was guilty but having only circumstantial evidence, the state police went to extremes to see that Hauptmann was convicted. They doctored employment records and confiscated others. They took his two ¾" chisels out of his toolbox, and then presented the toolbox in court--claiming that the chisel found at the crime scene belonged to Hauptmann. They suppressed evidence that showed that more than one person was involved, and that someone in the Lindbergh household may have provided inside information. They got two Lindbergh neighbors to lie and say they saw Lindbergh near the crime scene. They refused to allow the defense team to see Hauptmann's house or garage. This list goes on and on. And if it wasn't bad enough that the prosecution cheated and lied at every turn, his own lawyer was a big Lindbergh fan (had a photo of the aviator on his desk) and never believed in his client's innocence. The incompetent Edward J. Reilly was paid for by the Hearst Press and suffered from alcoholism and the final stages of syphilis. In four months time, he spent only 38 minutes with his client. One of Hauptmann's secondary attorneys claimed that "This is the greatest tragedy in the history of New Jersey. Time will never wash it out."

The major complaint that I have with The Airman and The Carpenter is that Kennedy gives us only a very superficial examination of the aftermath of the trial. Written in 1985, he certainly could have looked much farther than he did. While I am still not convinced that Hauptmann was totally innocent, I do believe a gross miscarriage of justice was done in that Flemington, NJ courthouse.
06708060645442006-02-19An Argument Against GuiltThe author was in New York in September 1981 and saw a TV show with Anna Hauptmann; after half a century she passionately declared her husband Richard was innocent of the crime. This impressed him enough to pick this subject for his next book. Other books were on miscarriages of justice. Kennedy is against the death penalty (but for euthanasia!?). He used the recently opened case archives in Trenton for this book. The 'Introduction' tells the reader what to expect from this very readable book.

Part One is a short biography of Charles Lindbergh. [It does not tell you that his Congressman father opposed the private banking cartel known as the Federal Reserve System.] Lindbergh's love of practical jokes suggests a flawed personality. Part Two tells of Richard Hauptmann. In the war he learned to do whatever it took to survive. Lawlessness increased after the war. Hauptmann burgled and robbed and was caught and sentenced. His adventures showed quick-witted daring. Hauptmann reported for work at 8 am, March 1, 1932. After work 5 pm he went home, then picked up his wife around 8 pm (p.80). Part Three explains what happened after the baby was kidnapped. Two sets of footprints were found leading from the ladder. The Lindberghs decided to stay over on Tuesday morning, so the kidnappers were either very lucky or had inside knowledge. After a ransom note arrived, $50,000 was given to a man in a Bronx cemetery. Then the body was found near the home. Part Four tells of the continuing investigation, and Hauptmann's life and friends. The Lindberghs lived as happily as possible. One of the ransom money bills led to the capture of Hauptmann.

Part Five notes the methods of the investigation of Hauptmann. Kennedy explains how a witness is prepared to identify a suspect (p.176), and criticizes their methods (p.177). But Hauptmann often lied (p.178). Pages 179-182 explain how the ransom note was forged: Hauptmann was forced to copy the note with its mistakes! There is implausibility in removing a plank from the attic (p.212). The fingerprints on the ransom note and ladder did not match Hauptmann; his shoe size did not match the footprints (pp.213-4). Page 216 tells how they found an eyewitness. Rail 16 was 1/16" thicker than the attic flooring (p.220)! Page 226 explains how evidence disappears when it challenges the prosecution's case. Part Six explains the actions of the Prosecution. Evidence was fabricated (p.242, 244). Defense lawyer Reilly was crooked or crazy (p.242). The trick with the ransom note is on page 276. The study of handwriting is an art, not a science (p.277). A chisel was removed to incriminate Hauptmann (p.295)! The "expert" witnesses impressed the jury. Part Seven tells of the efforts by the Defense lawyers. How could a professional carpenter make such a ramshackle ladder (p.309)? Page 314 tells how Wilentz threatened a defense witness. Rail 16 had "only one nail hole" after the kidnapping (p.317)! The other facts to prove it didn't come from the attic are on page 319. The jury found Hauptmann guilty in the first degree (p.344). Part Eight lists the efforts to overturn the sentence. Hauptmann's lawyers argued against the unreliable testimony of witnesses. The Court of Errors and Appeals affirmed the verdict. Given the evidence, the verdict was correct. Hauptmann "collected the ransom money and was therefore the kidnapper" (p.363). Governor Hoffman was advised that the trial was flawed, and Hauptmann was not guilty (p.366). Hauptmann pointed out the flaws in the case (p.367). The Court of Pardons would not commute his sentence (p.377). The evidence against guilt is on pages 383-384. There was a problem with Rail 16; it didn't fit (p.389)! The 'Epilogue' has the aftermath of the case. Page 409 tells of Lindbergh's gullibility on the German air force; or was it his fascist sympathy?

Kennedy says Hoffman "failed to win re-election as Governor in 1938" (p.408). Governors then were limited to one term of three years (as in most other states). The neighboring county is Warren, not "Warner" (p.241). One important clue in this case was the baby's pajamas; whoever had them took the baby. Where is this mentioned?
06708060645112005-03-23An Argument Against GuiltThe author was in New York in September 1981 and saw a TV show with Anna Hauptmann; after half a century she passionately declared her husband Richard was innocent of the crime. He keeps the reader interested throughout. Of all the books putting forth a theory of Hauptmann's innocence, his is the best written.

However, from a historical perspective, it is actually quite disappointing. For example, Kennedy insists that Hauptmann was working on 3/1/32, the day of the crime. However, Hauptmann testified at trial that he was not working that day. There are also sev
