Practical and Clear about Performance ManagementReview Date: 2008-09-07
One of the better Performance Management booksReview Date: 2008-05-17
There are precise examples of how change is made, with company stories, that allow for organizations to understand that change is possible. This book is now on my must reads list, and I will give it to every executive I work with.
I'd put this book before the Kaplan Balanced Scorecard books and even before Competing on Analytics. The style is concise, the case studies are relevant and the roadmap guidance to changing an organization is approachable.
BI Must ReadReview Date: 2008-05-14
My favorite part is their defined "Six Stages of Performance Management Value". For those who know me, it aligns nicely with my "crawl, walk, run" approach to business application development. The "money picture" is how they show the six stages, listed below, in concentric circles; illustrating the evolution and associated benefits of a commitment to Performance Management.
This is actually a book that you can read cover to cover and feel like you get value from every chapter. Read it then buy a copy for your boss... then find a way to get to the sixth stage!
An essential guide to business transformation for performance improvementReview Date: 2008-06-07
The Culture of Performance (CoP) Model presented by the authors bridges a gap between the establishment of a performance measurement framework (e.g., Balanced Scorecard, TQM, Lean, etc.), and the tools and methods brought to bear in executing performance measurement (read: Business Intelligence). CoP is a comprehensive model for evolving organisations into the strategy-focused enterprises that Drs. Kaplan and Norton envisioned years earlier. To be certain, we all stand on the shoulders of giants.
That the authors chose to include "culture" in the name of their model cannot be understated: it directly addresses organisation-wide cultural transformation as it relates to the adoption of performance management (through the model's six phases). The authors demonstrate, with compelling evidence, that a company is more likely to achieve its desired outcomes when all its members adopt a performance-oriented mindset. Here, case studies on Expedia, Energizer and The Veterans' Health Administration (U.S.) each strike a chord on the sometimes painful transformation to a culture of performance. Aziza and Fitts make these findings practical, encouraging incubation through scored questionnaires, supporting capability models (MAP) and guiding principles. The final chapter of the book provides an excellent summary that aligns said scores to an entry point into the CoP model; this provides a reasonable indication of where an organisation may begin to improve business performance.
This excellent book warrants careful review and consideration-- it represents fresh and illuminating thinking from two of the most prominent figures in the field of performance management. For executives, directors and managers looking to improve business performance (as well as consultants specialising in performance management) consider this book essential reading.
A great guide to understanding performance managementReview Date: 2008-05-20
Fitts and Aziza provide a comprehensive look at what Performance Management (PM) is and just how successful organisations can be when they succeed in creating a "Culture of Intelligent Execution". Central to the book's philosophy are what the authors have dubbed the "Six Stages of Performance Management Value". Targeted lists of questions at the end of each section enable readers to assess their organisation's current PM capabilities.
For mine the book's greatest strength are the anecdotes and quotes peppered throughout to underscore each topic. It is obvious the authors went to a great deal of effort to interview high-ranking members of companies who spearheaded some very successful PM implementations. The information gathered in these interviews coupled with well-chosen quotes from the likes of Winston Churchill, Henry Ford and many others serve as evidence to support Fitts and Aziza's Six Stages and the culture of performance management in general.
PM is not just something that can be thrown together in a few weeks by a couple of interns, it is an organisation-wide paradigm shift that takes time, effort and dedication to bear fruit. As recounted many times within the book, the rewards to organisations who implement an effective PM initiative can be very substantial.
This is a great book to hand to anyone who is considering implementing any form of PM. It details plenty of good "See! They did it, why can't we?" case studies as well as providing practical guidance describing how to do it within your own organisation. Highly recommended reading.

MEN OF KRISTEN BJORN is a satisfactory male photography collection to any worshipper of those dark, brooding looking GODs on earth. Every single precious page is lusciously printed and an upclose revealing to some of Bjorn's famous video stars. Seductive eyes. Deep, ethnic coloured hair and polished-like skin. Voluptuous arms and forechest. Thick, veiny and uncircumsized (plus a horse sized model) that is enough to leave you mouth wet.
Unpretentiously erotic, don't miss this noteworthy collectible print of goodness. (Also look up to the new, equally fascinating TASTE OF ITALY.)

Dark Is The Color. . .Review Date: 2004-02-27
For those familiar with Bjorn's books and erotic videos, this is just much more of a very good thing. Even if you prefer blonds-- and gentlemen do-- you'll change your mind after a run-through of these models ready for action. There's only one man here who could be classified as a blond. But there are lots of Latinos and black men-- and a few with that unique combination of black hair and blue eyes.
The models are posed at the beach, on mountains, on leather sofas, in the jungle, and the hooty cover shot with purple irises. My favorite photo is of two nude men with a view of Rio I believe in the background. All the photos are flawlessly composed and in glowing color. Several of the shots have 3 or 4 or 5 buffed men in them, all the same height, in keeping with Bjorn's vision of perfection.
A Falcon model, himself, before he went to the other side of the camera, Bjorn reminds of that and includes a color photo of himself, along with a short bio at the end of the book. He's every bit as handsome as the men he photographs.

Johan ... many men's dream boy. A gripping collection.Review Date: 2001-10-21
I imagine that most guys will have seen Johan at some time, principally in the Bel Ami videos which are themselves outstanding. Most of the images are of Johan, although there are some of him with other Bel Ami boys. How they find these beauties is a mystery. As always, Johan just exudes "sex" from every page. He and the others seem to truly enjoy their modelling and that sense is captured in every photograph.
I would draw your attention to Howard Roffman's book of photos entitled "Johan", which let us glimpse this 'wunderkind' some years later in his life, and you can see his body becoming slightly more rounded and adult - much more sexy in my view.
There is almost a "Hamilton-esque" style to many of these pictures - not in the poses, but in the feel, the lighting etc. They could almost be 'misty'.
Despite the colour (I prefer B&W) this book makes a welcome entry onto my bookshelves.

This book should definitely be in your collection. These pictures celebrate sex, not artistic concept. They are open and honest, with no excuses. Enjoy!

As anyone who has tried nude modelling will know - looking this fit, humorous and unstressed is not easy, Johan Paulik is surely one of the top models.
This is a five-star book, but if you prefer some more XXX-action (like me), you will prefer the videos...

I love Fred!Review Date: 2008-01-25
MAJORLY HOTReview Date: 2005-08-26
FINE PHOTOGRAPHS, BUT...Review Date: 2001-08-02
PICTURES OF FRED has, first-rate, candid and more formal portraits of this very young, handsome, French model and gymnast. However, the accompanying text is so precious that it becomes annoying, esp. with several "typos" in only two pages of text. And since this descriptive essay is very brief, appearing at the beginning of the volume with portions reproduced in various other sections of the book, I wondered why it was even included. Why not have a writer as good as Roffman is a photographer write the text and make it much less manipulative? Some of the phrases are actually as melodramatic as the kind found in paperback, romance novels (i.e. "One night I found Fred alone. He seemed sad, withdrawn...The conversation shook me. Fred had kept his wisdom hidden...By the time the sun set, we were both drained. We collapsed on his couch, and he fell asleep in my lap, naked, vulnerable.")
If a picture is worth a thousand words, I'd like some more pictures and alot fewer words, please.
Sublime! Breathtakingly beautiful! Buy it!Review Date: 2001-11-09
There are a combination of formally posed and more naturally posed photos, and all seem to connect the reader to the model's core. I feel that B&W is the best medium to capture this aspect of erotic photography as you are not distracted by colour.
Fred, a French gymnast and model, is beautiful. He seems at times both carefree and self-aware. Roffman captures the spark of youth.
You really MUST buy this book; you'lle be pleased that you did.

A glorious erotic collection - set to make your mind sizzle!Review Date: 2001-10-22
It's difficult to find words enough to praise this collection of Roffman's work. His models are simply magical (well all but one!), and their sensitivity, shyness and youth simply flood from the page to your eye and then to your brain.
I suspect that many guys will simply absorb themselves in the pictures and wish they could dive in and hug many of these boys - and boys most of them are. No hardened, pumped-up, muscle-Marys here; simply a collection of great boy-next-door types.
Tha accompanying text gives context to the models and the photographs; Roffman says that he loves Brian, the first profile portrait we see. Well, so do I! He just too perfect and is, for me, the very best of what is a superb collection of pretty boys.
Highly recommended for its soul, its insight, its quality, and for its presentation of first-class eye candy.

Lucchesi at his best.Review Date: 2006-12-19
In a real sense Bruno is a man that should have been born in another time. His sensitivity to the human figure and his love for fired earth is the stuff of a true Renaissance man. He captures the imagination and brings life out of clay.
What is most inspiring aspect of this Italian born sculptor is love to teach and share his skills, tips and tricks with other aspiring sculptors around the world. Sculptors like me. No studio library is complete with out all of his books and tapes.
Bruno works with slabs of clay smashed on the floor and then quickly forms them into layers of mass that are shaped into the maquette. His attention to proportion makes him the artist that others have sought to imitate, and none can completely duplicate.
Inspirational. Witness a Master at workReview Date: 2003-03-06
The second time, I was disappointed because of the limited explanation and technical descriptions.
But once I understood what this book was really about, I loved it.
It really is a documentary of Lucchesi at work. You can witness him working. The book is very visual.
You will not learn sculpturing, but you will get the chance to see an accomplished sculptor and his creation.
The book does not tell the why's, you can see the how's.
My copy is now really filthy, with stains of terracota all over it. I keep it by my working bench, and quite frequently, in the middle of my work, I open it to see how Bruno does it.
My recommendation is to buy this book in addition to "From Clay to Bronze " of Lagland.

On Born Into Turmoil...A Book Review by Sean T.TaeschnerReview Date: 2003-02-26
The book is universally appealing in its portrayal of young boys in search of adventure in a world of chaos and/or peace.
Reading it reminded me of the many stunts pulled by Tom Sawyer as written by Mark Twain.
Bruno gives a refreshing, yet solemn biography of what it was like to grow up as an indoctrinated, Nazi youth. His father was drafted into the German Army as a medic in Poland while Bruno, himself, was drafted into the Hitler Youth movement. Hiding Jews and helping Poles were only a few examples in the book of the kindness of his parents.
Bruno
gives examples from a Nazi propaganda book, The Poisoned Mushrooms, in which Jews are depicted as animals and thieves and
slaughterers of innocent animals...not to be trusted. One can only imagine the effects it had on the minds of young German
youth at the time.
Luckily, with the advance of the Allies into Germany, Bruno's family is captured and re-indoctrinated...able
to let go of the hate that was sown into a country so full of beauty and promise.
As a German teacher, I will make it a
must read for my students. I feel it is a story they would be able to relate to on a personal level.
Bruno tells of having
lied about having appendicitis in order to skip school, and ends up with his appendics actually being removed! He finds a
bazooka in the woods and fires it into a tree...knocking him and the tree to the ground and setting the surrounding grass
on fire. He is starving for food and invents ingenious ways to feed his family, including making himself potato pancakes.
Lacking lard or butter to fry them in, he resorts to using Singer sewing machine oil...only to discover that it turned out
quite delicious.
From leaping onto a moving Allied train to steal coal to keep his family warm or bicycling with a buddy
across Europe on $3.85, he keeps the reader intrigued and squealing in delightful laughter the whole way through. It took
me six hours to read and I recommend it to anyone who wants to see war from the German side.
This is a MUST READ for those
who would believe that HATE is the only way to resolve conflict.

A Struggle to SurviveReview Date: 2002-06-20
"Born into Turmoil" will offer the English speaking reader something different and fresh. Mr. Lange chronicles his experiences as a child growing up in Germany during the Second World War. Together with Mr. Lange you will experience the dreadful bombing raids, and the daily struggle to survive during an unbearable hardship. The theme which keeps surfacing throughout his book is his families love, and how this love managed to preserve the family through the war.
When the war ends we witness the resourcefulness of Mr. Lange and his family as they try to survive while being threatened with starvation, and roaming hoards of "liberated" criminals. As time progresses we are given an insight into what things were like in post war Germany through Lange's eyes.
No serious student of these times should be without their copy of "Born into Turmoil", It will give the reader a better understanding of the "other sides" story, and a more complete picture of a larger whole.
