I am happy theese kind of books still exist on the Earth! If not this book, nobody will have a chance to realise the Georgian injustice to Abkhazia and the fact of commiting genocide to the nation, that now has only about 300 people left worldwide.

A classic text. Bruno tackles the problems of studying an art form where most of the important works haven't survived. Instead...

"...the scholar can make intelligent speculations based on provincial examples of ancient painting or the relatively minor art of vase painting, and such speculations have lead to important revisions of our interpretation of the written record."

Bruno's work here is focused on two central topics: the painting of the three-dimensional form and the use of color. (Regarding color, are we really to believe what Pliny says -- that the classic painters limited themselves to a palette of 4 basic pigments?)

Excellent Book On Anxiety Disorders
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2003-03-13
C.B. Scrigner's From Panic To Peace of Mind is truly one of the classics, when it comes to books on anxiety and panic disorders.

Dr. Scrigner's book is unlike most that you will find on the subject, in that he approaches anxiety disorders from a largely unbiased point of view. Most books in this category preach purely cognitive methods of combating anxiety disorders and agoraphobia, while others focus on the physiological aspects of the disease. This is one of the few that draws a balance between the two, and acknowledges that no one solution is right for everyone.

This is a pretty basic book from most perspectives, so you will not need any prior knowledge of medical jargon in order to keep up. Yet it largely sticks to a clinical overview that is aimed at doctors, patients and others who are affected by anxiety/panic disorders, agoraphobia, obsessive compulsive disorders, and more simple phobias.

About the only downside of this book is its limited size and depth. It's a fairly quick read. There is only enough room for a fairly basic discussion of very complicated subjects such as psychopharmacology, cognitive therapy, methods of dealing with stress, etc. Still, it gives an excellent overview of these diseases, and the basic methods of treatment.

This is definitely not a book that pretends to "cure" people of phobias or psychological disorders, as many seem to do these days. What it will do is give you a much better understanding of how anxiety disorders "work" and how to most effectively treat them. For anyone with an interest in anxiety or panic disorders, this is an excellent volume to have on your bookshelf.

I went through this book as part of a 10 week workshop offered at a church shortly after 9/11. It is amazing. I had long been a member of peace and justice groups, but this book impacted me more than many other things I have done. I am trying to get every peace group and church I know to lead groups working through this book.

How Could I Have Missed These Flicks?

HvH, "Gone to the Movies", Bruno Gmunder, 2008.

How Could I Have Missed These Flicks?

Amos Lassen

It has been said that they don't make movies like they used to and they obviously do not make movie posters like the ones in "Gone to the Movies", a parody of movie posters. HvH has taken classic movie posters and redesigned them so that they are extremely homoerotic.
This is a wonderful collection of drawings that is great dun. HvH changes the names of films and stars to give us a whole new way of looking at Hollywood. I found it very hard to pick a favorite as each is so ingenious. I do, however, lean toward "Cockapatra" starring Lickbeth Gaylor, Dick Burbon and Sex Garrison presented by 69th Century-Foxy. And of course there is "Bareback Mountain" starring Hot Leader, Jack Gimmeall, Mark Thatstheway and Michael Willing and "Gigantic"--"the cruise lines that gave new meaning to cruising..." with a cast led by Jamie Wood and Sucking Smiths (will Amazon post this?).
It's all tongue in cheek and all great fun. I thought I recognized HvH's work but it wasn't until I read the introduction by Eric Arvin that I realized that I had actually read about the author on Eric's website and realized that he had done the covers of Eric's books. Like Arvin says "there is intimacy in his (HvH's) art, even at its most epic...he inspires us...he entertains us, he makes us think". The artist's work is filled with passionate color and skillful use of shadow and his eroticism is in no way cheap or offensive. He is touching and unique and I look forward to seeing more from him.
