USA: The New Barbarians

Review Date: 2008-01-30
The title for this book could've easily been "Shock and Awe: The New Barbarians".

Be warned this is no coffee table book. From a Belgian photographer, it shows dramatic photos of Baghdad before the American annexation, and later, of dozens of civilians wounded or killed by American cluster bombs and American "intelligent" missiles at the time of air raids on Baghdad.

But for the difference in intensity due to weapons technical development, there's substantially no difference between the London bombings by the German Luftwaffe in WWII and the American destruction of large parts of Baghdad on occasion of "Shock And Awe" in 2003 as it is clearly depicted in this book.

After all this, Americans ought to substitute the stars in their national flag with swastikas. After all, the German people elected Hitler to power, and the American people did the same with George W. Bush. Twice. Will he end the same way Hitler did? This is an excellent, first class book. After reading it, you'll have your own answer to the above question.

Outstanding Fun!

This is an outstanding fun and enjoyable kids book that you will read for years and years. It has little Bruno who has a big dilema, he has to get back to Italy to see all of his friends for a wedding, one problem, NO MONEY! So what does our hero decide to do? He makes a box, puts a bunch of food in it, and mails himself to Italy at a fraction of the price. There are lots of little mishaps on the way which make this book a great little story which you laugh and laugh too. On of my favorite stories as a child I believe it is the most exciting kids book I have ever read.

Glorious!!!!

This beautiful book is a translation, commentary and critical volume of Bruno Taut's Alpine Architecture. It illustrates and describes, each of the 30 drawings in Taut's original portfolio. The author has conducted extensive research at the Bruno Taut Archives in Berlin, and has produced a beautiful, careful and considered volume. In German and English, this book is fascinating, necessary and timely. I first learned of Bruno Taut from the exhibition catalogue "Expressionist Architecture"; it included reproductions of his exquisite drawings. This volume helps to bring more of this visionary artist to the English-speaking public (most of the scholarship on Taut was written in German and Italian). His writings, informed by the aftermath of WWI, are surprisingly current, if impractical. I have been moved by his writing and drawings and I am sure this book will be a great addition to your library.

Reading this book makes you want to sew an apron, regardless of whether you have any sewing experience. The character is skillful. He prepares the cloth, measures, and plans construction of his apron. Bruno shows that it is important to be careful with needles. He bleeds a little but quickly recovers from a needle stick and goes on with his work. The drawings are cute but also detailed. The picture of Bruno's workshop shows a must-see, beaver-shaped dress form toward the back of the room!

This book is a must for those of us who love Bruno Zupan's work. And there are bonuses in the book for us and for those who will learn about Bruno's work for the first time: The book is beautiful-a work of art in its own right, as are Jane Zupan's photography and her prose!

Excellent Comic Strip
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2002-02-24
The continuing adventurers of my favorite theif, this book continues Bruno's further adventures. Bruno is a refreshing and original comic,in which the main character, is stupid, selfish, greedy, and murderous. he's not afraid to kill a baby unicorn, or club a baby seal, but he still manages to foil evil demon's plans (who work part time as bar-tenders, or managing a fast-food restraunt) usually through sheer stupidity. I especially like how the strip continues to evolve, more characters are introduced, and the history of Rothland and Bruno is revealed. The book is quite an interesting read, and enormously funny, I reccomend all to get it immediantly.

She's W-A-Y tougher than I am!

Review Date: 2006-06-01
This book, written by an awe-inspiring young woman, is a great read for anyone of any age. It is decidely upbeat, yet candid about the realities of growing up a little different. While Ms. Bruno technically has a disability(it is important to note that her track times are faster than most good high-school men with both legs), the book really is less about that issue and more about surmounting the obstacles that we all face in every day life, whether moving from place to place and trying to make new friends or excelling and failing at the sports we love, or simply trying to figure out what we are all about. Ultimately, for Ms. Bruno, it is about making the choice every day that life is pretty sweet, and that all limits are self-imposed. Written by a woman with a never-quit attitude and an unabashedly youthful outlook on a life (who also seems to be clumsy despite her athletic prowess), this is a really fun read!
