Popular Science from the 20th Century

Review Date: 2008-01-10
Astronomy for All was written early in the 20th century as popular science. Certainly many scientific discoveries have been made since it was published, but more than the science, the times have changed. Credit to the author for including a chapter on women astronomers, however his point of view is of his era. Still, this publication is well worth reading. It is richly illustrated with black and white prints that are artistic, thought provoking, and so broadly interesting. It is as if Carl Sagan had written Cosmos 100 years earlier, and is quite an engaging read. I love this book.

Amazon's print on demand service works well. The volume was a nice paperback version of the original. It shipped promptly. If I had not known it was an on-demand book, I would not have suspected that based on the high quality and the quick arrival. Nice job, Amazon.

David has Outdone Himself...........................

David Vance has outdone himself in his second book of photography called "Attractions." I thought his first book "David Vance Photographs" was beautifully produced and the models breathtaking, but this new book of his is just as good or even better. The new models presented in this second book are once again very young, muscular & handsome masculine men. Most of these black & white images are in outdoor settings showing the men practicing sports, enjoying themselves and just relaxing. There are some models photographed indoors in very seductive poses, too, but no frontal nudity images. It's really not needed for these guys are handsome & erotic even semi-clothed. This is surely one of my favorite books in my collection and I'm sure it's a book that will be viewed over and over many times. Here's wishing David puts out another collection of his male nudes again in the very near future!

A photographic pilgrimage to one of the most beautifully ornate cathedrals in Christendom, this standout volume offers close-ups not available to the eye of on-site visitors.

One marvels again at the genius of Michelangelo, Bernini, and others. If Rome and Vatican city are not in your travel plans, this is almost as good as being there.

"Bad" Books = Good Reading

Bruno's books about wildcard fibbies, Gibbons and Tozzi, versus the mob go down smooth like a cold one on a hot afternoon in da Bronx! These are all one sitting reads, 'cause you can't put them down after the opening explosions.

Bruno's use of realistic lingo and action combine to create a movie in the mind. He must be a made man, cause he sure has the scat down. And, between Gibbons' perpetual grouchiness and Tozzi's hotdogging, the feds never looked so good.

It's hard to single out a favorite. Bruno runs the series like a steady play. Continuous characters allow you to get to know both the good guys and the bad guys well. The real hero in the series, though, has gotta be Bruno himself, who keeps them all believable and real.

I bought this book for myself because I love teddy bears. Once I read the book I feel in love with it. The story is wonderful and the message the bears left inside the presents is the best Christmas Gift anyone could give. I wish everyone had the bears spirit of Christmas all year long. With all the trauma going around the world everyone should think about the message of love and the real meaning of Christmas.

The Truth is it's A Beaut of a Read!

I hadn't come across Bouchet before this great book but I'll definitely be checking out his other work. If you like this book also check out Being Alexander, by Nancy Sparling which is also about a guy who gets mistreated by his boss and everyone else, reinvents himself and gets his vengeance. Bouchet's fellow Australian Max Barry also writes in a similar funny surreal style to Bouchet and his books Syrup and Company are must read classics.

In The Beauty of Truth Mark Boyd is an average guy, working at small and whitegoods company Vantex, whose co-workers see him as a bit of a joke. He is told to read a pamphlet called The Path to the Head of the Herd because he will going to the Blue Mountains for a week to improve himself and become a more worthwhile employee. He is not told the only reason he is going, is so that his boss will get a free holiday now that he has reached a quota of employees who have done the course. Fellow employee and secretary to Big F***er a man who is the legend who came up with the company's most profitable product, a huge fridge has chosen to pay for and do the course as well, to enhance her career prospects. Vantex is a company that believes any of its employees can come up with the next million dollar innovative idea and holds a conference where any staff member can present an idea. Rae and Mark both have ideas, both had been told by their superiors that they're ridiculous. At the end of the camp both are inspired to present their ideas and Mark has transformed himself into a more positive person and also the most beautiful man in the world.

Obviously not the most realistic book in the world but a very enjoyable humorous read that you just can't stop reading until the last page.

A Wonderful Diversion

Review Date: 1998-08-04
Those of us who love pouring through ancient journals- especially British journals, with their exceedingly polite and ultimately trivial harsplitting over pointless detail have a treasure in this book. The editor has taken and annotated gems from nearly 100 years of publication of this eminant journal, including some very amusing and ultimately pointless debates between a number of eminant Victorians. There are some useful inquiries as well; Francis Galton, having his portrait painted for the umpteenth time, begins a study of the number of brushstrokes used my the artist, and eventually concludes that the number of strokes in a given portrait seems to be consistent between artists and independant of style. Various writers suggest mneumonics for memorizing the significant digits of pi- in various langauges, and various meters.

On the more serious side, there is much discussion of the treatment of war wounds at the time of the Great War, quite a lot of debate about Prof! . Einstein, and some of Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman's first published writings in England- regarding the physics of musical instruments.

If this sort of thing interests you (and it absolutely captivates me) you should rush to buy this book lest as soon as possible lest it fall out of print.

Fred Goudon's new photography book is a stunning display of very attractive, relaxed sensual male nude models photographed in black and white. A lot of the models are photographed lying in bed alone, or in couples, and getting ready for bed, etc., thus establishing the theme of the book. Fred has a way of presenting his male models in a moody, relaxed way. These guys are not your standard run of the mill very posed male models. There is some frontal nudity but that's not really important here, because these models are very attractive even with half their clothes on. I really enjoyed this book because I feel there is so much more feeling and emotion in black and white photography than in color shots.

Fred Goudon was born in Cannes in the south of France back in 1965. He left Cannes in the 80's for Los Angeles to work as a press correspondent for magazines and newspapers. This is when he started photographing male models. He went back to France where he now lives, and continues to work as a fashion & commercial photographer. This was my first introduction to Fred Goudon's work and I really enjoyed this excellent edition of his work put out by Bruno Gmunder.
