An Architectural Classic
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.

I discovered this book in architectural school, and was intrigued at the way Zevi clarified everything I was then dealing with in vague ways in architectural school. The invariables, or "anti-rules", as Zevi calls them, are each given seperate chapters in this book. Listing of Functions, Asymmetry and Dissonance, Antiperspective Three Dimensionality, Four-Dimensional Decomposition, Cantilever, Shell and Membrane Structures, Space-in Time and Reintegration of Building, City and Landscape are all ideas present to varying degrees in various buildings at various times in history. Zevi shows how they can be used in a more deliberate and integrated fashion, no matter what the budget or funtion of any given building. He illuminates how these ideas are present in the architecture of times historical and times more recent, and underscores the value of non-conformist buildings for the enrichment of society.
This book gave me a tremendous creative boost at just the right time in my life and it's influence continues in my work. Marvellously illustrated with three-dimensional drawings and with photos, it presents a summation of the thinking of a great and scholarly mind.

Finally, someone challenges the normalities of Architecture.

This book is by far one of the best books I have read in a while. It is simple and to the point and Zevi does not hold back. It is a little dated, but all of his seven principles are able to be directly applied to the current state of architecture. This should be a mandatory reading for all architecture students. His opinions of the tendencies within society to praise the priciples of Symmetry, proportion, and order, show how architecture has been plagued by standardization and repetitive forms throughout history. A great book for anyone who is troubled by the generality of architecture (with great exception to the current masters, no less)and would like to see the boundries broken.

This photographic collection is charged with sensuality and eroticism. Peter & Petr are handsome young men who are able to convey to the camera, and hence their audience, their youthful passion and quiet intimacy. This is another of Roffman's masterpieces. his work always keeps one on the edge.

As a student I got my first one and am getting ready to get my next. The Pocket Pal should be required reading for everyone in advertising and production, from the art director, the production manager to the account team. These are need to know terms!

A classic!

Nearly 30 years ago, as an art student, I bought my first copy of this classic work. Small, clear and well organized, this book remains the essential guide for anyone who needs to understand the basics of graphic arts and printing production. Most of the artists and production people I know always keep a copy within reach. Like them (and me), you'll consult it again and again.

This was a pretty good book as far as photography goes. The shots were done well, there were a few of them that were really hot! I was not disappointed. The price was perfect for a book of this size, and for what you get. I would recommend it.

Indie alternative art porn at its finest

I'm a girl who likes her men and her porn natural-looking. Nothing beefy or shiny or cheesy. No props, elaborate sceneries, silly costumes, or strange facial expressions. This book is exactly what I was looking for. The guys are the kind of people you find standing behind you at the grocery store, sitting a few seats away from you in class, working at coffee shops and bookstores, working out next to you at the gym, or sitting beside you at a pub. They're just normal guys who happen to be posing nude/masturbating/making out with each other in their apartments, and there is something deliciously naughty about that being captured on camera.

Men and women alike would enjoy this book, especially if they (like me) are completely burned out on looking at fake, cheesy, low-rate pictures of ugly old men. Women trying to find the male equivalent of Suicidegirls would be especially happy with this book.

"Real Men" Get Photographed
Helpful Votes: 15 out of 16 total.
Review Date: 2006-12-06
Ray Dragon describes the models in this collection as "real men, naturally sexy, rugged and masculine." Many of them may be hairy, tattooed, muscular, buffed, moustached, bearded and with a piercing or two. Some of them are wearing jeans, underwear, jock straps, undershirts, jerseys, boots, etc., once again demonstrating that men are often sexier partially clothed than nude. The photographer has included in the book Caucasians, African Americans and an Asian American or two.

Mr. Dragon, according to his biography included here, began his career on the other side of the camera as a model for Jim French. There are several shots of him included here as he joins the ranks of other photographers who began as models, Bruce Weber and Kristen Bjorn, for example, and others whose faces and bodies are always included in their work, notably Tom Bianchi and Robert Mapplethorpe.

Some of my favorites in these 70 or so shots (the pages are not numbered) are the cover shot of course ("Franky Motorcycle"), the photo of Dragon wearing a coat and tie ("Ray Dragon Suited"), the photo opposite that one of the naked man standing on a rooftop ("Jake Standing"), the photo entitled "Long Underwear" for all the obvious reasons and "Ryan." Some day in the future he may enter the land of bears, but he is just right right now.

If I had one criticism of this most inviting book, it would be that while body parts are certainly interesting, sometimes they are more interesting if you get to see more of the body to which they are attached. Mr. Dragon says that these shots were digitally photographed. They are extremely well lit and beautifully printed.

If you are tired of pretty boy shots and the Adonis syndrome and like the work of the Austrian photographer Paul Freeman and Tom Bianchi, you will love this volume.

I have seen many books on the male nude, but Jay Jorgensen has an amazing eye for capturing many levels of sensuality seldom seen in books of this genre. Not only has Mr. Jorgensen found some of the most beautiful men in the world, but he has elevated the model in each photo to a new artistic high. This is one book to own and treasure!

Men Without Women
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-02-13
Four sailors and one naval officer take shoreleave and provide the viewer with eighty pages of the young male in all his glory. As they leave the ship, one sailor urinates in the street. They set out in a convertible, pick up a hunky hitchhiker, play beach volley ball, sunbathe and swim naked of course. They pop a beer, play pool, just hang out. One god reads Hemingway's MEN WITHOUT WOMEN. What else? Maybe SONG OF THE LOON since there obviously isn't a female within five hundred miles. And what's a little arm wrestling among friends? Finally these guys are back to sea in their sexy white uniforms.

These men are of course perfect in every way. While this collection breaks no new ground as far as this kind of erotic photography goes, it makes for a nice addition to anyone's collection. The photographer is Andrew Kennedy, Brancois du Plessis gets credit for concept and styling-- we are fairly sure that posing for these photographs is as close as these gentlemen ever got to military service-- Bruno Gmunder is the pulisher.

This is the textbook for the Lymphatic Drainage Therapy program offered through the Upledger Institute. You can purchase it from them for $75 if Amazon is unable to stock it. It is written in medical language and is for the practicing therapist. It can also be a valuable resource for patients, however.

The comprehensive text for the field of Lymphatics~a Must Have!

Dr. Chikly is THE Leader in his field and has truly displayed it in this amazing reference work. I have trained many modalities as a Licensed Therapist and his Manual Lymphatic Technique is one of the more astounding ones! I have been fortunate enough to learn them directly from him in Arizona. Bruno is a serious PhD expert, but at the same time one of the kindest, most genuine people ON THE PLANET~ we're talking Ghandi-like. The knowledge of this technique will forever shift your view of the body as well as the real power in gentle, almost touchless, techniques. Dr. Chikly has put his life work into this material and it is second to none on the subject. I really feel the medical community could benefit more from its increased usage, as could the general public for use at home. Anyone can learn from the mountain of information that's packed into this very nice hard covered book.

I first picked up a Spartacus guide while on my first trip to Europe. I could imagine planning a trip anywhere without the newest edition. It helps me plan, not only what to do somewhere, but where to go in the first place.
It gives you very good info on the countries, then breaks it down into cities and towns.
I have used it to find hotels, restaurants and bars, saunas, stores, everything.
The one thing I don't like is the key for the abbreviated descriptors is in book mark form, so if you lose that, you can be lost as to what some things mean. I usually carry a second photo-copy. Other than that, it has been a very valued resource
