An Antichristian book that was once banned

Although it may be argued that Bauer's Das Entdeckte Christenthum is far less subversive than Nietzsche's Antichrist (P. Trejo) or Stirner's The Ego and Its Own, I am of a different opinion. The Christanity Exposed or Demasked was not written by a Christianity hater, but by a Protestant analyst who had lost his faith in the course of his prior studies on the Synoptics and St. John. Written by a professional and critical theologian who had sincerely intended to confirm the existence of historical Jesus and attest to the veracity and validity of the Gospels, this book was also written by an ex-theologian completely divested of any religious illusions. The result he obtains is similar to the conclusion reached by Feuerbach in the Essence of Christianity (God is a human projection). Bauer's work was much praised by Schweitzer and may still be continued by Hans Kung. The Prussian authorities had a good reason to dismiss Bruno B. from Berlin University and were equally justified in banning the book which - much as it fails to comply with the research standards of today - sets out to pose a number of vexed questions and problems (eg Edelman's discussion of the Devil) that are likely to make ingenuous church-goers sustain a religious trauma. Incontestably B. Bauer was one of the ablest thinkers of his time and it is difficult to explain how and why his name has sunk into obscurity. (The reasons suggested by Trejo, however, seem very convincing.)

The day this book was published in Germany it was banned and the publisher was imprisoned. Bruno Bauer, the author, soon lost his position as a University lecturer, but he continued to write about history, theology and politics according to his conscience and his commitment to the freedom of thought.

Because Karl Lowith suggested that CHRISTIANITY EXPOSED (1843) might have been a model for Nietzsche's THE ANTICHRIST (1893), we may understand why there has been considerable hesitation to translate this book into English. I had to see this with my own eyes, and when I did, I realized that people greatly exaggerated the alleged radical nature of Bauer's writings.

This book is far milder than THE ANTICHRIST. In fact, Bruno Bauer here mainly reviews some writings from a theologian who lived in the 1700's, namely, Johann Edelmann. By modern standards this book should never have been banned, and there should have been no hestitation to translate it into English. It is well-written, thoughtful and scholarly.

The translators have done a fine job with this edition. It is easy to read, presented in contemporary English.

This is an academic book, hardcover, mainly for University libraries and scholars, yet it has inter-disciplinary interest, I think. Historians, philosophers, theologians, theorists and political scientists will all find something of interest in this, the first English edition of one of the most feared books of 1843.

Despite the fact that Bruno Bauer, the famous Young Hegelian, wrote dozens of books, this is only the third book of Bauer's translated into English. Thanks to this translating team, the English reader has a chance to see what all the fuss was about.

Best regards,
--Paul Trejo

There are so many good-looking young men and couples in this 13th Euros Edition, it's amazing. Kraus Gerhart knows how to pose his men and make it very pleasing to the eye. A very talented photographer who already has four books in print, and who produces yearly calendars as well as many magazine spreads. He knows how to bring out the warmth and sensuality in his images. This is one of my favorite of the Euros Series and I truly enjoyed it. I loved the cover shot. Highly recommended!

A small sampling of the extraordinary work of this master photographer of the male nude. With 7 books of his work published, this book is a taste of the style for which Klaus Gerhart is renowned. A bit of Ritts, a dash of Gorman, tons of beautiful naked men and a whole lotta class.

If you've found this review page, it stands to reason that you already have some interest in Giordano Bruno. I only wish to encourage you to read his works first-hand (or at least in a plausible translation like this one). The more knowledge of Renaissance culture you bring to the book, of course, the more you'll enjoy it. Even without that scholarly stuff, however, you'll find Bruno witty and thought-provoking.

On Febraury 16, 1600, this former monk was burned at the stake on charges of heresy. He died in the name of free thought. Yes, at first he offered to retract all of his heretical statements, but in the end, he decided that there was more honour in the penal fires than in a life like Galilei's. This book begins with an Explanatory Epistle. This letter alone is worth reading. The dialogues that comprise the body of the work were a trifle trying for me, as i have very little knowledge of the constellations, but please don't let this deter any possible readers from this work. As with any philosophical text, every reader should bring with him or her a willingness to concentrate on the book and the understanding that numerous re-readings will be necessary to appreciate the full depth of it. The bit where the messenger of the gods is telling Sophia all of the events Zeus has ordered to take place on Earth that day is very funny, so don't think this is all esoteric gobble-dee-gook that only some Ph.d. could enjoy. Shoot, I am only a high school graduate and I was glued to this thing the first time I read it.

A beautiful book of children's poems, translated from Japanese to English. The poems present a delightful children's perspective on the world. My 8 year old really enjoys reading these poems becuase he can tell that they come from the mind of other children. The book is filled with handsome color and black and white Japanese water colors. The layout leaves plenty of open space, so the book conveys a quiet peacefulness, like a Japanese tea garden. The publisher is Abrams, a first-rate art house, and it shows. The paper stock is thick and rich, the binding is solid. This is one that the kids will enjoy and the parents will appreciate. Highly recommended.

children have always had a refreshing view of the world that adults seem to loose- but now some has been captured and all are free to return again and again to majestical snapshots of our existence. long time poets will salivate with jelousy at the primal beauty of these children's works, read it all and savour the effects it has on your perception of language.

an excellent journalistic complement to the cold-war literature on the subject

International arms sales is one of the issues that I got into as a student of IR in the early 80s. I read Andrew Pierre's Global Politics of Arms Sales, which was so good that I almost pursued the issue as a career concern. I read Sampson's book at that time, and it was the perfect complement to the academic side of it: Sampson went to the places where catastrophe was brewing from arms sales run amok, evoking it in the vivid language of a real writer and with the eye of a first-rate reporter.

Sampson explains the economics, investigates the characters, and describes the environments they operate in. It is a true tour de force, as only the best journalists can accomplish.

However, the book is dated, as it was written in the latter part of the Cold War. With the US-Soviet rivalry, the dynamic was altogether different from today, when it was far more political to sell to your allies and potential clients. Now, it is pure economics on the selling side, while the buyers are more or less mercenary capitalist brutes.

Warmly recommended. But the interest is largely historical.

This is a sophisticated read - but well worth it! I am a child therapist and child development specialist and believe this book to be the bible of healthy child-rearing. Bettelheim is brilliant, caring and compassionate. Take time to read this prize, maybe 6 months or so. Read it slowly so that you can pick up all the messages and insights that he offers. Other great reads are Rudolf Driekers, "Children the Challenge" and Adele Faber's "How to Talk So Kids Will Listen." - Kimberley Clayton Blaine, LA, Ca.

He thinks it is ok for kids to believe in Santa, etc! Yay!

Ice Cream, Perverts, & San Francisco! Good Fun!

Anyone who has read Devil's Food and Double Espresso in the Kovacs/Marvelli series is in for the ride of their life with this third wacky installment about the lovable duo. In this episode, Marvelli is persuaded to go to San Fran with another parole officer, Vissa. Because of jealously and a concern for her ice cream addicted partner, Loretta Kovacs follows them.

It turns out to be a nightmare for both her and Marvelli(especially Frankie) Frankie ends up getting kidnapped by a group of S&Mers and is subjected to some torture. Loretta has to use all her smarts and Attitude to save him.

Boy is this book a treat. Literally too. The reader will be introduced to a new way of eating a hot fudge sundae, demonstrated by the dominatrix Sunny, with the unwilling help of Marvelli(I CANNOT GIVE IT AWAY, read it yourself), and the reader will also discover the secret ingredient of Elmer Fudge whirl. Meanwhile, we root on Loretta as time winds down on Frankie's life span, and she struggles to rescue him.

This book is hilarious. It has a dizty blonde in it, an unusual dog named Dragon, a Finnish lesbian massage therapist, a man who leaks, and other weirdos. Plus, there is a sex club in which Loretta infiltrates, and of course her attitude gets her in trouble.

Don't miss it! I bought this in hardback. And it was worth EVERY darn penny!

Hot Book!

Loretta and Marvelli hit book #3 in top form. For starters, they're finally, reciprocally, in love. Anyone woman who's ever identified with smart, sexy and somewhat overweight Loretta and her seemingly hopeless crush on a co-worker who is not only sexy but also one of the few remaining truly nice guys on the planet will find herself cheering. But the two New Jersey "Jump Squad" officers soon have more to worry about than being caught making out in an empty cell at the Parole unit... When the usual hilarious plot complications set in, Marvelli is sent on assignment to San Franciso, but instead of taking Loretta with him, his partner is the ultimate sex vixen, Elvissa Mylowe. Loretta, wracked with jealous insecurity (can we relate?), decides to call in sick, don a wig and follow the two to San Francisco. There the story twists and snakes down into the more sordid and bizarre aspects of SF's extremely alternative sex scene, as the three pursuers race to track down cruel and creepy Ira Krupnick, crook-turned-gourmet-ice-cream-manufacturer, who's screwing two women--Dorrie, his business partner's wife, and Sunny (one very hard-hearted dominatrix with a well-trained, vicious dog and a fully equippped S&M dungeon). The plot is as rich as the book's title, and the pace is fast: I ate -- er, read-- it all in one sitting--and a single paragraph can travel from sadistically sordid to funny to painful to heartwrenching. Bruno keeps up the suspense throughout and also delivers an answer to the age old question, in which part of the body does a man's brain really live?

"The Informed Heart" warns us that with new technology we may be losing our autonomy. The most telling part of this book for me was when a frustrated customer, after trying to cancel his subscription, finally punches holes all over his subscribtion card. Then the magazine doesn't come. Bettelheim's work is among the first to tell us the psychological impact on the concentration camp on inmates and its implications for our lives.
