If you ever wanted to know about the history of some of thee most famouse and influential firearms in U.S. history, this is the book for you.

Excellent information regarding JMB's life, his inventions and some of his greatest triumphs. Truly an amazing man.

The end of the book is probably the best resource I've seen for Browning firearms.

Great historical book

John Browning is one of the greatest firearms designers the world has ever known. Many of his designs are still in production over one hundred years after they were first sold. Some of these like the 1911A1 45 caliber pistol, which is approaching 100 years of continuous production, are still considered the benchmark from which all other semi automatic pistols are judged. As evidence of his genius, some of his machine guns and pistols he designed for the US Army are still are issued by various branches of the US Military and used in the Iraq war 80 years after his death.

To give the reader more of an idea of the importance of this person in firearms design, every lever action rifle, machinegun, and semi auto shotgun rifle or handgun made in the last 100 plus years incorporates a variation of or direct copy a Browning patent in the design. Even the Soviet AK-47 has design features which are taken directly from his patents.

Whether you like guns or not or just interested in the historical aspect, this is a very good book on the subject. Not only does this book cover John Browning's life as a prolific gun maker and inventor and to some extent his father, it also covers his life as a child and a young man as well as accounts of how his firearms effected the history of a new nation. This is also to a certain extent a historical look at a segment the early American west and the Mormon migration to Utah.

This is a a great book and very well written I highly recomend it.

This book covers the Kid from Caroline from childhood to before the '92 O's - and an amazing story it is. Kurt is the best skater there has ever been and perhaps ever will be, although Yagudin is gaining on him. Natural talent, personality, and flying feet make this man. After you read this book, go to videos and buy "Jump." You won't regret it.

A MUST have for skating fans!

Kurt Browning is one of the (if not THE) greatest figure skaters to ever grace the ice. If you love him, then you MUST get this book! Too bad it's out of print, though. You can probably get it through auctions. Believe me, it'll be worth it!

Portraits of marriage
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2002-10-18
On Valentines Day 2002 the PBS in America featured a one-hour documentary examining the status of marriage and family. This is the companion volume to that film, featuring leading marriage and family experts along with the stories, testimonials and recollections of many ordinary Americans. Taken together it provides a fascinating and incisive portrait of the related issues of marriage, divorce, parenting and family in contemporary American life.

The book features a number of perspectives, including those who argue for gay marriage and easy divorce. But probably a majority of contributors recognise (academically or experientially) that marriage and family are troubled institutions today, and they are in need of help and support.

Many of the articles are quite good, from a pro-marriage and pro-family point of view. A number of experts more or less supporting such a view are featured, including David Blankenhorn, Wade Horn, Judith Wallerstein, David Popenoe, Linda Waite and William Galston.

Many of their insights alone are worth the price of the book. For example, Wade Horn's article on fatherhood is an important contribution, given all the problems we have in this area: "..."

And the well-documented evidence is quite clear: children are hurt by father absence. Indeed, children are hurt by divorce. And the hurt goes on for decades. Judith Wallerstein, who has studied children for three decades after their parent's divorce knows this all too well:

"..."

And marriage is what best protects children. As David Popenoe reminds us, "..."

David Blankenhorn reminds us that marriage is more than just a private relationship. It is also a public institution. Marriage effects not just the couple, but the in-laws, children, and society as a whole. And marriage has even more far-reaching importance:

"..."

And it is not just the conservatives who make such claims. Democratic Senator Joseph Lieberman from Connecticut, for example, is also aware of these truths: "..."

In addition to the experts, many of the testimonies from ordinary Americans also strongly make the case for marriage and the natural family. Some of the heartbreaking tales of the impact of divorce on children for example are worth recounting. One mother offers this perspective on how her four kids responded to their parents' divorce:

"..."

Other stories could be recounted. But as this book makes clear, marriage is still very important for the overwhelming majority of Americans. And the institution of marriage is being severely tested these days. This collection of articles, stories and essays shows that marriage is more than just a piece of paper.

Engaging Accounts of the State of Marriage in America

This engaging read is a collection of complete transcripts of experts and "real people" interviewed for the PBS national broadcast of the same name. The program was seen in most markets on Valentine's Day 2002. There is a "Marriage--Just a Piece of Paper?" video that readers may want to seek out. The video video, narrated by television journalist Cokie Roberts, contains an extra half-hour of footage and should be required viewing in every church group, marriage preparation course, and high-school or university course on marriage and relationships in this country. The experts include a range of professionals--from academics, to judges, to therapists, to ministers, to United States senators from both political parties. The interviews with these experts along with those of men, women, and children and their "real life" experiences of family life today are all collected here. One particularly poignant interview with a dad in the process of divorcing, along with other accounts of fatherhood in the book, really opens the eyes to the important of fathers for families of and of families for fathers. Two of the Gen X women interviewed (and there are many Gen Xrs talking about the realities of dating, single life, and marriage today)--one a single mother and the other twice-divorced and dating--speak of their experiences with such humor and candor (and with such personalities in the accompanying video!) that they could be destined for sitcom stardom if they ever make it out to Hollywood. Read it straight through or interview by interview--but definitely read it and seek out the accompanying video if you want to understand the state of marriage and family today.

This first book by Rev. Jo Ann Browning speaks to women in everday language with biblical references as its authority. It shows us so much of ourselves in the biblical and historical women she refers to. Their trials, their triumphs and how we can have success in our lives based on their experiences. I especially like the chapter on Abigal, a woman of good understanding and of a beautiful countenance who was the wife of Nabal, a churlish and evil man. This woman saved her household from destruction and became the wife of a king. This book speaks to me as though Rev. Browning is delivering it from the pulpit. Rose Smith, Moncks Corner, S.C.

I have been collecting children's illustrated books since 1999;
I have nearly 1300 of them now. And I would put this one in my
Top Ten favorites. First, I like this particular story because
it takes place near the village of my German ancestors. Second,
architecture nearly always plays a large part in my list of top
favorites and this is loaded with wonderful old medieval
buildings (the illustrator's father was an architect and his love
for it shows). Third, I am partial to stories in rhyme which this
not only has but it is also very easy flowing rhyme. It is never
strained. Fourth, the moral remains in place and could in fact
be used in political discussion. When the Piper asks for
payment for his services, the townsfolk reply: "'What? Give all we have, the town's greatest riches! You'd be lucky to get a new
pair of britches!' The Piper stood still, and saw that these creatures had nothing of kindness nor truth in their features"
And last, I love making new & talented discoveries. I had never
heard of these two Aussies before, but I will keep looking for
their work from now on. P.S. The illustrator, Zak, came to
Australia by way of Prague, Czech Republic, which has probably
the greatest concentration of beautiful architecture in the
world. No wonder he is so good at depicting it!

This is a gorgeous book and a wonderful version of the story for young kids. The ending is of course sad for the parents in the story (the kids leave with the piper because the parents did not pay his bill), but for the kids in the story, things don't seem so bad. "The children left singing for a future much brighter. And thus Hamelin paid for the tunes of the piper." The illustrations are spectacular (some of the most interesting pictures I have seen in a children's book). I bought this book initially because I could not obtain an out-of-print version of the Pied Piper story which was recommended in Jim Trelease's book THE READ-ALOUD HANDBOOK (a wonderful resource for parents who want to teach children the enjoyment of reading and books). When I finally obtained the book Mr. Trelease recommended, I found I liked this version illustrated by Drahos Zak and retold by Robert Holden even better. My kids are in first and third grades, and both love this book (I love it too!) I recommend this book very highly.

Isobel Field was the stepdaughter of Robert Louis Stevenson and published her autobiography in 1937, covering her life from birth until 1894, when she was just 35. Her colorful life and memoir tells of moves between mining camps in Texan and Nevada, months spent in the art worlds of Europe, and her father author Robert Louis Stevenson. A lively first-person observational style throughout keeps the stories alert and spicy.

As a resident of Maui, this book had special meaning to me for it provided a view of Hawaiian society interacting with different society elements from all over the world, at a time when it was still an independent kingdom. Also contains a lot of turn of the century northern California history where I was born and raised. I really love learning how people involved in the arts lived and functioned & the amazing courage it took to travel the world in those times. Very nicely written.

Many thanks to daughter Sue, for this book filled many gaps in my knowledge of missing ships and shipmates. It supplied information on how they died and when. It made me know how lucky I was to survive the war, for I was one of them. I have spent many hours with this wonderful book, and will spend many more. Dale M. Bowen.

Of all the elements of Allied victory in World War II, perhaps the single most vital was American industrial production. The figures speak for themselves: over 5000 new ships carried an average of 8000 tons of cargo for every hour of the war. This unprecedented feat came at a price. Thousands of seamen and over 700 ships went down in attacks by U-boats, aircraft, and mines, in famous invasions and lonely waters.
Their sacrifice is detailed in this impressive record, the entries organized chronologically and listing the date, time, and position at the time of attack, the owner and operator, master, year built, tonnage, draft, cargo, armament, and other details, this information supplemented by a narrative describing the action, casualties, and the fate of the survivors. Highly recommended as essential for the WWII reference shelf, and of interest to all students of that conflict.
