Choose from a range of designs and techniques to provide a professional finishing touch to a quilt in Bonnie K. Browning's Borders & Finishing Touches 2, a collection of ideas which uses an easy paper-folding technique to make all borders fit perfectly. Designs created by Browning use novelty bindings, scalloped edges and more to provide lovely quilt borders. Patterns, color photos, and suggestions for alternate uses of the bindings make for a 'must' for any quilter who wants to add polishing touches.

If you are looking for a good reference for techniques and also for some great patterns for borders, this is the book for you. Also, if you want to make that great Windmill Log Cabin as shown on the opening of Simply Quilts, Bonnie has included all of the instructions to make this quilt. I liked the border patterns especially ... some of them are borders from prizewinning quilters like Linda Roy's Best of Show quilt, Spice of Life, and Gladi Porsche's beautiful appliqued border in Keeping Autumn with Me. Bonnie has designed some new borders too. I'm glad to have it in my library.

In the first 22 pages of The Bride-in-law, I laughed aloud and got tears in my eyes, and I saw a bit of myself in some passages, too. These characters jump off the page. The voice is so lively. This book should be a television movie. Delightful!

Although intended as a companion book to Lincoln's Navy: The Ships, Men and Organization, 1861-65 by Donald L. Canney, this book is also very useful in conjunction with A History of the Confederate Navy by Raimondo Luraghi, which is the definitive book on the CS Navy.

The book is organized by topics (such as shipbuilding, types of ships) and presents these topics in more detail that is generally found in Luraghi's book. While I was hoping that it would include a Jane's-like section with drawings or photographs of every ship, this book is well illustrated. (For even more illustrations see The Confederate Navy - A Pictorial History by Philip Van Doren Stern.)

Highly recommended.

Dr. Still, the dean of Confederate naval historians, is the proud editor of this tour-de-force overview of the Confederate Navy. His contributors include Bob Holcombe of the Confederate Naval Museum, Dave Sullivan, well-known researcher of the Marine Corps in the Civil War, and virtually every authority on the Confederate Navy and the naval Civil War writing today. Well-coordinated, well-illustrated, well done! Small wonder that it's advanced by the Naval Institute Press, which has a tradition of promoting and publishing fine books.

Now in a newly updated and expanded second edition, Electronic Democracy: Using The Internet To Transform American Politics by Graeme Browning (Editorial Director, Internet Policy Institute and Associate Editor for "Federal Computer Week", a key publication for technology news in the federal government) is a fascinating, authoritative, and informative guide to politics on the Internet. The issues and topics covered range from using the World Wide Web for grassroots organization to making one's email to Congress count, to the history and future of online voting and polling, to online campaign resources and projections for the future. Electronic Democracy is a compelling and very highly recommended read for motivated political citizens who want to better understand the profound impacts that the technology of today and tomorrow has upon our nation's government of, by, and for the people!

The Internet has taken on many important roles in recent years as a powerful communications and information medium. Apart from online marketing of businesses, perhaps no other part of our lives has been more influenced by the Internet than that of discussing politics and spiritual matters and making our particular points of view seen and heard by others.

Electronic Democracy (2nd Edition, 2002) written by Graeme Browning offers readers amazing insight of the powerful role that the Internet has played in transforming American politics. At no other time in American history have so many people been able to discuss issues that matter to them the most and actually been able to do something about changing the course of the American political landscape.

Throughout the book readers are presented with actual events - names, dates, places, and circumstances that led other people to take action. Readers will learn about political parties, special interest groups, and common everyday folks who took action to express their points of view and to seek change. The book describes in vivid detail the roles that numerous Websites, discussion groups, and e-mail campaigns had in electing politicians, removing certain politicians from office, changing laws, and affecting other matters of public policy.

The book serves as an excellent guide for becoming politically active in the American political scene - or for that matter, in any country around the world. Readers will learn how to mount their own grassroots campaigns - right from home. They will learn how to organize campaigns, raise funds, present issues, contact people, influence legislation, and to get the word out about their own particular causes - responsibly. They will also learn about the dark side of online activism - the abuses that have taken place to disrupt American culture. As they will read, dirty tricks are still very much a part of politics.

This is one book I couldn't put down easily. It's highly informative, gripping, thought-provoking, and will surely motivate people of all backgrounds and persuasions to become more involved in shaping the direction America will head in. It's must reading for anyone desiring to become an agent of change in American society. This book will help you get started today!

Browning's book should be the first stop for on-line activists. There are so many authors out there proclaiming the internet to be the salvation of democracy that Browning is a voice of moderation. I would recommend this book as your starting point for internet activism.

Great service from the seller. African version of the Christmas Story. An africian-american coworker initially was offended by what she thought was a "white" attempt to make the story sound "black". When she read the introduction and realized the history and research that went into this story she recognized it as part of her "roots" that she was excited to pass on to her own children.

I first purchased this book 14 years ago for my nephew, and I'm back to purchase it for my daughter. It is such a gorgeously written version of the birth of Christ. It's just so lovely and heartfelt. I can't say enough good things about it. It became part of my sister's Christmas tradition with her children, and now it will become part of mine. I'm so glad I found this book again!

I grew up hearing this book (written by my great-grandfather) every christmas morning. It has become a tradition, all of the kids sitting at the feet of our mother as she read the story, her voice flowing over the melody of the words. Often we wouldn't understand a phrase, but she would explain it how her mother had explained it and how the author himself had lovingly explained it to his daughter, my grandmother. Not everyone who has read this book will have the experience I have had in reading it, but all the same, it touches the heart of everyone who has heard it read.

Purchased this book of John Browning's Diaries, in The Old Sperryville Bookshoppe, in August, 2004. I knew John Browning and most of the people he mentions and the events, since I graduated from Rappahannock County High School in 1959. One follows his life chronologically from early boyhood to manhood through an incredibly clear eye for observing people and events. Who would have known all this was going on in his head? Thanks, 'Johnny". I recommend your book highly.

If you want to read a book that you can totally lose yourself in...then John Browning's diary of life in "Flint Hill" is a must.

Beginning as a youth of seven you follow the transition of his life.

It's hard to categorize "Flint Hill". There is the innocence of being a child, the rebellion of adolescence, life as a college student and finally a young man serving his country. And yes, there is even some spice.

I was very fortunate to find Larra years ago. To study with her was quite an experience. She was like no other. I highly recommend her techniques, especially for those who have problems as I did when I came to see her. She could fix problems like magic. I would never rely on a book like this alone though. Use it as a guide to what a good teacher should be doing. The best part about this technique as others have stated, is how natural it is. That is the best way to avoid problems now and in the future.

Larra could still sing beautifully well into her 80's after a long worldwide career. This alone attests to her ability to keep the voice in good health with her methods for a very long time.

A truly great book on voice training
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2003-07-23
This book has so much information I don't know where to start. The author was one of the greats as far as teaching voice and her students have gone on to sing professionally in very demanding capacities without vocal injuries and with beautiful sound - and isn't that what vocal training is all about?

There is a chapter on basic care of the voice - stuff I never knew in 8 years of lessons - don't subject yourself to radical changes in temperature, don't use numbing sprays in your throat, etc. There is another chapter on what to do for vocal nodes, another deals with diction (that chapter alone improved my tone and changed the responation to more in the mask - it was amazing).

For the voice teacher, there are exercises for developing a healthy technique in the students. It covers from beginning to advanced and there are some great chapters on breathing and Alexander Technique - which is taught at most of the Conservatories as a part of the training of serious students of voice. Very informative and has some good resources listed for further research.

Like the guy said in teh review of the previous edition, these books are not bound very well but he woujldn't be so upset about that if it wasn't one of those books you have to keep referring to because the information is so good. If it was a lesser book, then he wouldn't want to open it every 5 minutes and it wouldn't matter what the binding was like.

have to write a tribute to Don Browning's new book, "Marriage and
Modernization: How Globalization Threatens Marriage and What to Do About
It" (Eerdsman, 2003). It's one of the best scholarly books I've ever read
on contemporary marriage. It's a tour de force of historical analysis and
contemporary insights from the social sciences, with a unique emphasis on
what Christianity, in cooperation with other religions, can do to
strengthen marriage in our global age. Don Browning, a noted theologian
and social ethicist at the University of Chicago, may have the best mind in
the marriage movement, and is almost certainly the most widely read. This
book will forever influence my thinking about marriage in the modern world.

Faith and Family
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2003-11-07
Faith and family have survived for millennia, but they have had to undergo tremendous challenges in the recent past. How have the forces of modernization and globalization impacted on the institutions of marriage and family? Is the decline of marriage in the Western world inevitable? What role does religion play in the revitalizing of marriage and family? And how can the fortunes of marriage be reversed in the social, cultural and educational arenas? What models can we look to today which can guide us in our attempt to resurrect the institution of marriage?

These and other profound questions are closely explored in this new volume by a leading ethicist and family educator from the Chicago Divinity School. Political, historical, religious and theological disciplines are carefully woven together in this wide-ranging work. The outcome is a renewed call for the importance of marriage in an age that needs to rediscover why it is such a necessary and crucial institution.

Browning examines how the family has fared over the millennia, and then uses this historical backdrop to see whether and how modernization and marriage can co-exist. He argues that we cannot turn back the clock, and refutes the concept the marriage is a pre-modern institution, incapable of surviving in a modern and postmodern environment.

He points out the now familiar negative impacts of modernization on marriage and family, but also argues that there have been positive benefits as well to arise out of modernization. His thesis is that modernization, at least in its destructive aspects, needs to be curtailed (not eliminated, as if that were possible) while marriage needs to be supported and promoted anew. Somehow the two can and must develop together.

Detailed examinations of the family in different cultures and nations is followed by meaty chapters on the findings of evolutionary psychology, feminism and global trends, and theological defences of marriage. For example the place of marriage and the role of fathers in the thinking of Aquinas and Luther are given close attention. Given that the male alienation from families is perhaps the most important social problem of today, this chapter offers insights and wisdom from generations past which shed considerable light on the way we might proceed on these key social questions today.

The concluding chapters seek to develop a practical theology of marriage and to examine world family strategies. He develops his theology of the family mainly from Christian considerations, although drawing on non-Christian resources as well. Catholic and Protestant considerations are investigated, and brief assessments are made of earlier formulations. He also examples various marriage renewal movements and programs found amongst the different denominations.

Global strategies to renew the institution of marriage are explored, with their strengths and weaknesses examined. From papal encyclicals of the Catholic church to the work of Allan Carlson and the Howard Center in Illinois, a number of marriage renewal projects are discussed. Common themes are drawn out and elaborated upon, and tentative proposals for the way ahead suggested.

Those wanting a "solution" to the "problem" of marriage will not find what they are looking for here. The problems are too complex and the situation too diverse to offer a magic pill of reform. At best Browning can only point to wisdom from the past coupled with insights from the present to guide us into the future.

But the foundational themes addressed here are the right place to begin: families are essential to the well-being of society; marriage is the centerpiece of strong family life; and all levels of society (governmental, cultural, educational and religious) need to contribute to the defence and promotion of the institution of marriage.

A meticulous and scholarly study

Marriage And Modernization: How Globalization Threatens Marriage And What To Do About It by Don S. Browning (Alexander Campbell Professor Emeritus of Ethics and the Social Sciences, University of Chicago Divinity School) is a meticulous and scholarly study of how globalization has impacted traditional matrimonial bonds worldwide (and for the worse) and just what can be done about the deteriorating state of marriage today. Clarion warnings and suggested ways to combat the erosion of marriage fill the pages of this critical, timely, thought-provoking and involving study of the integrity of the family, the nature of the threats it is under from militant feminism and other global trends, and strategies for its defense and continued survival through Christian-oriented cultural, social, and educational strategies.

I'll start by saying I loved this book and found it beautifully written. Every poem from start to finish is note worthy and every poem- impressive. Bob is obviously very talented and through the years I too have branded him a shining-star emerging, a poet, no doubt. I enjoyed this book and would like to single out a few poems that stood out profoundly and beautifully. I loved each poem but thought it best to narrow this down to my personal favorites in Sometime Poet.

Mr. Browning's poem Lunatic was very impressive and set the mood, so to speak, for me. When he claimed "I'll feel the stars shake and scramble away from me, 'til they whirl and cyclone, toss cylinders and ash in their haste to give me room," what a powerful message! Then his poem "Pretty Eyes," impressed me also, with it's yearning, resistance, and overpowering final feeling of strength. "A Reason For Song," was beautiful with it's line "I write for the love of one woman..." wow very impressive. This poem will capture you thoroughly and push you to surrender. "Ready To Vow," was refreshing and simply beautiful and I enjoyed it immensely. "Too Beautiful, Too Beautiful," wow, this poem is beyond words. Let me just say, it will capture your heart with the beautiful verses that flow with ease and intensity. In fact, this poem is one of my favorites; it just stays with you. "A Dark Song" was compelling with its truth and sincerity. His poem "Vaguely" seemed written about someone we have all met, someone seen with our own eyes as well as through his own. "In The Corners, A Name,"again, wow this poem and book will stick with you. I will be recommending this book to everyone I know. Even those who don't normally read poetry will love this book as well. Mr. Browning I hope others recognize your talent and keep discovering your writings for as long as you decide to write! I plan on reading your work!
