intriguing look at the War Between the States, circa 2008

Review Date: 2008-04-02
In Yewville, South Carolina Union soldier Kyle Sherman of Ohio is "shot" while performing at a Civil War reenactment extravaganza. When he meets Dixie Lee Smith, he finds himself attracted to the steel "Jessamine". She is confused because she reciprocates making her traitor to her home state and the Daughters of the Confederacy as she shelters a Sherman descendent even if he is the first farrier she ever met.

As they fall in love, but struggle with trust issues having been hurt and betrayed in relationships before, their mutual pasts arrive. She displays southern hospitality offering a room in her home to his northern belle. However, although Dixie Lee assumes her beloved Yankee will leave town with his former girlfriend, he will not escape without a fight as she vows the south will rise.

DOWN HOME DIXIE is an intriguing look at the War Between the States still fought in 2008 in Dixie Lee's home; as each combatant struggles with giving the peace offering of their respective heart. The story line is fun to follow especially during the heat of battle although the hostilities seem to end with sexual encounters and nothing resolved. Still readers will enjoy the gender fight between Ohio and South Carolina in which love makes for a lasting peace.

Dracula. The socalled masterpiece.

In a world of modern technology and advancements that could ask the questions of God and life there is Dracula. whos mere prescence declares that there are things which could not be explained by science. The book is well written and leaves the reader largely unaware of the terrors lurking in the night. I read this book to get a feel of the vampire roots. i was not let down. That was until the end. when dracula and all the demonic creations were finished off so quickly that it felt more like a cop out rather than the ending to a masterpiece. that i was expecting. On the whole the book was fantastic. Until the end.

Belinda hires on as Chandler Harrington's au pair. After a short time, she finds that she is falling for Chandler which creates a nasty problem. Chandler is accused of kidnapping his own nephew. And it's been Belinda's secret job is to "steal" the boy back when the opportunity presented itself.
Fast moving story after the intro chapters. Well designed characters. Personally, I took off a point for something I felt
was missing in the ending coverage. But it is a great story!

Gardening seventy years ago....
Helpful Votes: 33 out of 34 total.
Review Date: 2003-10-25
Editor and writer Michael Pollen has added Richardson Wright's THE GARDENER'S BED BOOK (first published in 1929) to the Modern Library Garden Series. Although Wright included an entry for every day of the year plus a longer piece for each of the first 11 months, I read about ten pages a night and thus finished it in about a month. Wright was the editor-in-chief of House and Garden for thirty four years. He and his wife were upscale, maintaining homes in New York City and Connecticut. He had a hired gardener to help him mind his acreage and apparently room for pigs and chickens.

Wright says he has not written a "how-to" gardening book. However, he offers mostly useful garden suggestions at the end of each entry (for those in growing zone 5 or 6 in Connecticut), as well as a few bits of wisdom. Wright also wrote a few comments some will find offensive. Vegetarians will find his interaction with two pigs named WEE-WEE and FANNIE a bit painful. (He raised and slaughtered them during the course of the year.) African Americans may object to either one or both of two entries in the latter part of the book. (i.e., Wright and his wife collected antiques and among other items he was searching for a "yard-boy.")

Wright offers some sage advice, such as working off anger by destroying tent caterpillar nests and never giving up on a plant until you've tried it thrice. He also suggests the need for a club for men who have given up golf and taken up gardening which he views as a superior activity. He has some suggestions about tracking the weather using hard to find antiques such as a Dutch weather glass that may be more reliable than "modern" technology. (My bones are more reliable than modern technology!!) He says one should not attempt to garden on torrid days and suggests laying in the sun as long as you can in October. He laments the loss of burning autumn leaves, and fireplaces consuming cedar or apple wood. He and his wife both think of their "top" garden on days when things are tough in NYC. Wright provides insights into the life of a gentleman gardener living in a different era, but much of what he says remains salient.

How-to guide for educators in applying for grants
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2004-11-29
Browning gained her lengthy experience in grant-writing mostly in the field of education aiding school systems to obtain grants for various purposes. The three preliminary questions one has to ask before pursuing specific grants are where is the money? what format does the funding agency require for applying for a grant? and thirdly, just what has to be written to attract serious interest and give one a good chance of getting the grant? Then Browning elaborates on these basics in a user-friendly style advising grant applicants how to follow through on the process of identifying, assessing, and applying for the particular grant. A to-the-point handbook worth the attention of anyone involved in the competitive task of seeking a grant.
