An excellent overview of the evolving movement towards green development. The book is somewhat dated and lacks in-depth coverage in some areas. Regardless effectively gets you into the space.

Throughly presents sustainable land development

This book throughly presents sustainable real estate development. It answers the basic questions of how, what, when, why and who with text and photos illustrating numerous case studies.

It is written for a wide and concerned audience, composed of real estate professionals, financiers and designers. This book is not technical. It is a conceptual book and guides the reader toward sustainable solutions.

This subject is very large and this book is necessarily a summary, which includes recent projects.

This book does not "preach to the choir". It addresses difficult obstacles to the sustainable development paradigm and provides workable solutions.

I am so impressed by this book. It truly has it all. When teaching the 2nd grade, I used her book "Guided Reading, Making it Work." It was great too. Now, as a fourth grade teacher I am glad I found this book. It has background knowledge, implementation strategies and plenty of real-life examples that illustrate how to use the guided reading program in your intermediate classroom. Thank you for this book!

As usual, practical!

The Scholastic Teaching Strategies series has been a reliable, easy-to-use and implement set of books for new and experienced teachers wanting to make changes in their classrooms. As an upper elementary Title I teacher, I'm always on the lookout for making my teaching of reading for struggling readers more effective. There doesn't seem to be much new information out there working with this population. Research seems to suggest that if a child hasn't hooked into reading by third grade, it's lost forever. It seems that the lack of books to help these readers seems to promote that fact.

This book, however, attempts to shed some light on the concept, of bringing Guided Reading groups into the upper elementary classroom. I found the book to be very helpful in examining the role of the teacher and of the students in teaching reading. The author, Mary Schulman, draws on her years of experience, with chapters on setting up the classroom for effective literacy instruction, guidelines for forming the groups, and sample lessons scripted out.

There isn't much missing from the books, possibly other than how to tackle chapter books in these groups, which much of the kids seem to want. I found this book to offer practical ideas that I could easily bring into my classroom. I highly recommend this for anyone wondering about guided reading in the upper elementary grades!

I am frequently asked for the source of particular Muir quotations. Answering these requests is difficult, because many of Muir's best passages were written in different locations. Muir frequently wrote for newspapers and magazines, and then later edited his writings for book publication. So, there are sometimes two or three slightly different versions of the same Muir quote! In addition, some of his most memorable quotes come from his journals, only part of which have ever been published.

One way of finding many of Muir's best quotes is available through this 1988 compilation by Peter Browning. Browning has selected quotations from Muir filling 74 pages, arranged chronologically. Each chapter reflects a particular time period. For example, the first chapter, "So Little a Time, " reflects 1860-1869. The book ends with a chapter reflecting some Muir quotes from as late as 1920, published quite a few years after his death.
The most valuable feature of the book is the index. The 22 page index includes most of the topics that one might think of when thinking of John Muir, for example, "Animals," "Bears," "Earth," "Mountains," "Nature," and "Wilderness." It also contains many topics you might not expect: "civilization," "darkness," "ignorance," "People," and "wives." Then, under each of these topics, you will find the first line or a portion of a phrase which uses that topic in the quotation.

Thus, if you look up "Freedom," in the index, you will find five quotes using that word, indicated by phrases like "boasted f. of the town," or "f. and beauty and peace come in." If you look up the latter, you'll find this relatively-unknown gem from Muir: "Only spread a fern-frond over a man's head, and worldly cares are cast out, and freedom and beauty and peace come in." Browning indicates the source of each quote, this one from both the Atlantic Monthly (January 11,) and My First Summer in the Sierra, with the correct page numbers indicated. Browning also indicates when it was first written, when that can be determined; in this case on June 13, 1869.

With the advent of the World Wide Web, it is now possible to do a search on the John Muir Exhibit Website for the source of many Muir quotes. If you need to find the source of a particular Muir quote, you can do a search on the John Muir Exhibit website with the Sierra Club host server search engine. This allows you to type a key phrase from the quote you are trying to find, and if it is on any of the books Muir wrote which we have online, you should find it.

Even with the Web, Peter Browning's compilation provides a very useful service, allowing keyword searches, and it is also fun just to leaf through the book to read many of Muir's best quotations. Of course, at 98 pages, the book is not exhaustive, and the selection are those preferred by Browning. Some of my favorite quotes are not found in Browning's book. But most of Muir's best quotes can be found in the book, so I recommend it if you have a need to find Muir sources.

This is a very good, readable account of the reign of Justinian and Theodora. The author does a commendable job of providing a concise overview of the political, religious, social and economic issues of this era of the Byzantine empire. Architecture and art are also addressed. The author is clearly knowledgeable about the subject matter and knows how to tell the story in an engaging manner. He is adept at bringing many of the key individuals to life and describing the political, diplomatic and military activities among the Byzantine empire, the Persian empire, and western Europe. A nice set of illustrations and maps are also included. Highly recommended.

Justinian and Theodora is a good book with lots of information. I personally think it should have more about Justinian's early life. It's also just a tad bit confusing at times. Other than that, though, it's a great source for information on not only Justinian and Theodora, but also other well-known and not-so-well-known characters of ancient Rome such as Anastasius, Belisarius, and many others. You would do well to read this narrative if you need information on Justinian and/or Theodora, or are just interested in ancient Rome.

Useful book

The hardest thing with Russian is not the alphabet, nor even the grammar, which is complicated but regular. The hardest thing in my opinion is the vocabulary. It is hard to learn new Russian words and hard to build a decent vocabulary. This book really helps. It lists alphabetically all the most useful Russian roots and shows how the root occurs in a number of different words. Five to ten sentences varying in difficulty illustrate how the same root occurs in different words. With practice it is possible to begin to guess the meaning of unfamiliar words. Moreover by connecting new words to a common root, I found it easier to learn the new words. For those who have already reached a fairly good level of Russian this book is really useful. It takes a good deal of patience to work through the examples, but I think it is worth it as the study of roots may well be the key to a good understanding of Russian. Try to get hold of this book if you can.

This book was meant for the advanced student of Russian to better utilize Russian's rich vocabulary by becoming familiar with roots, prefixes, and suffixes. Using these parts of words makes it much easier to understand words you may not be familiar with. Reading in Russian becomes easier when you know roots, prefixes, and suffixes. I used this book in more than one Russian class in college and I recommend it. It does it's job. It's not fancy and the layout could use some improvement (of course, I have the July 2000 spiral-bound edition), but it does the job.

The poet of dramatic monologue

Review Date: 2004-11-11
This is the opening of one of Browning's most well- known poems "Rabbi Ben Ezra"
Grow old along with me!
The best is yet to be,
The last of life, for which the first was made:
Our times are in His hand
Who saith ' A whole I planned,
Youth shows but half; trust God: see all,
nor be afraid!'

Browning is a poet of the inner life. His dramatic monologues are in the words of F.B. Pinion the editor of the Collins Edition of ' Dramatis Personae' centered on ' the thought- processes and mental outlook of his characters than in dramatic action" The
poems are rich in consideration of the moral and religious problems of his time. Lovers of poetry and students of human relationships can certainly be enriched by the reading of these poems.

I must say, and this happens very often, I got a little emotionally attached to one of the characters, and because of that I read the last couple of pages reluctantly; but that's a good sign. That means Ms. Sparrow developed her characters well. Well developed characters is always a sign of a good book to me; I actually wept for the sake of a fictional character's well being. If you read the book you'll know who I'm talking about (it's not Tony, by the way). I recommend it to the highest degree because its' enjoyable, I read it in a day and a half, and I know others will enjoy it.

Very nice - enjoyed reading it immensely. A compact and lovely story of a woman who makes step by step changes in her life. The hatred and at last the romance between Emma and Jack has a nice touch. If you know how an office works you will enjoy this book even more.
Hope to hear from Ms. Sparrow again. :-)

Peach Street Follies is a charming tale of family life and love that rings with the incomparable warmth of truth. Lyndsey and Emily Pennington are sisters who live happily with their grandparents and Rosie, the family dog. Papa and Nana help the girls make every day a new adventure and the reader feels pulled into this loving family as the children go on a trip to the county fair ... hatch a plot to catch the tooth fairy at work ... even find a baby in a little red wagon on their doorstep. I found myself mentally in a mud puddle with the children on a special rainy day, and shivering with child-like excitement at the mysterious happenings during an overnight camp-out. When the girls and Nana create a very happy snowy-day birthday for a young friend, one almost tastes that first oh-so-delicious lick of chocolate frosting right off the beaters.

Susan Browning Pennington has created a warm and welcoming world that will be enjoyed by the young and the young-at-heart. This reader felt herself pulled cozily into the arms of a loving family. Pennington took me back to a childhood I thought mostly forgotten, and helped me remember what it was like to find adventure in every moment, and something exciting in every new day.

Good job, Susan!

This book is definitely a five star book. I read this book to my son and we both enjoyed every page. Mrs. Pennington was not only able to capture my attention, but take me back to a time when children were more entertained by spending time with family instead of watching tv or playing video games. Mrs. Pennington to me is portrayed as someone that is loving and has plenty of wisdom to share.

Ian Browning's Petra is longwinded, out of date and at times completely wrong. It does, however, contain some of the reconstruction illustrations of the ancient Nabataean capital ever done. Browning also devotes a sizable portion of the book to presenting the inhabitants of this ancient commercial capital as living breathing people. This is more than just guidebook and visitors to Petra have much to thank Browning for. The book is still readily available in Petra, should you get the opportunity to visit the enchanting and magical "rose red city, half as old as time."

Lacey Shaw has finally seen the light and dumped her husband Bunny Shaw. A habitual rodeo rider. He's too yound and immature to settle down.

She has driven their Winnebago to Mosquito, Texas to visit the grave of her first-born twin daughter. There she learns that Garth Colquitt is looking for a nanny for his 10 month old daughter. She sure hopes to land the job and find a place to rest at where Bunny won't find her and Michelle.

Garth and his brother Cody are trying to run their ranch and take care of Ashley Anne at the same time. They keep losing nannies. Garth has lost his wife 9 months ago and probably would have lost it if it hadn't been for his little daughter.

Cody is in love with Kim and she wants him to relocate to Wichata Falls and leave the ranch. Lonliness, lack of people, just not her style.

Follow the story closely and see what happens when Garth realizes that Michelle and Ashley Anne are twins. When the babies come down with chicken pox and then so does Garth. Oh,my!

Donna, the pediatrician, is interested in Garth and he apparently has been seeing her.
Ah, but then, during one of Cody and Kim's fights, the babies disappear. Oh, yeah, Bunny shows up. What a dork.

Thoroughly enticely romance except that Lacey is a bit wishy-washy about falling in love. Yup! goes home to mama.

You will love the rest. [I hope!]

Definitely recommended -- enjoy! [Lacey sure is strange.]
