Nice little book of days based loosely on the Book of Common Prayer.
Put it in the spare bedroom as something to read in the morning before getting up for that first cup of coffee.

As the other reviewers note, the meditations are very insightful and inspiring. The format is very similar to the "Forward Day by Day" devotional guide with which most Episcopalians are familiar. Instead of Bible verses at the top of each day's entry, however, there are short excerpts from the Book of Common Prayer. You can turn to the BCP for the full text of the collects, rituals, and Psalms, but references are scattered throughout the prayer book. I was hoping for something that was a little more of an organized guidebook to the BCP, with the added benefit of devotions.

Although these daily meditations are based on the Episcopalian "Book of Common Prayer" they are very universal in scope and should appeal to all faiths.

This book serves as a financial journal for those who need a little help and structure to manage their expenses. I have been using this system for two years. I started with $10,000 in debt and paid it off within a year. This program forces you to really look at how much you will need for your fixed expenses and how much you really spend on everyday items. I gave this book to all of my girlfriends for Christmas last year!

Chris Browning has designed a simple savings plan that works. I had my wife, Barbara, read the book. We both agreed to use the system. Now we have a mutually agreed upon way to save money each month and it is working. Over the last 10 months we have saved approximately 15% of our combined incomes. All I can say is just buy the book and do it!

This book should be called the Simple Savings System. I was really afraid of learning how to manage my money, but this book helped me understand where all my money was going. I had no idea I was spending so much on movies, books, and eating out...wow! Anyway, this book helped me get back on track. I actually have saved over $5,000 in the first 10 months. The book is simple and fun to use. I will be sending a copy to all my friends this Christmas.

Stranger Truths Than Poetry
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-05-14
Those who recall the Barretts of Wimpole Street may remember a pairing of upper echelon Victorian poets, Elizabeth Barrett and Robert Browning, who lived a life together as strange as anything in their poetry. So strange, in fact, as to have rather fallen out of history, as their fashion faded, as if too big or awkward for the flow of it. Today the fame of the Brownings, in life and in verse, is no longer common currency in the popular fancy or other than among specialists, but in their day they were the talk of the town, in London and Florence, at least, and deservedly so.

In brief, their story ran like this: She was the London home-bound invalid daughter of a father who, from a Jamaican slave-owning planter family, eccentrically refused to let any of his many offspring marry and bear children, on threat of disinheritance, apparently, it is suggested, because of a suspicion of dark slave-blood in his family tree and a fear of perpetuating it. Her sequestered illness, whatever it may have been, never adequately diagnosed, apparently, left her with nothing worthwhile in her fallow young life but an urge to express her spirit through a marvellous poetic gift, which, magnified by the mystery swirling around her personal life, made her famous enough to attract the infatuated attention of another poet, Robert Browning, who thus fell in love with her at second hand, sought out and courted her in secrecy, won her heart and eloped with her to Italy, where they lived out their marriage safe from her wealthy and powerful father's wrath. In Italy both their love and their poetry flourished, bringing fame, the fellowship of the Euro-American cultural cogniscenti of the age and, eventually, a living, to the pair of them, and in due time a beautiful healthy son to dote upon. Theirs was, in short, a love story for the ages, with perils, pathos and passion enough and to spare. In other words, even in Victorian times, you couldn't have scripted such stuff as this, at least not credibly.

Not that life was all lollipops and roses for the Brownings, of course. They lived through all the painful European political disruptions of the Revolution of 1848, and she, as lady poets seem so prodigally inclined to do, died young, in her mid-fifties in 1861, of her mysterious lifelong illness. Widower Robert Browning went back to England after that, trying, unsuccessfully to make a proper Englishman out of their "Italian" son, who expatriated himself back to Italy as soon as his father died.

The story is a fascinating one, which this book handles admirably, for all that I am ill qualified to comment much upon either the Brownings or their poetry, he famous mainly for his DRAMATIS PERSONAE and she for her SONNETS FROM THE PORTUGESE and her AURORA LEIGH, a Victorian romance written entirely in iambic pentameter, making it the longest poem in the English language. It was in fact AURORA LEIGH which drew me into a curiosity about the Brownings, merely in the course of doing some research on Emily Dickinson, who owned that book as one of her particular favorites. It was a sidetrack, but an interesting and rewarding one, and I can highly recommend the book.

I picked up this book out of a desire to learn more about the lives and love of the Brownings. I had merely intended to skan through the pages, expecting yet another boring biography, but I was surprised.

Ms. Markus had done a wonderful job in making the characters come to life for me, and she had achieved this without adding a trace of fiction. Her extensive research blended in so well with her writing that I had no trouble following along. In fact, I found it so interesting that I ended up reading the entire book, from beginning to end.

I can only hope that the romance of Robert and Elizabeth will forever live through this brilliant biography!

A Romantic Story

The romantic story of 2 poets who fell in love at mid-life, married, escaped to Italy, and lived happily for 15 years until Elizabeth's death. The author discusses the lives of the poets amongst their friends, acquaintances, other writers, & artists in Italy where living was less expensive and the climate more favorable. There are many cute stories about their son Pen and how the couple disagreed over various aspects of his unbringing. Also touched upon are the previous generations of both the Barretts and the Brownings and their history in Jamaica. Besides learning about the the Brownings, this book gives you a good feel of what life was like in the middle 19th century. Lots of B&W illustrations throughout the book.

A wonderful biography of a marriage between two genius poets, Dared and Done drew me in with such force and speed that I was almost glad of being ill myself so as to have an excuse to stay in bed and finish it. Markus has managed to convey her own excitement at relating such an intriguing story and did what a good author should do - made me want to delve into these poets' lives and their poetry even more.

Some of the speculation I did not agree with such as EBB's father not wanting his children to marry because of possible African blood. The birth of Pen Browning should have eradicated that concern. We may never understand the strange, cruel elder Barrett and fortunately, Dared and Done doesn't hinge on the theory. I did want to know more about the conniving Sophia Eckley - her cause of death for example, since she played such a huge role in the Browning marriage. I was also curious about EBB's illness - oddly, we never do get a diagnosis - only her maintenance cure of morphine and ether.

Remarkably, EBB had the greater reputation as a poet during the Barrett-Browning marriage with Robert Browning for many years being considered the lesser poet. That can make for trouble in the most loving of marriages and re-witnessing the devotion these two gifted poets demonstrated repeatedly is both exceptional and inspiring.

A very nice bio into the life and poetry of immortal lovers

The Brownings hold a special place in my world, especially EBB. "Sonnets From The Portuguese" speaks with the eloquence, dignity and passion of the human ideal behind the flaws and veils of life and lovers (both RB and EBB's poetry are available on disc). Especially the last ten sonnets. EBB wrote not only about love and lovers, but about the human condition. She lived an insulated life yet was by nature a worldly and sophisticated soul. RB struggled with his inability to support his family, living off of EBB's inheritance annuity. Through this biography I was better able to appreciate his humaness and struggle, though I am still inclined toward EBB and her poetry. They were the sum of many contradictions, the big one being that they were so English (formal and proper) yet Bohemian in their liberal thinking. Both lovers and artists in the same household, in the same relationship, in the same struggle to survive and create (they do remind me of John Lennon and Yoko Ono's struggle and life together). While the book probably told the whole story, at least as much as a biographer can research and reveal, I still felt something lacking. I wanted the story to go on a little longer, a little deeper. I knew quite a bit about EBB before I began the book, I learned much more about her heritage and conflicts by reading this biography. My appreciation is much greater. It's a shame that we Moderns let so much of our heritage lay dormat (literaturewise) in the vaults of the "old days". To sip and savour the lives and poetry of the past is something we should cherish and celebrate. This book points in that direction. I strongly recommend this to all lovers of RB & EBB and poetry.

Wanting in accuracy....

This book has some okay pictures and covers the major milestones of Browning, but there were inaccuracies which seem to make the remaining information suspect. For example, one old photograph in the "Shotguns" chapter directed the reader to notice a particular type of shotgun in the hands one of the hunters in the picture. Unfortunately, the individual in the picture is clearly in possesion of a Remington Model 81 rifle. I sent this one back and am still looking for a more reliable and authoritative guide to Mr. Brownings legacy.

David Miller, the author of this excellent book, is a former British military officer and writer for Janes and other military publishers. His expertise, graceful style, and thorough research are attractively packaged in this beautifully illustrated book on John M. Browning and the firearms he designed.

The book itself has the slick eye-appeal of something designed for a coffee table and its photography is first-rate and full color. In fact, it's almost too pretty to take very seriously.

The narrative, however, is worth the price of the book. Miller has covered all his bases in his research, from the LDS archives in Salt Lake City, Utah, to the factory archives of FN in Herstal, Belgium.

Miller does an impressive job of combining a biography of John M. Browning with a description of the family of firearms he designed, including a couple (like the M-2 .50 caliber machine gun) which are still in use today by American soldiers their allies around the world today. Browning was a patriot and would doubtless be pleased to know the high regard in which some of his firearms are held by American soldiers, police officers and sportsmen.

I enjoyed this book and gave it five stars. If you're interested in firearms and their development, or in Browning's designs, you will like this book. The only thing it lacks is a good bibliography.

photographic history of the famed Browning Firearms

Review Date: 2006-12-01
The Browning gun design firm was influential in the field of American firearms ever since it was founded in Utah in 1855. For the most part, the history of Browning Firearms is about the founder's son, John Browning (1855-1926), who came into the business in the latter 1800s and headed it for decades until his death. John sold designs for hundreds of firearms to companies which then manufactured them in quantity. Because of the popularity of the Browning firearms both in their design and performance, copies of them were produced by other manufacturers; but these were inferior to authentic Brownings. Beyond the pistols, rifles, and shotguns familiar to many, Browning designed machine guns and automatic rifles for the military since the 1890s, and also knives for outdoorsmen. A complete, mostly photographic, introduction to the history of the famed Browning Firearms and the variety of its products.

I think that this was a hilarious book. I would suggest it to anyone with any sense of humor- sarcastic or literal! I found this book to be extremely helpful with the basic things in life- such as how to use a knife and fork, how to die, how to swim (2nd best in the book!), or how to do extreme sports (Definitely the funniest). Each topic was written with an amazing eye to the readability. This is a must read for the light hearted and happy person. Happy Reading!!

"How to laugh", "how to sit", "how to drink"...These CD's were about "how to" laugh at everything in life. This is a comical look at the small things in life. This was a delighfully entertaining book. I originally 'borrowed' it from my public library. I immediately purchased afterward.

This is not a serious 'how to' book. Obviously in a section on "how to sit" the author makes casual observances about these little things in life and how we do them with specific intent and we don't even know it. This is not intended to be a psychological analysis of everything we do, instead pokes fun at everything we do. While not a book on etiquette, Guy Browning seems to identify the 'do's' and don'ts' of eating, drinking, peeing, sitting, stratching, etc. based on subconscience thoughts we all have about ourselves, or what others might think about us. Maybe good thoughts. Maybe bad. All truly inciteful and humorous.

The tidbits are funny because for the most part they are true. I laughed out loud several times. The Audio CD version is 5.5 hrs. It was a delight to listen to one a day. It's too much for one sitting, but I looked forward to it each evening.

For those like me in the US, we also get an english vocabulary lesson, as many of the words I have never used myself, though I know what Guy Browning meant. The british accent is extremely easy to understand.

Audio Version (CD)- British actor Simon Vance read the book impecably and is a comedian in his own right.

Silly humor mixed with a little dry humor though all of it very easy to understand. I will try some more from this author.

Hilarious!! Try it!!

This is not really about how to survive life's small challenges, which may be why one other reviewer was so disappointed. Instead, it's about HOW TO MAKE YOU LAUGH! It's hilarious. If you like Dave Barry, you'll love this, too. Almost every single sentence is packed with funniness. That's why the chapters are so short--every sentence counts. Guy Browning is a very witty fellow, but also very down-to-earth. This would be a great Christmas/Birthday present for any literate guy with a sense of humor.

For those who have never done paper quilling before, I would recommend Paper Quilling For the First Time by Alli Bartkowski. For those who would like to see paper quilling raised to an art form by a master, I would recommend The Art of Paper Quilling by Claire Sun-ok Choi. For card crafters who want to incorporate paper quilling to their handmade cards, this book is it. It's full of card making ideas using paper quilling along with other commonly used card crafting elements such as rubber stamps, paper punches, chipboards, patterned papers, ribbons, brads, etc. I especially love the frogs!

This is a true story about the author's life and landscaping a lovely homestead in Weschester Co., NY. Ms. Browning can turn a pretty phrase and she certainly did a lot with her property. I don't know...parts were just too precious: her boyfriend throughout is the True Love; yes, 230 pages of that. The contractors who did the actual work were the Helpful Men. A little on the condescending side, for my taste. On and on through many other cutesy titles and Capitalized Names...Oh Dear! Line drawings are very well done and highlight the text.

Sure, there's some great gardening advice in here, but mostly it's a charming story. The neighbors, the kids, the fix-it men, the romantic crush. I got sucked right in. You're bound to recognize your own plot of land, as well as your own suburban existence. And Dominique Browning is a gorgeous writer, with a great sense of humor. You don't need to know a thing about gardening to enjoy this terrific book.

I had read a review of her book in the NYTimes and am a fan of the magazine she edits, so I bought the book. I fell in love with the story of collapse, confusion and renewal. Frankly the metaphor of the garden served as many a problem in one's own life. Wrap it all up in gorgeous prose and a compelling (yes! she makes a garden wall collapse and the ensuing drama exciting!) story and I had a book , I couldn't put down. Romantic and sometimes funny it's a good read for the gardener and non-gardener alike.

Living with a garden in suburbia
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2007-06-23
This book had me from the start, when Dominique describes how an old retaining wall collapses in her yard, floods the area and destroys many of her shrubs and flowers. The ensuing work afterwards is this book, as she goes from grief over the collapse (which she compares to her divorce) to acceptance and then renewal (as with her boyfriend TrueLove). While she has the wall rebuilt, she reflects on incidents with her former husband and children in the house, and especially the garden, and how over the years she still holds on to all the memories, even as certain trees are diagnosed with deadly diseases.

This small garden, filled with raccoons, oppossums, birds and wayyward teens is the story of life in suburbia. Stubborn neighbors, messy neighbors, nosy neighbors and helpful neighbors are all part of the deal of living in suburbia. The trees and flowers are just flavorings. But then there are memories of the growing boys, former pets, old trees, dying trees, annoying rusty old vehicles from the neighbors, and menacing trees hanging over from the obstinate neighbors. What homeowner hasn't had to deal with any of this?

This book is a delight even for the non-gardener. It's a perfect gift for the avid gardener who's been tending to the same garden for many years.

Inspiration for Suburban Transplants

Review Date: 2005-04-25
As a recent transplant to suburbia and a novice gardener, I found comfort and inspiration in Browning's memoir. Her depictions of her garden-in-progress are fascinating. At times her garden seems enchanted, barely controllable, taking on a life of its own. (Especially that wisteria! I'm now warily eyeing my own twig of wisteria, which is sending out a few ominous shoots). Browning finds the extraordinary just steps away from her door. Passages about a simple pathway or a stand of trees are mesmerizing to read about. I was reminded of growing up in suburbia and finding wonder and mystery in yards that today -- or at least before reading "Paths of Desire" -- I might view as unremarkable. Browning has helped me rediscover some of that sense of wonder in the suburban landscape, and I no longer lament my retreat from the city. Her book has shown me how my own yard is a canvas filled with possibility, and yet to some degree it will always elude my control -- an idea that fascinates me even more.

Browning's prose style -- at times restrained, at other times lyrical, and often shot through with whimsy -- is as lovely as her garden.

From the moment a computer hacker is beheaded by a cunning, computer assisted demon until the very end, Browning creates page turning suspense. The author's characters are vivid, right down to Pam, the strong willed "warrior woman" who battles the crafty and very formidable villain, Verstig to Kevin and Thomas who are transported to different "enclaves." The novel was action packed as well, never a dull moment....it was Indiana Jones meets the internet age and the Exorcist. Cobras, mambas, all kinds of magic....it would also please X-files fans as well. I would highly recommend this story. It's well crafted, and Browning's writing has a really nice flow to it. I would write more about the plot, but I wouldn't want to spoil it for the reader. Read this book, and enjoy.

As an avid reader of fantasy fiction, and only fantasy fiction, I was somewhat hesitant when I saw Wired up in the bookstore. The cover art appeared to place it with magic, but the title, well, that was another story. The back cover informed me that this book was a mix between runic magiks, a system in which symbols, or runes, are used to draw powers from outerplanar systems into our world, and computer hacking and software manipulation. It was a perfect mix.

The blend was gorgeous, a smooth transition between seemingly entirely opposing schools of writing within the fiction genre. Normally I am reserved in my opinions about books, but this one fits a niche that I have found otherwise entirely unexplored, one perfect for me and countless other readers whose computers are a large part of their lives.

Apologies for gushing, but the words written here are well deserved. I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone whose reading material is lacking the ¡¥kick¡¦ that Wired so effectively delivers. Happy Reading!

Someone has discovered the ultimate in copy protection. Try to break into a programs code and a demonic face appears on your monitor, inviting you to pay or have your face ripped off. And if you don't pay... Following a bloody trail of corpses with missing faces, the police are baffled, and one Boston detective, Mike Baldwin, decides to break with tradition. He calls on an old friend, Pam Whitby, who, with Kevin McKinley, runs a computer security and witchcraft consulting firm.

What ensues is a hair-raising hit and run battle with a black mage of extraordinary powers, who can unless demons and send spells via telephone. In addition to his plans to use computer games to find sacrifices, their opponent seems to have a personal axe to grind as well. While Kevin is an accomplished magician on his own, he is completely outclassed by this master, and the team must rely on their wits to overcome their disadvantage.

The action involves everything from inter-dimensional travel to counter-espionage in a unique mix of hi-tech and dark magic. T. G. Browning's primary emphasis is the action, of course, but the author fills in the spaces with quick dialog and enough character development to hold the reader's attention in the infrequent lulls between face rippings and house meltings.

This turned out to be a better story than I had any right to expect. As the first volume of a proposed trilogy, this bodes well for future reading. There is a prequel story, which does play in the events in `Wired,' but reading it first is not really necessary. Although, based on this effort it would be worth tracking down,

I have to confess, generally I'm not much for magic. I'm more of a hard SF kind of person, Fantasy is usually a little too mushy and twinkly_around_the_edges for my tastes. "Wired" however, is the exception.

Set in a workaday kind of world that I immediately recognized and felt comfortable in, "Wired" starts off as a 'normal' cyberspace novel with hackers hacking and the rest of the world dealing with the residue. Until a demon appears and pull somebody's head off, that is. Check 'normal' at the door, you won't be needing it for the rest of the ride.

Once you're hooked (and it happens fast), you're drawn into a world where magic is just a part of the software mix and "safe computing" takes on a whole new meaning. From then on, putting the book down becomes a real problem.

I highly recommend this excellent novel to anyone who enjoys SF, Fantasy, or just a very good read. And of course, Thanks to T.G. Browning. These days when I reach for that power button in the morning, I have to pause for just a moment and check my amulets.

This book is a must not only for the longtime Browning collector but the novice buyer as well. It contains detailed explanations of all different Browing firearms, including the models and grades of each type. In addition there is also a good bit of information on Browning's history, proof marks and seriel numbers just to name a few of the catagories this book touches on. I have found it an excellent resource.

I have been collecting Browning guns for a few years. I have tried to find out as much as I can about each gun I acquire. Not until I got this book did I get the real history behind each gun. This book is a great guide on finding out all there is to know about Browning guns and Browning history. I don't know how I got this far without this book. It even contains old orginal adds and instructions books! The book covers every possible detail. If you are a Browning fan this book is a must.

I first saw this book at the public library and fell in love. The photos are wonderful and illustrate the process of creating beautiful gift baskets. Extensive directions are given and supply lists. I think that I could even replicate some of the gift baskets, and I am not that creative.

I really enjoyed this book, there we great ideas and beautiful photos of the completed basket. My only complaint (if I should call it that) is that there is so much homemade things. As A new business I am concerned about putting homemade items such as cookies, breads, soaps and bath stuff due to legal issues.

Like this book, wish the products were available in the U.S.

I would have to say this book, unlike so many others, offers great ideas for modifying ordinary containers to create beautiful, unique receptacles for gift items. The author seems to be a jack-of-all-trades as she takes gifting to a whole new level. She not only enhances the baskets with paint, embellishments, weaving, floral design...etc., but she makes some of the gift products herself. The reader is offered a plethora of information from whitewashing baskets to manufacturing homemade soaps to be used as basket fillers. Her baskets are lovely and inspiring. My disappointment lies in the roadblocks I encountered in my attempt to purchase some of the items needed to re-create her baskets. I searched far and wide for a product she calls "floral foam," which will serve as an adhesive for the application of dried or silk flowers to a basket without that messy glue-gun string effect. I believe the author resides in the UK and her resource list suggests that her products originate there. My web resources came up short and I have yet to put her directions to the test.
All in all, this book is a great purchase if you are looking for basket ideas. She certainly motivates the reader to take basket design one step further.

"Eye candy" was my initial impression as I slowly consumed this book. Like me, you'll be pleased with the visuals that encourage you to start making gift baskets right away.

Browning introduces you to the "tools of the trade" and then shares ideas for different touches to add to the basket before filling it with gifts and snacks. This is mainly a technique for hobbyists, as professional gift basket designers have little time to embellish each vessel. The bowmaking tutorial is also a plus.

There are many recipes found throughout the book. Most of us enjoy adding homemade items when making gift baskets for fun, rather than just adding products found through wholesale sources, the main focus when making them for profit.

You'll love the designs -- especially pamper, baby bath, and housewarming -- three regularly-requested themes in the gift basket industry.
