Browning Books

I really like this book. It is a compilation of presentations from 20 of the country's best college coaches of how to run their base offense. Each coach tells not only how to run the offense, but why. There is a significant amount of detail in the 10 pages or so each coach has from splits, to handling 3 and 5 technique defenders, to blocking assignments. Some even explain how much time they allot in practice to various techniques and what key concepts they need the players to learn. For example, on page 56, there is a paragraph that explains what the tight end does on his first and second steps.

The book is not as dry as it may sound. These are presentations that have been transcribed and most coaches start and/or end with a story or tell about something meaningful to them.

I especially enjoyed Prof. Berry's pithy musings about railroads and breastmilk, a connection many of us have long pondered but have never dared utter.

If you can't see the cover very well--I have it in my hand right now--it's two snowflakes landing on a road sign. With the degrading quality of poetry published right now, this is a refreshing tall glass of water. I am very impressed.

When her sister insists that Erica Strong take a makeover vacation, Erica reluctantly takes the time from her job as an investment banker--she's always had a fantasy about a cowboy lover and a makeover ranch sounds like the perfect time to fulfil that fantasy. Handsome cowboy Hank seems to fit the bill, even though he comes with a baby and Erica has never been a baby kind of person. In fact, Erica has never been the pretty kind either.

Hank doesn't find Erica simply pretty, he's blow away by the woman. And Hank had been pretty resistant to women. Of course, what Erica doesn't know is that Hank has a secret--a secret that means that her simple fantasy may backfire--or turn into a lot more than a fling.

Author Pamela Browing takes the familiar hooks of mistaken identity and matchmaking and makes them fresh and new. The matchmaking ghost-priest is a cute touch, accompanied as he is by a talking cat who can use his voice but doesn't always say what the priest wants him to. Erica and Hank are both sympathetic and interesting characters trying to make their way through a life that has, so far, fallen far short of their fantasies. The matching fantasies is also a cute touch.

Leave it to Marie to define "Collage", and explain in detail all of the goods that goes into them.

As a beginning "altered art", "collage" artist, I am happy with her book more than any other because she tells me what to use, and how to use it!

Chell explicates the major poetry and offers a Bergsonian, time-centered conceptual window that 1)illuminates individual poems, 2)demonstrates the coherence and unity of the Browning oeuvre, 3) places Browning in the modern tradition, refuting Ezra Pound's later position in "The Cantos" that embracing a modernist aesthetic required that he distance himself from Browning and "Sordello."

The analyses of "Childe Roland" and "Pompilia" (from "The Ring") are notable for their insight and cogency, though perhaps this concentrated volume is at its best in the analysis of the notoriously difficult if not impenetrable "Sordello." Drawing on post-structuralist theory and deconstruction, Chell's close reading of the poem brings to light the tension between spatial simultaneity and temporal succession that informs the text's multi-layered discourse at thematic as well as structural levels. The Browning of Chell's study is more than a superior rhetorician: he emerges as an acute observer and primary shaper of the landscape of human consciousness.

These recipes are low fat and low calorie but extremely YUMMY! I happened to catch the author, Stacey Pardue, on TV in Monroe, Louisiana while there on business. She made a glorious looking low fat Mexican dish, so I rushed out an order for her book. The Low Fat Taco Soup Recipe on page 79 is only 125 calories per cup and 1 cup is completely filling for a complete meal. Even my husband likes her low fat recipes! After fixing the low fat taco soup for friends, they ordered this book too! Stacey has taken many of the Southern recipes that I remember my mamma making and make the low fat substitutions for me. I never knew low fat could taste so good!

This is a really lucid and engrossing guide to the poet and her times. The book makes an excellent job of weaving the verse into the wider historical and political context of 19th England. Detailed readings of her work help to explore and sometimes explode the myths that have collected around Barrett Browning, offering a portrait of the artist as a free thinker whose ideas still have the power to question the dominant ideologies of our time. Although theoretically informed, the book does not get mired in long expositions of Foucault or Derrida but rather sticks closely to a detailed account of the work and its contexts. The book is essential reading for anyone studying 19th century English literature and will be of general interest to anyone who would like to know more about the poet.

With Economics gaining a greater spotlight in our world, a basic understanding of it is necessary to be an active and informed participant in society. As a high school student with a special interest in economics because of recent waves of discontent washing over the world in the form of protests against free trade and international bodies, I found this text a good general introduction to economics that would allow me to better understand some of the complaints of said protestors. Although the book is certainly dated, it holds up remarkably well - it discusses many current issues from the American perspective that are as relevant today (OPEC, NAFTA, etc.) as they were when the book was written. The special focus on sustainable development and policy that is alternative to the mainstream growth-oriented view is also appreciated. The book is able to have an alternative view while still maintaining the pretense of objectivity. I felt that the book did not focus enough on some of the recent complaints directed towards trade policy such as arguments related to the so-called 'race to the bottom'. Additionally, it could have used the term 'deflation' more and specifically addressed issues relating to deflation as an aside to discussions of recession. Finally, I would have liked to have seen an expanded discussion of competition policy. That said, my wishes for an expanded text are not jeers, but instead cheers. As a high school student, this work has done an excellent job of engendering an interest in the subject. Because I am interested (I read this book in preparation for an Economics course that I will take in an upcoming year) I am demanding a greater and more expansive book. This book, as a fast-paced and broad-based introduction to the discipline is highly recommended for its readability and ability to simplify complex concepts. It has successfully avoided that trap of being dry, dull and overly detail-oriented that so many other introductions fall into, and has given me an interest in furthering this pursuit and learning more.

The Author knows that Faith-based work is not just pie-in-the-sky but the accomplishment of the work is based on concrete skills. This is a great book to get the skills you need to make a difference where you are. Let's face it -- there are not many places you can go to learn how to do faith based work -- so this book is worth the investment!
