This is a decent Algebra II book. The examples are comprehensive and detailed, but sometimes I couldn't follow with the examples. The easy, medium, and hard problems are all excellent. I would recommend this book to future algebra students.

Faithful to the highest standards of traditional math, this rigorous and thorough tour of algebra and trigonometry is presented with meticulous clarity. It is an invaluable tool in its own right, but is especially worthwhile in preparation for advancing to upper level math concepts. The sections dedicated to word problems have particularly relevant real world applications, addressing the "When are we ever gonna have to use this?" issue with convincing examples. The organization is intelligent, uncluttered, and methodical. As a resource, this volume represents an investment of substantial educational merit, and uncompromising quality.

As a teacher of mathematics I have used a number of different algebra texts and evaluated many others. After an extensive search for a text that would meet the needs of students preparing for college-level mathematics, I decided that this book had no equal. The exposition is both clear and rigorous, and the problems are of real mathematical depth without being too difficult for most students. One of the best aspects of the book is the extensive drill on algebra skills included in every section.

I used this book (when it was written by Mary P. Dolciani) in 1973-74 as a junior in high school and loved it. The recent revisions continue the excellence of Dolciani and the series. The theory is sound and the examples are easy to follow. Especially important is the numerous exercises graded in difficulty that help the student master the material. This book actually makes students THINK and does not spoon feed the material.

I can't say enough great things about this text. My school district uses this text for the honors tract (9th/10th grades) but uses another text for the "regular" 11th grade Algebra II sequence. I feel this is unfortunate because all students can benefit from the rigors of this book.

A Wake-up Call on the Dangers of Environmental Poisoning
Helpful Votes: 13 out of 13 total.
Review Date: 1998-01-01
The author presents well-documented material on a very current controversial subject which is affecting l5% of the population severely, and many more in lesser degrees; creating debillitating illness in productive members of society, causing them to become disabled and unemployed. The tragedy of the message is poignantly spelled out by the author, revealing the AMA's denial of the diagnosis of MCS, which contributes to the distress of patients who must suffer through contempt and lack of care by medical doctors who are influenced by economic dictates and refuse to treat the complex patient. This book is a blessing for MCS sufferers, since it offers hope that it will alert proper politicians and governmental officials to address this issue properly, offer medical care to the Veterans of the Gulf War Syndrome, and implement legislation to prevent further chemical poisoning in our public indoor environment. I highly recommend this book for everyone, to instill awareness of the dangers of chemicals in our environment. This is a very thorough documentation on the subject of Multiple Chemical Sensitivity.

It's a shame this indispensable book has gone out of print because it is one of the best I have read on the subject. Environmental allergies, Sick Building Syndrome, Gulf War Syndrome, or Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS) is the subject at hand, and I think it one of the most important subjects of our time. MCS, despite some doctor's insistence that it does not exist, affects every living thing on Earth. An estimated 40 million Americans already show clear and obvious signs of this illness. The rest of us are undoubtedly affected in less obvious ways. We cannot afford to ignore this problem.

One of the most fascinating parts of this book, which has stuck in my memory for a number of years, is descriptions and interviews with the sickest people alive with MCS. The descriptions of their symptoms and the great lengths they must go to just to try to live their lives is tragic and fascinating and a warning to us all.

Even though you may not know how chemical poisoning is affecting you, it almost certainly is. Sticking our collective heads in the sand will not help us, and will almost certainly allow things to get much worse before they get better. Inform yourself and read this book.

Peter Radetsky has experience writing popular science books, and this one is very readable. He interviews a variety of sick people, scientists, doctors, and psychiatrists with a wide range of opinions on the subject. Though the role of infectious pathogens is fairly well understood these days, the role of toxicity has been almost completely ignored by modern science and allopathic medicine. This topic must blow open, sooner or later. In the meantime, we can inform ourselves and take a tip from the sickest among us. We do not need to wait for mainstream science and medicine to acknowledge or solve problems before we act to protect our own health.

It is too bad this book has apparently not gone to paperback because the subject is so important, and this is such a well-done job on the topic. For little more than the price of postage, you can inform yourself on a topic of great importance that we have only begun to scratch the surface of.

5 stars because I couldn't think of an improvement I'd want to make. It's well-written for the understanding of non-health-professionals (I'm one) and seemed like a very comprehensive (for the time, given that recognition of MCS is in its infancy) overview of what appears to be the tip of an iceberg. Rationally, I believe that multiple chemical sensitivity is real, but I don't personally know anyone who is involved, so I have no basis for bias. This book quoted several individuals who have symptoms of multiple chemical sensitivity, and their accounts of the desperate measures they must take to not feel rotten really opened my eyes to the possible future for the rest of us.

The doctors who were interviewed and quoted don't all agree on every aspect of the syndrome, which makes their opinions seem more authentic. Some of them have outright antipathy, not just disagreement, over specific points regarding MCS; however, it seemed to me that they all agree that the specialty of allergies (and MCS) is inexact, almost as much art as science. Some of the avant-garde treatments I read about seem fairly dubious, but the results are apparently well-documented. Although relatively few scientific studies have been done, they seemed appropriate and meaningful to me.

This book is neither anti-industry nor "chicken little" in tone, but it certainly added fuel to my back-to-basics, organic-gardening, anti-industry fire. The facts (some statistics) and opinions (from informed health professionals) presented herein constitute a firm, but rational, warning that we may have opened a chemical Pandora's box when we jumped on the industrial bandwagon. The rising incidence of many chronic diseases (cancer, asthma, ulcers, you name it) may be due only to the fact that those people didn't get felled first by typhoid, malaria, or saber-toothed tigers, but I'm still concerned, and I don't think the coincidence of higher cancer rates and widespread use of industrial chemicals is due to chance. This book doesn't spend many pages addressing solutions; it is aimed at illuminating the source of the problem. I'd recommend it, without reservation, to other laypersons who want to expand their understanding, especially to school kids doing research on industrial chemicals or allergies.

I'm an allergy researcher and when I came on this excellent book, I sat down and read it cover to cover. Couldn't put it down. The writer is very good, the information new and interesting, and thought provoking. "Sick Building Syndrome" is quite real and affects many people on a daily basis. I am sad to see that this fine piece of work is out of print. If you can find a copy, I highly recommend it. Tom Ogren, author of Allergy-Free Gardening :::: from Ten Speed Press

Amber Brown disobeys her mom and lies to her dad about getting her ears pierced. She feels left out because her mom is getting remarried. I love the Amber Brown books because they are very exciting and sometimes the characters get stressed out, but they always talk it out and discuss their feelings. Then they get along. It is just like real life. This is a great book for kids whose parents are divorced or kids who want to understand what other kids' lives are like. JG

This book is fun for kids of all ages! This Amber Brown book is about a girl named Amber Brown and she wants to get her ears pierced, but her mom does not allow her to. So, since her parents are divorced, Amber's dad gets to take Amber anywher she wants. So, her father took her to get her ears pierced but her father didn't know that her mom had said no. So, when Amber got home, she got in trouble. Kids should read this book, I think, around Christmas because it takes place near Christmas. The author's message is to not do things you are not allowed to do.

I have read other Amber Brown books and looked forward to reading this one. She is pretty cool. Sometimes I think she has more brains than the adults, especially her mom, who sometimes seems very spoiled and selfish for an adult. This is a funny true to life on target book. If you haven't discovered Amber Brown, this is the one.

I was maybe five when my dad read this book to me and now, 25 years later, I can still remember the wonder it instilled. If I had $50 to spare I would buy one of these old copies in a heart beat. As it is I can only implore any one in a position to reprint it to do so. You will not be disappointed: it may not seem like much to adults but to children this book is captivating. I can attest to the fact that this is a book a child will never forget.

For anyone searching: this is the one. An easily irritated moon carries off a child and her friend (brother maybe), Lupin, goes on a quest through dark primeval forests of the pacific northwest to save her. From a five year olds perspective this story is epic. I think the thing that stands out the most are the illustrations: dark blues and bright orange, two tiny little kids in a vast, malevolent world.

Good message, suspense and fun!

Found an old hard copy at the library. It was so old that I figured if they still had it after all these years, it must be good! Took it home and the kids and us all loved it. They have changed the way they look at the moon, a new found respect for it's power! We have a number of Native American story books, I especially like the way they tend to incorporate elders as the members with the greatest power. Too many contemporary stories make grandparents out as less valuable. Truly a classic - now off to hunt down my own copy to own.

An amazing picture book by William Sleator (known for HOUSE OF STAIRS and other dark pieces of science fiction) and illustrated by Blair Lent (Caledecott winner for A FUNNY LITTLE WOMAN). It follows a young indian boy through an incredible journey to the moon to rescue his beloved. The artwork is resonant and meaningful and the story compelling. Lots of transformations and magical switcheroos make it satisfying for children of all ages. It is a shame this book is out of print. It needs to be brought back!!

Solid, bilingual collection of Modern Brazilian Poetry

Review Date: 2007-02-07
This book is simply the best source for 20th Century Brazilian poetry. As well-known American poets from Elizabeth Bishop to W.S. Merwin have publicized and translated Portuguese poetry, the Brazilian poets in this volume are becoming better known. Several of these poets have individual volumes of poetry available in English translation.

This book contains poetry of Manuel Bandeira, Oswald de Andrade, Jorge de Lima, Mario de Andrade, Cassiano Ricardo, Joaquim Cardozo, Cecilia Meireles, Murilo Mendes, Carlos Drummond de Andrade, Vinicius de Moraes, Mauro Mota, Joao Cabral de Melo Neto, Marcos Konder Reis, and Ferreira Gullar. Bandeira, Drummond de Andrade, Melo Neto, and Moraes are the best known of these poets. This sampling of poetry is heavily weighted to Melo Neto who is "difficult" - as noted in the introduction.

The translations are very good because the translators are all poets in their own right. Some of the translations are not very exact and the descriptions can be altered significantly, but in general, these translations would be difficult to surpass. The poems are en face - that is on the left page is the orginal Portuguese poem and on the right facing page is the translation. This is the only way to publish bi-lingual poetry and greatly aids the English speaking reader, even if he is fluent in Portuguese.

The quality of the poems is uneven. The more recent poets, like Melo Neto, are increasingly linked to American Poetry so you will find the poems less regional the more recent they get. Since I find most modern American Poets to be needlessly dense and obfuscatory ("difficult" if you will), it is no surprise that I like the earlier poems much better. They are clearer, less baroque in the sense that there is less decorative but useless wordiness, and speak more to the human condition. Melo Neto, who the editors call "dense" and "difficult" reminds me very much of Wallace Stevens. Like Stevens, you put in an awful lot of mental work to get a few thoughtful, interesting phrases from a poem that is much too long for the subject covered. (Can you tell I dislike Stevens?) But if you do like Stevens, generally considered one of the great 20th Century American Poets, you will like Melo Neto.

My favorites in this book are Moraes, Drummond de Andrade, and Mendes. Poetry is one of those art forms that is as much dependent on the knowledge and experience of the viewer as it is the content of the artwork. For example, when Mendes speaks nostalgically of "meu quarto modesto da Praia de Botafogo" (my modest room on Botafogo Beach), I am transported to the sights, sounds and smells of when I lived in a modest room on Botafogo beach.

I also note that the introduction of this book is essential in understanding who these poets are and the ambience from which they write.

At any rate, give this book a shot if you're looking for good poetry full of introspection. 4 stars.

A gem and a marvelous introduction to Brazilian Poetry

Not only does this book (edited by no less an authority on poetry and Brazil than Elizabeth Bishop) contain poems by such greats as Carlos Drummond de Andrade, Vinícius de Moraes, João Cabral de Melo Neto and Manuel Bandeira-- but it has on the facing page translations by such respected greats as James Merill, W.S. Merwin, Mark Strand and Bishop.

The selections are neither too much nor too little. If, like me, you are learning Portuguese, the originals can be studied easily. The quality of the English translations is exceptionally high, many of them great poems in their own right. I credit Bishop and her co-editor Emanuel Brasil, whose introduction is brief and effectively sets the scene.

In Brazil, poetry is widely respected and read. The poets in this anthology are part of the generation that has broken away from the more rigid forms and themes of Portuguese and continental poetry. Poets like Vinícius de Moraes deserve to be known for more than writing the lyrics to "Girl from Ipanema" (he needed the money). This is their due. This anthology has introduced me to several poets I now plan to explore in greater depth.

Brazil is famous for its gems. It is clear this literary gem comes from a very rich mine.

This collection is an absolute classic and is particularly recommended to anyone learning Portuguese. How often are readers of English able to see both the original text and brilliant translated verse? And the selections are magnificent, from Oswald de Andrade to Vinicius de Moraes and Carlos Drummond de Andrade, many of the poets most influential both in literary circles and on the Brazilian songwriters who seem to be more and more prominent on the world stage. Also worth noting are the spectacular poets credited as translators: Elizabeth Bishop, James Merrill, W.S. Merwin, Richard Wilbur...

The poems are broadly chosen, from playful to mournful. Many are unforgettable. Highest recommendation I can give is that it influenced my decision to learn Portuguese.

This is a great book, especially for the native English speaker who is an advanced student of the Brazilian Portuguese language. On each left page is a poem in Portuguese. On each right page is the poem's translation into English. My Portuguese teacher (from Brazil) is a student of literature. She has reviewed the book and thinks it has a really good selection of poems. Not only are the poems great, I love to read the translations to improve my Portuguese.

Initially published in 1972, this anthology stands as one of the first to introduce English-speaking countries to Brazilian modern poetry. Fourteen poets in all are represented, a few more heavily than others (with Carlos Drummond de Andrade and Joao Cabral De Melo Neto receiving nearly half of the space of the book.) Aside from this imbalance, it introduces many poets who are still unfairly obscure in English-speaking countries, even among those with an extensive grasp of modern poetry. Like any great anthology, it has since prompted a few publishers to release book length works of individual poets, esp. Manuel Bandeira, Joao Cabral de Melo Neto & Carlos Drummond de Andrade. Unfortunately, the poets who caught my attention the most such as Murilo Mendes, Cecilia Meireles & Vinicius de Moraes have not received the same attention due to them. From lyrical incantations & meditations of love through pieces of anguish, they prove that they are just as competent to write on these subjects as the world's other great poets. The multiplicity of voices & styles so noticeable in this anthology, proves that Brazil's modern poetry deserves a lot more notice and consideration. In "The End of the World" Joao Cabral de Melo Neto writes, "Instead of the last judgment, what worries me/ is the final dream." This anthology will provide us with numerous dreams for a long time.

Also highly recommended-the recently release "Pip Anthology of World Poetry of the 20th Century Volume 3: 20 Contemporary Brazilian Poets" pub. Green Integer.

THE TRUTH ABOUT SEX AND LOVE FOR LYDIA
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-09-16
Love for Lydia is set in the small-town English countryside. It's exactly as where the author, H. E. Bates lived. Bates was a prolific (100+) author and this is one of his best received tales. Others include, "The Darling Buds of May" and "My Uncle Silas". To emphasize the importance of these three books; all were made into television series and are available on DVD yet today.

TRUTH ABOUT LOVE FOR LYDIA:
The book is about a teenage girl coming of age and learning of love.

It is not a SEX, SEX, SEX book.

The book follows the life of fictional Richardson (the "I" in the story) and his own search for what love is or means.

The book is not pornographic, unless you consider the one-time mention of dancing in a brassier, or the noticing a breast in the hospital, or the intimations of having made love without spelling out the act. This story is of looking for love, not acting it out.

Truth is, there is abundant kissing. STEAMY?

Alex, Blackie, Tom, as well as Richardson fall in love with Lydia--who can help it?, she's beautiful, fun, and charming. But she started out shy and withdrawn. Skating and dancing breaks down the shyness and life becomes a whirlwind of joyous activity--to excess--even to a life-threatening binge. Loves die and others grow. Who will win Lydia's love, once she discovers what it is for herself? That's what makes the book worth the read. That's what made it into a television series.

The revealing of love's journey in this story is what makes it a reprint decades after the author's 1974 death. The story is timeless, and the location seems sometimes to be describing an American location, instead of the true English scene.

Don't buy this if you are looking for a cheap, hot, romance novel. This is a classic romance. Bates takes young love and passes it through years of exposure. As Lydia asked herself, "Will you love me, even if I'm bad to you?"

OK, so I'm a guy. Ladies, you'll love this book for some of your own reasons, like fantastic descriptions of clothing and settings. Flirtatious dialogue. Romantic male actions (flowers and such). It's so honest and true-to-life, perhaps that's what makes it a can't-put-it-down book.

Love depicted between Lydia and her male associates is nearly as PG-rated as that found involving Mr. Aartemann, in "Mr. Aartemann's Crayon."

A classic love story, beautifully written

HE Bates is one of the most under-rated authors of the Century and this book is his masterpiece. It is the story of the love of a young man for the beautiful Lydia, and how their love has painful and tragic consequences for them both and their friends. It is a story of warmth, love lost and love found, of growing up, of rejection and hope. HE Bates had a profound love for the countryside and it shines through in the detail of his narrative. A few books teach you more and more each time you read them: this is one of them.

Lydia is a symbol of the Twenties -- a time when young women were learning to be more direct and uninhibited by morality. As a rather shy girl who inherits a great deal of money at a young age, Lydia is surrounded by young men anxious to please. But instead of settling on just one, Lydia soon finds that she can enjoy two or three young men buzzing around her as long as she likes. She plays them against each other and allows each one to think that only he has won her heart. But all the while, her own lifestyle is growing ever more reckless and self destructive.

The sex scenes in this book are very steamy. Deep down Lydia is the type of girl who really just can't get enough. But she's also very good at pretending to be cold and haughty when dealing with her gentleman friends. When dealing with the well to do lads who offer marriage, she can be quite stiff, yet the secret flings she has with local working lads are very sexy and raw.

The narrator of this book is honest and true. He is the only young man in the village who sees Lydia for what she is. The sad thing is, he can't help loving her. But finally he walks away. When that happens, Lydia becomes truly heartbroken. There are more parties, and more wild affairs, and of course there is more drinking. Lydia smokes and drinks and is the very picture of the glamorous young, always having fun and being quite scandalous.

Yet all the time, there is a hollowness in her life she can't understand. The last chapters of the book show Lydia really reaching a decision to reach out honestly to the man she loves. Of course you don't see that right away. At first she just feels blue without knowing why. It's so touching the way she has one jazz record that reminds her of that honest young love, and she plays that record only when alone in her room. You see her lying around after a late night, resting in her room and listening to the music, and thinking. Is this all she wants from life? Gradually she drops off to sleep on the bed, and the faces of all the young men she's kissed come back to her. But when she falls asleep she pictures herself with that special young man, not dancing to hot jazz or making out in a car, but the time he taught her how to ice skate on the frozen river.

Lydia knows what she has to do. But does she succeed? LOVE FOR LYDIA is a sexy book with some really romantic moments.

Awesome book.

This book has one of the most accurate descriptions of wintertime that I have ever read. It's a beautiful book that should not be read quickly-- one should savor it rather, because every sentence is so elegantly crafted that you practically want to memorize it. It's one of the few books I always have with me.

This book is a fictionalized account of Angela's life and her suffering from abuse, parental and then spousal. She overcame this cruel treatment to become a driving force in helping others escape from their own hell. Read it and learn.

This book is a powerful and gripping first hand account of the abuse suffered by the author from early in childhood to married adult life afterwards. But it is not a "woe is me story" like so many other writings. Quite the contrary, the author shows how she was able to finally recognize that being abused was NOT normal living, that she deserved better in life, and carried out a plan to gain control of her life. Having gained control of her own life, the author embarks on a crusade to help other women realize that they need not be abused...that they too may break the bond of oppression, end the vicious cycle of abusive partners, recognize that the abusers are pathetic losers whom they should not be entangled with in the first place, and discard the trash in their lives once and for all and attain fulfillment. An inspiring story.

I didn't know that there were other books like this one until coming to Amazon. Now I'll have to get the others, too! My kids love this book! The bright sparkly paper really attracts their attention. And the text and lenghth is just right for the toddler age set. The round faced, smiling girl in the book always make my kids smile right back at her.

Baby Dazzlers are a must for your baby's book collection!

Easy to read to the youngest of babies, this book is fantastic for learning colors and naming simple objects. The rhyming schemes are fun and the unique art with glittery items on each page is entertaining. I own the whole series and my almost-two-year-old son has LOVED them since he was about six months old.

Along with the other three books in the series, my 18 month old daughter has this one. She likes all four, but this one is probably my favorite. This book; along with the others, is so colorful and bright that it captures my daughters attention. The text is simple so it's just enough for her to sit through. I highly recommend all four books.

This book came in a set of the other 3 Baby Dazzlers titles. My 2 year old loves the simple and enthusiastic rhymes, bright colors, and glittery accents on every page. Each book has a baby with a different skin color, which is always nice! Children's book of the month club offers all four books in a set for really cheap! I recommend all four

This book as well as Helen Stehpens other books are fantastic. They are the best books we've got to read to our baby. They have great colors and short and simple tales. My 6 1/2 month old pulls this one out of her toy chest among all her other toys.

Deceptively simple, Bark and Tim brings you an age-old story of friendship, that between a boy and his beloved dog. Tim Brown's colorful folk art and the spare (but evocative) text will engage and delight children, while it helps them to understand that, through art, we can keep our friends in our hearts forever.

The True and Beautiful Story of a Boy and His Dog

This story flows like a river on a lazy summer afternoon, winding its way across the Mississippi countryside of the 1920's and 30's. Audrey Glassman Vernick and Ellen Glassman Gidaro's language is both deceptively simple and wonderfully rich. Tim Brown's folk art is as scruffy as Bark himself, and is all the more real for that.

Bark and Tim gives us rough-hewn truth and timeworn beauty. It gives us piny woods, soft grass, and shiny mud. It gives us the early-dark days between Halloween and Thanksgiving, the cloudy mist of Christmas dreams, the sweet air of Spring, and the warm summer sun. It gives us a boy, his dog, and all the seasons they spent together.

Bark and Tim gives us love. Not the some idealized, syrupy, slicked-up version of love. It gives us real love. And thank goodness for that.

I originally bought this book for myself. There is something about this book that pulls you in, and makes you want to own it. The combination of the author's story and Tim Brown's artwork is magical. After reading Bark and Tim to my daughter for the first time, she took over my copy and now likes to keep it beside her at night. She says she wants to sleep with Bark. It definitely has both adult and kid appeal.

Would also make a great gift to anyone who loves art, dogs, picture books, or just a good, unique story.

When you're done enjoying the book, don't forget to read the author's note at the end. The story of their collaboration with Tim Brown is worthy of its own book. It's a fascinating story.

A "MUST HAVE" FOR PET LOVERS . . .

this heartwarming story about a boy and his dog is even more special, knowing it's based on the artist's own childhood and illustrated with his paintings. Sisters Audrey and Ellen tell Tim Brown's story beautifully.

The relationship between Bark & Tim reminded me of pets I've loved and lost, bringing tears to my eyes. My son asks for it often, as he enjoys Bark's antics.

BARK & TIM is the perfect addition to a pet lovers library!
