Great book for kids. I bought this book for a student who had won the foul shooting competition in his age group for NYS. He has not been able to put it down. He dreams of becoming a basketball star himself. I wanted him to read about someone who has achieved this dream. Very Positive Book!!

I just finished the book and i thought it was amazing. I thought it gave a lot of information about his life while teaching very important life lessons. I also learned a lot of information about Carmelo that I didn't know before. For example I learned that Carmelo's father died when he was only two. Before I read it I thought his father left him. I also thought that the fun facts at the bottom of the pages where really interesting. i really found the one about him being able to play for Puerto Rico in the Olympics really interesting. All in all I thought it was a really good book.

Carmelo Anthony is the best new nba player i've ever seen and it's great that he has shared his life story with us. After reading the book it made me like him even better and i found out i have something in commom with him my dad was puerto rican too, i didn't know that about him. Writing this book made carmelo more aprochable to his fans and it lets us know he's a real person just like you and me and that he really cares about his true fans. I love the book i can't stop reading it's awesome. The book is very inspirational he tells us to never give up and work hard for everything we want to be, he's just a great person

This book is an amazing book. For him to have shared his inner life with all of his loyal fans. The book contains 48 full pages of pictures fans will love not to mention the autobiography. I think his book helps children like me to remember the better things in life and to stay focused because as is saying goes "Halfdone isn't Done" short sweet to the point.

I ordered this biography of Carmelo Anthony as a Christmas gift for my son, a serious sports nut. After fighting over who would get to read it first (his sister is a big Carmelo fan too), he dove in and began to read. Several days later my son said to me, "Mom, this is a good book for me to be reading since Carmelo had struggles as a kid, too." (My husband and I recently separated and he's been struggling with that change.)

The book hit the spot (for both my children) in every way. It is well written, has great photos, is very timely and of great interest to kids.

Highly recommended!

I absolutely loved the Encyclopedia Brown Series growing up. I read and reread them so much people called me Encyclopedia Jones. Actually, I did get pretty good at helping people find things. Too bad I didn't charge 25 cents!
This book, like all of Donald J. Sobol's Encyclopedia Brown books, makes you think, and pay attention, but each case is lots of fun. Leroy Brown, son of the chief of police, is the only boy detective in Idaville. He is so good at solving problems, locating missing items, and investigating crimes, that he starts his own detective agency.
Each book in the series has about ten cases. All of the clues needed to solve the case are provided in the story. The answers are in the back of the book. But what fun is it to peak at the answers?
I hope that any one reading, the Case of the Secret Pitch, one of my favorites, is sure to enjoy it, even if, like me, you need a little help from the answer pages.

This is a good book. The cases are about a secret pitch,a balloon man accused of kidnapping,a cowboy that's ambushed, stolen gold,a hitchhiker who is a witness to a holdup gang,a boy poet who gets in a fight,a boy who gets shot by an air gun,a stolen penknife named Excalibur,a man who gts tricked out of his violin by a glass of ginger ale,and a stolen bike.

Leroy's back! Ten all new cases! He still solves them for his dad(chief of police)and has his own detective agency. This is good for kids my age since it really gets your brain thinking. This is the second book in the series and it's just like the first one except there's different cases.

I liked this and recommend this for anyone who:

1.likes Mysteries or
2.is ten years old

If you read this book then you will like it too!

Encyclopedia Brown is a 5th grade boy who solves puzzles, crimes and mysteries as easily and as unconsciously as breathing.

Each book is a series of short mysteries (5-10 pages each) ending with a question - usually "how did Encyclopedia know that X was responsible for the crime". The answer to each mystery is at the back of the book. Solving the mystery takes no special knowledge, but it does require paying attention to detail. Don't turn to the answer too fast.

This book is the second in the series, but the books do not have to be read in order. I loved the Encyclopedia Brown books when I was growing up. I am reading them again before I give them to my nephew who I hope will enjoy them as I did.

Adults who like this series may also enjoy the Lateral Thinking Puzzles books.

My daughter and I loved the addy story's wonderful story for girls to understand a bit of history told in a way that they can relate to . slavery is a tough subject and they really make the characters come to life enabling the reader to have compassion and insight to their lives . I only wish they had more addy story's so we could continue to follow her journey.

Of all the Addy books, this last one was my favorite as a girl. (I remember crying when I finished it)-by no means do I want to give away the end, but this book really illustrates the consequences reaped by the civil war. Though written for younger girls, I would even recommend this for older people to read because adults would probably be able to grasp the deeper meaning of this book- that perhaps we ought to take a lesson from history. Our prejudices and arrogance led to the enslavement of part of our race, which led to hate and violence. We still see these things today and so perhaps by reading books like these, that go back to times of hardship or war, it makes us see that there will always be consequences to our actions, and oftentimes it takes a generation or so for it to take its harsh affects.

This story is about a young American girl named Addy. In "Changes for Addy", Addy gets a letter from a women named Bertha Miller saying that she has found Addy's Auntie Lula, Uncle Solomon, and Addy's baby sister Esther. They were going to Philadelphia to give Esther back to Addy's momma. When they find Auntie Lula and Esther outside a church, Auntie Lula explains that Uncle Solomon has died and she, Auntie Lula, may die too. The joy of Christmas for Addy is washed away, leaving only the sadness of death. Is Addy's Christmas ruined? Or will Addy find joy in the happiness of the Christmas? I would highly recommend this book to a friend. This book is a tiny bit better than "Happy Birthday, Felicity" because Addy has way more adventure than Felicity. Connie Rose Porter is an awesome reader and writer.

This is another in the American Girls series about Addy Walker, a ten-year-old African-American girl living in the America of 1865. With the war over, but so many ex-slaves displaced, Addy and her family still hope to find sister Esther. In yet another winter, Addy finds the good and the bad, gain and loss, and hope and the cost of freedom.

The final chapter is a historical look at the post-Civil War years, with Reconstruction, segregation, and the Civil Right Movement. This is another great Addy book, one that tells the unvarnished truth of life for African-Americans in America, but in an uplifting way. My eleven-year-old daughter is now the proud owner of the Addy books, and an Addy doll. She loves these books, and the young lady in your life will too.

Breaking the original overemphasis on the experiences of white girls, the Addy series remains one of the most realistic ones written.

The process of escaping from Slavery and starting over in a "free" society only to discover that society does not actually regard you as an equal either is not the happiest topic in the world, but it needs to be told in order to learn from our mistakes. The authors could have sugar coated the harsh realities of that world, but wisely chose to tell the whole truth to their elementary age target audience.

If ever there were a case where the Congressional Medal of Honor should be given out to a team of Children's Literature writers and illustrators, this team certainly has earned it.

In this installment, Addy is reuinted with her baby sister ester after what seemed like an eternity. While the previous reunions with her father and her brother were also emotional, the symbolism of shadows moving forward in a Church is especially powerfull. Her beloved Uncle Solomon has died, but has found peace because of his brief status as a free man.

The end of the book, which provides a historical recap is especially touching because it goes all the way into the civil rights movement of the 1950's and 1960's. Considering many public school districts give this portion of American History little attention (whether on purpose or not) I feel it is especially important for young women to read this particular portion of the American Girl's series.

My boys are 6 and 7 and they LOVE doing the Science experiments in this book. The items needed are easy to find, usually common household item, but nothing too fancy. It has really changed how they view "science" and it's fun to see them question what they are learning. You can never get the gears cranking at too young an age and this book opens the door to a interesting introduction into the world of science.

Janice VanCleave's Chemistry For Every Kid is a must have book for upper elementary/middle school science teachers. The experiments are easy to set up and the kids LOVE them! Janice has tackled tough Chemistry concepts and come up with simple experiments that the kids ACTUALLY understand! I have used the activities in this book numerous times and couldn't recommend this book highly enough. The way I use the activities in this book, along with the others in the series, is set them up as stations and have the kids rotate through them. You will not be disappointed with this purchase and your kids will love you for it.

No handwriting required and no over-the-head scientific explanations. It is clear, simple, and EASY to pull off the shelf and use. I recommend previewing the list of materials for the week to be sure you have the needed items. Substitutions can effect the experiment. I use this with ages 4-10 and they ALL enjoy the experiments. The experiments are simplistic and easy for young children to grasp the idea yet have enough information to get the parents thought process going! A great introduction to chemistry that takes very little time to prep and do. I even use this book as birthday party entertainment! A favorite with us.

My eight year old daughter asked for a chemistry set for her birthday; a real chemistry set; one she could do real experiments with. There are no longer many quality chemistry sets on the market. I guess the safety regulations are too strict; making it unprofitable to sell "real" chemistry sets. I ordered this book. I was concerned I would end up having to mail order supplies, but I made one trip to the grocery store and my daughter was set to work through the book.

The coolest part, to her, was the potential danger inherent with some of the supplies. She worked through six experiments in three days and proudly tells her younger neighborhood girlfriends "Sorry, You can't touch those things. It's too dangerous. It's Chemistry."

The best part for me, the experiments are carefully arranged in a progressive manner so that they start from the simplest and safest activities. She can work through them in order, with supervision, safely building her confidence and skills.

Unlike many books that purport to promote science, but are really just a collection of entertaining activities, this book includes the science concepts behind the wow. So, she really is learning.

This is a much more condensed and useful book than Fellen's. Lots of little CXRs with a good approach to tackling them. Both Fellens and this one are good. Fellen's is more a medical student level book, kinda like Dubin EKGs. While this is more on intern, resident level. But even my medical students enjoy this one.

There is also an abdominal film xray book similar to this one. Also very good. No one ever explains how to look at abdominal films, this does a good job.

This little book starts off by actually teaching you HOW to read a CXR. Not many books do that ... they just assume that you can. Then it goes into the four broad categories of abnormalities: 1) too white, 2) too black, 3) too large and 4) in the wrong place which helps you to categorise abnormalities. Then all the major conditions (e.g. pneumonia, COPD, malignancies etc.) are reviewed under each category. Read this before you start you clinical years and keep it in your coat pocket along with 'The ECG made easy'. Look at heaps of CXRs and ECGs from the beginning of the year along with the help of these books. Practice makes perfect! Good luck! I wish someone had told me these things at the beginning of the year! ;)

This beautifully illustrated book retells bible stories from all three sections of the Tanakh--Torah, Prophets, and Writings. Along the sides of the stories are illustrations and photographs that help children identify places, life style, and time periods in the typical DK format. The translation and biblical quotes follow The Holy Scriptures According to the Masoretic Text: A New Translation, copyright 1917 by Jewish Publication Society. Each Bible story is told on a two-page spread. The stories are told simply with an emphasis on action that will hold a child's interest. In addition, there are many interesting facts and information about the ancient Hebrews given in introductions explaining each section and sidebars along each page. The book has an excellent index, list of Biblical places and Biblical names. Unfortunately, very few entries are about women in the Bible. Although the authors talk about Jacob and his sons, there is no mention of his daughter Dinah. The Matriarchs are mentioned only in relationship to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. There is no mention of Deborah, either. Although the story of Josiah and the Scrolls is told, Huldah is absent from this version. There is a nice retelling of the story of Ruth, however, and Michal's rescue of David is presented well. The pictures are colorful and include many photographs of modern day people in biblical settings. For example, when talking about David being a shepherd, the illustrator uses a photo of a shepherd in modern Israel. Photographs of statues and pottery found in archaeological digs in addition to photos of actual places mentioned in the text add immeasurably to the book's appeal. The audio CD tells some of the stories from the book. Teresa Gallagher, the narrator, has a pleasant speaking voice and uses good expression in reading the stories. The added information, many sidebars, maps, and the retelling of the stories themselves in clear, easy-to-understand language makes this a valuable book for children and adults looking for a simple introduction to biblical text. This book is highly recommended for all collections. Ages 7 and up. Reviewed by Susan Dubin

My children are just on 5 and 2 and I felt that it was time to start introducing them to Bible stories.I ordered this book cold because the reviews sounded good and the reviews were right: my oldest has slept with this book for the last three weeks. She also puts it in her backpack to take to preschool with her and says the teachers and other children love it as well. Every night she begs for a different story and my two year old also enjoys the stories (and more importantly, the great pictures. In addition, the book comes with an audio CD that my daughter loves to put in the CD player and listen to when I am busy.
This is a Jewish Bible (what I wanted) and I am grateful to have found such a well written collection - generally I have found that age group appropriate renderings have been only for the Christian bible.

What a marvelous event she had to ponder in her heart. What are your favorite Christmas memories? Do you remember all the particular details of that special time? Don't you wish you would have a book where you could write down special memories so that just by reading them later on, all those wonderful memories could come back, without having to rely on your memory? Imagine the fascination of the children when they read about when Mom and Dad were young or they were just youngsters.

Susan Branch has created just the keepsake book for your favorite five Christmases. Remembering your last Christmas or New Years with a special family member or special friend are just a couple of ideas she presents. Preserving memories for years to come is just what this book is terrific for. There is a place for traditions, movies of that year, moments, humorous happenings and a picture of the tree which adorned your house could be kept.

There are very beautiful illustrations throughout this spiral-bound album for you to enjoy as you prepare it from year to year. Even if you aren't a scrapbooker, you too can become a `preserver of memories.' This book records 5 years of Christmas memories and is a treasure in our home. Each year in full of areas for pictures, attaching keepsakes, and recording memories that would otherwise get forgotten with the passage of time. There is also a pocket in the far back to keep other treasures in as well, such as letters to Santa, etc. We have completed the first 4 years and I intend on buying another copy after we complete the 5th year in December 2006. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who wants to preserve memories!

First published in Le Petit Vingtième between 8/12 1932 and 8/2 1934. The book appeared in 1934 . Redrawn in 1955. It was first published in English in 1971.

A colurful and detailed adventure , Tintin and his dog Snowy meet up with an eccentric Egyptologist on a cruise , taking Tintin on a danger-filled adventure from Egypt to Arabia to India , in a hunt for whoever is behind the mystery of the Cigars of the Pharaoh , he is framed for heroin possesion , caught up in an Arabian war and sentenced to be executed , lost in the desert , locked up in a mental assylum in India , before being led to an international ring of drug trafficers. It is amazing the amount of detail Herge worked into these adventure comics.

Many of us grew up on them and love them for the nostalgia value.
I loved the animation in the underground Pharaoh's tomb.

On a journey to Egypt Tintin meets absentminded Egyptologist Professor Siclone. The professor is in search of mystery. The only clue is a symbol drawn on a piece of parchment. Once in Egypt Tintin and Snowy follow the professor into an underground passageway marked by the symbol and find empty sarcophaguses marked with their names. They escape and find themselves pursued by mysterious criminals. All the while the mysterious symbol keeps turning up on stone walls, painted on trees, and on cigar labels...

This comic is fun because of the exotic landscapes. Tintin travels through Egypt and India which are drawn with exotic flare. Whenever he thinks he has entered the traditional untouched east, western civilization intrudes: He rescues a lady from bandits only to discover that he has just spoiled a scene from an adventure movie. He is captured by Bedouins who recognize him as a celebrity reporter and are happy to have him as a guest. He approaches two arabs to ask directions and finds that they are in fact the Thompson and Thomson team who have donned robes to blend in. The east meets west theme, inherent even in the mysterious cigars marked with an ancient Egyptian symbol, kept me guessing through the book.

The Cigars of the Pharoah maintains the quality of other books in the series. There are jokes for children and for adults, so it is a good purchase for families and public libraries. There are some loose ends which are tied up on part 2 of the story: The Blue Lotus.

As you might or might not know, most early Tintin was originally published in B/W format, with old style drawing. Yes boys and girls, it wasn't the colour edition we have now in hands. The first 9 titles are sceheduled to be released in English. This Cigars of the Pharaoh is one of them.

Most early Tintin might look very old to us. The drawing weren't that smooth, compared to the later coloured edition. If you're a die-hard Tintin fan, I'm sure you really wanted to know what the book originally looked like. You will notice that the panels also changed. Not just the size, but also the sequence. Some panels were even edited or deleted. Some panels are added. In short, you can compare both editions.

The book was carefully printed and packaged. From the looks, people would already guess that this book (and also the others) is a lux book. The paper was good. The hard cover was good. The binding was good. The printing inside was also good. What more can you expect? Here the book also provided several pin-ups or covers in colour. It's a very nice gift!

If you feel you're a die-hard fan of Tintin (and Herge) then no doubt you must have all these 9 B/W original editions.

In his latest book Pete Steinke addresses the growing concern in the church of chronic anxiety. He helps the reader to understand what is happening in this anxious systems and how you should seek to respond to it by remaining calm and self-differentiated. It is difficult, but necessary, to take a stand in the midst of the anxious system while remaining focused and calm. This book is highly recommended for all who are struggling in chronically anxious church systems.

I used this book with a group of Baptist deacons in a one-day retreat. Steinke communicates clearly basic Bowen theory concepts so that laypersons can apply them to the congregation as an emotional system. This resource gave us fresh ways of looking at problems in our 100 year old church. I only wish every member could read it! I'm trying to find ways to use this material--and a companion DVD now available--with other groups within the church. It helps everyone talk about the elephant in the room with a new vocabulary.

An Introduction to Leadership in Anxious Congregations

Peter Steinke, ELCA pastor, author, scholar, and church consultant is currently the leading researcher in Bowen Family Systems theory. This latest book, "Congregational Leadership in Anxious Times," is written for pastors and other congregational leaders with the hope that the information contained with both enlighten and embolden them (xi). The brief book (175 pages) is divided into three sections: "The Leader's Presence," "The Leader's Functioning," and "The Leader's Challenges."

While this present book provides little new information per se on applying the Bowen Theory to religious leadership, the information is presented in an interesting, enlightening way. Steinke's style of writing is simple without being simplistic. He breaks information down into small, easily-digestible parts...yet never comes across as "talking down" to the reader.

Bowen Theory places a great deal of emphasis on strong, independent-minded-yet-connected leaders. The trick (according to Rev. Rick Foss in the foreword) is to practice excellent leadership consistently. Steinke draws upon his vast experience as a church consultant and researcher to provide examples of a leader's effect on a congregation (positive and negative), pitfalls, and the complex emotional process that can help or hinder leadership.

This book would be ideal for congregational leaders (ordained, contracted, or elected) as both a work of inspiration and a launching point for more research in the leadership genre. Indeed, this book's main contribution is that it provides and easy entry-point into the Family Systems Theory.

While it is recommended for those without much experience in Bowen Theory, those who have digested the works of Ed Friedman may not find much new...even through they might find much to inspire.

As a veteran pastor I know few books like this one which help a man think through his positions and work through the emotional processes of leading a group. This work aims beyond structural programming at the invisible emotional-spiritual dimensions of leading like Joshua, "Choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve; but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord." I find this book insightful, challenging and encouraging for this purpose. I am sure that I will reread this one often.

It's about integrity and courage.

Steinke's book saved my life and probably that of the church I pastor. His analysis of leading through crisis was invaluable to me as I found the need to confront a wayward but dynamic staff member and eventually persuade the personnel committee to be the leaders they really want to be. After 3 1/2 years of ignoring others' attempts to hold her accountable, change is finally accomplished. I knew what had to be done, but Steinke's wonderful analysis of such situations made it clearer and more defensible. It's not over yet, but the anxiety has been removed for the most part, and now we have a chance to be the Church of Jesus Christ, a church of honesty and integrity.

Will also be helpful to leaders in all kinds of organizations.

When I first read this book, I thought it was "rushed". Everyone seemed to be hurrying through the day. Then I realized that's pretty much like our own "day care days". I also loved that the daddy in the story is pretty much the primary care giver...he gets the kids dressed, takes them to day care, puts them in bed, etc. My husband is like this, also, so it was great for my daughter to see the daddy taking the kids to day care just like her daddy does. It is one of my daughter's favorite books...She especially loves the pictures and always insists on "naming" all the kids at the day care. (ex. "This girl in the picture is me, this one can be Ann Marie, that boy is Reed".)

Kids love it.

This beautifully illustrated book tells about the day in the life in a toddler as he prepares for and goes to day care. The vivid illustrations are full of life and children love looking at them. The story is full of warmth and tenderness. The kids I teach at the preschool I work at love comparing our child care center to the one in the book. This is a great book for any child care center or any family who has or is preparing to use a day care facility.

A favorite in our house!

Beautiful illustrations highlight this book! The rich colors and bold designs are warm and fun. We particularly like the twist on traditional gender roles as Mom goes off to work while Dad does day care drop-off and pick-up, and cooks dinner to boot!

Perfect Book for all toddlers and children

I am a toddler teacher always looking for great new books to read at circle time - this is it! The story follows a simple format easy enough for 2-3 year olds in day care to understand. The illustrations are vibrant and easy for children to identify with. This is a wonderful book that lets children know that their world is important to us and that the emotions they feel are natural and quite common. This book is requested by my students on a daily basis!
