Thank you Mr. Brown for writing this.15893950775002005-04-07Jeff Brown is a genius I attended high school with Jeff Brown. I always knew the man would grow up to do great, cool things. And he has. WITCHING WATER is the best book I have read in along time. It is an intriguing mystery novel and a great portrait of rural Oklahoma people. I suggest you all get off your butt and go buy this terrific book from Amazon or your bookstore.5 stars is not enough for this wonderful read.15893950775002005-03-18Jeff Brown please write more please Author Jeff Brown has written a really cool mystery set in rural Oklahoma. Jeff knows how Oklahomans think, act and speak. The characters in the book could be your next door neighbors or friends or 'kinfolk'. I understand that the author is now teaching public school in Dallas, Texas. If he has the time he should write another book. I have become a great fan of Mr. Brown's and have read Witching Water three times. I have urged my friends to read this thrilling book as well. I hope a major publisher will pick up the rights to this book and give it a wider readership. The cheerful sign at the city limits nears the only stop light reads "Welcome to Havana, Oklahoma, population 1,700." Despite the lighthearted welcome, death is no stranger to this small town. Crime, however, seems as alien as the meanest streets of the distant inner cities.
Here children roam carefree until bedtime. Neighbors chat with genuine care over back fences. Virtually all doors are left unbolted and unchecked at night … and a mysterious, leather-clad phantom haunts the midnight highways on an antique Indian Motorcycle.
Three treasured citizens have died grisly "accidental" deaths over a weekend's time and the town's beloved only doctor has vanished. Assistant District Attorney Mike Wind's Native American instincts tell him that something other than tragic coincidence is amiss. Teamed with high school sweetheart and brilliant chemist Allie Lamareaux, Wind uncovers a bizarre alchemy of environmental crime and greed transformed to illness, insanity and murder.10466General10457Mystery18Mystery & Thrillers1000Subjects283155Books713462011General AAS10457Mystery18Mystery & Thrillers1000Subjects283155Books605116General18Mystery & Thrillers1000Subjects283155Books713437011General AAS18Mystery & Thrillers1000Subjects283155Books400272011Paperback394184011Mass Market401237011Trade394174011Binding (binding)388186011Refinements283155Books618083011Printed Books618072011Format (feature_browse-bin)388186011Refinements283155Books0316152935http://www.amazon.com/Alfred-Graebner-Memorial-Handbook-Regulations/dp/0316152935%3FSubscriptionId%3D05ERXYTS89KFGEPQR5G2%26tag%3Dthebookrevi0b-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3D03161529352223523Ellen ConfordHardcover9780316152938500316152935EnglishEnglishEnglish8001495USD$14.95Little Brown & Co (Juv)220Book1976-05Little Brown & Co (Juv)Ages 9-12Little Brown & Co (Juv)The Alfred G. They're a little young yet, Jr. High, but I couldn't wait to have them read my very favorite book from years ago. Some of the details are a bit dated, (and a bit hazy to me now), but everything else is timeless--although, when they screwed up MY class schedule, I wasn't lucky enough to get all lunches and study hours! This is a must read for ALL teens.03161529355112002-05-15A Favorite ReadI came across this book years ago while working in my high school library and the librarian recommended it to me, saying she had always enjoyed it. After reading it, it immediately became a favorite. The writing is smart and witty, and while dated certainly (the protagonist compares a favorite teacher to Robert Redford) it doesn't hamper one's ability to enjoy the characters and plot. In high school especially, it was easy to relate to the woes of the characters as they maneuvered the difficulties of growing up and just getting through class each day.
When finished reading, I ended up introducing the book to our school's book club and it became the one book we all own and read over and over (it gets quoted at least once a month!) The book isn't the Great American Novel, but it certainly is worth an afternoon or two of reading for sheer entertainment value. As mentioned in previous reviews, anybody 13 years old or up (or anybody looking to rediscover their 13 year old self) will enjoy this light, funny read. 03161529355112002-01-27The Alfred G. Graebner Memorial High School Handbook of RuleAn EXCELLENT book! I give it 5 stars! A++++++! =-) I was skimming the book shelf of my teachers class looking for a book to read for my next test and I came accross this book. It looked like a good book and it was. I loved it so much that I kept the book and reread it 5 times!
~Fran03161529355332001-04-01Read it over and over againI wish I had the foresight to buy more of Ellen Conford's books from the late 70s, early 80s. I reread this book probably once a year, because it still is very funny and speaks to all the fears and dreams a teenage girl has. I always loved Ellen Conford, because she wrote about normal kids who did their homework, didn't do drugs and had both good and bad teachers in their classes. Julie is a great heroine because she's pretty normal, and therefore you can relate to her, her crushes, her family, her friends and her insecurities. As always, the moral is that you, as a teenaged female, are just great the way you are. Another plus for Ms. Conford.03161529355442000-01-14Very Entertaining novel set up in interesting format.A very funny look at high school life thru the eyes of a cool girl. The way it is set up is there are 10 or 12 sections or quotes taken from the High School Rule Book. Then, they tell the story that corresponds with rule section. This format fits the story very well, and is very inventive from a writer's standpoint. It is a cool look at high school life. The girl wants to be a writer, and tries to get something published in the school journal. The only problem is its by a die hard cynic who doesn't like her. Its an endearing story. In a way, it is like several ministories tied into one, the character going thru her high school career. The ending is well conceived, and has real meaning. Be yourself. Excellent book!
Also recommended: No Flying in the House. Classic Faerie Tale story. As Julie muddles through her sophomore year of high school, her experiences often are contrary to those mentioned in the student handbook.170063General2786Ages 9-124Children's Books1000Subjects283155Books713074011General AAS2786Ages 9-124Children's Books1000Subjects283155Books713072011General AAS4Children's Books1000Subjects283155Books394181011Hardcover394174011Binding (binding)388186011Refinements283155Books618083011Printed Books618072011Format (feature_browse-bin)388186011Refinements283155Books673423011Ages 9-12673420011Age Range (age_range)388186011Refinements283155BooksKOZJRROWBOXW15 books from fantasy to fiction2ACAGOK9C948TChildrens Books to Read at Any Age0439260116http://www.amazon.com/Amber-Brown-Paula-Danziger/dp/0439260116%3FSubscriptionId%3D05ERXYTS89KFGEPQR5G2%26tag%3Dthebookrevi0b-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3D0439260116901324http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51WYF6J37JL._SL75_.jpg7563http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51WYF6J37JL._SL160_.jpg160134http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51WYF6J37JL.jpg475398Paula DanzigerPaperback9780439260114Box set1670439260116EnglishEnglishEnglish7781596USD$15.96Scholastic4Book2001-06ScholasticAges 4-8ScholasticAmber Brown955461600USD$16.0091USD$0.9121800005.09204392601165002006-08-30Hello Fellow Readers **I love reading Amber Brown to the family, I started to read about Amber Brown when I was in the 2nd grade & I have loved it ever since, So now I pass it on to my younger Brothers and Sister!!

Therefore, reading this book was a humorous and nostalgic look back to another time in America. There were references to presidency of Ronald Reagan and the Iran Contra scandal, the nuclear arms race, the evil empire of the Soviet Union and the first president Bush.
For one moment, I forgot the time context of the strip. On page 50 boy genius Oliver W. Jones has created a teleportation device. In the final caption of the segment, his father asks him, "Could you put George Bush into the White House?" To which he responds, "OH, WHY DO YOU ALWAYS EXPECT THE IMPOSSIBLE FROM ME?!" At first, I thought the reference was to George W. Bush, but then realized it was about George Herbert Walker Bush. I laughed at that one because it certainly could be applied to both.
Cartoon strips provide us with humor and a cynical look at the political and social forces of the time. Therefore, if you have little knowledge of the events of the eighties, then you will have a difficult time understanding many of the cartoons. However, if you lived through them and were old enough to be politically acute, then you will enjoy this book as much as I did.
18708700505002005-03-12Told You!Ok for you Get Fuzzy fans, this is what I am talking about. On the cover of this collection we see Berkly Breathed using the Bruce Springsteen album collection set(from Christmas 1987) for inspiration. Take a look at the cover, Are You Bucksperienced just plagerizes this idea.18708700505242004-06-16Bloom County 4.... or 5.... depends on....Okay - Bloom County Babylon, the 4th Bloom County book was really a compilation of material contained in the first 3 books. So.... depending on if you want a chronological collection of the BC Strips, or to complete ALL of the BC Books, this is either the 4th or 5th volume of Bloom County, and Berkeley Breathed is still in high-gear producing the funniest 'toon strip I've ever read. And by "funny" I mean laugh-out-loud, roll on the floor, tears streaming down my face, people coming into the room to see "WHAT are you laughing at?!!!?" kind of laugh.
In "Billy and the Boingers" Steve Dallas, the sleazy womanizing ambulance-chasing lawyer, finally decides that even HE has had it with defending murderers and child abusers. Bill the cat inspires him to hold auditions for a "New high-profit heavy-metal rock band". Requirements are only "Need to know 3 chords and be able to grimace musically".
Along the way Opus the Penguin gets engaged to sweetie Lola Granola, and the new Heavy Metal Group "Death-Tongue" makes their pitch in Los Angeles to recording companies, ending with a memorable visit backstage at an Ozzy Osbourne concert - back when Ozzy was the "Elvis of Heavy Metal". Back in Bloom County Steve discovers that he must give up cigarette smoking or his life expectancy is 6 months. He has Opus tie him to a chair where he is the model of self-control for 38 whole minutes before he breaks down and tells Opus "Get me a (...) cigarette before I stick you in a blender". Things get worse from there.
As in the previous volumes Breathed does a fantastic job of creating a surreal universe full of people and critters that we care about, but who are most importantly..... funny.18708700505222004-03-27B.B. just kept getting betterBloom County was without a doubt the most insightful, funny, and beloved comic strips of all time. It's rabid following has never gotten over the disappearance of Opus and the Gang from the funny papers. That's because nothing has ever been able to take it's place. Could you imagine Opus, Bill, Steve, and Milo tackling today's issues? What besides G.W. Bush and Saddam would be in the anxiety closet. Alas, we can only remember the good times.
This is one of my favorite Bloom County books. It mostly took on an issue that has always been important to me, rock n roll. The gang takes on the PMRC by forming their own metal band Deathtongue. After battling Washington though, Steve Dallas caves in and Billy and the Boingers is born.
Long live live Opus. He is sorely missed.18708700504022004-03-09Basselopes and penguins and rabbits, oh my.I've always had a slight preference for the early "Bloom County", before things got quite this surreal. Which is not to say that I don't enjoy this one; there are a great many very funny bits in here, such as Steve Dallas facing the government commission led by Tipper Gore in defense of the lyrics of the rock band "Deathtongue", which featured Opus the penguin on tuba (very appropriate for a heavy-metal band, wouldn't you say?) Hodge-Podge the rabbit on drums, Bill the Cat on electric tongue, and Steve Dallas a lead singer and songwriter. All of which is certainly pretty surreal. But sometimes it got even weirder than that, if you can believe it.
Not the best of the "Bloom County" books, and certainly not the one to start with if you aren't familiar with them, but funny and worth owning if you enjoy the series and don't have it.0316107255Penguin Dreams and Stranger Things (A Bloom County Book)0316107093Toons for Our Times: A Bloom County Book of Heavy Metal Rump 'N Roll0316103098Bloom County Babylon: Five Years of Basic Naughtiness (Bloom County)0316107352Tales Too Ticklish to Tell: Bloom County0316107387Night of the Mary Kay Commandos Featuring Smell O-Toons4466General4456Humor86Entertainment1000Subjects283155Books400272011Paperback394184011Mass Market401237011Trade394174011Binding (binding)388186011Refinements283155Books618083011Printed Books618072011Format (feature_browse-bin)388186011Refinements283155Books0847825175http://www.amazon.com/Brown-Derby-Restaurant-Sally-Wright/dp/0847825175%3FSubscriptionId%3D05ERXYTS89KFGEPQR5G2%26tag%3Dthebookrevi0b-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3D08478251752259031http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/61SQV87G82L._SL75_.jpg7575http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/61SQV87G82L._SL160_.jpg160160http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/61SQV87G82L.jpg474475Sally Wright CobbPaperback64197808478251720847825175EnglishEnglishEnglish1995USD$19.95Rizzoli Publications1160Book2005-02-28Rizzoli PublicationsRizzoli PublicationsBrown Derby Restaurant22582USD$225.820300005.09208478251754002006-08-10First Stop in Hollywood - The Brown DerbyI have been intrigued with the idea of having a meal at The Brown Derby since the first time I saw Lucille Ball dump a plate of spaghetti (a classic Derby dish, as it turns out) on William Holden's head. Alas, the era of The Derby is long gone, but this book, Brown Derby Restaurant takes you on a journey back in time when stars table hopped and coveted having their famous faces caricatured to grace the walls of these distinctive restaurants. That's right, there wasn't just one "Derby" but many different versions of the original, which is something I did not know until I read this book. I'll let the next reader of this book discover for themselves all the different incarnations of "The Derby." That was quite interesting, because they were all so different from one another and completely different from the original. The photographs of the celebrity patrons are wonderful and its fun to see them out socializing and not in character.
In the text recipes from the restaurants are included. I found these recipes to be quite ordinary and not very imaginative, but then you have to realize the era and the clientle. Just because Gary Cooper, Myrna Loy (Native Montanians), Carole Lombard, (Indiana), Clark Gable, (O-o-o-ohio!), and Robert Mitchum (Connecticut), were glamorous moviestars, in the end they were simple folk who probably just wanted a decent pork chop. At the Derby restaurants, they could do that. I wouldn't go out of my way to reinact any of these recipes unless I was babysitting a finicky toddler. All in all, this was a real page turner though and my husband enjoyed it as well. 08478251754442006-01-19Where's George???Who today could know anything about the Brown Derby restaurant and not immediately recall what generated its legendary fame? Was it the food? The service? The décor? The clientele? Of course it's a given that all these were truly exceptional, yet none adequately explains how any Tom, Dick, or Harry from Kalamazoo would be so well acquainted with the name of this particular restaurant. After all, they were not patrons. For us non-celebrities, the Brown Derby probably entered our world through the hilarious exploits of Lucille Ball in the television situation comedy "I Love Lucy" in which she starred along with husband Desi Arnaz. Who can forget Lucy's attempts to be "discovered" by a studio executive, or to get a closer look at William Holden, at the Brown Derby?

If you lived in greater Los Angeles at that time, you might have heard live KNX 1070 News Radio broadcasts at noon from the Brown Derby, and the question of the day would always be, "Tell us, George, who's at the Brown Derby today?" That was how Lucy knew which celebrities were at the Brown Derby. And, because Lucy knew, all of America knew: this Brown Derby restaurant was the stars' favorite gathering place.

So, what's the point of this review? Simply the sad fact that "George," the maître d', radio announcer, friend of Robert Cobb, and the central figure to all the famous patrons at the Brown Derby restaurant, is no where to be seen in any of the multitude of celebrity photographs in the book. It had to be the most deliberative, vexing, and laborious part of Mrs. Cobb's work in producing this incomplete book to find enough photographs that somehow did not show a trace of Mr. George Aguilera among the celebrity patrons. It was no oversight. Word is that following Mr. Cobb's death, major differences arose between the Head Waiter and Mrs. Cobb as to business practices, and that Mr. Aguilera took an uncompromising stand in favor of maintaining the renowned level of quality, rather than to expand the tourist element, and in so doing, risk losing the exceptional level of service of which he was justifiably proud to offer his friends. This book is testament to the bitter parting of ways that resulted. How ironic then, that Mr. Aguilera's face, commonly seen on Brown Derby advertising billboards that said, "Go see George...," appears nowhere in this book of photographs. Nor will you find any evidence that the man who announced to the world the presence of his famous dining guests, his friends, was ever there himself. I rate this book as missing at least one star.

The photos are from the late Sally and Bob Cobb's personal photo collection and some photos were taken by Geroge Hurrell. The stories are captivating, heart warming and a part of Hollywood history that is a must for movie buffs and the novice a like. Clark Gable and Bob Cobb spent many years together, hunting and fishing. One night after the kitchen at the Durby was closed, Bob mixed a salad together made mostly from left overs. Since that night the famous salad has been referred to as the "Cobb Salad". The story that best describes the Cobbs is the one story about the WWII soldier..very touching! A great gift or a nice coffee table conversation item! The heart of Hollywood when Hollywood defined glamour, romance and sophistication, The Brown Derby was once the most famous restaurant in the world. Sinatra, Davis, Bogart, Tracy, Olivier, and Leigh dined, partied and romanced at its tables. The Cobb salad was created here, and its location, at Hollywood and Vine, has become part of the vernacular. Sally Wright Cobb remembers the heyday of the restaurant her husband founded in this richly illustrated cookbook and Hollywood memoir. Reproduced here are dozens of drawings, photographs and menus from the restaurant's unpublished archives. Many of the Derby's signature dishes are included, most notably, Cobb Salad.
A luscious, nostalgic scrapbook, The Brown Derby Restaurant celebrates a legendary place and a lost and elegant age1887664564A Gallery of Stars: The Story of the Hollywood Brown Derby Wall of Fame188331822XHollywood Du Jour: Lost Recipes of Legendary Hollywood Haunts1883318238Chasen'S, Where Hollywood Dined: Recipes and MemoriesB000VE4UCEWalt Disney Treasures - Disneyland - Secrets, Stories & Magic (Collector's Tin)B000HEWEDKForbidden Planet (Two-Disc Special Edition)4307General4300U.S. Regional4262Regional & International6Cooking, Food & Wine1000Subjects283155Books713215011General AAS4300U.S. Regional4262Regional & International6Cooking, Food & Wine1000Subjects283155Books4233General6Cooking, Food & Wine1000Subjects283155Books713205011General AAS6Cooking, Food & Wine1000Subjects283155Books400272011Paperback394184011Mass Market401237011Trade394174011Binding (binding)388186011Refinements283155Books618083011Printed Books618072011Format (feature_browse-bin)388186011Refinements283155Books1886228728http://www.amazon.com/Browns-Town-1964-Cleveland-Championship/dp/1886228728%3FSubscriptionId%3D05ERXYTS89KFGEPQR5G2%26tag%3Dthebookrevi0b-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3D1886228728736842http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/517V0PDFDSL._SL75_.jpg7549http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/517V0PDFDSL._SL160_.jpg160104http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/517V0PDFDSL.jpg500324Terry PlutoPaperback796.33264097713297818862287261001886228728EnglishEnglishEnglish8301495USD$14.95Gray & Company Publishers1320Book2003-08Gray & Company PublishersGray & Company PublishersBrowns Town 1964: The Cleveland Browns and the 1964 Championship711364228725805501026USD$10.26475USD$4.751580011ATVPDKIKX0DERhttp://www.amazon.com/gp/help/seller/home.html?seller=ATVPDKIKX0DERNewnew0GTfB7SUdb6Wb0iW%2BGsHdltW4oCCbNzPK%2FZIamdaUIMfnH91UbPHKgb3vq2o0m1k79c76Sb0QWAZagjhzJQRag%3D%3D1196USD$11.96Usually ships in 24 hours5.09218862287285112008-08-23Pluto's Best BookWhat a book! It takes you back in time to when the Browns were not only part of the fabric of Ohio, but also the team that captured every heart. The section on the training camp and the players sneaking off to a local gas station is worth the price of the book alone. It was a special time and this book captures it beautifully.
I read it, loved it, and gave it to my Dad and he practically read it in one night.
18862287285002006-10-03Very good book for a Browns' fan of the timesI was a huge Browns' fan growing up, even though I lived about 5 hours away from Cleveland. When the Browns lost on a Sunday, I had a miserable week and couldn't wait until 1 o'clock the next Sunday. Ah, the joy of growing up.

I learned a lot about the Browns that I never knew before about Paul Brown, Art Modell, Blanton Collier and the whole team. What memories it brought back. If you were a fan of that era by all means read this book.

Five years ago upon visiting the midwest I stopped in Cleveland to see a game and visit Jacobs Field. That Sunday morning I drove out to see the remains of League Park because that's where the Browns had their practices. League Park is arguably in the worse part of any town that I've ever visited a ballpark (and I've seen 150-200), but boy was it worth it. Too bad so little remains of the ballpark, but I have a baseball book describing and picturing League Park.18862287285002004-11-12One of the most important football books of this generationPluto has done it again. This book, especially the second half, is a must-read for any Browns fan. Pluto's compelling take on the last Cleveland championship is loaded with information that cannot be found elsewhere. If you're a Browns fan, this book, if nothing else, needs to be in your collection.18862287284222003-02-26CommendableFor me, the acid test of books like these is whether they manage to engage the neutral. Certainly Browns fans will enjoy this pleasant wallow in nostalgia from a time when football was still football.
I'm not a Browns fan but I found myself wallowing along with them. Pluto manages to capture the essence of the '64 season and yet not neglect the wider context. Fascinating stuff.18862287285122001-05-18GRRRRRRRRRRRRREAT!THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS I HAVE EVER READ IN MY ENTIRE LIFEThey were Cleveland’s last champions.
They were a team of men in the truest sense of the words, men who didn’t expect to be coddled, men who didn’t believe the world should genuflect at the mere mention of their names.
They had the greatest running back in the history of football, and a coach who wore a hearing aid. Their quarterback had a Ph.D. in math. They had a defensive end who was a preacher, and a halfback who became a millionaire. Together, they won it all.
These were the 1964 Cleveland Browns.
Back before Free Agency, before shoe contracts and end zone dances, football was a tough game played by men who loved it. They had real jobs in the off season, as insurance salesmen or manufacturers’ representatives, and they lived in the community where they played. They were grateful to the fans for their support and believed that nothing they accomplished was important unless the team won.
In this nostalgic look back, sportswriter Terry Pluto tells the remarkable story of the upstart AFC Cleveland Browns’ surprise championship victory over the hugely favored Baltimore Colts and the colorful players who made that season so memorable. He takes us through the entire 1964 season from training camp at Hiram College to the championship game in Municipal Stadium. Along the way he recreates an era and a team for which pride was not just a slogan. The tough, blue-collar city of Cleveland loved its football team, the Browns (named after beloved coach Paul Brown). During their heyday in the late 1940s and 1950s, the Browns muscled their way into several championships and the hearts and minds of the fans. Even after change came in the 1960s with a new owner, Art Modell, and the forced retirement of Coach Brown, the team continued to flourish. When All The World Was Browns Town remembers those years, capped by the championship season in 1964, and juxtaposes this relatively innocent time with the present. Now the Browns are in Baltimore, moved by owner Modell, and renamed the Ravens. The money in big-time professional sports ultimately had its way with a town that was fanatical about football and its storied team. 1589793609The Best Show in Football: The 1946-1955 Cleveland Browns--Pro Football's Greatest Dynasty1886228310On Being Brown: What It Means to Be a Cleveland Browns Fan1598510355The Curse of Rocky Colavito: A Loving Look at a Thirty-Year Slump1886228884False Start: How The New Browns Were Set Up To Fail1598510436Browns Scrapbook: A Fond Look Back at Five Decades of Football, from a Legendary Cleveland Sportswriter193918Professional16378Football (American)26Sports1000Subjects283155Books193916General16378Football (American)26Sports1000Subjects283155Books713761011General AAS16378Football (American)26Sports1000Subjects283155Books16602History of Sports16596Miscellaneous26Sports1000Subjects283155Books11086921General26Sports1000Subjects283155Books713751011General AAS26Sports1000Subjects283155Books400272011Paperback394184011Mass Market401237011Trade394174011Binding (binding)388186011Refinements283155Books618083011Printed Books618072011Format (feature_browse-bin)388186011Refinements283155BooksB000QTD63Shttp://www.amazon.com/By-the-Rivers-of-Babylon/dp/B000QTD63S%3FSubscriptionId%3D05ERXYTS89KFGEPQR5G2%26tag%3Dthebookrevi0b-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3DB000QTD63S60108http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41lAAynx9WL._SL75_.jpg7556http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41lAAynx9WL._SL160_.jpg160120http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41lAAynx9WL.jpg300225Cindy Brown AustinKindle Edition813.6Kindle BookEnglish1199USD$11.99Strebor Ebooks1384eBooks2007-04-17Strebor Ebooks2007-04-17Strebor EbooksBy the Rivers of Babylon959USD$9.59100011ATVPDKIKX0DERhttp://www.amazon.com/gp/help/seller/home.html?seller=ATVPDKIKX0DERNewnewZr7An7ZallzfNp3Nitph05WtIniONVPN2dS7XRfT1ub7RlF%2BxP95MDZUJOlenTfNVDZMIUip0P%2FTdKWWA66bUw%3D%3D959USD$9.59Usually ships in 24 hours5.092B000QTD63S5002008-10-02Great Reading By the River of Babylon is so intriging it's almost like you are there. What would have to be sacrificed? By the Rivers of Babylon Cindy Brown Austin answers these queries in a riveting fashion with enough twists and curves for subplots to truly make it a character-driven delight. Moreover, it's a street-wise adaptation of life full of the type of mayhem that defines what it means to be in control of money, drugs, and the aftermath after the smoke clears.
Lincoln Duval is a ruthless Drug Lord that adapted to the wiles of the trade early and often to achieve a legendary reputation by controlling people, circumstances, and destiny through both force and guile - until his heart betrayed him! Enter Gabriella Sinclair, an astute Christian journalist that plays havoc with his psyche -- so much so that it threatens to dismantle his entire organization, and creates dissention among the ranks after he falls in love with her. Iniquity and benevolence are not good mixes when one is forced to serve and acknowledge one master. Lincoln struggles, but manages to give us an intrusive picture of his inner self - thanks to the pen of Ms Austin.

The storyline is simple but gains poignancy in how the main character gains notoriety by moving up in the ranks. I especially like the way Ms Austin fused a labyrinth of contrast by giving readers balance in depicting the underbelly of how one several characters are reactionary to the environment that crime creates. What makes this story so compelling is how she connected the sensibilities of love, deception, amid the unpredictability of slippery footing without losing step with continuity. The story moves moderately along with enough pauses for dramatic effect.

Not only does Gabriella invade his heart, she becomes much more than a secondary figure and commands her own space for relevance. The secondary characters are meshed interchangeably due to timely appearances in individual chapters adding intrigue to the drama. Redemptive value can be justified in this case to save a soul, especially when we are given a great story to sit back and enjoy. Cindy Brown Austin brought it and gave flavor to a setting that is not often so prevalent and displayed more in Urban Fiction. I rated the book five stars out 5, and would strongly suggest that you buy and add this book to your collection!
B000QTD63S5002008-01-23Awesome ReadBy the Rivers of Babylon is a fast paced well written novel which marries "Urban" or "Street" Lit with a low key, yet powerful Christian theme. Not preachy or judgmental, this tastefully written story unfolds in a mesmerizing, and seamless flow. The main character, a woman reporter by the name of Gabriella Sinclaire, meets and falls in love with Lincoln Duvall, a notorious criminal, murderer and drug kingpin. Cindy Brown Austin has created in Lincoln Duvall the ultimate sexy bad guy. This man is so fine, every red-blooded girl- Christian or otherwise- will fantasize about his looks, his clothing, his charisma. But, the things he does, and the people he hurts--ah---what a tragedy.

Gabriella is a Christian girl who grew up and then away from the hood, loves God, and is celibate. The two meet, and we see their love unfold in a manner that could only have been pre-ordained since the beginning of time. Supernatural powers come into play in this tale of money, power, betrayal, lust, corruption and love. On a scale of one to ten, this is definitely a ten, due to Ms. Austin's astute grasp of street culture, her deft portrayal of character, her in-depth depiction of the unique ways in which black folks relate and her sophisticated writing style.
B000QTD63S5002007-12-17Honest, True FictionThis emotionally entwining fiction could also be many people's real lives. Dealing with several of the most contentious issues in our current society, this story bears on the conscience of all political, religious and ethnic groups by addressing the heart of the matter. What does it take to live truly while having the very core of your lives tested, tormented?

All of that swirls around two boys that grew up in the hard ghetto and both aspire to be preachers in their early childhood. Both extremely intelligent, handsome and able. Both avoid the pulpit when they mature. One becomes a vice cop and the other a Mafioso protégé. But who is the real hypocrite? Caught in the middle of both their love for a lone woman is `Bunny' who must decide the fate of her very being, by deciding which man she truly loves and what to do about it. Caught in the middle are the readers, themselves, as they take a stark view of religious hypocrisy, moral vice/integrity and where truth really resides in peace.

There are those kind of `religious' stories which bore one with there cookie-cutter plots and lines and patronizations. You will find none of that in this most excellent tale. There is no prescription, no magic wand of religion waved here. Yet, deep between their lives, is a gut wrenching faith wrung out of the pains and revelations within this story that I had to read above all the other many important tasks of my day. It was a truly enjoyable experience and I recommend this novel to all folks, young and old. It would be most excellent as part of any literature curriculum.
Call of the Tree: The legacy from the Tree of Life as passed down through generations to the unknown... (Faith Walker)B000QTD63S5002007-06-25respect, dignity and mutual protectionDay after day of despair, denigration, danger in an arching echo of violence and death by gun, knife, suicide and emotional fatigue; cement blocks in a built environment of din and no win; metal encased doors, multiple locks, industrial plumbing, broken elevators, and stairwells of terror...the hot stale air of a ramshackle Third Ward apartment...Hell with the lid lifted. In this maze one finds families, children, old people, calculated courting, loneliness, mind-numbing boredom, unchallenged spirit, wit and creativity channeled into a survival game; lost souls looking for love in all the wrong places, beaten down psyches self-enslaved to the "Dude of the Moment." The anti-hero reigns...but is that all there is?

This stark question and its answer is folded in these 358 pages of a breathtaking and fast paced journey into the dynamics of a wrenching love story seeded on the banks of a dark river snaking through a bleak housing project in the urban backyard of American politics.

Brown-Austin's book is loaded with slick semiotics, parody, pain, bravado and yearning, yearning for what? The hapless context almost overwhelms the possibility of even the slightest redemption; a fragile hope of reaching the sweet golden shores of Beulah land; finding normalcy on the lip of a volcano - miraculously, love steps out of the shadows, swims past the waves of lust and bitterness in reaching the promised land of love on par between a man and a woman - respect, dignity and mutual protection. An incredulously slippery route clogged with dead ends, sharp curves guarded by the inverted ritual of face and strut; bad-ass, casual stance, diamond glance, schooled indifference, muscle-bound ebony capable of rendering a physical oblivion of lust with a demand for more, and more, and more. Brown-Austin's primo characters are captivating: Alexander Lincoln Duvall is checkmated by a mysterious undulating river-of-a-woman, Gabriella...like the Angel!

This book is not a book for the florid love story crowd. It serves up a gory autopsy of gang violence, and machismo choking the very life out of a low-level rat as a lesson to the big cats hiding in the shadows. You want a love story that includes "A black panther-man with sequins for eyes" and an "Angelfied" woman capable of enveloping all and any insecurities a dude might be hiding? With the need for gamesmanship abandoned, their love flame flares from blue to indigo, embracing the stars. Go for it; it will knock the socks off your insomnia hours.

Every few years I purchase a revised version just to be sure that laws haven't changed that I should know about. This book is a must if you have rentals in California. It is very easy to understand, it has all the forms you may need on CD and can be referred to quickly when questions come up. I feel I am a better landlord because of this book. I have also loaned it to my friends when they felt that their landlord had not be treating them fairly. They also found it very helpful. I wouldn't be without it. 08733758155002006-07-27Very useful and practical handbook for LandlordsI read through the book before renting my place, and it provided me with very useful tips on the legality of various aspects of renting one's place. The NOLO books are written by lawyers for lay people.
The "California Landlord's Law Book: Rights and Responsibilities" covers all ground and gives you more than a legal or business understanding of real estate rental (rare but detrimental scenarios and important topics are discussed, such as Discrimination, Self-Help Evictions, Landlord's Liabilities for Dangerous Conditions and Criminal Acts, etc.)

This law book also contains all the forms you will need, both at the end as apendix and on a CD. That work became "Paradise Lost". However, the epic as a form was ot be greatly endangered by a new literary style that was to emerge just a few decades after Milton's death: the novel. With an exquisite, gradual stroke, Daniel Defoe slew the epic as the great long-form narrative. Within a century, the novel had become the engine of high literature, and the epic, along with poetry in general to a great extent, was relegated to a niche (not only that, but trends in poetic form skewed away from the verse styles normally used). By the time American poet Stephen Vincent Benet wrote "John Brown's Body" in the 1920s, the literary world had long since passed the form by. Benet, chronicling the history of the American Civil War, demonstrates why the epic still deserves our attention.

Benet casts a wide net with his storytelling choices, bringing in a mix of historical figures (Lincoln, Davis, and the various generals, Lee most of all) and fictional characters who embody various viewpoints: while the real men all get moments either of description or internal monologue (Lee is described, for example; indeed, Benet makes a point of how there is much about him that we do not understand, especially the unknown nature of his wants), the character arcs and the main plots revolve around the fictional characters. There is Jack Ellyat, a Union soldier; Clay Wingate, a young Southern aristocrat who similarly goes to war; Melora Villas and Sally Dupre, the women they love (Melora being a frontier woman, Sally a Southern belle); various other soldiers and women; and a few slave characters, such as Wingate's loyal servant Cudjo and the runaway slave Spade. On the subject of the blacks, Benet makes a point that his "heart is too white" to really tell their story, but all the same he does a laudable job of recognizing the complexities of the southern slave system, a barbaric cruelty that all the same produced some enduring emotional ties between people that make little sense to us. He also reminds us that the North, while wanting to free the slaves (though this was ultimately up for grabs; Lincoln is given a revealing dialogue to the Almighty about whether or not he should release the Emancipation Proclamation), was not a bastion of racial equality. There is a final scene between a white Pennsylvania veteran and Spade that suggests a grudging briding of worlds through shared war experience.

Benet employs various different verse styles in the course of the poem, from rhyming couplets to ABAB rhymes to free verse without rhyme and limited metre, to prose on a couple of occasions. These shifts allow for rotations between buoyancy and starkness, as suited to individual scenes. Some characters, such as Clay Wingate, consistently employ one sort of poetic form. My two favourite passages in the poem are done in a rhyming style: the wind's prophecy of the thirteen sisters (an allegory of the breakup of the Union) and 'John Brown's Prayer', a brilliant dissection of Brown's conflicted mind.
This is a lengthy read, but very worthwhile; take a look and see how the Greeks' highest poetic form endures.B000856UQU5222007-03-29A forgotten poetI first read John Brown's Body, the book length poem chronicling the Civil War in high school in the forties. It was my first exposure to narrative poetry and it has been my favorite book since then. When I read twenty years later that it was also the favorite book of John F. Kennedy it reassured me that he would avoid war at all costs. It is an anti-war story, and the devastation of war, the profiles of the all too human generals and of Lincoln are an important footnote of history. The poetry is musical and sometimes stark. He is able to impart the real devastation of war on the lives of those affected by it. I would reccommend it to anyone who loves poetry and history. It is a truly American story of a war that should never have been fought.B000856UQU5122006-12-08Just excellent! The reviews below say it well. I re-read parts of this every few months - not to refresh my knowledge of the civil war, but to re-fresh my awareness of life. This guy helps you SEE the real life going on around you. And his use of words is often just delicious. It is a masterpiece.B000856UQU33122006-08-23Distorted view of Civil War historyWhile it is a staggering work of American poetry, John Brown's Body should not - and must not - be considered a factual account of the Civil War period. Like most Civil War works published in the 1920s - the period that saw the rise of Jim Crow and the rebirth of the KKK - Benet's "epic" seeks to distract readers from the role slavery played in sparking the war. If we admit that slavery sparked the war, then we admit that blacks were important enough for whites to fight and die for. And in the 1920s, social pressures in the United States were aimed toward disempowering blacks. Proponents of the "Lost Cause" mentality will argue that the Civil War was fought not over slavery, but rather over states' rights. But states' rights to do what? Keep slaves, of course. Appreciate this book for its contribution to poetry. Do no appreciate it for its views on the Civil War.B000856UQU523252001-05-13An Epic of Great MagnitudeWhen Stephen Vincent Benet finished John Brown's Body in 1928 and the critics awaited its issue, the South was most anxious and skeptical that they would be portrayed honestly. They were and Stephen Benet's masterpiece is America's greatest epic poem and a most unappreciated work of literature. But, I love it and always will love it, because it makes those historic figures of so long ago - come alive. Out of the mist, they ride. Come traveler, pick it up, open its pages and from fish hook Gettysburg to the end, watch them ride and try to understand over all the years what was happening and why they were fighting. It was not all about Slavery! One of the most widely read poems of our time--a masterful retelling of the American Civil War.
