An Existential Approach to Psychological Assessment
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2005-12-08
If you have ever had your own reservations about the nature and use of assessment in contemporary clinical practice, thinking it involves unequal power dynamics, focuses on abstract generalities rather rich individualized descriptions, and alienates and objectifies the client rather than serves the client as a means for growth and therapeutic insight, maybe it is time to learn Constance Fischer's individualized human science approach to assessment. Constance was one of the pioneers in developing an existential phenomenological approach to assessment and this book is like a manual for how to put the human being back into the assessment report. The book gives an overview of the critiques of the assumptions of natural scientific assessment, clearing a space for this alternative approach. It then goes on to provide principles for conducting collaborative and individualized assessments that are rooted in the client's life-world. It teaches the clinician how to bring life back into the assessment report through particular attunements, practices and writing styles. The approach to assessment developed here is sophisticated, yet simple, warm, yet effective. It firmly roots assessment practices and outcomes within an existential phenomenological philosophy of the human being, which it makes clear and practical in a deceptively simple yet profound everyday language.

The subject of the book, Brooks Stevens, had an amazing career spanning decades. He lived in Milwaukee working for industrial giants but his influence spread far outside the Midwest. This book has wonderful essays, entries on specific design projects and great photos. The writing makes it interesting with anecdotal information and excerpts from Brooks Stevens.

This book offers exactly what western pyschology needs, diversity. Not one branch of any psychology is perfectly useful. What this book shows are the missing parts in western psychology, topics ranging from ayurveda, yoga, tai chi, buddhist techniques(non-religous)plus many other literature often misunderstood by western minds as well as unheard of but extremely useful facts of life largely neglected in psychology. This book shows psychologists/counselors/educators a way of joining together and keeping in mind all aspects of therapy while learning for him/herself the nature of human life. This book shows all readers exactly what's missing in the domain of psychology. 'Why it's missing' is another story, but 'what is being missed' this book gives a great overview of that. Being an integrative helper involves ceasing ignorance of other worlds' psychologies. Dr. Mikulas is a trustworthy source on these topics, he manages to describe these world psychologies without distortion or inflammation. His reference pages are exteremly thorough and useful. I recommend this book to all psychologists, or anyone interested in this topic or psychologies of the world. Let the book speak for itself.

I was pleased to bump into Barbara Brooks Wallace's book again on Amazon. I'd read it a few years ago and was charmed by it and its wonderful fantasy characters. It rates up there with Roald Dahl's books. How nice to know it's back in print!

I studied this book, and it was fantastic! When I picked this book up, it had been awhile since I'd taken a math class. I was going back to college, and I didn't want to have to take Algebra all over again, so I reviewed Algebra extensively, using this book. When I took Precalculus classes, I encountered subject matter from time to time that I hadn't seen for quite awhile. Often, my recollection of such material was shaky, so I'd review it in this book again, and get back up to speed. I got an A in both classes.

Interviewing in Action in a Multicultural World (with DVD)

I can honestly say I never thought I would be excited to read a textbook, but Interviewing in Action is an amazing text. Although I have had over ten years of experience in the human services field, I had gaps in my skill set that I wasn't aware of. Murphy and Dillon's book present's all aspects of interviewing in an accessible and easy to follow manner.

Moreover, Interviewing in Action includes and amazing supplemental video (improved from the previous VHS version, it includes a DVD with updated content so it's easier for students to watch it directly on their computer. Interviewing in action provides individuals with the opportunity to observe seasoned interviewers at work. You learn not only from their success, but from their mistakes as well. The video presents and open and realistic view of client/clinician experience.

I also like how the book talks about self-care, ethical issues, and provides a small resource guide to help you start relevant discussions that build off the class exercises included in the book.

In my current work as a mediator for a county facility, my coworkers and co-mediators frequently comment on the skill with which I interview my clients. Naturally, I owe partial credit to my instructor; however, Interviewing in Action provided me with the client focused perspective needed to be successful.

This book will benefit anyone in the Human Service disciplines, including Human Resources, Psychology, Social Work, and, naturally, Human Services. I highly recommend this book and commend Bianca Cody Murphy and Carolyn Dillon for taking care to revise it only when there is something important to add, instead of revising it simply for additional profit.

I highly recommend this book.

A passionate and lucid look at psychodynamic treatment.

A passionate and lucid introduction to a contemporary model of treatment. The authors' commitment to and advocacy of their point of view provide for an illuminating discussion, whether or not one agrees with their conclusions, and the book should be especially useful to beginning therapists interested in exploring the psychodynamic perspectives.
