The most effective (and easy) way to learn statistics
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2005-07-11
For a while, I was looking for a good book on statistics, and finally, I found it! This book is excellent for those who are going to start learning statistics (every thing is explained very well from very beginning!) as well as for those (like me) who look for more advanced books. It is almost perfect! It has precise and clear explanations, simple brief examples, thoughtfully chosen questions and tasks at the end of each chapter, good overall organization. Every word (well, sentence) contributes to understanding of concepts, no unnecessary information, no waste of time. Every new concept is built on the previous ones, no gaps in explanation, no unanswered questions. It feels as if the author follows a reader's mind, if some questions arise they get answered in the next paragraphs. Pure pleasure! Ultimate book on statistics! Highly recommend.

Great Manual - Biased Opinion

I really believe that this is a great manual for use in the lab. Of course maybe it's because one of the graphic designers and illustrators is my son. And the picture used is one that he took. Congratulations on your first publication.

Excellent self-study guide for medical terminolgy exam
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 2001-08-09
I bought this book to study for my med.term. exam without having to take an extra class. I found the book to be extremely helpful and well written. La Fleur-Brooks does a good job of working through all the bodily system in a very comprehensive way. There is alot of repetition throughout the book so come ch. 16 you can still remember what went on in ch. 2. Also, the addition of the flashcards was an extra bonus. While there are alot, they make it easier to retain what was learned. The book was also good for a review of the human anatomy and made it possible to visualize the words I was learning. The hard part was learning the words not built from word roots...there were no flashcards for them so that required a little more effort.

Interactive resource for Sensation & Perception
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2001-04-23
This book on 'sensation and perception' goes very well complemented with the other textbook on Goldstein (1996) Sensation & Perception. Ryan, C. 'exploring perception' is also complements well with Gazzaniga et al(1998) Cognitive Neuroscience - The Biology of the Mind = topics related to cognition, perception & encoding & higher perception functions.

Written by a James Cook Uni (Aust) Professor, 'exploring perception' comes with a interactive CD-ROM that is user friendly, the textbook serves as a reference to the CD-Rom. But when I purchase the package, I prefer to view the CD-Rom first, and I really learn much more as compared to the textbook as I am rather tired of reading books sometimes.... The CD-Rom has interactive modules related to 'physiological bases of perception', 'form, pattern & movement', 'perceiving colour', 'depth, size, brightness & contrast', 'phychophysics' - the modules are seggregated into eight units related to respective modules. It comes with tutorial questions as well, and the most interactive and attractive of all ----- there are sound commentary description of each experimental illustration as well as 'do-it-yourself' illustration from each individual unit experimentations.

'Exploring Perception' & 'Sensation & Perception' are specialised fields which are valuable tools to contributing to understanding and development of visual aid equipments related to 'Engineering Psychology' or 'Human Ergonomics', esp for the development of V-R equipments such as for people with visual difficulties etc., An interactive CD-Rom in 'Sensation & Perception' - I call it ! -worth keeping as a learning foundation for S/P & a reference !

The complexities of Family Science simplified
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2001-06-01
I have studied Family Science for several years and have many times become frustrated with the complexities involved in abstract ideas such as the theories and vocabulary used by family scientists. Wesley Burr's book is a wonderful text for both the advanced family researcher and those who simply want to better understand their own family, why they are the way they are, and what they can do to help overcome problems or unhealthy traditions that have been passed on for generations. Burr uses simplistic language to describe in detail complex ideas. He uses tons of examples and illustrations and gives the reader a feel of "oh, that reminds me of my family!" I felt it was an excellent book, and after having read it, I felt like I had come away with vast amounts of useful new knowledge.
