Thorough treatment of the counseling process.Review Date: 2003-12-03
Drs. Patterson and Welfel have put together a text that is a cogent, yet thorough treatment of the counseling process. As Dr. Welfel shared with our class one time "Counseling is not something you do to someone."
These authors have made an excellent contribution to the literature with their in-depth exploration of an integrated, three stage model that is easy to understand. Client-centered in its approach, this model adds rhyme and reason to what we do and it gives us an appreciation of where the client is at now, and how to listen to him/her to help develop goals.

Crisis Management Expertise In Your Back PocketReview Date: 2000-05-10
If you want to learn how to help people manage crisis situations, you can spend a few hundred dollars and two days sitting in an uncomfortable chair straining to see unintellegible overheads and listening to a charismatic sage on the stage. You can spend a hundred dollars on a text that catalogues the details about every manner of client problem and how to address those details. You'd be much better served by reading this book and keeping it close as an accessible reference about how to really help people.
This is an excellent book about the nuts-and-bolts or how to help people when they're experiencing crises. Although this book provides a clear understanding of the theoretical underpinnings of crisis management, the primary focus is on techniques of helping and the concrete aspects of interacting effectively with people that are hurting. This is a book for those who want to "do" rather than just think about doing. Crisis Management and Brief Treatment: Theory, Technique, and Applications is not the comprehensive treatise that other handbooks aspire to be. It is an affordable, readable guide for those who want to get on to the business of helping. As with other interpersonal interventions, one needs to understand the concepts or theories of the intervention, one needs to identify the specific techniques of associated with operationalizing those techniques, and one needs to know how to adapt those techniques and skills to the specific people and situation of immediate concern. This concise text is THE book to guide the reader in this process.
Do your friends or clients a favor. Buy this book and learn how to help them when they're really hurting.
