Sweitzer and King have written one of the most comprehensive guides to help students make the most out of their internship experiences. They cram more than enough techniques, resources and advice to help a student problem solve through one of the strangest places on earth: an office. The book is intended to be a text for students but it will more likely be used by internship coordinators who need to develop training modules or programs to prepare students for internships. The authors effectively blend relevant components of student development, career development, experiential education and human resources within a model that predicts the typical internship experience.

From my experience, it's not uncommon for my interns to recall how the book predicted the experiences they are currently going through and returning to it when they encounter problems. Compared to students who aren't familiar with the internship stages, they are better capable of managing their anxiety and taking control of their internships.

The only downside to this book is that for some reason it's intended for students who are performing field study for clinicals, however much of the book is applicable for internships in any discipline. This book is highly recommended for interns or the career services practitioner.

I used this book to help guide me through my internship for Social Work. I found it to be a great help in how I was able to see myself working professionally throughout my internship. This text let me know that experiences I went through were normal and that I was not going crazing or doing things wrong. Things that happened were normal and expected. My supervisor was very supportive during my internship with his agency even though I was having difficulties at times and I now know this is because he already knew that I would experience them. I knew from reading the text that client interaction would at times be difficult and my feelings with them could cross over personally and I had to be aware of my professionalism. I have really enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone who is involved in an internship. I find it vital to help one understand how they are doing in their internship and how normal things are that are happening to them during there internship.

The twenty-five poems that comprise this chapbook glitter with a strange and compelling mixture of Catholic imagery and contemporary concerns. It's as if these poems were forged in some kind of hallucinatory limbo state, as they bear witness to human atrocities large and small yet still strive -- despite pain, suffering, and numbness -- for life and hope. The collection conveys a clear sense of what contemporary women are up against, from internalized pressures to be thin and perfect (often conveyed through memories of the speaker's mother) to external dangers ranging from banal domesticity to life-threatening violence. Glimmerings of faith are revealed, along with elements of an evolving life philosophy. In "The Evil Eye," for instance, the speaker, having chosen a protected spot for yoga class, observes:

"I have come here not to confess my sins / but rather because I no longer care what other / people think." I love this little book! It's got dark humor, a deep understanding of the complications and power of sex and of the various addictions and complications that accompany post traumatic stress disorders. Its finely attuned sense of loss (of family, friends, innocence) and of longing, of learning to forgive the unforgivable, is beautifully wrought. If you like Six Feet Under, you'll enjoy these poems.

This is a really good, deep collection, and she's truly amazing in person. The poems speak loud and clear and are beautiful and sad, too. The author is an awesome creative writing teacher at Macomb College and has the greatest Texas voice and style. Much of this comes through in her writing. Not only is her poetry great, but so are her short stories, which she's read from several times in class and on campus and throughout Metro Detroit. This poetry chapbook is a must read and she is a must see-and-hear person to believe! She's the real thing! I see her read every chance I get. Highly recommended.

Excellent read. Companies are looking for and trying to retain the "Golden Collar" employee who is well qualified and fully prepared for real world leadership. Many are not prepared, but this book tells you what they need to do to get there. Should be a must read for all future leaders.

EPIC leadership - a clever and grounded concept. Their research brings easy to read clarity on what businesses struggle with every day - what to look for to bring honorable and high integrity leadership into our organizations. This book should be on the bookshelf of every CEO and business leader. I also hear they are as good in person as they are in writing and intend to find out.

After my wife read this book, I decided to read it as well because she said the book was filled with valuable information. I can honestly say she was right. I recommend that all women who are interested in being highly successful in business and life read this terrific book. The information is valuable to BOTH men and women and I strongly recommend this purchase. The price is well worth it. As a corporate sales manager, I have purchased the books as a training aid for my entire sales force.

A friend of mine (a woman) suggested that I take a look this book. I was skeptical at first because of the title, but I found that many of the strategies detailed in the book were just as applicable for men as for women. I was especially interested in the chapters on developing key leadership skills, building effective networks and communication. The many quotes and insights/experiences from CEOs and other senior executives were helpful to put the topics of the book into perspective - great for comparing notes. I plan to share the book with both my male and female colleagues.

Excellent and concise book for all
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2002-05-31
With little over a hundred pages and primarily written as a text for a course on skepticism, this book is deceiving on both these counts.

It is excellently organized, succinctly packed, and is brilliantly written. And most refreshing thing of all - it is neither pedantic nor overbearing. The logic and arguments are presented in layman terms and hence can be an easy introduction to people with no prior skeptical background. People with prior knowledge of the subject would definitely appreciate the insight, strength of arguments, and classification of the wide subject matter presented in a condensed form.

After I read the chapter on how word definitions (mis-)lead people into seemingly unresolvable arguments, I remembered some arguments I witnessed over the years which could have been avoided and peacefully resolved if only the participants knew that their 'language' is not precise and accurate. Hence the author shows skepticism works for us in day to day affairs equally as with strange happennings and claims.

By presenting very simple logic, the author provides insight and solves such seemingly complex problems as the Russell's paradox, without the reader even knowing the "heaviness" of the subject. He effectively uses the same simple arguments to debunk nasty pseudo-scientific claims that are draining our precious energies and resources.

In short this book is a must read for all of us.

How to analyze the paranormal

This book was used in my Psychology of the Paranormal class. It is a useful tool to help people learn to think critically about thier own thoughts and the thoughts of others. Included within it are basic fallacies, common arguments for the paranormal and against it, and other useful psychological information concerning how we make sense of the world. A must read for anyone serious about examining paranormal phenomena of any kind.

This is a good book for the amateur astronomer. The text is easy to understand and goes through the appropriate material in a logical manner without getting too bogged down in details.

"Voyages to the Stars and Galaxies" by Fraknoi, Morrison, and Wolff is one of the best introductory astronomy books I have come across. The book is marketed as a textbook for a (non-science major) college course, and as such it works great. But I also think the book would be ideal for anyone who is interested in astronomy, and wants something more substantial than what is offered in most popular astronomy books, but who also does not have the math background (or the time or inclination) for a math intensive textbook. In fact, even if you are interested in a more math intensive book, if you are new to astronomy, this might be a better starting point from which you can branch out later. The reason I say this is because the book gives such an excellent overview of astronomy, while providing very clear explanations of the underlying scientific principles. Thus you walk away from the book seeing the big picture and having a good grasp of the science behind it all. You have an excellent foundation from which to delve into more math intensive books if you so desire.

For example, consider the life of a star. A popular astronomy text will generally give you a nice description of the various stages in a star's life. Interesting, but just not enough meat for some people. A university level textbook will give you all the meat you want, but it may be difficult to see the forest through the trees so to speak. Voyages, on the other hand, gives you the descriptive overview, AND explains the scientific principles behind each stage, all without losing you in lots of math. It is a good balance.

Not that this book has no math in it. There is some, but it is generally minimal, or presented in side bars or additional problems that you can explore.

I've read other introductory astronomy texts, and none have been as consistently clear while striking the right balance for a first year college student or interested amateur.

Fabulous Biography About A Wonderful Children's Author
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2004-12-15
In the year 1899, Elwyn Brooks White, known as En to family members, and E.B. White to fans, was born. Young En adored writing from a very early age, when he first used his older brothers typewriter to spell out his name. However, it wasn't until 1911, when En was 12-years-old, and the only child left in the house - seeing as how his older brothers and sisters had all grown-up and moved out - that En truly figured out that writing was for him. After getting several short stories published in magazines, En headed off to college where he worked hard on the college newspaper, and found his English teachers to be a great inspiration to him. Over the years he found many wonderful jobs in the writing industry, and he kept those even after he began writing books for young readers, such as CHARLOTTE'S WEB and STUART LITTLE. This is his story.

E.B. White has been one of my favorite authors since I was five-years-old, when I got his collection of children's stories, which consisted of CHARLOTTE'S WEB, STUART LITTLE, and THE TRUMPET OF THE SWAN. Over the years I have read each of those books numerous times, so I was ecstatic to have the chance to read more about the author in this wonderful biography by David R. Collins. Collins' effort brings E.B. White to life, and will give fans of his a more in-depth look at the fabulous author. A must-read book for all who enjoy the tales that E.B. White crafted over the years.

The Grass is Always Greener... the Holes More Roomy... - a review of "Too Many Bunnies"

Despite the fact that this is basically a boardbook written for very young children (I'd say baby to toddler) my older children (especially my 4 year-old son) find it attractive. I think there is just something magically about having the bunnies hop one at a time across the little Lady Bug's front lawn from one hole to another.

Five Stars. Cute boardbook that will have you and your child turning the pages to get Chubby, Fuzzy, Floppy, Whiskers, and Bob from one hole to another. Artwork is cute. Book itself is of middle-quality; meaning that it is not one of those super strong boardbooks that hold up to drool and chewing. Toddlers will be able to rip bunnies from their holes. But a great buy anyway.

A truly wonderful story - my daughter loves it!!

This book is terrific. My husband picked in out for our 3 month old and she loves it. You must read it over and over to her and use a different voice for the different bunnies. She absolutely loves it!! It has become her favorite book and we cannot go anywhere without it. I definitely recommend it.
