A Must Have Reference Book for Mental Health Professionals
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2000-06-03
This book is a wonderful product of the Decade of the Brain. Written by two concerned professionals in the social work field, it emphasizes that the medication of patients is a true partnership between the patient and professional. Only then will many patients truly comply with the medication that they would be better off taking.

A Recommended Addition to any Social Worker's Bookshelf

In the coming years, the role of the social worker in the treatment of the mentally ill will continue to grow. Books such as this help social workers to define their roles, which are critical ones. The mentally ill deserve the very best that the social work profession has to offer. Kia Bentley and Joseph Walsh do a great job in compiling the information needed to ensure that the collaboration between the social worker and patient is an informed one. This book is a fitting start to a new century of more effective treatment of some of our most vulnerable citizens.

Beautiful Book. Good Printing. Great Writing.

For a science that has been studied for as long as there have been humans around to look at the sky, astronomy is rapidly changing. That has resulted in this the fifth edition of this book. Dr. Seeds treats Astronomy almost like a revival preacher. He clearly loves the subject and this comes through in his writing. More than anything else he wants the students to learn a bit about astronomy but to come away clearly knowing the basic principles of the scientific method and perhaps, hopefully seek a career in science.

The book is printed like a high end coffee table book. Brilliant pictures, beautiful printing, and backed up with enough text to explain what is going on. Dr. Seeds has written several astronomy texts. He has had time and feedback from them so that his explanations of fairly complex things such as Einstein's General Theory of Relativity make it seem simple.

This book is primarily on the solar system, but it gets out enough to cover the rest of the galaxy just enough to let you know just how big the universe is.

Finally, visit SETI@Home and let your computer search for signs of extraterresterial intelligence.

This book was given to me as a gift for our son. I have read it and must say that the story is very alive and full of all sorts of adventures! It keeps you wondering what is going to happen next to the main character named Jill. This little girl's imagination takes her into the world of her little flower gargen......I don't want to say too much, but it is a sweet little book that keeps you cheering for Jill!

A good book to read to your children or one that would be nice for a young girl to read. Being there to guide them would be so much more cozy!

Statistical Models in S (Wadsworth & Brooks/Cole Computer Science)

This is "the white book", an essential S-PLUS reference.
Helpful Votes: 20 out of 23 total.
Review Date: 2000-03-30
S programmers refer to this as "the white book", and it is a key reference for understanding the methods implemented in several of S-PLUS' high-end statistical functions, including 'lm()', predict()', 'design()', 'aov()', 'glm()', 'gam()', 'loess()', 'tree()', 'burl.tree()', 'nls()' and 'ms()'.

It's apparently out of print, but it shouldn't be.

Even with the recent arrival of S-PLUS releases that incorporate S version 4 and many of the ideas discussed in "the green book" (<>, also by John Chambers), this classic S reference is an indispensable tool for the serious statistician. It needs to be reissued--with a white cover, of course.

Here are the titles of the chapters, for reference:

1. An Appetizer

2. Statistical Models

3. Data for Models

4. Linear Models

5. Analysis of Variance: Designed Experiments

6. Generalized Linear Models

7. Generalized Additive Models

8. Local Regression Models

9. Tree-Based Models

10. Nonlinear Models

Simply the Best (for those who want to know what they're doing)

If you really want to know what you're doing when you use S, buy this book. Don't waste your money on a book like Venables and Ripley -- you will be sorely dissappointed, unless you just want a large collections of example calls to canned S routines. The authors of the present book, on the other hand, are Chambers and Hastie of AT&T (where S was invented), and they clearly understand the importance of detailed explanations of the theory underlying the S functions they describe. Just as important, in my opinion, they also describe the algorithms used by these functions. These two components are missing from other books (like the popular Venables and Ripley) but they are critical in order to know -- and be able to explain and justify to others -- how and why your statistical analyses were performed and what the results really mean. Any other was of doing statistics (e.g. throwing canned procedures at your data and seeing what pretty graphs and figures you can produce) is meaningless.

I found this book to be exactly what I wanted--a solid reference on process control for health care. It walked me through many key issues in statistical process control and will serve as a great reference.

This book is not for the advanced statistician by any means--but it is a good tool for use in health care by typical quality management staff.

More than expected advice regarding SPC!

I have had formal graduate education in SPC from world class leaders. But this book is a must read for anyone who performs statistical analysis for quality management, especially in the health care arena. I actually covet the Hart's advice and would declare that any reader would learn much from this reading. The tidbits of knowledge will assist the quality staff in interpretation far beyond any courses that I am aware of in the U.S. This book will make you a cut above others in your field.

I thought this was a great book! The author did a great job of spelling out examples without leaving out many steps. You shouldn't have any problem working with this book if you are a new-comer to statistics.

A GREAT BOOK!

Statistics can be a very boring subject. Most of us remember, at one time or another, taking a statistics course. One thing we all remember very well is not wanting to look at let alone read our statistics texts. Dr. Blaisdell transforms this extraordinarily dry subject into an interesting medley of mean median a la mode. Definitely recommended to any instructor trying to reduce the number of students who drop their class....

If you enjoy animals stories like "Charlotte's Web" or "Babe, the Gallant Pig" I think you'll like the Freddy books. They aren't particularly believable, but who cares? They are immensely entertaining, with a bit of light satire but no serious cynicism. And I have yet to read one that didn't have a happy ending, with the mysteries solved, the bad guys getting their come-uppance (or else reforming), and everybody living happily ever after.

I read every "Freddy" book I could get my hands on when I was a child. Now I am buying them for my grandchildren. The words "timeless and classic" do not do them justice. Every child should have the opportunity to read about Freddy and his friends!

This is a great book to have around when you run into problems with calc homework. It's nice to be able to just reach over and open this book to find a step by step solution to the problem your working on. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is using the textbook it relates to.

A Must Buy !!!!

If you want to pass your Calculus class, then buy the solution manual to the textbook. That seems like common sense but some students question whether or not they need it, or would rather pocket the extra $30. Big mistake, even if you are a math genius, which I'm not and never will be. This book not only shows you the answers to the odd problems but it goes through each step by step.
