Detailed information on the history of the Sauternes wine region and the various processes involved in the making of this sweet wine. Each cru classe is introduced before extensive notes on tastings from past memorable vintages up to the recent ones are presented. Yes, tasting notes on the 1988, 1989, and 1990 vintages are included. Chateau d'Yquem has an entire chapter devoted to it! A handy reference and a must-have for all Sauternes lovers!

The best book on Sauternes available. Excellent!

This is a fantastic book, which I have read cover to cover. It covers Sauternes, its history, the 1855 rankings, the author's rankings based on quality of wine, and a large writeup for every Chautea of worth in the region explaining the history, the wine making methods, and good and bad vintages. This book is by far the best out there, and my professor at Purdue who taught a Wine Appreciation class (Dr. Richard Vine) told me it was the best in his opinion too. Of particular interest is the history of d'Yquem which the author painstakingly covers. He also devotes a huge chapter to the winemaking methods of Sauternes (by Sauternes, I mean Barsac, Sauternes, Bommes, Preignac, etc). He explains picking methods, chapitilzation (spelling?),etc. I almost always consult this book before making a Sauternes purchase. Disappointingly, I would say only about half the time is the vintage I'm looking at covered in the book. Also, he doesn't go much beyond 1994. However, this is still the best book you can get. You WON'T be disappointed.

I'm earning my degree in counseling and will be working with adults and children who have experienced trauma. This book is excellent. It's geared toward parents and provides easy-to-read, thoughtful advice on how to talk to children about some very difficult issues. It provides typical reactions for each age group for each situation and great advice on how to speak to and reassure the child. This book will be valuable for my own library and I will definitely be recommending it to parents of young clients.

The Scared Child a must for parents and teachers

In light of the events of September 11,2001,no book could be timelier than The Scared Child by Barbara Brooks and Paula Siegel.Brooks,a clinical psychologist who specializes in treating families who have experienced traumatic life events, has written a valuable handbook for anyone who interacts with children. The Scared Child discusses the many different kinds of trauma that children may encounter in their lives. This book teaches some appropriate methods of helping children to understand and be reassured that there is support for them at a confusing and painful time in their lives. The author explains debriefing,a careful method of drawing out a child's feelings and asking questions so that the adult may calm any fears that they may have concerning the traumatic event. This guide can be easily read in its entirety to gain a comprehensive understanding of childhood trauma and debriefing or used simply to reference a specific kind of trauma. The text is well organized and gives detailed step-by-step instructions for talking with children about their ordeal. This book speaks to parents or guardians, but would be extremely useful for teachers or anyone who works with children.

Expecting a mush of barely discernible religious studies commentary, I found instead an easy-to-read, balanced discussion of especailly important scholars to me such as Reijer Hooykaas, Richard Westfall (his later work on Newton is apparently balanced and spectacular), and H. Floris Cohen.

Checking Ronald L. Numbers's p. 4. comments from Science and Christianity in Pulpit and Pew (2007), I see that his comments there are outside the pale with regards to the majority of scholars on both Westfall and Hooykaas. Where most historians science would embrace the work of the mature Hooykaas and soft-peddle the work of the young Westfall, Numbers does just the opposite. Numbers really is off his rocker a bit in his book Science and Christianity in Pulpit and Pew. No question.

Needless to say, this is a highly subject-specific bibliography, and if you ever happen to be researching on Science and Religion issues in 17th century England (primarily), it is very useful!

Charles Brooks is a master.

And here he shares his mastery with us. I was struck by the clarity, preciseness of his instructions and the depth at which he integrates sensory awareness with his spiritual practice (zazen). This book breathes with compassionate awareness.

tgis book is not about reading only. It is about experiencing. Highly recommended.

Published in the seventies and based on the workshops of Charlotte Selver, this book celebrates the return to awarenes of the senses. Written in a critical time in American historical development, the book points out the pathway to natural and self-regulating ways for growth, for freeing and encouraging the correcting mechanisms that come from within, and for more constructive and fuller living.

The author of the book points out that how we treat ourselves and our immediate enviroment has far-reaching ramifications for how we feel about ourselves, and how others perceive us. It directly affects our orientation toward our loved ones, our work, the society that surrounds us, and how we function spiritually in a universe in which commitment to psychological health and well-being is essenntial.

Sensory Awareness deals with the basics that we must all relearn: touching, walking, self-awareness, working constructively and happily, and dealing with each other joyfully. By achieving a holistic re-orientation toward ourselves and our enviroment, the flow of life is altered in positive ways, and the basis for chronic problems that beset us is eliminated.

This book is an excellent resource to help customer service employees see things from the customer's point of view. We actually use it in addition to many other books for improving the customer service skills of our managers. It is actually interesting enough to hold the attention, unlike many other customer service books.

It's a essential book guide to start the study and discussion on sexual selection and sex evolution. I highly recommend, specially for animal and human behavior college students.

How much of your behavior is ruled by sexual evolution?

I read this book in a college class. Mind you, I didn't read most of my college books, but I couldn't put this one down. It gives a clear, intelligent, remarkably well-documented, fascinating description of how sex evolved and how that evolution effects the behavior of everything from bacteria to modern social humans.

This book is very accessible to any reasonably educated reader, regardless of your knowledge of evolutionary biology. And each idea is punctuated with a fascinating example taken from nature.

Why do lightning bugs flash, and what controls the pattern to their flashing? Why are there two sexes? Why is a red sports car sexy? You'll learn the (evolutionary biology) answers to these and countless other intriguing questions. This book is a great lesson in evolution and a revealing investigation of why aniamls do the things they do, from an African hamster to... you.

Carol Tanzman has done an outstanding job in not only addressing violence/abusive behavior in schools/home but she also addresses the fears and concerns of teenagers. What a terrific communications tool to help a parent/teacher broach these issues with their teens and vise versa. Top all that with the fact that it is an entertaining read. It compels you to finish it as soon as possible.

Great read!

The Shadow Place is the first book I have read that really captures the language and issues teens deal with today. I have given it as a gift to teens I know and they have all loved it. They see traits in Lissa and Rodney that are just like them. It gave us a great forum with which to discuss issues and pressures they deal with everyday. I highly recommend it.

A sweet story with excellent pictures

My son picked this up at the library tonight and we HAD to read it before bed. All three kids crowded around and sat quietly for the whole book. I saw them looking through it many times before they went to bed.

The illustrations are excellent. All the kids commented on how much they liked them and I was equally impressed. The story was sweet and appropriate for our family (the oldest can't slow down either!) I know that this will open many talks about slowing down to see the details we miss when we run too fast.

As the 6-year-old was going to bed he pointed to the picture of the cheetah and said, "I'm going to be that guy." That's his highest compliment to a book - wanting to become one of the characters.

Read this book to any child who runs fast or moves slowly. Both will benefit from the lessons taught here.

Engaging Story, Exuberant Art!

From the publisher: Howard the cheetah loves being fast. To him, everyday is a race - and he always wins. But when Howard hurts his leg and can't run, the only animal he can keep up with is a sloth - the slowest creature around! How could anyone like being slow? It's up to Quince the sloth to show Howard how wonderful slow can be!

Erik Brooks' engaging story and exuberant art celebrate an unusual friendship as well as the beauty of life at a different pace.

A Must Have Reference Book for Mental Health Professionals
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2000-06-03
This book is a wonderful product of the Decade of the Brain. Written by two concerned professionals in the social work field, it emphasizes that the medication of patients is a true partnership between the patient and professional. Only then will many patients truly comply with the medication that they would be better off taking.

A Recommended Addition to any Social Worker's Bookshelf

In the coming years, the role of the social worker in the treatment of the mentally ill will continue to grow. Books such as this help social workers to define their roles, which are critical ones. The mentally ill deserve the very best that the social work profession has to offer. Kia Bentley and Joseph Walsh do a great job in compiling the information needed to ensure that the collaboration between the social worker and patient is an informed one. This book is a fitting start to a new century of more effective treatment of some of our most vulnerable citizens.
