This is a wonderful anthology. For its price, it is probably the best single volume anthology on the market for American theater of the last thirty-some years. These playwrights have dominated the New York Off-Broadway scene for as long as most of us can remember. If you came to New York in 1975 you would have heard the very same names. If you search the theater directory this season you will find their names, not with new works but with revivals of plays written two decades ago. This might be good for the playwrights, but is it good for the theater? Durang and Co. were first produced in edgy little theaters that were at the cutting edge of the theater. Since then these theaters have become institutions with new buildings, long lists of donors, gala openings, and corporate sponsors. Isn't it ironic that instead of producing new work, they do revivals of old-standards by Beth Henley? It is the equivalent of little theaters in the boonies doing revivals of Kauffman and Hart, Noel Coward, and Behrman. And the New York audiences are just like the little theater audiences in towns like Oklahoma city, Bakersfield and Memphis. They're all over 60, drive Cadillacs, and need hearing aids. People attending the revival of Tina Howe's play remember having seen the original production. They go, hoping to see the original cast, who are now all retired. How could this be and why? Virtually every play here anthologized has as its theme, primary or secondary, some form corruption or hypocrisy, yet none in the theater community seems to make the connection between the mega-buck donations they seek and their inability to find and produce new works as exciting as these.

This is an amazing book: Amy Goldman Koss tackles bullying head-on. She balances the heaviness of the subject with enough humor to make it not only bearable, but highly readable. The device of multiple voices is the perfect choice, giving the story depth, and guaranteeing no preaching is involved.
In a perfect world (which is surely not the one depicted in this story), the heroine would be vindicated, and justice served. But I think it's more thought-provoking and memorable this way. Hopefully, this lack of a happy ending will make readers more likely to speak up, and stand up, when a peer is being teased, mistreated, or harmed in any way; it's up to each of us to stop the cycle. An excellent read both in and out of the classroom.

Gives "Mean Girls" a run for its money!

Amy Goldman Koss gives us a great story told by eight different points of view. In a government class at school, a group of girls goes on "trial" for their bullying of a classmate they call "Poison Ivy". This story will give you the eight different points of view from each girl on the same event. Very interstingly puts you into the minds and perceptions of each narrator. See how differently these story tellers see things and learn more about human nature with each chapter. For example, Marco beleives if someone gets on your nerves, it is justifiable to be mean to them, it is a reality. Get into the minds of these characters and see just how our schools societies really are.

EVERY ROMAN CATHOLIC SHOULD READ THIS BOOK!

Review Date: 2002-06-25
As a Catholic scholar and college teacher of systematic theology I cannot stress adamantly enough the importance of "Postures of the Assembly during the Eucharistic Prayer." Without question it is the single most important book I have on my shelf. Every American Roman Catholic (including every priest and bishop) who desires to be "Traditional" in the TRUE sense of the word and who is interested in experiencing a deeper level of presence and communion should understand the history of the postures of the assembly as well as its implications on comtemporary practice, which to a large extent in the American Catholic Church does NOT currently conform either with the revised Roman Rite or with the eariest traditions of the Church. Although the authors claim that the reader is left to draw his or her own conclusion at the end of the book as to which posture -- standing or kneeling -- is more appropriate for the laity, following upon their research firmly ground in Tradition (see council of Nicea, for example), doctrine and historical practice up to and beyond the first millenium, it is clear that a drastic change in the American Catholic laity's posture and theological understanding of the Eucharist is LONG overdue!

Provocative, informative and enjoyable

Let me admit that even a slim volume on this topic doesn't excite everyone. But this volume has a fascinating discussion on the social dimensions of posture in a ritual meal. There is exploration of the history behind posture - begining with adoration as action ... and kneeling arising out of kissing ....

Throughout the book wears its scholarship easily - creating an easy read that forces you to reevaluate the use of posture in your own faith community.

I really was relieved to have found this book on Amazon and that it could be expressed delivered. All the other places I looked gave me a 2 week wait. I needed the book right away since I started my class late and homework was due like in 2 days!! I also liked that I can keep track of the entire delivery process. I was at work and I decided to see at what time my book was possibly going to be here. I looked and I saw through the tracking section of your products that my book was waiting for me on my front door. I went home and it was carefully hidden so that nobody can take my package. Thank you so much and I plan on using Amazon.com in the fture!

I absolutely could not put this book down. I thought that the way Bill Brooks chose to tell the story of Charley Floyd through Floyd's own voice, and the voices of the people in his life, was brilliant. The creative license that he took worked well enough for me to forget that he couldn't possibly be privy to such information, and that takes such talent and creativity.

Something about his style and lyrical sense reminded me of Cormick McCarthy's "All the Pretty Horses", which is one of my favorites as well.

I highly recommend this book and dare anyone to be able to put it down easily once he/ she picks it up.

Bill Brooks Does It Again!

I was blown away by Brooks' classic, THE STONE GARDEN and frankly thought, how on earth can he ever do it again? But he has. Marrying historical fiction with Brooks' inimitable lyrical prose, PRETTY BOY takes us into the life - and more importantly the heart - of one Charles Arthur Floyd.

As I began reading this book I found myself thinking, "Why do I care about a bank robber?" But in Brooks' skillful hands I not only found myself caring, but totally and willingly immersed in the life of the notorious criminal. Pretty Boy's character explodes not only through his own words ("I think about the duck that flew away and who is alone this night, like me, and wonder if ducks have hearts that ache") but through those of his partners, wife, family and mistress, among others. The end result is a novel of the best kind - haunting and with resonance. One that days later you will find yourself thinking about again. And yet again.

What a fun book! It was interesting to see how some adults had some intellectual nitpicking to do about this book, but this is a children's book. The story isn't supposed to be told with the style of Faulkner or James Joyce, or the illustrations of Monet. (Do adolescents really critique picturebook artwork like adults?) It's whole point is to entertain and inspire children, and in my experience, it does that very well. The imaginative images of princesses, sea serpents, dolphins, and faraway lands are enchanting, and hold children's attention. But the reason that this book is really great is that it goes where children's books rarely go. It introduces empowered feminine heroes. It pays homage to individuals who look different, who are not the "beautiful people" (this never happened in the fairy stories I read), because they are helpful and courageous, and they are not afraid to reach out. Children need these simple messages, because, guess what? They are children! Girls especially need to hear what this book has to say, to counter the barrage of poor role model images that they are getting everywhere else in this advertising driven age. Give your daughter this book before it's too late. Thank you for writing this book.

What an incredible Professor Dr. Steuer is

It has been many years since I had the privilege of studying child psychology and family development in Dr. Steuer's classroom at EKU. This text book I read, not for any class, but simply for my own edification, to see what the latest developments were. True to her stature, Dr. Steuer has made the study of the development of children an enjoyable venture, extraordinarily detailed and enlightening and so easy to read. My biggest mistake in life was to become a lawyer instead of following her recommendation to get into this fascinating field. Still, although I may never use what I learn from her, it is exciting to absorb material that is presented in the Steuer manner into my fund of knowledge. Everyone can be expected to walk away from reading this book feeling like you are a step higher than you were before you started. If no longer used as a text book, it should be marketed to young parents as a primer for parenthood.

To be as succinct as I can, I was overjoyed at the learning, the loving, and the laughter. I know textbooks can be quite dull, but this one was fun to read, and more importantly, EDUCATIONAL. I learned so very much from this book, as it made the learning fun and easy. What can I say? I LOVED THIS BOOK!

Every HR person should have this book, or one like it. Would be nice if it were updated soon, but all info still applies.
