I purchased this text to help review for the FNP examination. It is an excellent resource--one that I frequently pull off the shelf to review. I would strongly recommend it for your medical library.
The only criticism I have is that the layoutof topics and headings is a bit awkward, but the index does allow for quick access to topics. Interesting read, and great resource.

Authentic Cuban licks
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2006-06-01
If you are looking for a book that teaches self expression with afro cuban licks, then this book is for you. The idea behind the book is to teach the subtlety of Afro Cuban Syncopation and how to apply it using actual quinto licks from Cuba that are very tasty. The method used in the book is very intuitive as well as methodical and teaches how to start playing with simple short ideas such as Ride patterns that are played in Matanzas Cuba. Ride patterns not only teach the subtlty of expressing syncopation but also demonstrate how to use space between "hits". There are 3 concepts the book offers in the way of beginning to learn to "speak" the language of rumba quinto. 1. Rides are subtle and are great for adding tastefulness without saying too much. 2. The type of phrases in the book can be combined with ride patterns as a way of accenting or adding more pressure from time to time in the music as the rumba starts to become more energetic. 3. The solo at the end of the book gives the student an opportunity to to feel what its like to improvise with cuban feel. The older style of the Habana Guaguanco rhythm including the correct placement of the clave rhythm is used for the background rhythm at three different speeds so that the licks in the book can be practiced slowly at first and then faster and faster.

Superb learning resource unlocking the mystery of conga soloing.

Cliff Brooks has to be one of the most talented teachers around...And probably the most generous, gentle person I have ever come across.
I started studying afro-cuban percussion awhile ago, as a second instrument with piano being my primary instrument..Having learned the basics, I kept looking for resources that would unlock the mystery of playing solos on the the congas, especially quinto licks..It was purely by accident that I stumbled onto Clifford's website and I immediately purchased his online teaching movies.

Needless to say, Cliff took the time to contact me personally and to discuss any difficulties..A rare quality these days.
I subsequently ordered the book and am in the process of ordering Clifford's second book in the series.

This book/learning resource is an absolute gem..Once you understand Clifford's method of notation, if becomes easy and a pleasure to practice with the material which is well thought out, well planned with an outstanding layout.
What I really like about this methodolgy is the effortless way in which you can internalise the material....Before you realise it, you are playing some mean licks and thinking of logical, and highly creative solos.

If book one is anything to go by, then I cannot wait to get book two and any other material that Clifford may bring out...

Way to go Cliff!!!!!

HOLLYWOOD, Calif., March 17, 2004 -- On the heels of an earlier than usual Oscars, the Directors Board of Broadband Motion Pixure Arts and Technologies today released nominees for its 3rd Annual Pixie Awards, which honor achievement in online and broadband motion picture production.

Formally known as the Directors Board Awards for Achievement in Broadband Motion Pixure Production, the Pixie Awards are widely considered the top award -- if not the only award -- in a burgeoning area of artistic endeavor that includes animation, film, and web site design.

"It's an enormous honor to be nominated by the Pixie Awards in one category, but to be nominated in two categories is simply over the top!" said Looney Bin Animation Studios creative director Stan Holden upon hearing the good news about his animated feature Rebel Without a Claus.

"It's the equivalent of being nominated for an Oscar!" Holden added from his offices in Orange County, Calif.

The Pixie Awards include categories for Best Web Design that Incorporates Motion and Best Original Score for an i-Feature -- a film that resides entirely on the Internet.

Magical and funny play in a fine edition
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2004-11-22
There are many reasons for the popularity of Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream", not the least among them is the almost unique joining of the humorous misuse of language (by the tradesman actors) and the utter beauty of language and expression (by Puck, Oberon, and Titania). One usually gets a farce of language or an attempt at the sublime. Here the music of the two enriches both.

How can one put together these four disparate plotlines into such a wonderful whole? The quartet of lovers and their mixed and varied attentions forms the basis of the plot in the comedy and it is a delightful enough farce. The squabble of Demitrius and Lysander over Hermia while Helena pines over Demitrius, Oberon and Titania's argument over one of her servants and Oberon's use of Puck to manipulate Titania's affections including Puck's mistaken application of Oberon's potion to Lysander's eyes, the pending marriage of Thesus and Hippolyta, and the wonderfully, magically awful play being put on by the tradesman for the nobles. Putting all this into a wonderful whole is an achievement that I believe is unmatched.

I do want to say that this play has suffered a great deal in our sex obsessed age. We have foisted on this play an eroticism that it does not claim for itself nor display. While the "adult" couples (Thesus & Hippolyta, Oberon & Titania) interact and talk in ways that include that aspect of their lives, the youthful couples always talk and act in ways that are concerned with propriety and modesty. Bottom is hardly the lust blinded brute depicted in modern productions. He is much more interested in eating and chatting with his Fairy friends than Titania. It is Titania who is under the influence of the magic flower who is infatuated with Bottom while he remains quite oblivious to her desires.

In any case, this is a fine edition of the work with many helps for the reader. Almost half the book is filled with introductory essays that provide background on the play and its text. The play itself is full of notes to help the reader understand idioms and definitions of words that are obscure, unique to Shakespeare, or that have changed meaning since 1596. There are four Appendices that cover source materials for the play, realigned text that the editors believe were corrupted in the sources we have for the play and the last one is the prologue to the play that Peter Quince butchers to the amusement of the nobles. The appendix provides us with the prologue with correct punctuation, as Quince should have read it.

All the background material is interesting and enriches our understanding of the play. But it is the play that matters and is so much fun to read.

Both young adults and younger audiences with parents who like to read aloud will appreciate the lovely new Shirley Climo story collection Monkey Business: Stories From Around The World, featuring color drawings peppered throughout by Eric Brooks, and monkey-focused stories from Africa, the Americas and Asia. This isn't a picturebook, nor is it entirely fiction: 118 pages blend folktales with facts and provide fables, proverbs, legends, and introductory facts. A unique, gorgeous coverage suitable for any elementary-level animal book collection.

BIAS ALERT! I am the illustrator of this book and VERY excited about it :) MONKEY BUSINESS is my first book illustrated for another author and also contains some of my favorite illustration work to date. A big thanks to Shirley Climo for writing the book and to the editors at Henry Holt for letting me illustrate it.

The 14 different stories (and monkeys within) required careful research on primates and cultural/enviromental settings at zoos and libriaries. Expressions and gestures are certainly exaggerated for effect, but opposable thumbs, prehensile tails etc. are all pegged to the appropriate primates. Enjoy!

MacIvor and Brooks create a masterful exploration of theatre and humanity in this work. It is cutting edge, powerful, and definitely unforgettable. The characters are full and dynamic, the story is eery and spellbinding. This is a play that is worth your time.

Another MacIvor Masterpiece!

Like many of his plays, Monster is a solo performance with a frightening edge. It gets under your skin in such a seductive way that you don't even realize that you're going to be left devestated by the end of the work. A solo man plays numerous roles in an acting tour de force that should make the world stand up and take notice of Canadian theatre and drama. If you read it, you'll want to see it (or perform it), and if you do... spread the word. Long live MacIvor!

My family went to the Czech republic in 2003 with this guide. We used it to take as many at 10 day trips around the Czech Republic. The book divides its destinations by regions. It is easy to use. It has great pictures. The guide takes you to lots of museums or places of culture. In fact, many of the places we went to had school children and their teachers. It is not a guide for great beer or food. Though it does list some restaurants.

After working as a Reading Specialist for the public school system for several years, I began to realize how much awareness of word play and figures of speech have been lost as we enter raise and educate a new generation of children. In Ned Loses His Head, David Slater brings word play back into reading in a wonderfully entertaining story. This book is sure to be a great hit not only with elementary kids but with teachers and parents as well. It demonstrates how creative one can be with the English language.

Truth IS Stranger than Fiction!
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-11-10
My father is a mortician. I remember that as a kid I asked him once if dead bodies can move (which I'd heard some people say could happen). Dad gave some type of scientific explanation about nerves and blood and replied that yes, a body could "appear" to move, but it wasn't moving because it was still alive. Unless it's Anne Green's body. Anne was dead. She was accused of infanticide after her child was stillborn, and she was hanged--hanged for 30 minutes. Her corpse was now part of medical science study and about to be dissected. Moments before the dissection began, however, one of the medical students noticed Anne was still alive--barely. Filled with drama and suspense, author Mary Hooper fills in the fictional details (although they are very believable) about the true account of Anne Green's miraculous return from the dead. This one is a page turner that is sure to keep the attention of teens and adults alike! A copy of the actual pamphlet from the 1600s that explains the true story is included at the end of the book and is a must-read. Lots of potential for good discussion with this book.

1650 England, a young woman wakens in darkness 'curled on her side like a wood louse'. She believes she's in Hell. Meanwhile, Robert, a young medical student, sees the eyes fluttering of a hanged murderess who is about to be dissected for the medical school.

Doctors and Puritans clash. The doctors believe the woman yet lives. The Puritans claim her soul for God. The doctors apply all the tests at their disposal, including bleeding her, and giving her an enema, to prove she's alive...

Anne Green is a maid in the house of Sir Thomas. The Lord's grandson, Geoffrey, makes advances to her promising to elevate her when his grandfather dies. She eventually succumbs. Then, she discovers she's with child....

"Newes from the Dead" is billed as a childrens' novel, but it's impossible to put down once you've opened the book and begun reading. Even when you have read the true accounts or the adult fiction tale, you're still going to be drawn in by Mary Hooper's adept retelling. The author's done her research and it definitely shows.
