The Lives of the Gods- Surrealism via the Short Story
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2000-05-20
This brazen collection of joyfully sinister short stories is appropriate to the melancholy, brooding atmosphere that is associated with the paintings of the author's brother, Giorgio de Chirico. Alberto Savionio (aka, Andrea de Chirico) was a master of lurid description. His prose triumphs over the mundanity of daily existance while simultaneously shoving in the reader's face the bleak and formless features of existential truth. All this in a highly entertaining, playfully obscene, and compact little collection. No lover of surreal literature (or surrealism in general) should be without this lip-smacking mental delicacy.

Wow. This book blew me away. Charlie Price interweaves important mental illness information for young people with an intriguing, fast-moving story. Although I thought I knew where it was headed, I was surprised and immensely satisfied by the ending. Price, with his background working in adolescent units of psychiatric hospitals, creates an original twist with credible characters as he skillfully weaves his plot. I loved Dead Connection, and this new book positions Charlie Price as a master of the young adult novel.

Vibrant characters and fast-moving plot!

Charlie Price has done it again! His first book, "Dead Connection," was a delight. "Lizard People" is equally delicious. His artful blending of science fiction, drama, and intrigue gripped me from start to finish. Throughout the book I kept second-guessing how it would end. I was wrong on all counts! "Lizard People" is a page turner that will captivate any reader. Read it!

Love Mystifies; The Book Electrifies!!

Having just finished the last of the short stories in the book "Love Mystifies", I can only ask myself "When will the next anthology from these gifted authors be published?". This, the second anthology of their short stories, proves even more enchanting and delightful than the first. And who thought THAT was possible? These tales weave romance with mystery, magic, supsense, vampires, reincarations and loves from the past, all into spellbinding and seductive webs of intrigue. My favorite stories were those of Betsy Norman's; my favorite being "The Talisman" for it's eerie, yet sweet ending, and "Imagine" which actually gave me chills in one part. Kudos to a wonderful romance writer! If you believe in romance and the mystery and magic and the surreal happenings that it can bring, this book is for you. My compliments to all the authors on another terrific anthology.

Simply put, Terry Brooks is a superb author. In a departure from his more serious works such as the Shannara series, Brooks has crafted (1986) this entertaining, humerous first novel in the Landover series. If you are looking for fantasy adventure that will make you smile, this novel is a great place to start.

Terry Brooks has a great story here. I was skeptical at 1st I don't like mixing fantasy with reality but it was such a great story and flowed so well I just loved it. Thanks Terry for another great series. The Kobolds in this book changed my whole world perspective on these little creatures.

Magical Secrets about Line Etching & Engraving Review

Review Date: 2008-10-01
"Line" is one of the seven "Elements of Art," ingrained into students vocabulary in art classes across the globe. (I taught art in Ghana, and the students had these terms memorized like the days of the week.) Catherine Brooks' book on Line Etching & Engraving lays down the foundation of intaglio printmaking and gives step-by-step instructions on how to use the specific tools and accomplish the techniques. Asphaltum. Acid. Hotplate. Scraper. Burnisher. Copper Plate. Drypoint Needle. These all sound like archaic tools used in the middle ages, and in fact, intaglio printmaking is a centuries old process. However, this book shows how contemporary artists like Julie Mehretu, Anish Kapoor, and Richard Tuttle, made prints in the Crown Point Press studio that are distinctly modern and cool. There are excellent photographs of the artists working on plates and beautiful reproductions of their prints. The step-by-step instructions are written in a clear voice and the reader can follow the photos that illustrate the technical process. I would recommend this book to a printmaking student, print-shop professional, or someone who is interested in prints and wants to expand their knowledge of printmaking. There are also fantastic and sometimes humorous quotes from the artists dotted throughout the book. I like this one by Tom Marioni, "I am fascinated by art that can only be seen if you know it is art. If something that's not painting or sculpture seems interesting and is in an art context, it might be a work of invisible art." In short, this book will improve your printmaking skills immensely, it could inspire you to do something creative, or as an art collector, you might even find a new love of prints. The dvd is absolutely worthwhile--it brings the whole thing together, especially for a visual learner. I wish I had this book when I was a printmaking student in art school!

Making Minestrone is a fun book for children which features a rhyming text about making minestrone soup. Not only will kids enjoy reading the simple text and looking at the colorful illustrations, but they will also look forward to making this vegan soup. The beginning of the story lets the reader know what ingredients are required - green beans, carrots, onions, peas, potatoes, zucchini, pasta, cooking oil, salt and pepper, and water. The story features several children gathering vegetables they need for their soup from a vegetable garden. The end of the book contains the actual recipe for the soup. Making Minestrone is an entertaining book for young children, but it will be appreciated by anyone who enjoys a tasty, ethical meal. --Reviewed by N. Glenn Perrett

I had the honor of studying on scholarship at the Martha Graham School in the summer of 1994. I was given this scholarship by Diane Gray, the director of the school and a woman who was given many of Martha's roles after Martha could no longer dance them. It was such an honor to train in that school knowing it had been founded by such a genius as Martha Graham.

This book itself is, in my opinion, the best record of Martha's art. This is a legendary and important work for the dance world. "The Kick," which is featured on the cover of this book, is perhaps the most "iconographic" picture in dance history. This book even includes pictures of Martha with her then-husband Erick Hawkins, as well as with future Modern Dance legend and innovator Merce Cunningham, in a dance Martha created called, "Every Soul is a Circus." This dance was one of Martha's few forays into comedy.

Martha was a genius who changed dance forever. And this book helps to insure that her legacy will continue.
If you can afford it... and you are an admirer of Martha Graham, I would recommend getting this book.

Barbara Morgan, did a wonderful work with Martha Graham, she captured the essence of the movement, she took so many pictures of the early works, such as Frontier, Lamentation, Primitive Mysteries, that you are able to feel what the piece is about, also the size of the pictures in the book, gives even more credits to the Author. Graham Classics, Satyric Festival Song, and Deep Song, have been reconstructed with the help of Barbara Morgan pictures, in the late 80's, even Martha agreed that the actuals versions of the pieces are close to what she did... This is a book to have in your Library if you are a Friend of the Art, enjoy your new book.

I teach a course in the fundamentals of arithmetic and logic for elementary education majors so I examined this book as a possible textbook for the spring semester of 2006. I found it very suitable, the coverage is exactly what needs to be covered and the presentation is targeted at the appropriate audience. My students would have no trouble reading and understanding the text. I was going to use it this spring when my schedule was suddenly changed and I was no longer teaching the class. However, it is likely that I will use this book if and when I teach the fundamentals class again.

I am a fifth grade teacher and this is the second year that our school guidance counselor and I are using this book for a discussion group. Last year, we chose girls who were struggling with social issues. They suggested that all of the 5th grade girls should read the book. So we are doing just that-class by class. This book is very meaningful for girls struggling with new and often bewildering issues characteristic of their age and development. We highly recommend it!

Popular and a good student, sixth-grader Alyssa thought she had life all figured out. Then along comes stuff that tests her, like falling for her English teacher, trying to guess why best friend Chelsea is being so weird and what's up with her girls club. The worst, though, is the new girl in town who seems to be usurping Chelsea's attention, who delights in tormenting Alyssa for no reason she can see and whom Alyssa is convinced played a nasty prank on her. All sorts of struggles come to Alyssa's fore, including a startling revelation about her dad and the thought that maybe she, not the new girl, is becoming the meanest girl around. The ending is happy and satisfying, though some plot lines are tied up too quickly. Allie has a keen grasp on real kids' speech and behavior, and preteen girls should eat this up.

This is only a part of a whole, still it works very well as a stand alone piece. Very evocative and manages to express very deep emotions in a compacted way. It's a shame that not many publishers would print something like this because it doesn't fit mainstream standards. Read the other stories by this author, they will leave you wanting more.

I was captivated by the details. Everything was so real to me, I felt I was there alongside of Magdalen. I felt her pains and sorrows, I could not do what she did for her parents. I wish I could have saved her from what she had to go through. I loved the story, I was sad for her. I want to read more of the story I want to know what happens next!?!
