I've known James for years and can guarantee every word is true. A witness to the history that overtook many men, James illuminates the day-to-day world that annealed character and brought out the strength of mind to carry on in spite of danger and hardship.

I have one word to describe James Brooks. Hero. This book is an excellant portrayal of what our soldiers went through in the second World War. The words on the page are gripping and they can't even start to tell us what these men went through. It is amazing to see the bonds these men had for one another. Throughout the book, I pictured myself right beside Mr. Brooks. There is no other person that I would rather be next to if I was in this situation. He is an American Hero!

Haiku De-mystified without Sacrificing the Mystery

George Swede and Randy Brooks make haiku accessible through a delightful collection of excellent poets and some of the finest examples of their haiku. The introduction to the history of Western haiku is worth the price alone and puts the genre in a temporal and literary context. As previously mentioned, the book has strange dimensions but I can always locate the space on my bookshelf! A good thing too since I peruse "Global Haiku" over and over. Highly recommended!

A pocketable haiku companion

Global Haiku contains 325 haiku by 25 English-speaking poets. The goal of the editors has been to select the 25 most noteworthy poets concerning quality and quantity. The result is a volume that presents a great variety of high-quality haiku by some of the most notable haiku-poets. The only drawback is that few poets are represented with more than 10 or 15 haiku, which is slightly at odds with the fact that quantity of work is one of the criteria for the poets selected.

Global Haiku begins with an excellent introductory chapter, "Towards a definition of the English haiku", where George Swede methodically goes through eight different criteria in order to encompass the English haiku and, finally, he boils it all down to five very sensible rules for haiku poets. Towards the end of the volume there is an equally interesting and very readable "History of the English haiku". After that follow brief biographies of the 25 poets.

At the current price, "Global Haiku" makes a very good buy. Personally, I also value the somewhat odd format, 11 * 21 * 1 cm, which makes it easy to pocket when commuting.

An excellent and timely study

Most of us are aware that ministers, priests, and rabbis play an important role in contemporary American political and cultural life. But few of us understand how that role has changed over time. This study, by one of the most prominent scholars of American theology and church history, elucidates these changes with remarkable clarity and insight. I highly recommend the book to all who wish to understand the history of clerical authority and influence in this country.

A Masterful Study!

What do Tammy Faye Baker, Pat Robertson, and Jesse Jackson have in common? They are cultural icons that Professor Holifield's masterful study puts into an entertaining and historically useful context. Americans have been worried about the decline of Christianity and the loss of respect for clergy since the Pilgrims disembarked from the Mayflower. Dr. Holifield's lucid discussion allows us to see the sweep of American history, and his incisive consideration of the eternal paradox --how to be in the world but not of the world--that clergy face makes that history come to life. This book will be useful not only to readers interested in Christian clergy but also to any reader who wonders how it is possible to juggle American identity with religious commitments that transcend national boundaries. This is MUST READING as we head into Election Year 2008.

I am a 5 handicap and have over 300 instruction books. I read this book and immediately improved my game. It is all about one simple move...how you use the left shoulder. I can't believe everyone doesn't teach this way. What a shame.

He de-mystifies all the complicated swing thoughts that swarm in one's head. Though it does take some time to groove the swing he prescribes, I can feel the positive effects already after one practice session. If nothing else, the backswing is a keeper.

This is a very simple book, quick to read and easy to understand. What I thought was great about it was that it explained grief in a way that was easily understood. Sometimes we can look at grief as a process that we need to go through in stages. This book helps us to understand that although grief is a process, it also flows in and out of the stages, sometimes going backward and forward. The best message it carries is that there are times, especially when we lose parents or spouses, that we just don't get through the process. Once we reach acceptance, we continue to miss the person and although the grief is much, much easier to deal with, we still have it with us in some cases...we just don't reach acceptance and then we're done. We are much more complex than that as human beings. I liked the way the author presented the subject and how easy it was to understand.

I use it in a college class I teach.....

I find that it is very readable and interesting and very much like the work I have been doing for the last two decades! Students will learn first hand information of what makes up crisis work, and become familiar with the many facets of crisis work. Down to earth writing and very real case scenarios! One of Kind overview of American Haiku

This collection of poems read at the Haiku North America meeting this year is worth every penny for someone who loves haiku, or wants to learn about the form. Interviews with many of the leading authors, educators, and writers of haiku are something no poet will want to miss.

In addition the haiku competition, and the many strong commentaries are masterfully edited into a great film about a very short form of poetry. I was thrilled to see something this relevant and entertaining regarding the haiku form. Definitely a great present for any poet.

What Can't Be Had Elsewhere

"Haiku: The Art of the Short Poem" is the first feature-length film about haiku in English. It is based on interviews with poets at the Haiku North America 2007 conference in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Some of the poets, like Sonia Sanchez, are better known for other kinds of poetry. Other poets, like William J. Higginson, are well known in haiku circles. Tazuo Yamaguchi blends the interviews with these poets into a tapestry of ideas and passions about haiku in English.

A Haiku North America conference is basically a gathering of people whose lives have been changed by haiku. Several poets in the film describe their first encounter with haiku by the Japanese masters--how something in these poems flashed across oceans and centuries and touched them in a profound way. Other poets describe the need, in the words of Sanchez, "Not just to learn the form, but to transform the form." Another layer is Yamaguchi's own perspective, that of a Japanese-American whose family photos often show haiku on scrolls in the background; a performance poet who has won titles in national head-to-head haiku competitions; a videographer who has spent most the last decade capturing poetry on film.

Robert Hass once said of Japanese haiku, "What is in these poems can't be had elsewhere." Listen to the haiku poets in this film as they search for that something.

Thomas Brooks' works are among the best of Christian literature. While most of his books are out of print, we can be thankful that his great treatise, "Heaven on Earth" still remains. Rich in vivid language, Brooks spells out the wonders of the blessing of assurance (or acceptance with God). He blesses the reader by unfolding the glorious truths of Scripture- showing how one can obtain assurance, and how to enjoy it. In general, Brooks provides a handbook for a victorious Christian walk. His teachings are deep and practical. There is not a dull page in this book. Today, one searches through the chapters of modern Christian books for a gem to take with them. But this work, like many of the past, hold precious nuggets in every sentence. The devoted Christian will find this book an absolute treat. I did not want it to end.

One of the best things you can read on Assurance

Brooks' masterpiece on Assurance is a must-read for the Christian who is honestly "examining himself to know that he is a believer" (2 Cor.13v5). The book teaches that although assurance is not essential to salvation, it makes the Christian's walk here on earth much more comfortable - "Assurance is glory in the bud; it is the suburbs of paradise". The Christian who has the assurance of his salvation has "heaven on earth".

Brooks calls on the reader to examine himself seriously to discern first that he has true saving faith in the Savior, then calls on him to ask probing questions about the evidence of salvation in his life; love to Christ, hatred of indwelling sin, etc.

Brooks is an "easier" Puritan to read. Sample this inexpensive gem today!

After waiting a couple of years to see what was going to happen to Nancy and her family, I was pleasantly suprised to find another book in the Whispering Brook Farm series. The book is relaxing and I really enjoyed reading it. As a librarian, I don't always find time to read, but these books I do! Please take time to read a well written book about the Amish that isn't a joke.
