St. Barts is very dear to my husband and I, but more so for me. It holds a very special place in my life. It has offered me peace, contentment, a chance to regroup, recharge. We have placed our copy of Paradise Found on our coffee table at home. Robert and Kara have produced a book that is both a recipe book and a history of St. Barts. The book takes me back there whenever I look at it, read it. They have captured not only the essence of St. Barts, but the people that make St. Barts what it is. The stories are fascinating. The photographs are breathtaking and when I look at the photo on the front cover, I can smell the ocean, hear the ocean, feel the sun, feel St. Barts. I have tried several of the recipes and so far none have failed. As a "wanna be" gourmet chef, this is quite the accomplishment ! We have been to most of the restaurants featured and have now visited those we hadn't previously. This is a beautiful, wonderful book and if you love St. Barts, you'll love this book. If you've not been to St. Barts? This will make you go !

This book reveals St. Barthelemy in a unique way. The Brooks' exceptional photographs & revealing interviews with resident restaurant owners present a compelling case. "Paradise Found" is in a class by itself--more than a guide, more than a cookbook. For those who already know the island, it keeps the flame alive between trips. For those contemplating a first trip, it will give a feel for the people, the marvelous cuisine and the ambiance of a special piece of paradise.

As a long time visitor to the island, I found the book accurately captures not only the cuisine, but the feel of the island...the blend of french and caribbean influences creates some memorable meals, which the book will allow you to duplicate (well, sorta...LOL) in your kitchen at home. It's a great way to keep memories of St Barts alive, and a wonderful introduction to the island for a first time visitor.

This is the first of Martha Brooks books that I read and it is still one of my favorite books. Her characters are real and the way this book explores what happens to a family in the midst of grief while still trying to go on with their lives, will appeal to teens as well as adults.
If you like books by Sarah Dessen, you will love this book.

I think this book was really good and really easy to relate to. Sidonie was a really brave and independent teenage. The stress and problems she dealt with is really common in teen years. It was a happy yet sad story at the same time. It really shows that when you're feeling bad, family is always something you could count on. It was a wonderfully moving story, it showed that you shouldn't blame yourself for someone's actions. I liked the way it described everything in a way that I could understand it but without TOO much details. I think it was a great book and I could probably relate to it later on in life.

I loved the book. It was really something I could relate to. I could put myself in Sidonie's place and feels what she felt. Her stress, emotions and problems were really common in the teenage years, so i knew how she felt. She was dealing with her mother's death and there was alot of details that made it interesting. It was written in a way that I could understand, it wasn't too complicated. And it was also written in a way that I could feel like I was there. It doesn't have a boring place in the book and there's always a cliff-hanger everywhere. I think it was a wonderful book!!!

It's a really good book for mature 12 year olds and up. It's a story about a girl who becomes interested in the boy across the street. Read it and find out what happens.

If you already own or plan on purchasing Swokowski's "Calculus" (6th edition) or his "Calculus of a Single Variable" (2nd edition), then you will probably want to obtain some of the following ancillaries:

Advanced Placement Study Guide
ISBN: 0-534-93927-9
DERIVE Notebook
ISBN: 0-534-93637-7
Instructor's Solutions Manual
Volume I, ISBN: 0-534-93630-X
Volume II, ISBN: 0-534-93631-8
Mathematica Notebook
IBM ISBN: 0-534-93632-6
Student Solutions Manual
Volume I, ISBN: 0-534-93628-8
Volume II, ISBN: 0-534-93629-6
Study Guide
Volume I, ISBN: 0-534-93626-1
Volume II, ISBN: 0-534-93627-X
Printed Test Bank
ISBN: 0-534-93926-0
Transparencies
ISBN: 0-534-93642-3

Note: Since this book is out-of-print, some of these ancillaries will be difficult to find. I was able to locate copies of the "Student Solutions Manual" and "Study Guide" by doing a "Google" search (I used the ISBN numbers). Volume 1 of the "Student Solutions Manual" and the "Study Guide" are readily available, but volume 2 of both publications are scarce and expensive; for example, a new copy of the "Student Solutions Manual (Vol. II)" costs $83.46 from the UK, and a new copy of the "Study Guide (Vol. II)" costs $57.65. Needless to say, used copies of these ancillaries are considerably cheaper. I did not attempt to find any of the other materials. (Obviously, the quoted prices are meant to be representative and will certainly vary over time.)

"Calculus" (6th edition) contains all the chapters listed below; Swokowski's "Calculus of a Single Variable" (2nd edition) contains Chapters 1 through 9 of the main text plus appendices and index.

Precalculus Review
1. Limits and Continuity
2. The Derivative
3. Applications of the Derivative
4. Integrals
5. Applications of the Definitive Integral
6. Transcendental Functions
7. Techniques of Integration
8. Infinite Series
9. Parametric Equations and Polar Coordinates
10. Vectors and Surfaces
11. Vector-Valued Functions
12. Partial Differentiation
13. Multiple Integrals
14. Vector Calculus
15. Differential Equations
Appendices/Answers to Selected Exercises/Index.

Note: If you purchased Swokowski's "Calculus of a Single Variable" (2nd edition) instead of his "Calculus" (6th edition), then you need purchase only "volume I" of the listed ancillaries.

The ONLY problem with it is its really bad construction. Almost everybody's book was falling apart so DON'T BUY USED!!!!! I only have the cover left but I think I'm goning to buy another one or its equivalent for Calc 3(multivariable).

William Faulkner, Move Over
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2005-03-08
Collecting Candace reminds me of William Faulkner's stories. They are stark, realistic and run along fatalistic lines in the story as well as the characters. In Collecting Candace, there's only one character that suffers and that's the man that Candace selects to perform her killings of exhusbands so that she can begin with a clean slate.

Collecting Candace isn't for everyone, but if you ever want to stray over the line and see the dark undercurrents of what an insincere heart can do, then read this book. It's brief and bare outlines of how Candace attracts these men is one step below a madam collecting her own personal escorts for going out on the town. Nothing sticks to her. She is remote and like teflon, everything rolls off and away from her. Her problems, her difficulties are fostered on the poor man who takes up her cause. Instead of a white knight, the man becomes blackened and stained with Candace's own disregard for truth, justice, and the bond of love and marriage. I rate Collecting Candace five stars.

It's not for one sit-me-down reading, but a book that requires space so you, the reader, can come up for air and wipe the sweat from your brow.

That is the first thing that came to mind when finishing this book. "Collecting Candace" is a book that I read in a matter of days, as well as two times, I loved it that much. The author has a way to her writing that almost puts you in a trance - meaning it pulls you into the story as if you're in the same room observing this perfectly described sense of chaos that carries out through the whole book.
The book trailer at it's website is something that everyone should go see, whether you've read "Collecting Candace" or not. It's a thirty seconds that will leave you wanting to read it right then and there. I loved, loved, loved this book - a completely original, dark, frightening and powerful story.

Brooks has been compared to Faulkner -- that might be true, but I've never been able to finish Faulkner and I could not put this book down. Her writing is wonderful, full of atmosphere. The characters are both creepy and sympathetic. I felt like I was in the car with them hurtling toward the inevitable.

Brooks shows a fascinating understanding of human psychology and a penchant towards gritty horror. The book is a great read -- summer, winter, anytime. I hope they make a movie out of this. After reading the book I went to the website and saw the video made about the book. Definitely worth a look.

Sadly, what's going to make this book "not for everyone" is the fact that it boldly breaks away from the tired, architypical pattern followed by current drivel labeled "popular fiction". First off, the writing is beautiful--literature caliber. Tired of thin, cardboard characters and colorless narratives? Ms. Brooks deliveres a character driven story so vivid and so descriptive, the reader can't help but feel sandwiched between these two lovers as they embark on thier murderous crusade for perfect love. Never have I felt so intimately connected to a character in a novel, or so emotionally invested in a cause. And when the couple commits their unspeakably violent acts, I couldn't help but feel as if I stood beside them. Brooks' writing is that effective. This is the type of novel you pick up and don't put down until you've finished the very last page.

An innovator's ideas about Theatre

Review Date: 2008-02-13
I am not very knowledgeable about Theatre and certainly not about Theory of Theatre. I found this book quite abstract and difficult to understand. Its opening sentences sets the tone for the whole work.
"I can take any empty space and call it a bare stage. An actor moves across this space while someone is watching and a piece of theatre is engaged."
This would seem to detach Theatre from local trappings and customs.
The book consists in an effort to define four kinds of Theatre, the Deadly or Conventional commercial theatre: the Holy Theatre based on sacred repetition , the Rough Theatre that of people in the steet, and the Immediate Theatre, the flowing transformative Theatre which Brook himself is trying to do.
As the author is considered one of the most revolutionary and important of modern Theatre directors I believe the book might be of value to those actually involved in 'doing Theatre' more than it is to the general reader.

Brook's Genius

Review Date: 2007-01-11
What is great about the empty space is that Peter Brook's theory is relevant to all art forms. The four theatres he describes are basically categories in which all art falls into. This seems odd at first until you see what he is describing. What turns most people off is the idea of over-categorizing art. But Brook's theatres tend to be more or less critiques of individual performances, or what the effect of that performance is on the audience. This is also easy to read. Too much theatre philosophy gets bogged down by either melodramatic thespian writers, or rambling philosophies from those who have not trained themselves to ge good writers. With Brook, it is pretty straightforawrd, not always easy to understand mind you, but straightforward. If you are at all interested in the arts then this is a must read.

First of all thank you Mr Cowie for this fine piece of art in itself. Myself, I think Louise Brooks is and was the most beautiful actress-model ever. Its hard to put in words how her beauty and expressions move me. I love the look of the 20's and 30's and she was the icon for that era.

This book is not only a beautiful history of Lulu but a fine photo album of her life in her hay day. I only wish I could have at least shook her hand when she was living. As a photographer myself, her beauty is unmatched. If you are a fan of Louise Brooks or and a fan of fine photography of the 1920's buy this book.

She will truely be, forever Lulu Thank you again Mr.Cowie and thank you Mary Louise Brooks.

I've always been a big fan of Louise Brooks' classic beauty, and I greeted the arrival of this work with anticipation. The book itself is well written, but there is nothing new in it. As I looked through the photos, which are well reproduced, I realised that I had seen virtually all of them before.

If you are a big Louise Brooks fan, you will enjoy this, but you may wish that you had obtained it less expensively.

I won the book "elfstones of shannara" in 7th grade during a book reading contest. As the runner up -- I was asked to reach into the carton full of books and select one. The books were on varied subjects but a good portion were on epic fantasy.

The book's title "elfstones of shannara" along with the cover of Will Ohmsford holding the "seeking stones of shannara" guarding the elven girl amberle -- caught my eye. Till today I believe fate played a hand in my selection of this book.

over the summer, I got hooked and the purchased the remaining two (before I learned of the heritage series).

Now I have all 8 (including the King of shannara) and the other 4 or 5 books of the land over series. I look forward to the return of the Shannara series (or continuation).

The copies that I do have are locked in my metal safe, labeled --"the books of magius" along with my tolkien collection.

Terry Brooks remains my most favorite epic fantasy/sword and sorcery author.

I have read almost all of the brooks books. They have a way of enthralling you and not letting you put it down until you find out what happens to brin ,wil ,allanon ,or whoever. I read Tolkien before these and thought I would never find another series that caught me up so completely. I was wonderfully suprised to find myself needing to buy all of the other books to see where the tales led. This is definitely some of the best fantasy writing I have ever read. These are for you if fantasy is your thing.

Terry Brooks is amazing and it is not only his Shannara series that has destinguished him, i have also read "Running with the Deamon", "A Knight Of The Word" and Angel Fire East" and although they are not the conventional fantasy form set in a magic kingdom worlds away it brings it home and is excellent in it its own right. Well done Terry Brooks and keep wrighting for us. Anyone who wishes to talk about his books or related books is welcome to e-mail me...

The Ring Bear: A Rascally Wedding Adventure is a children's picturebook that deals with a serious theme. A young boy is used to living with just his mother; he doesn't want a stepfather, yet she is getting married and anxious to show him that he will always be a beloved member of the new blended family. He is to be the ring bearer, but he hears it as "ring bear" and decides to dress up as a bear to scare everyone away! The captivating illustrations by S. G. Brooks tell of the struggle to bridge rifts of fear and mistrust with enduring love, in this original, warmhearted, and highly recommended story by David Michael Slater.

When I came across Cheese Louise, I was amazed it hadn't been a huge hit. My son, Sam, loves it, and so does every other kid I know who has seen it. Then I found out that the publisher failed to get it reviewed almost anywhere. If this new book doesn't bring both to national attention, I'll be flabbergasted. The Ring Bear is going to be one of those books they (admittedly somewhat annoyingly) call "an instant classic."

David Michael Slater is a Language Arts teacher who has a unique way of expressing magical realism from a child's perspective. It goes a little beyond imagination and the characters play out fantasy situations and become pirates.

Westley is a young child struggling with the idea of his mother remarrying and when she asks him to be the ring bearer, he thinks she wants him to be a "Ring Bear." He is very upset and decides to ruin her plans. He doesn't like Stan because he seems to lack the playful imagination Westley thrives on.

As he acts out his frustration, he becomes a bear or a pirate and through his imaginary world he undergoes a psychological metamorphosis. You can really feel his initial anger and jealousy.

The last few pages are heartwarming and as Stan realizes he has to play Westley's creative game he calls out:

"Captain, there's a bear stowed away on our ship!"

Westley looks up and as he runs down the isle, he transforms from a bear into a loveable and dutiful son.

In this warm and beautifully illustrated book, children get a realistic look at how it feels to have a parent re-marry. The main character, Westley, knows his mom loves him; but what about Stan, her fiancé? The author shows how confused a child can be when a new stepparent enters his life. The author does this in a way that is engaging for both adults and children. In the end, "The Ring Bear" provides children with hope about the potential for feeling loved and accepted by a new stepparent.

This highly original book by author David Michael Slater is a fascinating picture book that enthralled me from cover to cover, even as it captivated children all around the world. Published by Flashlight Press, one of my favorite children's publishing houses, the book is geared for children ages 4-8, a category I love to read.

The Ring Bear has a little bit of everything: love, joy, anger, fear, family unity, humor, adventure and much more. It deals with the serious subject of parental remarriage. The main character is a young boy named Westley who is used to his mother being a single parent and has adjusted to life without a father. His world is turned upside down when she decides to remarry.

In order to help her son with his objection to the marriage and assuage his anger and fear, his mother tells him he's going to be the ring bearer at the wedding--hoping this will make him feel more secure. Westley thinks she said "ring bear," so he comes to the wedding dressed as a bear and tries to scare everyone away.

That's when the problems--and the fun--begin. What happens then? How do the wedding guests react? How do his mother and Stan, his future stepfather, take it? Is there a happy solution to this problem, a situation that sadly happens more and more often in today's world? If so, how does it happen? Will the troubled boy finally come to realize how much his mother loves him and learn to trust her? And what does Stan do to break the ice with Westley?

Obviously, I can't tell you any more without spoiling the plot, but I can tell you that despite the serious theme, this is a book that has many giggles for you and your little ones. It's a warm-hearted book that will tug at your heart-strings ... as you cry one minute, laugh the next.

Slater makes his characters so believable you will feel like you are there with them, and no one will be able to forget the mischievous, yet endearing Westley. The colorful, charming illustrations by talented artist S. G. Brooks enhance the story-line, helping bring it even more alive.

This unusual wedding adventure is a touching book which will be helpful for children whose parents are remarrying. I recommend it highly. If you feel the same, look for Grandfather's Wrinkles, Grandpa for Sale, and Carla's Sandwich ... other releases by this same popular publisher whose editor has the uncanny ability to know what children enjoy reading.

I think this is a great book. I liked the way she used quotes from the bible and told you what the scriptures really meant. I also liked how she used the scriptures from the bible to present it to us with how we are dealing with love now in our lives. Somethings will make you have an ah-ha moment.

Great read that provides tangible encounters on how to be mindful of things we often take for granted in our character, persona, and aura that will inevitably attract or detract the opposite sex for either good reason or either perverted and selfish motives respectively. As a male, it helped strengthen my discernment in order to be able to identify certain traits in females that are wholesome versus mannerism that may be harmful or destructive to the longevity of any future relationship I plan to have with a candidate considered for marriage.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I was impressed with the savvy, wisdom and wit of both writers. What an awesome combination of intellect, experience and just plain old truth. The short anecdotes offered quality reflection time and the honest assessment of the way women pursue men like food when one is hungry was ON POINT! I couldn't be happier with the sage advice, strong yet purposeful rebuke and sincere testimonies of both Joel and Michelle. I am quite a big fan of Michelle and I know that because of her writing I am a better suited female, willing to wait and work for Jesus both now and after my husband "finds me."
