A top book, but not for beginners. Coffin's terminology sounds weird today, and most examples in the book are rather rare, but if you are a champion-level player you will find the information there useful.

The eternal argument: Clovis or earlier?
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2006-08-17
The 100 year war continues among anthropologists concerning when and where the first human beings came to America. This book contains the most exhaustive and exhausting volley of facts and speculation on the issue that I've come across.

It seems that we are narrowing down the options. Either the proto-Indians arrived in the Americas during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) period 20 to 25 thousand years ago or they arrived at the end of the Ice Age (12 to 14 thousand years ago) in what is called the Clovis-First scenario. The logical point of entry for the first Americans is the Bering Sea area (Beringia)-- but the whole argument is turned askew by the fact that the oldest recognized archaelogical site in the Americas is located, of all places, in Chile -- 10 thousand miles from the Bering Sea. How did those people get to Chile so early without leaving any trace of their passage through Alaska, Canada, the United States, Mexico, Central America, and the jungles, mountains, and deserts of South America?

This book looks at the issue of when and how man arrived in the New World from many angles. There are chapters on the ice age environment in Beringia and Siberia and theories advanced on genetic diversity and the rate of population expansion of hunter-gatherer societies. Clovis-era technology gets a going over, and that incredibly odd archaeological site at Monte Verde, Chile is reexamined. All of this is a fascinating puzzle if you have the time and inclination to work your way through very difficult technical essays. This book is not easy reading; indeed those without a burning interest in the subject may find it inpenetrable.

If you like this sort of thing, you could spend weeks -- verily, a lifetime -- poring over these 486 pages, chasing down references, and coming up with your own theory as to the truth of the matter. It's a stimulating book -- but not one for the general reader.

This book contains Eric Sloane's "American Barns & Covered Bridges," "Our Vanishing Landscape," and "American Yesterday," which are all reviewed elsewhere. These are classic Eric Sloane books accompanied by his illustrations. The larger hardcover format means the illustrations are slightly larger than in the paperback editions.

Excellent Book. Logical lay-out. Book presents with how to actually diagnose "Smile" problems and explains the basis of WHY a smile is wrong (un-aesthetic). From this base it then goes thru the solutions in theory and then with cases that are photographed superbly. It's a must for any dentist (and technician) who aspires to achieve top results.

an addictive mix

There are so many fine American poets writing great prose poems these days that the genre must be having what Ol' Ez' "the Wuz" Pound used to call an American Risorgimento. Among the many past and present masters of the prose poem, few do it with more art or wit than Maxine Chernoff. In fact, the lady's raised the genre to such a high comic art that if she ever lost her tenure at San Francisco State she could probably get a gig on the Comedy Channel. Which is not to say her poetry's a one-trick (prose) pony. As with all great comedy, Chernoff's is running cover for some serious stuff, such as the anxiety of parenting, the politics of sex and marriage, the limits of science, and of course Eliot's holy trinity of love, death, and campus parking. Chernoff's heady blend of the droll and the deadly serious is such an addictive mix that if I were a psychopath I'd kidnap her just to have her poems on tap. I can see us now: she tied to a chair; me with a gun to her head, saying, "Talk to me Maxine. Tell me a prose poem."

"So, um, did ya ever hear the one about Van Gogh's Ear?"

"Yeah, but tell it to me again."

"Well at the exhibit, the ear hangs next to Bedroom at Arles. A normal ear in every way but luminous like a flat pearl button. The lobe is the size of a thumbprint and whiter, more pulpy, than the rest of the ear. People walk past. Some gasp, some smirk, some sidle up and whisper furtively into it. One man looks awed, recreating the moment when Gauguin received it with the morning mail. The museum had to pay large sums to purchase the ear from its owner, a doctor in Holland, who had kept it on his desk as a paperweight. This is the first public showing and reviews have been splendid. Rubber copies of the ear are being sold at the counter. If you look closely, you can see they are exact replicas, complete to the fine red down studding the earlobe."

"That one just kills me. Now tell me another and make it quick. My readers are growing impatient."

"Well, then tell them to order the book for Pete's Sake!"

I have over 150 bridge books and I thought this book was one of the most unusual and interesting bridge books that I had ever read. An entire list of the top bridge experts including Mike Lawrence giving you one piece of advice to help your bridge game. Very Unique and unusual book. This writer played with all the experts and this is the only book that that the writer ever wrote. Highly recommend if you want a different take on bridge books this is it. Probably will be a collectors book. I purchase 2 copies.
