This book is for the advanced bridge player, or one who aspires to that level. There are two hundred pages packed with competitive bidding advice. If you decide to buy it you will need a second copy for your partner.

If you make a weak 3rd saet bid, what will you do if pard (a passed) hand makes a bid? How do you respond to pards bid? What does a 2/1 response by a passed hand? What constitutes a Drury bid, as opposed to a 1 or 2 level raise? What does a 3rd seat preempt look like? What about a 4th seat preempt?

1 Spade. Its preemptive (takes away bidding space from the opponents. A 2 club opener now has to double and then bid to show his strength). You can pass any of pards responses. If pard bids 2 hearts, eh/she will have 5 and you can safely pass a 5-2 fit.

MATHEMATICIANS should all find great pleasure in reading at least once in there life something about undecidable problems...(Yes there are some! ), and things such as: are real numbers just an illusion? etc...

People interested in the alternative "KLEEN FUNCTIONS" approach to calculability (instead of the classical TM approach or lambda calculus) will be delighted too...(Those accustumed with the TM approch will only like it more, but the book is absolutely complete in it's self...)

If you own Bridge Baron software, you'll find this a good addition to your library, and even if you don't own that software, it's still a worthwhile read. The book has 28 bridge hands (which may not seem like much, but the analysis is extensive) that are played by humans (often experts) and then played by Bridge Baron.

Bridge columns in newspapers and bridge problems in most books usually have a point to make and illustrate. The hands in newspapers cannot be ones that require extensive analysis--there isn't space. Most problems in books devote a page or two to the lesson at hand. In Computer's Twist, the problem hands are more real-life--many require a discovery process that requires you to keep options open. The hands in the book mostly have 4-7 pages of description. For each hand, you get to see how Bridge Baron does with the same hand. You learn where baron has problems--false-carding can be effective, it may not recognize leads as singletons, and it may be possible for you when playing against the Baron AI to tell when Baron has a singleton, etc.

So if you play against the Baron AI on your computer (as I do) this book will help. It's well-written, provocative, and enjoyable.

I have adopted this book for the computer class I teach for the nursing students at a JUCO. It is well written in easy to understand language that provides information in a manner that the reader is able to comprehend what they read. I would recommend this book to any nurse who wanted to know more about using computers in everyday life or in their practice as a nurse

Garry Wills' translation of Saint Augustine's "Confessions" brings this work to life. Wills has rendered Augustine's Latin into beautifully flowing contemporary English. It is commendable that he was able to do this while preserving the personal character of this saint's life story and demonstrating the complexity and depth of Augustine's thought.

While reading this book, I often felt amazed that this work, despite being written so long ago, appears to be so contemporary. Augustine's life and ideas really transcend time and are insightful reflections on the basic human condition. If you would like to read a good translation of the "Confessions" written in contemporary English, I highly recommend this edition to you.

This is a great introduction to Bridge by one of the premier personalities in the field. This book has since been re-written as "Fell's Bridge" (ISBN 0883910632) by the same author and publisher.
