Bridge Made Easy - How to Set Your Opponents

This book, volume 4 of a series of 4 books, is a good book for low intermediates or intermediates to improve their defensive play. I read it after reading Introduction to Defender's Play by Edwin Kantar and Defense in the 21st Century by Audrey Grant (two excellent books also) and found it to be a good read after those two books. Caroline is excellent at laying out numerous examples to explain the strategy behind the various principles of opening leads, second and third hand play, signals, discards, counting, and lead directing doubles. Each chapter includes "drills" to allow self-testing so the reader can tell how well she absorbed the lessons. The "solutions" to the drills explain why the correct solutions are best and why other choices are not so good. After the drills, each chapter includes four hands explaining in detail how the hands can be played and the consequences of the various directions of play. This will be on my shelf as a reference to go to as a refresher for defensive play. Well worth the low price.

This is intended for the professionals; only the most advanced "pontist" will find this of great interest.
More than a pontist needs to know in order to appreciate the aesthetics and the histories of construction problems that are found in the great number of albums and popular histories past and present.

Excellent first book on declarer play

In this very clearly written book, the authors teach declarer play strategy to novices. They cover topics in notrump play (count your winners), trump play (count your losers and when to and when not to pull trump) and introduce the finesse. The book is targeted towards beginners, and does a very good job. It includes quizzes on how to play out hands. This book and the free ACBL software "Learn to Play Bridge" give a complete novice a good start in learning the game.

This is a well written documentary of behind the scenes scientific efforts during World War II. It is written with heart, intelligence, and humor. The reader is drawn into the story, though it is a documentary, autobiographical in reality and in essence. Thinking men/women will appreciate the thought process needed by the author when he was confronted with problems to solve, sometimes in spite of assignments. He and his group spare hundreds with a special odiferous skunk smell instead of carrying out chemical testing, first. If that part of the story is is the only portion read, chuckles followed by the realization of the serious consequences will occur. At that point, the reader realizes this is not small story. It is real.

In this book, Frederick H. Frost has assembled and correlated the work of the three top international bridge mathematician-players from Africa, Great Britian and the USA. Most of the 35 probability tables offered are based on Table XX. Colonel Telfer's original cornerstone frequency table of high-card points.

As a result vital improvements in modern bidding and play have been developed, especially the precision club system for imp-type play and the natural big club for match-pointed pairs.

This fundamental reference book belongs in the library of every bridge buff throughout the world.

Bridge of Dreams: visually stunning, superbly researched
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 10 total.

"Bridge of Dreams" combines two formidable strengths, the visual appeal of the stunning Mary Griggs Burke Collection of Japanese art and the meticulous, distinguished scholarship of Miyeko Murase, who edited this catalogue for a Metropolitan Museum of Art exhibition. With objects drawn from the prehistoric period to the nineteenth century and representing every major art medium, the book serves as an excellent survey of Japanese art through the ages. The catalogue describes in satisfying detail each of the 168 objects pictured and provides as well short background essays on different genres of Japanese art. The prose is always accessible and precise, meeting the needs of both beginning art history students and the most demanding of specialists. The book concludes with an excellent glossary, list of suggested readings on Japanese art, and carefully prepared index.

Outstanding Book

Review Date: 2000-11-27
"The Bridge of Faith" presents the essentials of the Christian faith not simply as a well researched, well understood and well expressed account but as a testimony of what the author strives to assimilate and live as completely as possible. The book's chapters in effect follow the outline of the articles of the Apostles' Creed as they lay out the fundamental Christian tenets of creation, the fall, the Incarnation, the redemptive suffering, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, and the ultimate hopes of Christian believers.

The faith that opens up these vistas of the Christian reality is portrayed as a bridge that one crosses, with the grace of God, from a self-contained, indeed self-centered, world to a transcendent Reality Who invites to "glad tidings of good things". Displaying an impressive and uncommon familiarity with Scripture, the author generously cites relevant Biblical passages, interwoven with what amounts to a well thought out and thought-provoking commentary on Scripture. His treatment explains and brings to life the tenets of Christian faith in a way that relates them to real life and calls for them to be taken seriously today.

The Scriptural citations and the author's commentary complement each other in that both speak strongly, pointedly and without wasting a word about the basic realities of human existence. He does not gloss over such problems as the meaning of suffering to which he devotes a chapter, and the significance of sin and repentance. In this connection, the author insists on the role of human freedom, a subject he has remarkably treated in another work, "The Choices Are Yours". Another chapter contains an amazingly clear and comprehensive synopsis of the genesis and status of the divisions among Christians.

Perhaps the most moving pages of the book are those devoted to a description of what it means to be born again. They paint a warmly inspiring picture of what a real Christian can be. The author's final words to the reader come from the beautiful prayer found in the conclusion of the Epistle to the Hebrews. "The Bridge of Faith" is a profound and moving work of mind and heart that commends itself to every Christian, regardless of denomination.
