For me it's taken a second read in order to absorb things I missed the first time.

The writing is somewhat in-your-face when it comes to the topic. That's not a criticism, it's just that the book is slammed full of history, and IMO, it could be that the only way to pull it off within the given number of pages is to write it this way.

The subject is extremely fascinating to this reviewer, and this book really does a wonderful job of giving you both the big picture and enough detail so that when you're done, you want to buy more books on the subject.

The author *obviously* has a passion for the subject---there's enough footnotes and bibliography to kill a horse.

WAYS OF THE WORLD is an excellent introduction to the history of roads. The author is a civil engineer who combines a strong technical background with an interest in history and economics. The result is a book that appeals to both the engineer and the general reader. As a pavement engineer and scientist with over twenty years experience, I really enjoyed this book and heartily recommend it to my colleagues.

"We are One. Adjust!" is a thoughtful synthesis of what a cross section of us are thinking against the background of what we say we really want. The book offers a great deal of spiritual insight along with a creative way of looking at who we are at the moment. We often only see a small part of the picture. The authors have collected a group sample of perceptions and beliefs and have woven them into a larger picture. Written with obvious love for the reader, this book is a valuable addition to your point of view and your library.

A thought provoking book! As each of us is just a speck of sand on Planet Earth, D and T provide us with an introspective and reflective understanding about how our past expierences and emotions impact our perceptions of others.
D and T, worldwide travelers, interacting with numerous cultures, religions, and ethnic groups share their experiences in a most unique way. If there is ever hope of unity and oneness on this great planet, each of us, in our own way must revere and embrace differences.
A thought inspiring book for high school/college social science/sociology classes. On many levels, we are surely more alike than different

Faith Ringgold began her artistic career in the 1960's as a painter, but is best known for her painted story quilts and her children's books such as the award-winning TAR BEACH. Her memoirs, first published in 1995 and reprinted in this 10th Anniversary Edition, were actually begun in the late 1970's after she returned from a trip to West Africa, a time when she herself was still very much a "work in progress" personally and professionally. Then again, Faith Ringgold will always be evolving; this is not a woman content to rest on her many laurels.

A memoir is revealing on two levels: since it's selective remembering, what the author chooses to tell us about herself ends up telling us something additional. WE FLEW OVER THE BRIDGE is candid, sometimes humorous, sometimes bordering on bitter, and almost quilt-like as she pieces together a wide range of topics, from the intensely personal to political and professional. Harlem at the close of the Renaissance, the art world's resistance to nonwhite artists, Black Power's resistance to feminism, combining marital life and parenthood with a career - all are viewed through her unique lens. For example, raised in a solidly middle-class environment by a mother who was a fashion designer and who inspired her interests in fabric art (and even collaborated at times), Ringgold seems to have felt overdressed at the revolution. She doesn't quite "fit in" but then again, I'm not sure she wanted to; she creates her own routes of activism. To any aspiring artist, I'd especially recommend Part III: Making Art, Making Waves, and Making Money.

In addition to 40 beautiful color plates illustrating her work (mostly the story quilts), the book has numerous black and white photos of her family, associates, performance art and early paintings. You can keep up with her current work at FaithRinggold.com.

a must read biography of one of the most important artists of the country. A book about a Black Woman Fine Artist telling her story is a rare find and unsurprisingly interesting, poignant, insightful, triumphant.

A Refreshingly New Look at the Four Gospels

Each gospel, author Donald Bridge acccentuates in his book Why Four Gospels, has a specific purpose and a particular group of people of whom it targets.
Mr. Bridges' manner of exposulating these goals was insightful, delightful, simplistic, and most of all edifying. I was made to worship many times through out the read.
The examination begins with an invitation to look past the pages of each gospel to see "the Man from Nazareth Whose powerful, appealing, daunting, yet strangly attractive figure walks across the chapters of the gospels and out of their pages into the lives of those who watch and listen with redeeming and transforming power" [page 16].
I am very thankful that God revealed His Son the Lord Jesus Christ to me thirty-six years ago, and for His hand on my life ever since that time.
The book is a treasure house that I will refer to time and again!

This was the first novel I remember reading on my own, perhaps in the fourth grade. When I had a child of my own I decided to seek it out and see if it was as good as I remembered it being nearly 40 years ago. It has really exceeded my expectations! As another reviewer stated, it has a wondefully evocative atmosphere and is a real page turner. It also does a great job of getting into the head of a young orphaned boy who finds himself in a new and rather frightening situation. I'm reading it to my 10 year old son and I'm enjoying it as much as he is. Highly recommended.

I read this book when I was in the eighth grade and a few years ago I reread it. Both times I was enthralled. This book is a real page turner and has such atmosphere! I have been thinking about adapting it for stage for a children's theatre. Being a massachusetts native, I have a real appreciation for the setting of this book. All the characters are so well written and the plot just keeps you guessing until the very end. I wonder is Mrs. Carleton is still alive and if so, knows just how much impact this book has on its readers.

stellar writing guide for teens

I am a homeschooler and bought this book for my tenth grader. My 17-year-old daughter picked it up and read for several hours without a break. When she finished, she said, "I wish I'd had this when you were teaching me writing! It's fun, it talks to me, and it explains writing in ways I really understand."

That is what I am finding as I teach from the book. The explanations about writing are lucid as well as entertaining. It is not the least like a textbook, yet the exercises are fantastic. Already, after just two months, I can see my son's writing improve. He enjoys the writer's style and actually looks forward to this "class" the most.

I would highly recommend the book to any high school student or a precocious middle school student. Even if you're not homeschooling, your teens will learn a great deal about writing. The book does require hard work, but the pay-off is great: truly understanding the writing process and being able to apply it to both academic and life writing skills.

The writer's manual I've been seeking

Life requires we be able to communicate on paper. Our writing styles can be vastly different, but we must learn to control our material, to organize our thoughts, and to follow the rules of good English.

Well before he could read-let alone write-my youngest nephew began regaling me with stories of his own creation. I won't say his early stories were spellbinding, but I was fascinated by his view of the world. His need to express himself, to entertain, to tell stories-clearly here was a kindred spirit, a budding writer on my family tree.

He took to writing as I had. But with every story he handed to me he felt the need to offer a caveat, an explanation of what this meant or what that meant, where this idea came from and where this one was going. He had the creativity, but he lacked the tools he needed to share these ideas with others. My sister lamented the school's lack of focus on grammar and spelling and rules of organization.

I saw her point. And so began my quest to help provide for him the tools he was lacking. A journey that has ended here, with the discovery of this writer's manual.

Ms. McDonald's lively and provocative writing gives this the feel of a novel rather than a textbook. Many students are paralyzed by the thought of facing the blank page. They worry they have nothing to say, or that they cannot compete with the rest of the class, feeling that their own writing won't be good enough, that it won't measure up. In Writing: The Bridge Between Us, students gain confidence in their ability to put the English language down on paper and to identify the most common problems writers face.

Ms. McDonald strips every sentence down to its bare building blocks: words. With wisdom and clarity she shows the reader how to choose words so that each one serves a purpose. This warm and humorous journey into the world of writing can help any student become more adept at using language-a skill that, once learned, will open many doors.

Most importantly, Ms. McDonald understands that you learn to write by writing. This unique and exciting writer's manual engages the student in writing. Because the exercises and explanations are so entertaining, students learn good writing fundamentals without realizing it-and have fun in the process.

Writing: The Bridge Between Us is a masterpiece in the art of clear and concise writing. Ms. McDonald's witty take on writing-and life-is sure to jumpstart even the most hesitant student.

Well-organized introduction to bridge.

Review Date: 2003-07-07
This book is so fun and easy to read, it actually got me, a non-player, interested in bridge. Then when the internet came along, I was able to play easily using the Yahoo! servers. That's when I picked it up again.

It's organized logically: 35 lessons, 1 per day for 5 weeks, in the following order: rules, scoring, bids, notrumps, rebids, slams, competitive bids, doubles, finesse, squeezes, and on to esoteric tips that only the masters need to learn about. It covers the conventions naturally, as they come up, and also lets you know which ones are frequently needed and which are "once in a blue moon." There are plenty of examples and self-tests along the way, which let you know if you need to reread a section.

Best of all is the writing - Sheinwold is witty, making you feel like an insider to the world of smart bridge playing. If you're a beginner, you'll find him lucid and easy to follow; even a pro should take tips from the later sections. You needn't get far through the book before you start wishing you had a better partner, which I think is probably the ultimate test of any bridge book.

Sheinwold himself is an interesting fellow - a native of Great Britain, he grew up in the USA, then headed the Department of Codes and Ciphers of the O.S.S. during World War II. He returned to bridge when the war was over, making his living at playing and writing about bridge.

This book was written in 1959, but isn't dated at all, and its long life should be the best testimony to its merit. There are two very, very mildly misogynistic jokes ("who can ever tell what a woman is thinking?" is the worse of them) scattered in the text, which were well within the bounds of repartee in 1959, but which don't seem appropriate in 2003. That's the only bad thing I can find to say.

If you have any interest in bridge, you ought to read this book!

I highly recommend this book (along with its predecessor "100 Winning Tips ..") for intermediate players who want to do well playing duplicate bridge. The bite-sized and extremely applicable tips are guaranteed to take your game to the next level. Mr. Klinger talks about duplicate strategies for bidding, declarer play as well as defense. For example the correct strategy for play of the hand depends on whether you think you are in the ideal but hard to find contract (play it safe) or an inferior contract (go all out for the overtrick to make up).
