A Great Resource for Beginning Classical Language StudyReview Date: 2006-01-03
Mr. Bluedorn splits the workbook into two sections, with the Latin study first and then the Greek. Within these two individual studies, a student is guided through an understanding of word prefixes, their Latin or Greek meanings, and the Latin or Greek roots composing the word. After aquiring this basic understanding, the student is then required to develop his or her own definitions of English words by combining these classical prefixes and roots. This method provides a student with a grasp of not only the individual word studied in its component parts, but also the basic building blocks for the English language so he or she can apply these lessons to develop a comprehension of more complex words in the English language.
This book is a great tool for the grammarian and linguist-in-training alike. I highly recommended it!
Enrich your vocabularyReview Date: 2006-01-26
Since we've started learning Greek, the whole idea of words and their origins have gained priority in our lesson plans. Expanding your vocabulary is fun, rewarding, and challenging. There are many curricula and games to help you do that, and Vocabulary Bridges is one clear and concise place to start.
This workbook begins with Latin to English, includes a section for review, and then transitions to Greek to English. The lessons are fairly simple: look at the prefix, and then the word root, and then write out the dictionary definition in the space is provided. The words are grouped according to same prefix, and then root definition is provided. Students can pretty much figure out what the dictionary definition will be with those 2 pieces of information. The exercises then get more challenging as the student advances through the workbook. Some of the words on the lists are familiar (ie: advice, apply, subject), while others are less familiar (ablution, obsequious, misogyny). Certainly a foreknowledge of the ancient languages would be helpful, but the book is designed for those with no formal Greek or Latin instruction.
There are hundreds of words to define, so if your child looks up 5-10 words per week, Vocabulary Bridges will last a very long time!

Neat bookReview Date: 2006-02-08
The writing is somewhat in-your-face when it comes to the topic. That's not a criticism, it's just that the book is slammed full of history, and IMO, it could be that the only way to pull it off within the given number of pages is to write it this way.
The subject is extremely fascinating to this reviewer, and this book really does a wonderful job of giving you both the big picture and enough detail so that when you're done, you want to buy more books on the subject.
The author *obviously* has a passion for the subject---there's enough footnotes and bibliography to kill a horse.

We Are One. Adjust!Review Date: 2007-08-13
D and T, worldwide travelers, interacting with numerous cultures, religions, and ethnic groups share their experiences in a most unique way. If there is ever hope of unity and oneness on this great planet, each of us, in our own way must revere and embrace differences.
A thought inspiring book for high school/college social science/sociology classes. On many levels, we are surely more alike than different

Especially recommended for aspiring artistsReview Date: 2005-11-06
A memoir is revealing on two levels: since it's selective remembering, what the author chooses to tell us about herself ends up telling us something additional. WE FLEW OVER THE BRIDGE is candid, sometimes humorous, sometimes bordering on bitter, and almost quilt-like as she pieces together a wide range of topics, from the intensely personal to political and professional. Harlem at the close of the Renaissance, the art world's resistance to nonwhite artists, Black Power's resistance to feminism, combining marital life and parenthood with a career - all are viewed through her unique lens. For example, raised in a solidly middle-class environment by a mother who was a fashion designer and who inspired her interests in fabric art (and even collaborated at times), Ringgold seems to have felt overdressed at the revolution. She doesn't quite "fit in" but then again, I'm not sure she wanted to; she creates her own routes of activism. To any aspiring artist, I'd especially recommend Part III: Making Art, Making Waves, and Making Money.
In addition to 40 beautiful color plates illustrating her work (mostly the story quilts), the book has numerous black and white photos of her family, associates, performance art and early paintings. You can keep up with her current work at FaithRinggold.com.

A Refreshingly New Look at the Four GospelsReview Date: 2002-12-07
Mr. Bridges' manner of exposulating these goals was insightful, delightful, simplistic, and most of all edifying. I was made to worship many times through out the read.
The examination begins with an invitation to look past the pages of each gospel to see "the Man from Nazareth Whose powerful, appealing, daunting, yet strangly attractive figure walks across the chapters of the gospels and out of their pages into the lives of those who watch and listen with redeeming and transforming power" [page 16].
I am very thankful that God revealed His Son the Lord Jesus Christ to me thirty-six years ago, and for His hand on my life ever since that time.
The book is a treasure house that I will refer to time and again!

stellar writing guide for teensReview Date: 2002-10-07
That is what I am finding as I teach from the book. The explanations about writing are lucid as well as entertaining. It is not the least like a textbook, yet the exercises are fantastic. Already, after just two months, I can see my son's writing improve. He enjoys the writer's style and actually looks forward to this "class" the most.
I would highly recommend the book to any high school student or a precocious middle school student. Even if you're not homeschooling, your teens will learn a great deal about writing. The book does require hard work, but the pay-off is great: truly understanding the writing process and being able to apply it to both academic and life writing skills.
The writer's manual I've been seekingReview Date: 2002-12-17
Well before he could read-let alone write-my youngest nephew began regaling me with stories of his own creation. I won't say his early stories were spellbinding, but I was fascinated by his view of the world. His need to express himself, to entertain, to tell stories-clearly here was a kindred spirit, a budding writer on my family tree.
He took to writing as I had. But with every story he handed to me he felt the need to offer a caveat, an explanation of what this meant or what that meant, where this idea came from and where this one was going. He had the creativity, but he lacked the tools he needed to share these ideas with others. My sister lamented the school's lack of focus on grammar and spelling and rules of organization.
I saw her point. And so began my quest to help provide for him the tools he was lacking. A journey that has ended here, with the discovery of this writer's manual.
Ms. McDonald's lively and provocative writing gives this the feel of a novel rather than a textbook. Many students are paralyzed by the thought of facing the blank page. They worry they have nothing to say, or that they cannot compete with the rest of the class, feeling that their own writing won't be good enough, that it won't measure up. In Writing: The Bridge Between Us, students gain confidence in their ability to put the English language down on paper and to identify the most common problems writers face.
Ms. McDonald strips every sentence down to its bare building blocks: words. With wisdom and clarity she shows the reader how to choose words so that each one serves a purpose. This warm and humorous journey into the world of writing can help any student become more adept at using language-a skill that, once learned, will open many doors.
Most importantly, Ms. McDonald understands that you learn to write by writing. This unique and exciting writer's manual engages the student in writing. Because the exercises and explanations are so entertaining, students learn good writing fundamentals without realizing it-and have fun in the process.
Writing: The Bridge Between Us is a masterpiece in the art of clear and concise writing. Ms. McDonald's witty take on writing-and life-is sure to jumpstart even the most hesitant student.
